Giới Thiệu

1Thưa ngài Thê-ô-phi-lơ thân kính,trước đây đã có nhiều người ghi chép những sự việc đã hoàn thành giữa chúng ta.

2Họ biên soạn theo lời tường thuật của các môn đệ đầu tiên và của nhiều nhân chứng.

3Do đó, tôi đã sưu tầm, kiểm chứng tất cả sử liệu và viết lại theo thứ tự để kính gửi ngài xem.

4Ước mong công trình khảo cứu này chứng tỏ những điều ngài đã học hỏi là chính xác.

Sự Ra Đời của Giăng Báp-tít Được Báo Trước

5Thời Vua Hê-rốt cai trị xứ Giu-đê, thầy Tế lễ Xa-cha-ri, thuộc ban A-bi-gia, lo việc tế lễ trong Đền Thờ. Vợ là Ê-li-sa-bét cũng thuộc dòng họ A-rôn.

6Ông bà là người công chính trước mặt Đức Chúa Trời, vâng giữ trọn vẹn điều răn và luật lệ của Ngài.

7Họ không có con vì Ê-li-sa-bét hiếm muộn, và cả hai đều đã cao tuổi.

8Một hôm, Xa-cha-ri vào Đền Thờ lo việc tế lễ theo phiên thứ.

9Ông bắt thăm nhằm phần việc dâng hương cho Chúa trong Đền Thờ.

10Lúc ông dâng hương, dân chúng cầu nguyện ngoài sân.

11Thình lình, một thiên sứ của Chúa hiện đến với ông, đứng bên phải bàn thờ dâng hương.

12Xa-cha-ri nhìn thấy, giật mình hoảng sợ.

13Thiên sứ nói: “Xa-cha-ri, đừng sợ! Tôi đến báo tin Đức Chúa Trời đã nghe lời ông cầu nguyện. Ê-li-sa-bét, vợ ông sẽ sinh con trai, hãy đặt tên con trẻ ấy là Giăng.

14Con trẻ sẽ là niềm vui lớn cho ông bà, và nhiều người cũng sẽ hân hoan khi nó ra đời,

15vì con trẻ sẽ được quý trọng trước mặt Chúa. Con trẻ ấy sẽ không bao giờ uống rượu nhưng được đầy dẫy Chúa Thánh Linh từ khi còn trong lòng mẹ.

16Con trẻ sẽ dìu dắt nhiều người Ít-ra-ên trở về với Chúa là Đức Chúa Trời của họ.

17Con trẻ sẽ có tinh thần và khí lực dũng mãnh như tiên tri Ê-li thời xưa. Con trẻ sẽ dọn đường cho Chúa, chuẩn bị dân chúng sẵn sàng đón tiếp Ngài. Con trẻ sẽ hòa giải cha với con, làm cho kẻ bội nghịch trở nên khôn ngoan như người công chính.”

18Xa-cha-ri nói với thiên sứ: “Việc đó làm sao thực hiện được? Vì tôi đã già, vợ tôi cũng đã cao tuổi lắm rồi!”

19Thiên sứ đáp: “Tôi là Gáp-ri-ên! Tôi thường đứng trước mặt Đức Chúa Trời. Chính Ngài sai tôi đến báo tin mừng cho ông.

20Ông không tin lời tôi, nên sẽ bị câm cho đến khi đứa trẻ ra đời. Nhưng lời tôi nói, đến đúng kỳ sẽ thành sự thật.”

21Dân chúng đứng bên ngoài chờ Xa-cha-ri, ngạc nhiên vì ông ở quá lâu trong Đền Thờ.

22Lúc trở ra, Xa-cha-ri không nói được, phải dùng tay ra dấu, nên họ biết ông vừa thấy khải tượng trong Đền Thờ.

23Khi mãn phiên phục vụ, Xa-cha-ri về nhà.

24Sau đó, Ê-li-sa-bét có thai, sống ẩn dật trong năm tháng.

