Ét-te

1Ngày mười ba tháng thứ mười hai, tức là tháng A-đa, mệnh lệnh và chỉ dụ của vua đến lúc phải thi hành. Trong ngày kẻ thù của người Do-thái mong thắng được họ, thì người Do-thái đã lật ngược thế cờ : chính họ đã thắng những kẻ thù ghét họ.

2Người Do-thái tụ họp lại trong các thành của họ, trong mọi miền thuộc quyền vua A-suê-rô, để tra tay hại những kẻ mưu hại họ. Không ai dám đương đầu với họ, vì các dân đều khiếp sợ người Do-thái.

3Mọi quan chức các miền, mọi tổng đốc và công chức nhà vua đều yểm trợ người Do-thái vì rất sợ ông Moóc-đo-khai.

4Quả thế, ông Moóc-đo-khai là nhân vật có thế lực trong hoàng cung và danh tiếng của ông lan ra khắp mọi miền. Quả thế, uy tín của ông Moóc-đo-khai ngày càng lớn.

5Người Do-thái dùng gươm đâm chém hết mọi địch thù của họ. Đó là một cuộc tàn sát, một cuộc tận diệt. Họ đối xử tuỳ thích với những kẻ thù ghét họ.

6Trong thành Su-san, có đến năm trăm người bị giết chết, bị tận diệt.

7Ngoài ra họ còn giết Pác-san-đa-tha, Đa-lơ-phôn, Át-pa-tha,

8Pô-ra-tha, A-đan-gia, A-ri-đa-tha,

9Pác-mát-ta, A-ri-xai, A-ri-đai và Vai-da-tha,

10tức là mười người con của Ha-man, cháu ông Hăm-mơ-đa-tha. Ha-man vốn là cừu địch của người Do-thái. Nhưng những người này không tra tay cướp của.

11Chính ngày ấy, con số những người bị giết trong thành Su-san được đệ trình lên vua.

12Vua nói với hoàng hậu Ét-te : “Nội trong thành Su-san, người Do-thái đã giết chết, đã tận diệt năm trăm người cùng với mười người con của Ha-man ; thế thì họ đã làm gì trong các miền khác thuộc quyền vua ? Khanh thỉnh cầu gì, ta sẽ ban cho ; khanh có muốn xin gì nữa thì cũng sẽ được.”

13Bà Ét-te thưa : “Nếu đẹp lòng đức vua, xin ban phép cho người Do-thái ở Su-san ngày mai cũng được hành động như sắc chỉ đã cho phép hành động ngày hôm nay ; còn mười đứa con của Ha-man thì xin treo cổ chúng lên giá.”

14Vua truyền làm như thế. Một sắc chỉ được công bố ở Su-san, và mười người con của Ha-man bị treo cổ.

15Người Do-thái ở Su-san tụ họp lại cả ngày mười bốn tháng A-đa nữa và ở đó đã giết thêm ba trăm người. Nhưng họ đã không tra tay cướp của.

16Những người Do-thái khác trong các miền thuộc quyền vua cũng tụ họp lại để tự bảo vệ tính mạng và sống yên ổn, không sợ địch thù nữa. Họ đã giết bảy mươi lăm ngàn kẻ thù ghét họ, nhưng không tra tay cướp của.

17Đó là ngày mười ba tháng A-đa. Ngày mười bốn cùng tháng, họ nghỉ ngơi và biến ngày này thành một ngày tiệc tùng vui vẻ.

18Còn những người Do-thái ở Su-san thì tụ họp lại ngày mười ba và ngày mười bốn tháng ấy ; họ nghỉ ngơi ngày mười lăm và biến ngày này thành một ngày tiệc tùng vui vẻ.

19Còn những người ở thành phố thì hân hoan mừng ngày mười lăm tháng A-đa như ngày lễ ; ngày đó, họ cũng gửi phần ăn cho người thân cận.

20Ông Moóc-đo-khai ghi chép các sự việc đó và gửi thư cho mọi người Do-thái trong khắp các miền thuộc quyền vua A-suê-rô, kẻ ở gần cũng như người ở xa.

21Ông truyền cho họ hằng năm phải biến ngày mười bốn và ngày mười lăm tháng A-đa

22thành những ngày người Do-thái được sống yên ổn, không phải sợ hãi thù địch. Ông cũng truyền phải mừng tháng A-đa : tháng đó, phiền muộn biến thành hân hoan, ngày tang tóc trở nên ngày đại lễ. Họ phải biến những ngày ấy thành những ngày tiệc tùng vui vẻ, một cơ hội gửi phần ăn cho nhau và quà tặng cho người nghèo.

23Những điều người Do-thái bắt đầu giữ và những gì ông Moóc-đo-khai đã viết cho họ, thì họ công nhận làm tập tục.

24Quả thế, cừu địch của mọi người Do-thái là Ha-man, con ông Hăm-mơ-đa-tha người A-gác, đã âm mưu chống lại người Do-thái nhằm tận diệt họ ; y đã gieo “Pua” (nghĩa là bắt thăm) để loại trừ và tận diệt họ.

