1 Samuel

1And the Lord said to Samuel. How It long wilt thou mourn for Saul, whom I have rejected from reigning over Israel? fill thy horn with oil, and come, that I may send thee to Isai the Bethlehemite: for I have provided me a king among his sons.

2And Samuel said: How shall I go? for Saul will hear of it, and he will kill me. And the Lord said: Thou shalt take with thee a calf of the herd, and thou shalt say: I am come to sacrifice to the Lord.

3And thou shalt call Isai to the sacrifice, and I will shew thee what thou art to do, and thou shalt anoint him whom I shall shew to thee.

4Then Samuel did as the Lord had said to him. And he came to Bethlehem, and the ancients of the city wondered, and meeting him, they said: Is thy coming hither peaceable?

5And he said: It is peaceable: I am come to offer sacrifice to the Lord, be ye sanctified, and come with me to the sacrifice. And he sanctified Isai and his sons, and called them to the sacrifice.

6And when they were come in, he saw Eliab, and said: Is the Lord’s anointed before him?

7And the Lord said to Samuel: Look not on his countenance, nor on the height of his stature: because I have rejected him, nor do I judge according to the look of man: for man seeth those things that appear, but the Lord beholdeth the heart.

8And Isai called Abinadab, and brought him before Samuel. And he said: Neither hath the Lord chosen this.

9And Isai brought Samma, and he said of him: Neither hath the Lord chosen this.

10Isai therefore brought his seven sons before Samuel: and Samuel said to Isai: The Lord hath not chosen any one of these.

11And Samuel said to Isai: Are here all thy sons? He answered: There remaineth yet a young one, who keepeth the sheep. And Samuel said to Isai: Send, and fetch him, for we will not sit down till he come hither.

12He sent therefore and brought him Now he was ruddy and beautiful to behold, and of a comely face. And the Lord said: Arise, and anoint him, for this is he.

13Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day forward: and Samuel rose up, and went to Ramatha.

14But the spirit of the Lord departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the Lord troubled him.

15And the servants of Saul said to him: Behold now an evil spirit from God troubleth thee.

16Let our lord give orders, and thy servants who are before thee will seek out a man skillful in playing on the harp, that when the evil spirit from the Lord is upon thee, he may play with his hand, and thou mayest bear it more easily.

17And Saul said to his servants: Provide me then some man that can play well, and bring him to me.

18And one of the servants answering, said: Behold I have seen a son of Isai the Bethlehemite, a skillful player, and one of great strength, and a man fit for war, and prudent in his words, and a comely person: and the Lord is with him.

19Then Saul sent messengers to Isai, saying: Send me David thy son, who is in the pastures.

20And Isai took an ass laden with bread, and a bottle of wine, and a kid of the flock, and sent them by the hand of David his son to Saul.

21And David came to Saul, and stood before him: and he loved him exceedingly, and made him his armourbearer.

22And Saul sent to Isai, saying: Let David stand before me: for he hath found favour in my sight.

23So whensoever the evil spirit from the Lord was upon Saul, David took his harp, and played with his hand, and Saul was refreshed, and was better, for the evil spirit departed from him.

1ĐỨC CHÚA phán với ông Sa-mu-en : “Ngươi còn khóc thương Sa-un cho đến bao giờ, khi ta đã gạt bỏ nó, không cho làm vua cai trị Ít-ra-en nữa ? Ngươi hãy lấy dầu đổ đầy sừng và lên đường. Ta sai ngươi đến gặp Gie-sê người Bê-lem, vì Ta đã thấy trong các con trai nó một người Ta muốn đặt làm vua.”

2Ông Sa-mu-en thưa : “Con đi thế nào được ? Vua Sa-un mà nghe biết thì vua sẽ giết con !” ĐỨC CHÚA phán : “Ngươi hãy đem theo một con bò cái tơ và hãy nói : ‘Tôi tới đây là để dâng hy lễ lên ĐỨC CHÚA.’

4Ông Sa-mu-en làm điều ĐỨC CHÚA đã phán ; ông đến Bê-lem và các kỳ mục trong thành run sợ ra đón ông. Họ nói : “Ông đến có phải là để đem bình an không ?”

5Ông trả lời : “Bình an ! Tôi tới đây là để dâng hy lễ lên ĐỨC CHÚA. Các ông hãy thanh tẩy mình và đến dự hy lễ với tôi.” Ông thanh tẩy ông Gie-sê và các con trai ông ấy và mời họ đến dự hy lễ.