25Bà tự nhủ: “Chúa thật nhân từ, Ngài đã xóa bỏ sự nhục nhã cho ta rồi!”

Sự Giáng Sinh của Chúa Giê-xu Được Báo Trước

26Qua tháng thứ sáu, Đức Chúa Trời sai thiên sứ Gáp-ri-ên đến thành Na-xa-rét, xứ Ga-li-lê,

27đến thăm Ma-ri là một trinh nữ đã hứa hôn với Giô-sép, thuộc dòng Vua Đa-vít.

28Thiên sứ nói: “Chào cô, người được ơn của Chúa! Chúa ở với cô!”

29Ma-ri bối rối, tự hỏi lời chào ấy có nghĩa gì.

30Thiên sứ giải thích: “Đừng sợ, vì Đức Chúa Trời đã ban đặc ân cho cô.

31Cô sắp có thai, sinh con trai, và đặt tên là Giê-xu.

32Con Trai đó rất cao quý, sẽ được xưng là Con của Đấng Chí Cao. Chúa là Đức Chúa Trời sẽ ban cho Ngài ngôi vua của Đa-vít.

33Ngài sẽ cai trị Ít-ra-ênmãi mãi; nước Ngài tồn tại đời đời.”

34Ma-ri hỏi thiên sứ: “Tôi là trinh nữ, làm sao có con được?”

35Thiên sứ đáp: “Chúa Thánh Linh sẽ giáng trên cô, quyền năng Đấng Chí Cao sẽ bao phủ cô, cho nên Con Thánh sinh ra sẽ được gọi là Con Đức Chúa Trời.

36Như trường hợp Ê-li-sa-bét, bà con của cô là người đã già, quá tuổi sinh nở, mà cũng có thai được sáu tháng rồi.

37Vì chẳng có việc gì Đức Chúa Trời không làm được.”

38Ma-ri thưa: “Tôi là đầy tớ Chúa, sẵn sàng vâng theo ý muốn Chúa. Xin Chúa thực hiện mọi điều ông nói.” Sau đó thiên sứ rời khỏi cô.

Ma-ri Viếng Thăm Ê-li-sa-bét

39Mấy ngày sau, Ma-ri vội vã lên đường, đến một thành phố miền đồi núi xứ Giu-đê,

40nơi Xa-cha-ri sinh sống. Cô vào nhà và chào thăm Ê-li-sa-bét.

41Vừa nghe tiếng Ma-ri chào, thai trong bụng Ê-li-sa-bét liền nhảy mừng, Ê-li-sa-bét được đầy dẫy Chúa Thánh Linh.

42Ê-li-sa-bét vui mừng và nói lớn với Ma-ri: “Cô là người được phước nhất trong giới phụ nữ! Thai trong lòng cô thật phước hạnh lớn lao!

43Thật vinh dự cho tôi vì được mẹ Chúa tôi đến thăm!

44Vừa nghe cô chào hỏi, thai trong bụng tôi đã nhảy mừng.

45Đức Chúa Trời ban phước cho cô, vì cô tin lời Ngài hứa sẽ thành sự thật.”

Bài Ca Chúc Tụng Chúa của Ma-ri

46Ma-ri đáp: “Tâm hồn tôi ca ngợi Chúa.

47Tâm linh tôi hân hoan vì Đức Chúa Trời, Đấng Cứu Rỗi tôi.

48Chúa đã lưu ý đến nô tỳ hèn mọn của Ngài,và từ nay, mọi thế hệ sẽ khen tôi là người được phước.

49Đấng Toàn Năng đã làm những việc lớn cho tôi,Danh Ngài là Thánh.

50Ngài thương xót người kính sợ Ngài từ đời này sang đời khác.

51Khi cánh tay Ngài đưa ra thể hiện quyền năng,mưu trí người kiêu ngạo liền tan biến.

