1 Samuel

1Now the Philistines had taken God’s ark, and they brought it from Ebenezer to Ashdod.

2The Philistines took God’s ark, and brought it into the house of Dagon and set it by Dagon.

3When the people of Ashdod arose early on the next day, behold, Dagon had fallen on his face to the ground before the LORD’s ark. They took Dagon and set him in his place again.

4When they arose early on the following morning, behold, Dagon had fallen on his face to the ground before the LORD’s ark; and the head of Dagon and both the palms of his hands were cut off on the threshold. Only Dagon’s torso was intact.

5Therefore neither the priests of Dagon nor any who come into Dagon’s house step on the threshold of Dagon in Ashdod to this day.

6But the LORD’s hand was heavy on the people of Ashdod, and he destroyed them and struck them with tumours, even Ashdod and its borders.

7When the men of Ashdod saw that it was so, they said, “The ark of the God of Israel shall not stay with us, for his hand is severe on us and on Dagon our god.”

8They sent therefore and gathered together all the lords of the Philistines, and said, “What shall we do with the ark of the God of Israel?” They answered, “Let the ark of the God of Israel be carried over to Gath.” They carried the ark of the God of Israel there.

9It was so, that after they had carried it there, the LORD’s hand was against the city with a very great confusion; and he struck the men of the city, both small and great, so that tumours broke out on them.

10So they sent God’s ark to Ekron. As God’s ark came to Ekron, the Ekronites cried out, saying, “They have brought the ark of the God of Israel here to us, to kill us and our people.”

11They sent therefore and gathered together all the lords of the Philistines, and they said, “Send the ark of the God of Israel away, and let it go again to its own place, that it not kill us and our people.” For there was a deadly panic throughout all the city. The hand of God was very heavy there.

12The men who didn’t die were struck with the tumours; and the cry of the city went up to heaven.

1Người Phi-li-tinh chiếm đoạt Hòm Bia Thiên Chúa và đưa từ E-ven Ha Ê-de về thành Át-đốt.

2Người Phi-li-tinh lấy Hòm Bia, đưa vào nhà của thần Đa-gôn và đặt bên cạnh thần Đa-gôn.

3Hôm sau, người Át-đốt dậy sớm và kìa Đa-gôn ngã sấp mặt xuống đất, trước Hòm Bia ĐỨC CHÚA. Chúng đem Đa-gôn đặt vào chỗ cũ.

4Sáng hôm sau chúng dậy sớm và kìa Đa-gôn lại ngã sấp mặt xuống đất, trước Hòm Bia ĐỨC CHÚA. Đầu Đa-gôn và hai bàn tay đã bị chặt, thì ở trên ngưỡng cửa, chỉ còn lại thân Đa-gôn.

5Vì thế, cho đến ngày hôm nay, ở Át-đốt, các tư tế Đa-gôn và tất cả những ai vào Nhà của Đa-gôn không giẫm lên ngưỡng cửa Đa-gôn.

6Bàn tay ĐỨC CHÚA đè nặng trên người Át-đốt, Người làm cho chúng phải điêu linh, và mắc những khối u, tại Át-đốt và trong lãnh thổ.

7Thấy vậy, người Át-đốt nói : “Đừng để Hòm Bia Thiên Chúa Ít-ra-en ở lại với chúng ta, vì Người đã ra tay đối xử nghiệt ngã với chúng ta và với thần Đa-gôn của chúng ta ;

8chúng sai người đi mời tất cả các vương hầu người Phi-li-tinh đến với chúng. Chúng nói : “Chúng tôi phải làm gì với Hòm Bia Thiên Chúa Ít-ra-en ?” Các vương hầu trả lời : “Phải di chuyển Hòm Bia Thiên Chúa Ít-ra-en đến Gát.” Họ đã di chuyển Hòm Bia Thiên Chúa Ít-ra-en đi.

9Sau khi di chuyển Hòm Bia, tay ĐỨC CHÚA giáng xuống trên thành. Chúng vô cùng hoảng sợ. ĐỨC CHÚA đánh phạt người trong thành, từ bé đến lớn : khối u mọc trên khắp người chúng.

10Chúng gửi Hòm Bia Thiên Chúa đến Éc-rôn. Nhưng khi Hòm Bia đến Éc-rôn thì người Éc-rôn kêu lên rằng : “Họ di chuyển Hòm Bia Thiên Chúa Ít-ra-en đến với (chúng) ta, để giết (chúng) ta và dân (chúng) ta.”

11Chúng sai người đi mời tất cả các vương hầu người Phi-li-tinh đến. Chúng nói : “Các ông hãy trả lại Hòm Bia Thiên Chúa Ít-ra-en ; Hòm Bia phải trở về chỗ cũ, để Hòm Bia đừng giết (chúng) tôi và dân (chúng) tôi !” Thật vậy, trong toàn thành, người ta hoảng sợ trước cái chết, vì bàn tay Thiên Chúa giáng rất mạnh xuống trên đó.

12Những người không chết thì bị mắc những khối u, và tiếng kêu của thành đã thấu tới trời.