6Khi họ đến, ông thấy Ê-li-áp, ông nghĩ : “Đúng rồi ! Người ĐỨC CHÚA xức dầu tấn phong đang ở trước mặt ĐỨC CHÚA đây !”

7Nhưng ĐỨC CHÚA phán với ông Sa-mu-en : “Đừng xét theo hình dáng và vóc người cao lớn của nó, vì Ta đã gạt bỏ nó. Thiên Chúa không nhìn theo kiểu người phàm : người phàm chỉ thấy điều mắt thấy, còn ĐỨC CHÚA thì thấy tận đáy lòng.”

8Ông Gie-sê gọi A-vi-na-đáp và cho cậu đi qua trước mặt Sa-mu-en, nhưng ông Sa-mu-en nói : “Cả người này, ĐỨC CHÚA cũng không chọn.”

9Ông Gie-sê cho Sa-ma đi qua, nhưng ông Sa-mu-en nói : “Cả người này, ĐỨC CHÚA cũng không chọn.”

10Ông Gie-sê cho bảy người con trai đi qua trước mặt ông Sa-mu-en, nhưng ông Sa-mu-en nói với ông Gie-sê : “ĐỨC CHÚA không chọn những người này.”

11Rồi ông lại hỏi ông Gie-sê : “Các con ông có mặt đầy đủ chưa ?” Ông Gie-sê trả lời : “Còn cháu út nữa, nó đang chăn chiên.” Ông Sa-mu-en liền nói với ông Gie-sê : “Xin ông cho người đi tìm nó về, chúng ta sẽ không nhập tiệc trước khi nó tới đây.”

12Ông Gie-sê cho người đi đón cậu về. Cậu có mái tóc hung, đôi mắt đẹp và khuôn mặt xinh xắn. ĐỨC CHÚA phán với ông Sa-mu-en : “Đứng dậy, xức dầu tấn phong nó đi ! Chính nó đó !”

13Ông Sa-mu-en cầm lấy sừng dầu và xức cho cậu, ở giữa các anh của cậu. Thần khí ĐỨC CHÚA nhập vào Đa-vít từ ngày đó trở đi. Ông Sa-mu-en đứng dậy và đi Ra-ma.

14Thần khí ĐỨC CHÚA rời khỏi vua Sa-un và một thần khí xấu từ ĐỨC CHÚA đến ám vua.

15Triều thần nói với vua Sa-un : “Ngài thấy đó, một thần khí xấu của Thiên Chúa ám ngài.

16Xin ngài truyền. Bề tôi của ngài đang ở trước mặt ngài : họ sẽ tìm một người biết gảy đàn, và khi thần khí xấu của Thiên Chúa xuống trên ngài, thì người ấy sẽ gảy đàn và ngài sẽ cảm thấy dễ chịu.”

17Vua Sa-un nói với triều thần : “Các người hãy đi tìm cho ta một tay gảy đàn giỏi và đưa đến cho ta.”

18Một người trong đám gia nhân thưa rằng : “Tôi biết ông Gie-sê người Bê-lem, có một người con trai biết gảy đàn. Anh ta là một dũng sĩ can đảm, một chiến binh, một người có tài ăn nói, đẹp trai, và ĐỨC CHÚA ở với anh.”

19Vua Sa-un sai sứ giả đến với ông Gie-sê và nói với ông : “Ngươi hãy gửi cho ta Đa-vít, con ngươi, đứa chăn chiên.”

20Ông Gie-sê bắt một con lừa, cho chở bánh, một bầu da rượu, và một con dê con, rồi sai Đa-vít, con ông, mang đến cho vua Sa-un.

21Đa-vít đến với vua Sa-un và chầu chực trước mặt vua. Vua thương cậu lắm và cậu trở thành người hầu cận của vua.

22Vua Sa-un sai người đến nói với ông Gie-sê : “Hãy để Đa-vít chầu chực trước mặt ta, vì nó được đẹp lòng ta.”

23Như vậy, khi thần khí Thiên Chúa xuống trên vua Sa-un, thì Đa-vít cầm đàn và gảy. Bấy giờ vua Sa-un nguôi bệnh, cảm thấy dễ chịu, và thần khí xấu rời khỏi vua.
