Genesis

1The whole earth was of one language and of one speech.

2As they travelled east,they found a plain in the land of Shinar, and they lived there.

3They said to one another, “Come, let’s make bricks, and burn them thoroughly.” They had brick for stone, and they used tar for mortar.

4They said, “Come, let’s build ourselves a city, and a tower whose top reaches to the sky, and let’s make a name for ourselves, lest we be scattered abroad on the surface of the whole earth.”

5The LORD came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men built.

6The LORD said, “Behold, they are one people, and they all have one language, and this is what they begin to do. Now nothing will be withheld from them, which they intend to do.

7Come, let’s go down, and there confuse their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech.”

8So the LORD scattered them abroad from there on the surface of all the earth. They stopped building the city.

9Therefore its name was called Babel, because there the LORD confused the language of all the earth. From there, the LORD scattered them abroad on the surface of all the earth.

10This is the history of the generations of Shem: Shem was one hundred years old when he became the father of Arpachshad two years after the flood.

11Shem lived five hundred years after he became the father of Arpachshad, and became the father of more sons and daughters.

12Arpachshad lived thirty-five years and became the father of Shelah.

13Arpachshad lived four hundred and three years after he became the father of Shelah, and became the father of more sons and daughters.

14Shelah lived thirty years, and became the father of Eber.

15Shelah lived four hundred and three years after he became the father of Eber, and became the father of more sons and daughters.

16Eber lived thirty-four years, and became the father of Peleg.

17Eber lived four hundred and thirty years after he became the father of Peleg, and became the father of more sons and daughters.

18Peleg lived thirty years, and became the father of Reu.

19Peleg lived two hundred and nine years after he became the father of Reu, and became the father of more sons and daughters.

20Reu lived thirty-two years, and became the father of Serug.

21Reu lived two hundred and seven years after he became the father of Serug, and became the father of more sons and daughters.

22Serug lived thirty years, and became the father of Nahor.

23Serug lived two hundred years after he became the father of Nahor, and became the father of more sons and daughters.

24Nahor lived twenty-nine years, and became the father of Terah.

25Nahor lived one hundred and nineteen years after he became the father of Terah, and became the father of more sons and daughters.

26Terah lived seventy years, and became the father of Abram, Nahor, and Haran.

27Now this is the history of the generations of Terah. Terah became the father of Abram, Nahor, and Haran. Haran became the father of Lot.

28Haran died in the land of his birth, in Ur of the Chaldees, while his father Terah was still alive.

29Abram and Nahor married wives. The name of Abram’s wife was Sarai, and the name of Nahor’s wife was Milcah, the daughter of Haran, who was also the father of Iscah.

30Sarai was barren. She had no child.

31Terah took Abram his son, Lot the son of Haran, his son’s son, and Sarai his daughter-in-law, his son Abram’s wife. They went from Ur of the Chaldees, to go into the land of Canaan. They came to Haran and lived there.

32The days of Terah were two hundred and five years. Terah died in Haran.

1Thuở ấy, mọi người đều nói một thứ tiếng và dùng những từ như nhau.

2Trong khi di chuyển ở phía đông, họ tìm thấy một đồng bằng ở đất Sin-a và định cư tại đó.

3Họ bảo nhau : “Nào ! Ta đúc gạch và lấy lửa mà nung !” Họ dùng gạch thay vì đá và lấy nhựa đen làm hồ.

4Họ nói : “Nào ! Ta hãy xây cho mình một thành phố và một tháp có đỉnh cao chọc trời. Ta phải làm cho danh ta lẫy lừng, để khỏi bị phân tán trên khắp mặt đất.”

5ĐỨC CHÚA xuống xem thành và tháp con cái loài người đang xây.

6ĐỨC CHÚA phán : “Đây, tất cả chúng nó họp thành một dân, nói một thứ tiếng. Chúng mới khởi công mà đã như thế thì từ nay, chẳng có gì chúng định làm mà không làm được.

7Nào ! Ta xuống và làm cho tiếng nói của chúng phải xáo trộn, khiến chúng không ai hiểu ai nữa.”

8Thế là ĐỨC CHÚA phân tán họ từ chỗ đó ra khắp nơi trên mặt đất, và họ phải thôi không xây thành phố nữa.

9Bởi vậy, người ta đặt tên cho thành ấy là Ba-ben, vì tại đó, ĐỨC CHÚA đã làm xáo trộn tiếng nói của mọi người trên mặt đất, và cũng từ chỗ đó, ĐỨC CHÚA đã phân tán họ ra khắp nơi trên mặt đất.

10Đây là gia đình ông Sêm : Khi ông Sêm được một trăm tuổi, thì ông sinh ra Ác-pắc-sát, hai năm sau hồng thuỷ.

11Sau khi sinh Ác-pắc-sát, ông Sêm sống năm trăm năm và sinh ra con trai con gái.

12Khi ông Ác-pắc-sát được ba mươi lăm tuổi, thì sinh ra Se-lác.

13Sau khi sinh Se-lác, ông Ác-pắc-sát sống bốn trăm lẻ ba năm và sinh ra con trai con gái.

14Khi ông Se-lác được ba mươi tuổi, thì sinh ra Ê-ve.

15Sau khi sinh ra Ê-ve, ông Se-lác sống bốn trăm lẻ ba năm và sinh ra con trai con gái.

16Khi ông Ê-ve được ba mươi bốn tuổi, thì sinh ra Pe-léc.

17Sau khi sinh Pe-léc, ông Ê-ve sống bốn trăm ba mươi năm và sinh ra con trai con gái.

18Khi ông Pe-léc được ba mươi tuổi, thì sinh ra Rơ-u.

19Sau khi sinh Rơ-u, ông Pe-léc sống hai trăm lẻ chín năm và sinh ra con trai con gái.

20Khi ông Rơ-u được ba mươi hai tuổi, thì sinh Xơ-rúc.

21Sau khi sinh Xơ-rúc, ông Rơ-u sống hai trăm lẻ bảy năm và sinh ra con trai con gái.

22Khi ông Xơ-rúc được ba mươi tuổi, thì sinh ra Na-kho.

23Sau khi sinh Na-kho, ông Xơ-rúc sống hai trăm năm và sinh ra con trai con gái.

24Khi ông Na-kho được hai mươi chín tuổi, thì sinh ra Te-rác.

25Sau khi sinh Te-rác, ông Na-kho sống một trăm mười chín năm và sinh ra con trai con gái.

26Khi ông Te-rác được bảy mươi tuổi, thì sinh ra Áp-ram, Na-kho và Ha-ran.

27Đây là gia đình ông Te-rác : Ông Te-rác sinh ra Áp-ram, Na-kho và Ha-ran. Ha-ran sinh ra Lót.

28Ha-ran chết trước mặt cha mình là Te-rác, tại thành Ua của người Can-đê, quê hương ông.

29Ông Áp-ram và ông Na-kho lấy vợ ; vợ ông Áp-ram tên là Xa-rai, vợ ông Na-kho tên là Min-ca, con gái ông Ha-ran ; ông này là cha của bà Min-ca và bà Gít-ca.

30Bà Xa-rai hiếm hoi, không có con.

31Ông Te-rác đem theo con trai là Áp-ram, cháu nội là Lót, con ông Ha-ran, con dâu là Xa-rai, vợ ông Áp-ram, con của ông ; họ cùng với ông ra khỏi Ua của người Can-đê, để đi tới đất Ca-na-an. Họ đến Kha-ran và ở lại đó.

32Ông Te-rác sống được hai trăm lẻ năm năm, rồi qua đời tại Kha-ran.
