1Then said the high priest, Are these things so?

2And he said, Men, brethren, and fathers, hearken; The God of glory appeared unto our father Abraham, when he was in Mesopotamia, before he dwelt in Charran,

3And said unto him, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and come into the land which I shall shew thee.

4Then came he out of the land of the Chaldæans, and dwelt in Charran: and from thence, when his father was dead, he removed him into this land, wherein ye now dwell.

5And he gave him none inheritance in it, no, not so much as to set his foot on: yet he promised that he would give it to him for a possession, and to his seed after him, when as yet he had no child.

6And God spake on this wise, That his seed should sojourn in a strange land; and that they should bring them into bondage, and entreat them evil four hundred years.

7And the nation to whom they shall be in bondage will I judge, said God: and after that shall they come forth, and serve me in this place.

8And he gave him the covenant of circumcision: and so Abraham begat Isaac, and circumcised him the eighth day; and Isaac begat Jacob; and Jacob begat the twelve patriarchs.

9And the patriarchs, moved with envy, sold Joseph into Egypt: but God was with him,

10And delivered him out of all his afflictions, and gave him favour and wisdom in the sight of Pharaoh king of Egypt; and he made him governor over Egypt and all his house.

11Now there came a dearth over all the land of Egypt and Chanaan, and great affliction: and our fathers found no sustenance.

12But when Jacob heard that there was corn in Egypt, he sent out our fathers first.

13And at the second time Joseph was made known to his brethren; and Joseph’s kindred was made known unto Pharaoh.

14Then sent Joseph, and called his father Jacob to him, and all his kindred, threescore and fifteen souls.

15So Jacob went down into Egypt, and died, he, and our fathers,

16And were carried over into Sychem, and laid in the sepulchre that Abraham bought for a sum of money of the sons of Emmor the father of Sychem.

17But when the time of the promise drew nigh, which God had sworn to Abraham, the people grew and multiplied in Egypt,

18Till another king arose, which knew not Joseph.

19The same dealt subtilly with our kindred, and evil entreated our fathers, so that they cast out their young children, to the end they might not live.

20In which time Moses was born, and was exceeding fair, and nourished up in his father’s house three months:

21And when he was cast out, Pharaoh’s daughter took him up, and nourished him for her own son.

22And Moses was learned in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and was mighty in words and in deeds.

23And when he was full forty years old, it came into his heart to visit his brethren the children of Israel.

24And seeing one of them suffer wrong, he defended him, and avenged him that was oppressed, and smote the Egyptian:

25For he supposed his brethren would have understood how that God by his hand would deliver them: but they understood not.

26And the next day he shewed himself unto them as they strove, and would have set them at one again, saying, Sirs, ye are brethren; why do ye wrong one to another?

27But he that did his neighbour wrong thrust him away, saying, Who made thee a ruler and a judge over us?

28Wilt thou kill me, as thou diddest the Egyptian yesterday?

29Then fled Moses at this saying, and was a stranger in the land of Madian, where he begat two sons.

30And when forty years were expired, there appeared to him in the wilderness of mount Sina an angel of the Lord in a flame of fire in a bush.

31When Moses saw it, he wondered at the sight: and as he drew near to behold it, the voice of the Lord came unto him,

32Saying, I am the God of thy fathers, the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. Then Moses trembled, and durst not behold.

33Then said the Lord to him, Put off thy shoes from thy feet: for the place where thou standest is holy ground.

34I have seen, I have seen the affliction of my people which is in Egypt, and I have heard their groaning, and am come down to deliver them. And now come, I will send thee into Egypt.

35This Moses whom they refused, saying, Who made thee a ruler and a judge? the same did God send to be a ruler and a deliverer by the hand of the angel which appeared to him in the bush.

36He brought them out, after that he had shewed wonders and signs in the land of Egypt, and in the Red sea, and in the wilderness forty years.

37¶ This is that Moses, which said unto the children of Israel, A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me; him shall ye hear.

38This is he, that was in the church in the wilderness with the angel which spake to him in the mount Sina, and with our fathers: who received the lively oracles to give unto us:

39To whom our fathers would not obey, but thrust him from them, and in their hearts turned back again into Egypt,

40Saying unto Aaron, Make us gods to go before us: for as for this Moses, which brought us out of the land of Egypt, we wot not what is become of him.

