Judith

1In the eighteenth year, the twenty-second day of the first month, there was talk in the house of Nebuchadnezzar king of the Assyrians that he should be avenged on all the land, even as he spoke.

2He called together all his servants and all his great men, and communicated with them his secret counsel, and with his own mouth, recounted the wickedness of all the land.

3They decreed to destroy all flesh which didn’t follow the word of his mouth.

4It came to pass, when he had ended his counsel, Nebuchadnezzar king of the Assyrians called Holofernes the chief captain of his army, who was second to himself, and said to him,

5“The great king, the lord of all the earth, says: ‘Behold, you shall go out from my presence, and take with you men who trust in their strength, to one hundred and twenty thousand footmen and twelve thousand horses with their riders.

6And you shall go out against all the west country, because they disobeyed the commandment of my mouth.

7You shall declare to them that they should prepare earth and water, because I will go out in my wrath against them, and will cover the whole face of the earth with the feet of my army, who will plunder them.

8Their slain will fill their valleys and brooks, and the river will be filled with their dead until it overflows.

9I will lead them as captives to the utmost parts of all the earth.

10But you shall go forth, and take all their coasts for me first. If they will yield themselves to you,then you must reserve them for me until the day of their reproof.

11As for those who resist, your eye shall not spare; but you shall give them up to be slain and to be plundered in all your land.

12For as I live, and by the power of my kingdom, I have spoken, and I will do this with my hand.

13Moreover, you shall not transgress anything of the commandments of your lord, but you shall surely accomplish them, as I have commanded you. You shall not defer to do them.’”

14So Holofernes went out from the presence of his lord, and called all the governors, the captains, and officers of the army of Asshur.

15He counted chosen men for the battle, as his lord had commanded him, to one hundred and twenty thousand, with twelve thousand archers on horseback.

16He arranged them as a great multitude is ordered for the war.

17He took camels, donkeys, and mules for their baggage, an exceedingly great multitude, and sheep, oxen, and goats without number for their provision,

18and a large supply of rations for every man, and a huge amount of gold and silver out of the king’s house.

19He went out, he and all his army, on their journey, to go before King Nebuchadnezzar, and to cover all the face of the earth westward with their chariots, horsemen, and chosen footmen.

20A great company of various nations went out with them like locusts and like the sand of the earth. For they could not be counted by reason of their multitude.

21And they departed out of Nineveh three days’ journey towards the plain of Bectileth, and encamped from Bectileth near the mountain which is at the left hand of the Upper Cilicia.

22And he took all his army, his footmen, horsemen, and chariots, and went away from there into the hill country,

23and destroyed Put and Lud, and plundered all the children of Rasses and the children of Ishmael, which were along the wilderness to the south of the land of the Chellians.

24And he went over Euphrates, and went through Mesopotamia, and broke down all the high cities that were upon the river Arbonai, until you come to the sea.

25And he took possession of the borders of Cilicia, and killed all who resisted him, and came to the borders of Japheth, which were towards the south, opposite Arabia.

26He surrounded all the children of Midian, and set their tents on fire, and plundered their sheepfolds.

27He went down into the plain of Damascus in the days of wheat harvest, and set all their fields on fire, and utterly destroyed their flocks and herds, plundered their cities, laid their plains waste, and struck all their young men with the edge of the sword.

28And the fear and the dread of him fell upon those who lived on the sea coast, upon those who were in Sidon and Tyre, those who lived in Sur and Ocina, and all who lived in Jemnaan. Those who lived in Azotus and Ascalon feared him exceedingly.

1Năm thứ mười tám, ngày hai mươi hai tháng thứ nhất, có tiếng đồn trong triều đình Na-bu-cô-đô-nô-xo, vua nước Át-sua, là ông sắp trừng phạt toàn cõi đất như lời ông nói.

2Ông triệu tập tất cả triều thần, tất cả thân hào và tỏ cho họ biết quyết định bí mật của ông. Chính miệng ông công bố đại hoạ cho toàn cõi đất.

3Họ quyết định tiêu diệt tất cả những ai không tuân hành lệnh vua ban truyền.

4Vậy sau khi nghị quyết, Na-bu-cô-đô-nô-xo, vua nước Át-sua cho vời Hô-lô-phéc-nê, đại tướng chỉ huy quân đội và cũng là nhân vật thứ hai sau vua. Vua nói với ông :

5“Đại đế, chúa tể toàn cõi đất phán thế này : đây, ngươi hãy lui ra, đem theo binh sĩ tinh nhuệ, chừng một trăm hai mươi ngàn bộ binh, một số lớn chiến mã và mười hai ngàn kỵ binh.

