1I FIGLIUOLI di Giudafurono Fares, ed Hesron, e Carmi, ed Hur, e Sobal.

2E Reaia, figliuolo di Sobal, generò Iahat; e Iahat generò Ahumai e Lahad. Queste son le famiglie de'Soratei.

3E questi furono figliuoli del padre di Etam, cioè: Izreel, ed Isma, ed Idbas: e il nome della lor sorella era Haslelponi.

4E Penuel fu padre di Ghedor, ed Ezer padre di Husa. Questi furono i figliuoli di Hur, promigenito di Efrat, padre di Bet-lehem.

5Ed Ashur, padre di Tecoa, ebbe due mogli: Helea e Naara.

6E Naara gli partorì Ahuzzam, e Hefer, e Temeni, ed Ahastari. Questi furono figliuoli di Naara.

7Ed i figliuoli di Helea furono Seret, Iesohar, Etnan,

8e Cos, il quale generò Anub, e Sobeba, e le famiglie di Aharhel, figliuolo di Harum.

9E Iabes fu il più onorato de' suoi fratelli; or sua madre gli pose nome Iabes, perciocchè disse: Io l'ho partorito con dolore.

10Or Iabes invocò l'Iddio d'Israele, dicendo: Oh! se pur mi benedicessi, ed allargassi i miei confini, e fosse la tua mano meco, e facessi che io non fossi afflitto d'alcun male! E Iddio fece avvenire ciò ch'egli avea chiesto.

11E Chelub, fratello di Suha, generò Mehir, che fu padre di Eston.

12Ed Eston generò la famiglia di Rafa, e Pasea, e Tehinna, padre della città di Nahas. Questi furono la gente di Reca.

13Ed i figliuoli di Chenaz furono Otniel e Seraia. Ed i figliuoli di Otniel furono Hatat,

14e Meonotai, il quale generò Ofra; e Semia generò Ioab, padre di coloro che abitarono nella valle, detta dei fabbri; perciocchè essi erano fabbri.

15Ed i figliuoli di Caleb, figliuolo di Gefunne, furono Iru, Ela, e Naam. E il figliuolo di Ela fu Chenaz.

16Ed i figliuoli di Iehalleleel furono Zif, e Zifa, Tiria, ed Asareel.

17Ed i figliuoli di Esdra furono Ieter, e Mered, ed Efer, e Ialon; e la moglie di Mered partorì Miriam, e Sammai, ed Isba, padre di Estemoa.

18E l'altra sua moglie Giudea partorì Iered, padre di Ghedor; ed Heber, padre di Soco; e Iecutiel, padre di Zanoa. Ma quegli altri precedenti furono figliuoli di Bitia, figliuola di Faraone, la quale Mered avea presa per moglie.

19E questi ultimi furono figliuoli della moglie Giudea, la quale era sorella di Naham, padre de' Garmei, abitanti in Cheila; e de' Maacatiti, abitanti in Estemoa.

20E i figliuoli di Simone furono Amnon e Rinna; Ben-hanan e Tilon. Ed i figliuoli d'Isi furono Zobet e Ben-zohet.

21I figliuoli di Sela, figliuolo di Giuda, furono Er, padre di Lecha; e Lada, padre di Maresa; e le famiglie della casa di Asbea, la quale esercitava l'arte del bisso;

22e Iochim, e que' di Cozeba, e Ioas, e Saraf, i quali signoreggiarono sopra Moab; e Iasubi-lehem. Ma queste cose sono antiche.

23Essi furono vasellai; ed uomini che stavano ne'giardini e ne' parchi; e dimorarono quivi appresso del re per fare il suo lavoro.

I discendenti di Simeone e le loro conquiste

24I FIGLIUOLI di Simeonefurono Nemuel, e Iamin, Iarib, Zera e Saulle;

25di cui fu figliuolo Sallum di cui fu figliuolo Mibsam, di cui fu figliuolo Misma.

26E il figliuolo di Misma fu Hamuel, di cui fu figliuolo Zaccur, di cui fu figliuolo Simi.

27E Simi ebbe sedici figliuoli e sei figliuole; ma i suoi fratelli non ebbero molti figliuoli; talchè tutta la lor nazione non moltiplicò al pari de' figliuoli di Giuda.

28Ed abitarono in Beerseba, ed in Molada, ed in Hasar-sual,

29ed in Bilha, ed in Esem, ed in Tolad,

30ed in Betuel, ed in Horma, ed in Siclag, ed in Bet-marcabot,

31ed in Hasar-susim, ed in Bet-birei ed in Saaraim. Queste furono le lor città mentre regnò Davide.

32E le lor castella furono Etam, ed Ain; Rimmon, e Tochen, ed Asan, cinque terre;

33insieme con tutte le loro villate, ch'erano intorno a quelle città, fino a Baal. Queste furono le loro stanze, come essi le spartirono fra loro per le lor nazioni.

34Or Mesobab, e Iamlec, e Iosa, figliuolo di Amasia;

35e Ioel, e Iehu, figliuolo di Iosibia, figliuolo di Seraia, figliuolo di Asiel;

36ed Elioenai, e Iaacoba, e Iesohaia, ed Asaia, ed Adiel, e Iesimiel, e Benaia;

37e Ziza, figliuolo di Sifi, figliuolo di Allon, figliuolo di Iedaia, figliuolo di Simri, figliuolo di Semaia;

38costoro furono quelli ch'erano famosi, capi nelle lor famiglie; e le case loro paterne crebbero in grandissimo numero.

