Ecclesiastes

1Dead flies cause the ointment of the apothecary to send forth a stinking savour: so doth a little folly him that is in reputation for wisdom and honour.

2A wise man’s heart is at his right hand; but a fool’s heart at his left.

3Yea also, when he that is a fool walketh by the way, his wisdom faileth him, and he saith to every one that he is a fool.

4If the spirit of the ruler rise up against thee, leave not thy place; for yielding pacifieth great offences.

5There is an evil which I have seen under the sun, as an error which proceedeth from the ruler:

6Folly is set in great dignity, and the rich sit in low place.

7I have seen servants upon horses, and princes walking as servants upon the earth.

8He that diggeth a pit shall fall into it; and whoso breaketh an hedge, a serpent shall bite him.

9Whoso removeth stones shall be hurt therewith; and he that cleaveth wood shall be endangered thereby.

10If the iron be blunt, and he do not whet the edge, then must he put to more strength: but wisdom is profitable to direct.

11Surely the serpent will bite without enchantment; and a babbler is no better.

12The words of a wise man’s mouth are gracious; but the lips of a fool will swallow up himself.

13The beginning of the words of his mouth is foolishness: and the end of his talk is mischievous madness.

14A fool also is full of words: a man cannot tell what shall be; and what shall be after him, who can tell him?

15The labour of the foolish wearieth every one of them, because he knoweth not how to go to the city.

16¶ Woe to thee, O land, when thy king is a child, and thy princes eat in the morning!

17Blessed art thou, O land, when thy king is the son of nobles, and thy princes eat in due season, for strength, and not for drunkenness!

18¶ By much slothfulness the building decayeth; and through idleness of the hands the house droppeth through.

19¶ A feast is made for laughter, and wine maketh merry: but money answereth all things.

20¶ Curse not the king, no not in thy thought; and curse not the rich in thy bedchamber: for a bird of the air shall carry the voice, and that which hath wings shall tell the matter.

1Con ruồi chết làm cho thúi dầu thơm của thợ hòa hương; cũng vậy, một chút điên dại làm nhẹ danh một người khôn ngoan sang trọng.

2Trái tim của người khôn ở bên hữu; còn trái tim của kẻ dại ở bên tả.

3Lại khi kẻ dại đi đường, rõ ra là thiếu mất lẽ phải; nó nói cho mọi người rằng mình là kẻ dại.

4Nếu người cai quản nổi giận cùng ngươi, chớ lìa khỏi chỗ mình; vì sự mềm mại ngăn ngừa được tội lỗi lớn.

5Có một tai nạn ta đã thấy ở dưới mặt trời, như một sự lỗi lầm do quan trưởng phạm:

6ấy là kẻ ngu muội được đặt ở nơi cao, còn người giàu lại ngồi chỗ thấp.

7Ta đã thấy kẻ tôi tớ đi ngựa, còn quan trưởng đi bộ như tôi tớ vậy.

8Kẻ nào đào hầm sẽ sa xuống đó, còn kẻ phá vách tường phải bị rắn cắn.

9Ai lăn đá khỏi chỗ nó, sẽ bị thương; kẻ bửa củi có khi phải hiểm nghèo.

10Cái rìu lụt mà không mài lưỡi nó lại, ắt phải rán sức còng nhiều; nhưng sự khôn ngoan có ích đặng dẫn dắt.

11Nếu rắn cắn trước khi bị ếm chú, thì thầy ếm chú chẳng làm ích gì.

12Lời của miệng người khôn ngoan có ơn; nhưng môi của kẻ khờ dại lại nuốt lấy nó.

13Lời nói của miệng nó, khởi đầu là ngu dại, cuối cùng vẫn điên cuồng nguy hiểm.

14Kẻ ngu muội hay nói nhiều lời; dầu vậy, người ta chẳng biết điều sẽ xảy đến; và ai là kẻ tỏ ra được cho nó sự sẽ có sau mình?

15Công lao kẻ ngu muội làm cho mệt nhọc chúng nó, vì chẳng biết phải bắt đường nào đặng đi đến thành.

16Hỡi xứ, khốn thay cho mầy khi có vua còn thơ ấu, và các quan trưởng mầy ăn từ lúc buổi sáng.

17Hỡi xứ, phước cho mầy khi có vua là dòng cao sang, và các quan trưởng mầy ăn theo giờ xứng đáng, để bổ sức lại, chớ chẳng phải để đắm say!

18Tại tay làm biếng nên rường nhà sụp; vì tay nhác nhớn nên nhà dột.

19Người ta bày tiệc đặng vui chơi; rượu khiến cho đời vui; có tiền bạc thì ứng cho mọi sự.

20Dầu trong tư tưởng ngươi cũng chớ nguyền rủa vua; dầu trong phòng ngủ ngươi cũng chớ rủa sả kẻ giàu có; vì chim trời sẽ đồn ra tiếng ngươi, và loài có cánh sẽ thuật việc ra.
