1After these things did king Ahasuerus promote Haman the son of Hammedatha the Agagite, and advanced him, and set his seat above all the princes that were with him.

2And all the king’s servants, that were in the king’s gate, bowed, and reverenced Haman: for the king had so commanded concerning him. But Mordecai bowed not, nor did him reverence.

3Then the king’s servants, which were in the king’s gate, said unto Mordecai, Why transgressest thou the king’s commandment?

4Now it came to pass, when they spake daily unto him, and he hearkened not unto them, that they told Haman, to see whether Mordecai’s matters would stand: for he had told them that he was a Jew.

5And when Haman saw that Mordecai bowed not, nor did him reverence, then was Haman full of wrath.

6And he thought scorn to lay hands on Mordecai alone; for they had shewed him the people of Mordecai: wherefore Haman sought to destroy all the Jews that were throughout the whole kingdom of Ahasuerus, even the people of Mordecai.

7¶ In the first month, that is, the month Nisan, in the twelfth year of king Ahasuerus, they cast Pur, that is, the lot, before Haman from day to day, and from month to month, to the twelfth month, that is, the month Adar.

8¶ And Haman said unto king Ahasuerus, There is a certain people scattered abroad and dispersed among the people in all the provinces of thy kingdom; and their laws are diverse from all people; neither keep they the king’s laws: therefore it is not for the king’s profit to suffer them.

9If it please the king, let it be written that they may be destroyed: and I will pay ten thousand talents of silver to the hands of those that have the charge of the business, to bring it into the king’s treasuries.

10And the king took his ring from his hand, and gave it unto Haman the son of Hammedatha the Agagite, the Jews’ enemy.

11And the king said unto Haman, The silver is given to thee, the people also, to do with them as it seemeth good to thee.

12Then were the king’s scribes called on the thirteenth day of the first month, and there was written according to all that Haman had commanded unto the king’s lieutenants, and to the governors that were over every province, and to the rulers of every people of every province according to the writing thereof, and to every people after their language; in the name of king Ahasuerus was it written, and sealed with the king’s ring.

13And the letters were sent by posts into all the king’s provinces, to destroy, to kill, and to cause to perish, all Jews, both young and old, little children and women, in one day, even upon the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, which is the month Adar, and to take the spoil of them for a prey.

14The copy of the writing for a commandment to be given in every province was published unto all people, that they should be ready against that day.

15The posts went out, being hastened by the king’s commandment, and the decree was given in Shushan the palace. And the king and Haman sat down to drink; but the city Shushan was perplexed.

1Sau biến cố đó, vua A-suê-rô thăng chức cho ông Ha-man, con ông Hăm-mơ-đa-tha, người A-gác. Vua cất nhắc ông lên, đặt ông đứng đầu mọi khanh tướng hầu cận vua.

2Quần thần nhất nhất đều cúi chào bái lạy ông Ha-man vì vua đã truyền như thế. Nhưng ông Moóc-đo-khai đã chẳng cúi chào, cũng không bái lạy.

3Quần thần trong triều nói với ông Moóc-đo-khai : “Tại sao ông lại lỗi lệnh vua ?”

4Ngày nào họ cũng lặp đi lặp lại như thế, nhưng ông vẫn không chịu nghe ; Ông cho họ thấy ông là người Do-thái. Họ mới trình sự việc cho ông Ha-man để xem ông Moóc-đo-khai còn giữ thái độ đó nữa không.

5Khi thấy ông Moóc-đo-khai chẳng cúi chào, cũng không bái lạy mình, ông Ha-man hết sức phẫn nộ.

6Nhưng đối với ông Ha-man, vì đã biết ông Moóc-đo-khai thuộc dân tộc nào, nên nếu chỉ giết một mình ông ta thôi thì tầm thường quá. Vì vậy, ông Ha-man tìm cách tiêu diệt cả dân tộc của ông Moóc-đo-khai. Đó là hết mọi người Do-thái đang sống trong toàn vương quốc của vua A-suê-rô.

7Tháng thứ nhất, tức tháng Ni-xan, vào năm thứ mười hai triều đại vua A-suê-rô, người ta gieo “Pua” (nghĩa là bắt thăm) trước mặt ông Ha-man để biết ngày biết tháng. Thăm rơi trúng ngày mười bốn tháng thứ mười hai, tức là tháng A-đa.

8Ông Ha-man thưa với vua A-suê-rô : “Trong khắp các miền thuộc vương quốc của đức vua, có một dân sống tản mác, rải rác đó đây giữa các dân. Luật lệ của chúng không giống như luật lệ của bất cứ dân nào khác. Luật lệ của đức vua, chúng chẳng tuân chẳng giữ. Quyền lợi của đức vua không cho phép để chúng yên như vậy.

9Nếu đẹp lòng đức vua, thì xin đức vua cho viết sắc lệnh tru diệt chúng. Thần xin cân ba trăm ngàn ký bạc trao cho công chức đem vào kho bạc của đức vua.”

10Bấy giờ, vua tháo bửu ấn ở tay ra trao cho cừu địch của người Do-thái là ông Ha-man, con ông Hăm-mơ-đa-tha, người A-gác.

11Rồi vua nói với ông Ha-man : “Ta tặng khanh số bạc đó, trao cho khanh cả dân tộc đó nữa. Khanh muốn làm gì chúng thì làm.”

12Ngày mười ba tháng thứ nhất, các ký lục của vua được triệu đến. Trên sắc lệnh có ghi tất cả những gì ông Ha-man đã chỉ thị để gửi đến các thủ hiến của nhà vua, các tổng đốc coi mỗi miền và các quan chức coi từng sắc dân, miền nào theo chữ viết của miền ấy, dân nào theo tiếng nói của dân ấy. Sắc lệnh được soạn thảo nhân danh vua A-suê-rô và niêm phong bằng bửu ấn nhà vua,

13Như thế, nội trong một ngày, những kẻ xưa nay vốn đầy ác ý đều bị tống xuống âm phủ, để từ đây, việc triều chính được mãi mãi ổn định và êm xuôi.”

14Sắc chỉ này đã được công bố và có hiệu lực luật pháp cho mọi miền. Bản sao cũng đã được phổ biến, để vào ngày ấn định, mọi dân sẵn sàng tuân theo.

15Trong khi vua cùng quan Ha-man ngồi chè chén say sưa, thì cả thành Su-san đều xôn xao náo động.