6Ngươi hãy đi chinh phạt tất cả các xứ ở Phương Tây, bởi vì chúng không chịu tuân theo mệnh lệnh của ta.

7Hãy truyền cho chúng chuẩn bị đất và nước, vì ta đang phẫn nộ và sắp đi đánh chúng ; ta sẽ cho đạo quân của ta phủ lấp khắp mặt đất và tha hồ cướp phá.

8Người bị thương đầy trũng lấp khe ; xác người chết tràn sông ngập suối.

9Ta sẽ đưa tù binh của chúng đến tận cùng cõi đất.

10Vậy ngươi hãy đi chinh phục cho ta mọi lãnh thổ của chúng. Chúng sẽ đầu hàng, và ngươi sẽ giam chúng lại cho ta chờ ngày ta trừng trị.

11Còn những kẻ bất tuân, đừng nhìn chúng mà thương hại, nhưng hãy đẩy chúng vào cuộc thảm sát và cướp bóc trên toàn cõi đất ngươi chiếm được.

12Vì ta lấy mạng sống và vương quốc hùng mạnh của ta mà thề : những gì ta đã nói, ta sẽ tự tay làm.

13Phần ngươi, chớ vi phạm một điều nào trong các mệnh lệnh của chúa tể ngươi, trái lại, phải chu toàn cho thấu đáo như ta đã chỉ thị cho ngươi. Ngươi không được chậm trễ thi hành những điều ấy.”

14Hô-lô-phéc-nê từ biệt chúa tể của ông ; ông cho vời tất cả quan chức, tướng lãnh, sĩ quan quân đội Át-sua.

15Ông điểm danh số người được chọn để chiến đấu, như chúa tể của ông đã truyền : chừng một trăm hai mươi ngàn người và mười hai ngàn kỵ binh xạ thủ.

16Ông sắp xếp họ thành đội ngũ tác chiến.

17Sau đó, ông dùng rất nhiều lạc đà, lừa và la để tải quân nhu, và mang theo vô số chiên, bò, dê làm quân lương.

18Người nào cũng được lãnh lương thực dồi dào với rất nhiều vàng bạc xuất từ đền vua.

19Ông cùng với tất cả đạo quân xuất trận làm tiền phong cho Na-bu-cô-đô-nô-xo ; ông cho chiến xa, kỵ binh và bộ binh tinh nhuệ phủ lấp khắp mặt đất phía tây.

20Một đám quân ô hợp cùng đi với chúng, nhiều như châu chấu, như cát trên mặt đất, vì chúng quá đông, không sao đếm nổi.

21Chúng đi khỏi Ni-ni-vê ba ngày đường thì tới được phía trước đồng bằng Béc-ti-lét ; từ Béc-ti-lét chúng tới đóng quân ở gần ngọn núi nằm về phía trái miền Ki-li-ki-a Thượng.

22Rồi từ đó, ông đem tất cả đạo quân gồm bộ binh, kỵ binh và chiến xa, tiến lên miền núi.

23Ông tàn phá Pút và Lút, cướp bóc tất cả con cái Rát-xít và con cái Ít-ma-ên đang sống ở ven sa mạc phía nam từ xứ người Khe-le-ôn.

24Ông tiến dọc theo sông Êu-phơ-rát, băng qua miền Mê-xô-pô-ta-mi-a và phá bình địa tất cả các thành nằm ở trên cao, dọc bờ suối Áp-rô-na cho tới biển.

25Ông chiếm các lãnh thổ thuộc xứ Ki-li-ki-a và đánh tan tất cả những ai kháng cự ; ông đi đến biên giới Gia-phét, ở mạn nam, đối diện với xứ Ả-rập.

26Ông bao vây toàn thể con cái Ma-đi-an, đốt lều trại và cướp phá chuồng súc vật của họ.

27Rồi ông đi xuống phía đồng bằng Đa-mát vào mùa gặt lúa mì ; ông đốt tất cả cánh đồng, tiêu diệt bò dê chiên cừu, cướp bóc các thành thị, tàn phá các đồng ruộng và dùng gươm tàn sát tất cả các thanh niên.

28Sợ hãi và kinh hoàng ập xuống trên toàn thể dân cư miền bờ biển là các dân ở Xi-đôn, Tia, trên các dân cư ở Xua, ở Ô-ki-na và toàn thể dân cư ở Giam-ni-a. Các dân cư ở Át-đốt và ở Át-cơ-lôn đều rất sợ hãi ông.
