1Vừa lúc ban mai, các thầy tế lễ cả bàn luận với các trưởng lão, các thầy thông giáo cùng cả tòa công luận; khi đã trói Đức Chúa Jêsus rồi, thì giải nộp cho Phi-lát.

2Phi-lát hỏi Ngài rằng: Aáy chính ngươi là Vua dân Giu-đa phải không? Đức Chúa Jêsus đáp rằng: Thật như lời.

3Các thầy tế lễ cả cáo Ngài nhiều điều.

4Phi-lát lại tra gạn Ngài, mà rằng: Ngươi chẳng đối đáp chi hết sao? Hãy coi họ cáo tội ngươi biết bao nhiêu!

5Nhưng Đức Chúa Jêsus chẳng trả lời chi nữa, nên nỗi Phi-lát lấy làm lạ.

6Vả, hễ đến ngày lễ Vượt Qua, quan vốn quen thói tha cho dân một tên tù, tùy theo dân xin.

7Bấy giờ có một đứa tên là Ba-ra-ba bị tù với kẻ làm loạn, vì trong khi nổi loạn, chúng nó phạm tội giết người.

8Đoàn dân đã lên, bèn xin Phi-lát làm cho mình theo như lệ thường.

9Phi-lát trả lời rằng: Các ngươi muốn ta tha Vua dân Giu-đa cho chăng?

10Vì người biết rõ các thầy tế lễ cả đã nộp Ngài bởi lòng ghen ghét.

11Nhưng các thầy tế lễ cả xui dân xin người tha tên Ba-ra-ba cho mình thì hơn.

12Phi-lát lại cất tiếng hỏi rằng: Vậy thì các ngươi muốn ta dùng cách nào xử người mà các ngươi gọi là Vua dân Giu-đa?

13Chúng lại kêu lên rằng: Hãy đóng đinh nó vào thập tự giá!

14Phi-lát nói cùng chúng rằng: Song người nầy đã làm điều ác gì? Chúng lại kêu lớn tiếng hơn rằng: Hãy đóng đinh nó vào thập tự giá!

15Phi-lát muốn cho đẹp lòng dân, bèn tha tên Ba-ra-ba; và sai đánh đòn Đức Chúa Jêsus, rồi giao Ngài cho chúng đem đóng đinh trên cây thập tự.

16Lính điệu Đức Chúa Jêsus vào sân trong, tức là trong chỗ trường án; và nhóm cả cơ binh lại đó.

17Họ choàng cho Ngài một cái áo điều, và đội trên đầu Ngài một cái mão bằng gai họ đã đương,

18rồi chào Ngài rằng: Kính lạy Vua dân Giu-đa!

19Lại lấy cây sậy đánh đầu Ngài, nhổ trên Ngài, và quì xuống trước mặt Ngài mà lạy.

20Khi họ đã nhạo cười Ngài như vậy rồi, thì cổi áo điều ra, mặc áo của Ngài lại cho Ngài, và đem ra để đóng đinh trên cây thập tự.

21Có một tên Si-môn kia, người thành Sy-ren, là cha A-léc-xan-đơ và Ru-phu, ở ngoài ruộng về, đi ngang qua đó; họ bắt phải vác cây thập tự.

22Họ đem Đức Chúa Jêsus đến nơi kia, gọi là Gô-gô-tha, nghĩa là chỗ Sọ.

23Họ cho Ngài uống rượu hòa với một dược; song Ngài không uống.

24Khi đóng đinh Ngài trên cây thập tự rồi, họ chia áo xống Ngài cho nhau, bắt thăm để biết ai được gì.

25Lúc đóng đinh Ngài, là giờ thứ ba.

26Aùn Ngài có ghi vào cái bảng rằng: Vua dân Giu-đa.

27Cũng có hai đứa ăn cướp bị đóng đinh với Ngài, một đứa tại cây thập tự bên hữu Ngài, một đứa tại cây thập tự bên tả.