39Laonde andarono dall'entrata di Ghedor, fino alla parte orientale della valle, per cercar paschi per i lor bestiami.

40E trovarono de' paschi grassi e buoni, ed un paese largo, quieto e felice; perciocchè quelli che vi abitavano prima eran de' discendenti di Cam.

41Costoro adunque, che sono stati descritti per i nomi loro, vennero al tempo di Ezechia, re di Giuda, e percossero le tende di coloro, e gli abitacoli che vi furono ritrovati; e li distrussero a modo dell'interdetto; e così son restati fino a questo giorno, ed abitarono in luogo loro; perciocchè quivi erano paschi per le lor gregge.

42Oltre a ciò, cinquecent'uomini d'infra loro, de' figliuoli di Simeone, avendo per lor capi Pelatia, e Nearia, e Refaia, ed Uzziel, figliuoli d'Isi, andarono al monte di Seir.

43E percossero il rimanente degli scampati d'infra gli Amalechiti; e sono abitati quivi infino a questo giorno.

7And the sons of Halaa, Sereth, Isaar, and Ethnan.

8And Cos begot Anob, and Soboba, the kindred of Aharehel the son of Arum.

9And Jabes was more honourable than any of his brethren, and his mother called his name Jabes, saying: Because I bore him with sorrow.

10And Jabes called upon the God of Israel, saying: If blessing thou wilt bless me, and wilt enlarge my borders, and thy hand be with me, and thou save me from being oppressed by evil. And God granted him the things he prayed for.

11And Caleb the brother of Sua beget Mahir, who was the father of Esthon.

12And Esthon beget Bethrapha, and Phesse, and Tehinna father of the city of Naas: these are the men of Recha.

13And the sons of Cenez were Othoniel, and Saraia. And the sons of Othoniel, Hathath, and Maonathi.

14Maonathi beget Ophra, and Saraia begot Joab the father of the Valley of artificers: for artificers were there.

15And the sons of Caleb the son of Jephone, were Hir, and Ela, and Naham. And the sons of Ela: Cenez.

16The sons also of Jaleleel: Ziph, and Zipha, Thiria, and Asrael.

17And the sons of Esra, Jether, and Mered, and Epher, and Jalon, and he beget Mariam, and Sammai, and Jesba the father of Esthamo.

18And his wife Judaia, bore Jared the father of Gedor, and Heber the father of Socho, and Icuthiel the father of Zanoe. And these are the sons of Bethia the daughter of Pharao, whom Mered took to wife.

19And the sons of his wife Odaia the sister of Naham the father of Celia, Garmi, and Esthamo, who was of Machathi.

20The sons also of Simon, Amnon, and Rinna the son of Hanan, and Thilon. And the sons of Jesi Zoheth, and Benzoheth.

21The sons of Sela the son of Juda: Her the father of Lecha, and Laada the father of Maresa, and the families of the house of them that wrought fine linen in the House of oath.

22And he that made the sun to stand, and the men of Lying, and Secure, and Burning, who were princes in Moab, and who returned into Lahem. Now these are things of old.

23These are the potters, and they dwelt in Plantations, and Hedges, with the king for his works, and they abode there.

24The sons of Simeon: Namuel, and Jamin, Jarib, Zara, Saul:

25Sellum his son, Mapsam his son, Masma his son.

26The sons of Masma: Hamuel his son, Zachur his son, Semei his son.

27The sons of Semei were sixteen, and six daughters: but his brethren had not many sons, and the whole kindred could not reach to the sum of the children of Juda.

28And they dwelt in Bersabee, and Molada, and Hasarsuhal,

29And in Bala, and in Asom, and in Tholad,

30And in Bathuel, and in Horma, and in Siceleg,

31And in Bethmarchaboth, and in Hasarsusim, and in Bethberai, and in Saarim. These were their cities unto the reign of David.

32Their towns also were Etam, and Aen, Remmon, and Thochen, and Asan, five cities.

33And all their villages round about these cities as far as Baal. This was their habitation, and the distribution of their dwellings.

34And Mosabab and Jemlech, and Josa, the son of Amasias,

35And Joel, and Jehu the son of Josabia the son of Saraia, the son of Asiel,

36And Elioenai, and Jacoba, and Isuhaia, and Asaia, and Adiel, and Ismiel, and Banaia,

37Ziza also the son of Sephei the son of Allon the son of Idaia the son of Semri the son of Samaia.

38These were named princes in their kindreds, and in the houses of their families were multiplied exceedingly.

39And they went forth to enter into Gador as far as to the east side of the valley, to seek pastures for their flocks.

40And they found fat pastures, and very good, and a country spacious, and quiet, and fruitful, in which some of the race of Cham had dwelt before.

41And these whose names are written above, came in the days of Ezechias king of Juda: and they beat down their tents, and slew the inhabitants that were found there, and utterly destroyed them unto this day: and they dwelt in their place, because they found there fat pastures.

42Some also of the children of Simeon, five hundred men, went into mount Seir, having for their captains Phaltias and Naaria and Raphaia and Oziel the sons of Jesi:

43And they slew the remnant of the Amalecites, who had been able to escape, and they dwelt there in their stead unto this day.