41And they made a calf in those days, and offered sacrifice unto the idol, and rejoiced in the works of their own hands.

42Then God turned, and gave them up to worship the host of heaven; as it is written in the book of the prophets, O ye house of Israel, have ye offered to me slain beasts and sacrifices by the space of forty years in the wilderness?

43Yea, ye took up the tabernacle of Moloch, and the star of your god Remphan, figures which ye made to worship them: and I will carry you away beyond Babylon.

44Our fathers had the tabernacle of witness in the wilderness, as he had appointed, speaking unto Moses, that he should make it according to the fashion that he had seen.

45Which also our fathers that came after brought in with Jesus into the possession of the Gentiles, whom God drave out before the face of our fathers, unto the days of David;

46Who found favour before God, and desired to find a tabernacle for the God of Jacob.

47But Solomon built him an house.

48Howbeit the most High dwelleth not in temples made with hands; as saith the prophet,

49Heaven is my throne, and earth is my footstool: what house will ye build me? saith the Lord: or what is the place of my rest?

50Hath not my hand made all these things?

51¶ Ye stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Ghost: as your fathers did, so do ye.

52Which of the prophets have not your fathers persecuted? and they have slain them which shewed before of the coming of the Just One; of whom ye have been now the betrayers and murderers:

53Who have received the law by the disposition of angels, and have not kept it.

54¶ When they heard these things, they were cut to the heart, and they gnashed on him with their teeth.

55But he, being full of the Holy Ghost, looked up stedfastly into heaven, and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God,

56And said, Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing on the right hand of God.

57Then they cried out with a loud voice, and stopped their ears, and ran upon him with one accord,

58And cast him out of the city, and stoned him: and the witnesses laid down their clothes at a young man’s feet, whose name was Saul.

59And they stoned Stephen, calling upon God, and saying, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.

60And he kneeled down, and cried with a loud voice, Lord, lay not this sin to their charge. And when he had said this, he fell asleep.

1Bấy giờ vị thượng tế hỏi ông Tê-pha-nô : “Có đúng như vậy không ?”

2Ông đáp : “Thưa quý vị là những bậc cha anh, xin nghe tôi đây : Thiên Chúa hiển vinh đã hiện ra với ông Áp-ra-ham, tổ phụ chúng ta, khi ông còn đang ở miền Mê-xô-pô-ta-mi-a, trước khi ông đến ở Kha-ran.

3*Người phán với ông : Hãy rời bỏ xứ sở, họ hàng ngươi, và đến đất Ta sẽ chỉ cho ngươi*.

4Ông liền bỏ xứ người Can-đê mà đến ở Kha-ran. Sau khi thân phụ qua đời, Người bảo ông rời nơi ấy đến đất này, nơi anh em hiện đang ở.

5Người không ban cho ông sản nghiệp nào ở đất này, dù một tấc đất cũng không, nhưng hứa cho ông cũng như cho dòng dõi ông được chiếm hữu đất này, mặc dầu bấy giờ ông không có con.

6Thiên Chúa phán với ông rằng *dòng dõi ông sẽ trú ngụ nơi đất khách quê người, và người ta sẽ bắt họ làm nô lệ và ngược đãi họ trong vòng bốn trăm năm.*

7Người lại phán : *Nhưng Ta sẽ xét xử dân đã bắt chúng làm nô lệ, và sau đó chúng sẽ ra đi và sẽ thờ phượng Ta tại nơi này*.

8Rồi Người ban cho ông giao ước, mà dấu hiệu là phép cắt bì ; và như thế, sau khi sinh ông I-xa-ác được tám ngày, ông làm phép cắt bì cho con ; ông I-xa-ác cũng làm như thế cho ông Gia-cóp, và ông Gia-cóp đã làm như thế cho mười hai tổ phụ.

9“Các tổ phụ ghen ông Giu-se nên đã bán ông cho người ta đưa sang Ai-cập. Nhưng Thiên Chúa vẫn ở với ông.

10Người cứu ông khỏi mọi bước ngặt nghèo, *cho ông được cảm tình của Pha-ra-ô, vua Ai-cập, và được khôn ngoan trước mặt nhà vua, khiến nhà vua đặt ông làm tể tướng cai quản nước Ai-cập và toàn thể hoàng cung*.