28Như vậy được ứng nghiệm lời Kinh Thánh rằng: Ngài đã bị kể vào hàng kẻ dữ.

29Những kẻ đi ngang qua đó chế báng Ngài, lắc đầu mà nói rằng: Ê! ngươi là kẻ phá đền thờ, và cất lại trong ba ngày,

30hãy cứu lấy mình, xuống khỏi cây thập tự đi!

31Các thầy tế lễ cả và các thầy thông giáo cũng nói với nhau như vậy, mà nhạo cười Ngài rằng: Hắn đã cứu kẻ khác; mà cứu mình không được!

32Hỡi Đấng Christ, Vua dân Y-sơ-ra-ên, bây giờ hãy xuống khỏi cây thập tự, để cho chúng ta thấy và tin! Hai đứa bị đóng đinh cùng Ngài cũng nhiếc móc Ngài nữa.

33Đến giờ thứ sáu, khắp đất đều tối tăm mù mịt cho tới giờ thứ chín.

34Đến giờ thứ chín, Đức Chúa Jêsus kêu lớn tiếng rằng: Ê-lô-i, Ê-lô-i, lam-ma-sa-bách-ta-ni? nghĩa là: Đức Chúa Trời tôi ơi, Đức Chúa Trời tôi ơi, sao Ngài lìa bỏ tôi?

35Có mấy người đứng đó nghe vậy, thì nói rằng: Coi kìa, hắn kêu Ê-li.

36Có một người trong bọn họ chạy lấy bông đá thấm đầy giấm, để trên đầu cây sậy, đưa cho Ngài uống, mà nói rằng: Hãy để, chúng ta coi thử Ê-li có đến đem hắn xuống chăng!

37Nhưng Đức Chúa Jêsus kêu một tiếng lớn, rồi trút linh hồn.

38Màn trong đền thờ xé ra làm đôi từ trên chí dưới.

39Thầy đội đứng đối ngang Ngài, thấy Ngài trút linh hồn như vậy, thì nói rằng: Người nầy quả thật là Con Đức Chúa Trời.

40Lại có những đàn bà đứng xa xa mà xem. Trong số ấy có Ma-ri, Ma-đơ-len, Ma-ri là mẹ Gia-cơ nhỏ, và Giô-sê, cùng Sa-lô-mê,

41là ba người đã theo hầu việc Ngài khi Ngài ở xứ Ga-li-lê; cũng có nhiều đàn bà khác nữa, là những người đã theo Ngài lên thành Giê-ru-sa-lem.

42Bấy giờ là ngày sắm sửa, nghĩa là hôm trước ngày Sa-bát; khi đã chiều tối,

43có một người tên là Giô-sép, ỳ thành A-ri-ma-thê, là nghị viên tòa công luận có danh vọng, cũng trông đợi nước Đức Chúa Trời. Người bạo gan đến Phi-lát mà xin xác Đức Chúa Jêsus.

44Phi-lát lấy làm lạ về Ngài chết mau như vậy, bèn đòi thầy đội đến mà hỏi thử Ngài chết đã lâu chưa.

45Vừa nghe tin thầy đội trình, thì giao xác cho Giô-sép.

46Người đã mua vải liệm, cất xác Đức Chúa Jêsus xuống khỏi cây thập tự, dùng vải liệm vấn lấy Ngài, rồi để xác trong huyệt đã đục trong hòn đá lớn, đoạn, lăn một hòn đá chận cửa huyệt lại.

47Vả, Ma-ri Ma-đơ-len cùng Ma-ri mẹ Giô-sê, đều thấy chỗ táng Ngài.

1And straightway in the morning, the chief priests holding a consultation with the ancients and the scribes and the whole council, binding Jesus, led him away, and delivered him to Pilate.

2And Pilate asked him: Art thou the king of the Jews? But he answering, saith to him: Thou sayest it.