52Ngài truất phế các vua chúa xuốngvà cất nhắc người thấp hèn lên.

53Ngài cho người đói được no nêvà đuổi người giàu về tay không.

54Ngài nhớ lại sự thương xót,nên cứu giúp Ít-ra-ên, đầy tớ Ngài.

55Vì Ngài đã hứa với tổ phụ chúng ta,với Áp-ra-ham và cả dòng dõi người đến muôn đời.”

56Ma-ri ở lại với Ê-li-sa-bét độ ba tháng rồi trở về nhà mình.

Giăng Báp-tít Ra Đời

57Đến ngày mãn nguyệt, Ê-li-sa-bét sinh được một con trai.

58Bà con láng giềng đều hoan hỉ khi nghe tin Chúa thương xót bà cách đặc biệt.

59Được tám ngày, họ đến làm lễ cắt bì cho đứa bé, và định đặt tên nó là Xa-cha-ri, theo tên cha,

60nhưng mẹ đứa bé quả quyết: “Không! Tên nó là Giăng!”

61Họ nói: “Họ hàng ta đâu có ai mang tên đó?”

62Rồi ra dấu hỏi Xa-cha-ri muốn đặt tên gì cho đứa bé?

63Ông sai lấy bảng viết: “Tên nó là Giăng!” Mọi người đều kinh ngạc.

64Ngay lúc ấy, Xa-cha-ri nói được, và ca ngợi Đức Chúa Trời.

65Hàng xóm láng giềng đều kinh sợ, đồn việc ấy khắp miền đồi núi xứ Giu-đê.

66Mọi người nghe chuyện đều ngẫm nghĩ: “Không biết tương lai đứa bé sẽ ra sao? Vì rõ ràng tay Chúa phù hộ nó.”

Xa-cha-ri Nói Tiên Tri

67Xa-cha-ri được đầy dẫy Chúa Thánh Linh, liền nói tiên tri:

68“Tôn ngợi Chúa là Đức Chúa Trời của Ít-ra-ên,vì Ngài đã thăm viếng và cứu chuộc dân Ngài.

69Ngài sai Đấng Cứu Rỗi đến với chúng tôi,sinh ra trong dòng họ Đa-vít, đầy tớ Ngài,

70đúng theo lời hứa của Ngàiqua môi miệng các tiên tri thánh ngày xưa.

71Ngài sẽ giải cứu chúng tôi khỏi kẻ thù nghịchvà người ghen ghét chúng tôi.

72Ngài bày tỏ lòng thương xót tổ phụ chúng tôi,nhớ lại giao ước thánh của Ngài—

73giao ước Ngài đã thề với Áp-ra-ham,tổ phụ chúng tôi.

74Chúng tôi được giải thoát khỏi kẻ thù nghịch,cho chúng tôi được mạnh dạn phụng sự Đức Chúa Trời,

75và mãi mãi sống thánh thiện,công chính trước mặt Ngài.

76Còn con, con trai bé nhỏ của ta,sẽ được xưng là tiên tri của Đấng Chí Cao, vì con sẽ dọn đường cho Chúa.

77Con sẽ chỉ cho dân Ngài biết con đường cứu rỗinhờ sự tha tội.

78Bởi lòng thương xót của Đức Chúa Trời,mà ánh bình minh sắp chiếu trên chúng ta,

79soi sáng người ngồi trong cõi tối tăm và dưới bóng tử vong,dìu dắt chúng ta vào nẻo an lành.”

80Giăng lớn lên, có ý chí mạnh mẽ. Ông sống trong hoang mạc cho đến khi công khai tỏ mình trước người Ít-ra-ên.

1Forasmuch as many have taken in hand to set forth in order a declaration of those things which are most surely believed among us,

2Even as they delivered them unto us, which from the beginning were eyewitnesses, and ministers of the word;

3It seemed good to me also, having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first, to write unto thee in order, most excellent Theophilus,

4That thou mightest know the certainty of those things, wherein thou hast been instructed.