11*Rồi xảy ra nạn đói trong cả nước Ai-cập và tại Ca-na-an* : đó là thời rất ngặt nghèo, và cha ông chúng ta không tìm đâu ra lương thực.

12Khi ông Gia-cóp nghe nói bên Ai-cập có lúa mì, liền sai cha ông chúng ta đi lần thứ nhất.

13Rồi đến lần thứ hai, thì ông Giu-se cho các anh em nhận ra mình ; bấy giờ Pha-ra-ô biết rõ gốc tích của ông Giu-se.

14Ông Giu-se liền sai đi mời thân phụ là ông Gia-cóp, cùng với tất cả họ hàng là bảy mươi lăm người.

15Vậy ông Gia-cóp xuống Ai-cập. Ông đã qua đời ở đó, và cha ông chúng ta cũng vậy.

16Hài cốt các ông được đưa về Si-khem và táng trong ngôi mộ mà ông Áp-ra-ham đã bỏ tiền ra mua của con cái Kha-mo tại Si-khem.

17“Khi gần đến thời thực hiện lời Thiên Chúa đã long trọng hứa với ông Áp-ra-ham, thì dân sinh sôi nảy nở ra nhiều tại Ai-cập,

18cho đến khi một vua khác lên trị vì nước Ai-cập. Vua này không biết ông Giu-se.

19Là người xảo quyệt, vua xử tệ với nòi giống chúng ta, ngược đãi cha ông chúng ta, đến nỗi bắt các cụ phải đem trẻ sơ sinh của mình bỏ đi, không cho chúng sống.

20Chính vào thời đó, Mô-sê sinh ra. Đứa bé kháu khỉnh trước mặt Thiên Chúa, lại chỉ được nuôi ba tháng ở nhà thân phụ.

21Sau đó bị bỏ, nhưng được con gái Pha-ra-ô rước về nuôi làm con trai mình.

22Cậu bé được dạy cho biết tất cả về sự khôn ngoan của người Ai-cập, và là người đầy uy thế trong lời nói cũng như việc làm.

23“Khi được chẵn bốn mươi tuổi, ông Mô-sê nảy ra ý định thăm viếng các anh em mình là con cái Ít-ra-en.

24Thấy một người anh em bị một người Ai-cập làm hại, ông liền bênh, và để trả thù cho người bị áp bức, ông đánh chết người Ai-cập.

25Ông tưởng các anh em ông sẽ hiểu rằng Thiên Chúa dùng tay ông để ban ơn cứu độ cho họ ; nhưng họ thì không hiểu.

26Ngày hôm sau, đang khi họ đánh lộn thì ông xuất hiện và dàn xếp cho đôi bên làm hoà. Ông nói : ‘Này các người, các người là anh em, tại sao lại xử tệ với nhau ?’

27Nhưng kẻ đang xử tệ với người đồng bào gạt ông ra và nói : *Ai đã đặt ông làm người lãnh đạo và người xét xử chúng tôi* ?

28*Hay là ông tính giết tôi, y như đã giết tên Ai-cập hôm qua *?

29Nghe câu nói ấy, ông Mô-sê liền trốn đi và đến trú ngụ ở miền Ma-đi-an. Ở đó ông sinh được hai con trai.

30“Đúng bốn mươi năm sau, *một thiên sứ hiện ra với ông tại sa mạc núi Xi-nai, trong ngọn lửa của một bụi cây đang cháy.*

31Ông Mô-sê ngạc nhiên khi thấy thị kiến ấy. Đang khi ông lại gần để xem cho rõ, thì có tiếng Chúa phán với ông :

32*Ta là Thiên Chúa của cha ông ngươi, Thiên Chúa của Áp-ra-ham, I-xa-ác và Gia-cóp*. Ông Mô-sê phát run lên, không dám nhìn nữa.

33Bấy giờ Chúa phán với ông : *‘Cởi dép ở chân ra, vì nơi ngươi đang đứng là đất thánh* !

34*Ta đã thấy rõ cảnh khổ cực của dân Ta bên Ai-cập và đã nghe tiếng chúng kêu than, nên Ta xuống giải thoát chúng.* Bây giờ, ngươi hãy đi ! Ta sai ngươi sang Ai-cập.’