3And the chief priests accused him in many things.

4And Pilate again asked him, saying: Answerest thou nothing? behold in how many things they accuse thee.

5But Jesus still answered nothing; so that Pilate wondered.

6Now on the festival day he was wont to release unto them one of the prisoners, whomsoever they demanded.

7And there was one called Barabbas, who was put in prison with some seditious men, who in the sedition had committed murder.

8And when the multitude was come up, they began to desire that he would do, as he had ever done unto them.

9And Pilate answered them, and said: Will you that I release to you the king of the Jews?

10For he knew that the chief priests had delivered him up out of envy.

11But the chief priests moved the people, that he should rather release Barabbas to them.

12And Pilate again answering, saith to them: What will you then that I do to the king of the Jews?

13But they again cried out: Crucify him.

14And Pilate saith to them: Why, what evil hath he done? But they cried out the more: Crucify him.

15And so Pilate being willing to satisfy the people, released to them Barabbas, and delivered up Jesus, when he had scourged him, to be crucified.

16And the soldiers led him away into the court of the palace, and they called together the whole band:

17And they clothe him with purple, and platting a crown of thorns, they put it upon him.

18And they began to salute him: Hail, king of the Jews.

19And they struck his head with a reed: and they did spit on him. And bowing their knees, they adored him.

20And after they had mocked him, they took off the purple from him, and put his own garments on him, and they led him out to crucify him.

21And they forced one Simon a Cyrenian who passed by, coming out of the country, the father of Alexander and of Rufus, to take up his cross.

22And they bring him into the place called Golgotha, which being interpreted is, The place of Calvary.

23And they gave him to drink wine mingled with myrrh; but he took it not.

24And crucifying him, they divided his garments, casting lots upon them, what every man should take.

25And it was the third hour, and they crucified him.

26And the inscription of his cause was written over: THE KING OF THE JEWS.

27And with him they crucify two thieves; the one on his right hand, and the other on his left.

28And the scripture was fulfilled, which saith: And with the wicked he was reputed.

29And they that passed by blasphemed him, wagging their heads, and saying: Vah, thou that destroyest the temple of God, and in three days buildest it up again;

30Save thyself, coming down from the cross.

31In like manner also the chief priests mocking, said with the scribes one to another: He saved others; himself he cannot save.

32Let Christ the king of Israel come down now from the cross, that we may see and believe. And they that were crucified with him reviled him.

33And when the sixth hour was come, there was darkness over the whole earth until the ninth hour.

34And at the ninth hour, Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying: Eloi, Eloi, lamma sabacthani? Which is, being interpreted, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?

35And some of the standers by hearing, said: Behold he calleth Elias.

36And one running and filling a sponge with vinegar, and putting it upon a reed, gave him to drink, saying: Stay, let us see if Elias come to take him down.

37And Jesus having cried out with a loud voice, gave up the ghost.

38And the veil of the temple was rent in two, from the top to the bottom.

39And the centurion who stood over against him, seeing that crying out in this manner he had given up the ghost, said: Indeed this man was the son of God.

40And there were also women looking on afar off: among whom was Mary Magdalen, and Mary the mother of James the less and of Joseph, and Salome:

41Who also when he was in Galilee followed him, and ministered to him, and many other women that came up with him to Jerusalem.

42And when evening was now come, (because it was the Parasceve, that is, the day before the sabbath,)

43Joseph of Arimathea, a noble counsellor, who was also himself looking for the kingdom of God, came and went in boldly to Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus.

44But Pilate wondered that he should be already dead. And sending for the centurion, he asked him if he were already dead.

45And when he had understood it by the centurion, he gave the body to Joseph.

46And Joseph buying fine linen, and taking him down, wrapped him up in the fine linen, and laid him in a sepulchre which was hewed out of a rock. And he rolled a stone to the door of the sepulchre.

47And Mary Magdalen, and Mary the mother of Joseph, beheld where he was laid.