5¶ There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judæa, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abia: and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth.

6And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless.

7And they had no child, because that Elisabeth was barren, and they both were now well stricken in years.

8And it came to pass, that while he executed the priest’s office before God in the order of his course,

9According to the custom of the priest’s office, his lot was to burn incense when he went into the temple of the Lord.

10And the whole multitude of the people were praying without at the time of incense.

11And there appeared unto him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense.

12And when Zacharias saw him, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him.

13But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John.

14And thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth.

15For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother’s womb.

16And many of the children of Israel shall he turn to the Lord their God.

17And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.

18And Zacharias said unto the angel, Whereby shall I know this? for I am an old man, and my wife well stricken in years.

19And the angel answering said unto him, I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God; and am sent to speak unto thee, and to shew thee these glad tidings.

20And, behold, thou shalt be dumb, and not able to speak, until the day that these things shall be performed, because thou believest not my words, which shall be fulfilled in their season.

21And the people waited for Zacharias, and marvelled that he tarried so long in the temple.

22And when he came out, he could not speak unto them: and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple: for he beckoned unto them, and remained speechless.

23And it came to pass, that, as soon as the days of his ministration were accomplished, he departed to his own house.

24And after those days his wife Elisabeth conceived, and hid herself five months, saying,

25Thus hath the Lord dealt with me in the days wherein he looked on me, to take away my reproach among men.

26And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth,

27To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary.

28And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.

29And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be.

30And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God.

31And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS.

32He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David:

33And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.

34Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?

35And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.

36And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren.

37For with God nothing shall be impossible.

38And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.

39And Mary arose in those days, and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Juda;

40And entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth.

41And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost:

42And she spake out with a loud voice, and said, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb.

43And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?

44For, lo, as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in mine ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy.

45And blessed is she that believed: for there shall be a performance of those things which were told her from the Lord.

46And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord,

47And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.

48For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.

49For he that is mighty hath done to me great things; and holy is his name.

50And his mercy is on them that fear him from generation to generation.

51He hath shewed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.

52He hath put down the mighty from their seats, and exalted them of low degree.

53He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he hath sent empty away.

54He hath holpen his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy;

55As he spake to our fathers, to Abraham, and to his seed for ever.

56And Mary abode with her about three months, and returned to her own house.

57Now Elisabeth’s full time came that she should be delivered; and she brought forth a son.

58And her neighbours and her cousins heard how the Lord had shewed great mercy upon her; and they rejoiced with her.

59And it came to pass, that on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child; and they called him Zacharias, after the name of his father.

60And his mother answered and said, Not so; but he shall be called John.

61And they said unto her, There is none of thy kindred that is called by this name.

62And they made signs to his father, how he would have him called.

63And he asked for a writing table, and wrote, saying, His name is John. And they marvelled all.

64And his mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue loosed, and he spake, and praised God.

65And fear came on all that dwelt round about them: and all these sayings were noised abroad throughout all the hill country of Judæa.

66And all they that heard them laid them up in their hearts, saying, What manner of child shall this be! And the hand of the Lord was with him.

67And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Ghost, and prophesied, saying,

68Blessed be the Lord God of Israel; for he hath visited and redeemed his people,

69And hath raised up an horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David;

70As he spake by the mouth of his holy prophets, which have been since the world began:

71That we should be saved from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us;

72To perform the mercy promised to our fathers, and to remember his holy covenant;

73The oath which he sware to our father Abraham,

74That he would grant unto us, that we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies might serve him without fear,

75In holiness and righteousness before him, all the days of our life.

76And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways;

77To give knowledge of salvation unto his people by the remission of their sins,

78Through the tender mercy of our God; whereby the dayspring from on high hath visited us,

79To give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.

80And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, and was in the deserts till the day of his shewing unto Israel.