35“Ông Mô-sê này là người mà họ đã từng chối bỏ khi nói : *Ai đã đặt ông làm người lãnh đạo và người xét xử* ?, thì Thiên Chúa lại sai ông làm người lãnh đạo và cứu chuộc, qua trung gian vị thiên sứ đã hiện ra với ông trong bụi gai.

36Chính ông đã đưa họ ra, bằng cách làm những điềm thiêng dấu lạ tại đất Ai-cập, trong Biển Đỏ và trong sa mạc bốn mươi năm trường.

37Chính ông Mô-sê đó là người đã nói với con cái Ít-ra-en : *Từ giữa đồng bào của anh em, Thiên Chúa sẽ cho đứng lên một ngôn sứ như tôi để giúp anh em*.

38Chính ông là người đã có mặt trong đại hội ở sa mạc, bên cạnh vị thiên sứ nói với ông trên núi Xi-nai, và bên cạnh cha ông chúng ta. Chính ông đã đón nhận những lời hằng sống để ban cho chúng ta.

39Nhưng cha ông chúng ta đã không muốn vâng lời ông ; họ đã gạt ông ra và trong thâm tâm, họ đã quay lại Ai-cập.

40Họ nói với ông A-ha-ron : *Xin ông làm cho chúng tôi những vị thần dẫn đầu chúng tôi, vì cái ông Mô-sê, người đã đưa chúng tôi ra khỏi đất Ai-cập, chúng tôi không biết chuyện gì đã xảy ra cho ông ta.*

41Trong những ngày ấy, họ đã làm tượng một con bê, họ dâng lễ tế cho ngẫu tượng ấy và ăn mừng công trình tay họ làm ra.

42*vật hy sinh và lễ tế nào đâu ?*

43*tới bên kia* Ba-by-lon.

44“Khi ở trong sa mạc, cha ông chúng ta có Lều Chứng Ước, như Đấng phán với ông Mô-sê đã truyền phải làm theo kiểu mẫu ông đã thấy.

45Lều ấy, cha ông chúng ta đã kế thừa, và đã cùng với ông Giô-suê, đem vào đất chiếm được của các dân ngoại mà Thiên Chúa đã đuổi đi khuất mắt các ông. Lều ở lại đó cho đến thời vua Đa-vít.

46Vua này đẹp lòng Thiên Chúa và đã xin được tìm một ngôi nhà cho Thiên Chúa của Gia-cóp.

47Nhưng chính vua Sa-lô-môn mới xây nhà cho Người.

48Tuy nhiên, Đấng Tối Cao không ở trong những ngôi nhà do tay người phàm làm ra, như lời ngôn sứ đã nói :

49*sẽ là chốn Ta nghỉ ngơi ?*

50*đã làm nên mọi sự ấy sao ?*

51“Hỡi những người cứng đầu cứng cổ, lòng và tai không cắt bì, các ông luôn luôn chống lại Thánh Thần. Cha ông các ông thế nào, thì các ông cũng vậy.

52Có ngôn sứ nào mà cha ông các ông không bắt bớ ? Họ đã giết những vị tiên báo Đấng Công Chính sẽ đến ; còn các ông, nay đã trở thành những kẻ phản bội và sát hại Đấng ấy.

53Các ông là những người đã lãnh nhận Lề Luật do các thiên sứ công bố, nhưng lại chẳng tuân giữ.”

54Khi nghe những lời ấy, lòng họ giận điên lên, và họ nghiến răng căm thù ông Tê-pha-nô.

55Được đầy ơn Thánh Thần, ông đăm đăm nhìn trời, thấy vinh quang Thiên Chúa, và thấy Đức Giê-su đứng bên hữu Thiên Chúa.

56Ông nói : “Kìa, tôi thấy trời mở ra, và Con Người đứng bên hữu Thiên Chúa.”

57Họ liền kêu lớn tiếng, bịt tai lại và nhất tề xông vào ông

58rồi lôi ra ngoài thành mà ném đá. Các nhân chứng để áo mình dưới chân một thanh niên tên là Sao-lô.

59Họ ném đá ông Tê-pha-nô, đang lúc ông cầu xin rằng : “Lạy Chúa Giê-su, xin nhận lấy hồn con.”

60Rồi ông quỳ gối xuống, kêu lớn tiếng : “Lạy Chúa, xin đừng chấp họ tội này.” Nói thế rồi, ông an nghỉ.