25Nhưng khi bà Ét-te đến trước mặt vua, thì vua ban sắc chỉ truyền rằng : âm mưu độc ác Ha-man đã nghĩ ra để chống người Do-thái phải quay lại giáng xuống đầu y ; y cùng với các con phải bị treo cổ lên giá.

26Vì vậy, người ta gọi những ngày này Pu-rim, do tiếng “Pua”. Cũng vì mọi lời viết trong lá thư trên, vì những gì liên quan đến sự việc họ đã chứng kiến, và vì những chuyện đã xảy đến cho họ,

27nên người Do-thái đã quy định và công nhận việc sau đây làm tập tục không thể huỷ bỏ được đối với họ cũng như dòng dõi họ và tất cả những ai liên kết với họ : hằng năm, họ phải mừng hai ngày đó theo như đã ghi chép và vào thời gian đã ấn định.

28Đời đời, phải kỷ niệm và mừng những ngày đó trong mỗi gia đình, mỗi miền và mỗi thành. Người Do-thái không được bãi bỏ những ngày Pu-rim ấy, cũng không được để cho dòng dõi họ quên những ngày ấy.

29Hoàng hậu Ét-te, ái nữ của ông A-vi-kha-gin, cùng với ông Moóc-đo-khai người Do-thái, lấy tất cả uy tín của mình mà viết văn thư phê chuẩn văn thư thứ hai trên đây về lễ Pu-rim.

30Ông Moóc-đo-khai đã gửi các văn thư ấy đến tất cả mọi người Do-thái ở một trăm hai mươi bảy tỉnh trong vương quốc của vua A-suê-rô kèm theo những lời lẽ chân thành cầu chúc bình an.

31Mục đích của văn thư ấy là để thiết lập những ngày lễ Pu-rim vào đúng thời gian như ông Moóc-đo-khai người Do-thái và hoàng hậu Ét-te đã ấn định cho họ và theo đúng cách thức các vị ấy đã quy định cho họ và dòng dõi họ về việc ăn chay và kêu cầu.

32Như thế, lệnh của bà Ét-te đã phê chuẩn các điều liên hệ đến lễ Pu-rim và đã được ghi vào sách.

1Now in the twelfth month, that is, the month Adar, on the thirteenth day of the same, when the king’s commandment and his decree drew near to be put in execution, in the day that the enemies of the Jews hoped to have power over them, (though it was turned to the contrary, that the Jews had rule over them that hated them;)

2The Jews gathered themselves together in their cities throughout all the provinces of the king Ahasuerus, to lay hand on such as sought their hurt: and no man could withstand them; for the fear of them fell upon all people.

3And all the rulers of the provinces, and the lieutenants, and the deputies, and officers of the king, helped the Jews; because the fear of Mordecai fell upon them.

4For Mordecai was great in the king’s house, and his fame went out throughout all the provinces: for this man Mordecai waxed greater and greater.

5Thus the Jews smote all their enemies with the stroke of the sword, and slaughter, and destruction, and did what they would unto those that hated them.

6And in Shushan the palace the Jews slew and destroyed five hundred men.

7And Parshandatha, and Dalphon, and Aspatha,

8And Poratha, and Adalia, and Aridatha,

9And Parmashta, and Arisai, and Aridai, and Vajezatha,

10The ten sons of Haman the son of Hammedatha, the enemy of the Jews, slew they; but on the spoil laid they not their hand.

11On that day the number of those that were slain in Shushan the palace was brought before the king.

12¶ And the king said unto Esther the queen, The Jews have slain and destroyed five hundred men in Shushan the palace, and the ten sons of Haman; what have they done in the rest of the king’s provinces? now what is thy petition? and it shall be granted thee: or what is thy request further? and it shall be done.

13Then said Esther, If it please the king, let it be granted to the Jews which are in Shushan to do to morrow also according unto this day’s decree, and let Haman’s ten sons be hanged upon the gallows.

14And the king commanded it so to be done: and the decree was given at Shushan; and they hanged Haman’s ten sons.

15For the Jews that were in Shushan gathered themselves together on the fourteenth day also of the month Adar, and slew three hundred men at Shushan; but on the prey they laid not their hand.

16But the other Jews that were in the king’s provinces gathered themselves together, and stood for their lives, and had rest from their enemies, and slew of their foes seventy and five thousand, but they laid not their hands on the prey,

17On the thirteenth day of the month Adar; and on the fourteenth day of the same rested they, and made it a day of feasting and gladness.

18But the Jews that were at Shushan assembled together on the thirteenth day thereof, and on the fourteenth thereof; and on the fifteenth day of the same they rested, and made it a day of feasting and gladness.

19Therefore the Jews of the villages, that dwelt in the unwalled towns, made the fourteenth day of the month Adar a day of gladness and feasting, and a good day, and of sending portions one to another.

20¶ And Mordecai wrote these things, and sent letters unto all the Jews that were in all the provinces of the king Ahasuerus, both nigh and far,

21To stablish this among them, that they should keep the fourteenth day of the month Adar, and the fifteenth day of the same, yearly,

22As the days wherein the Jews rested from their enemies, and the month which was turned unto them from sorrow to joy, and from mourning into a good day: that they should make them days of feasting and joy, and of sending portions one to another, and gifts to the poor.

23And the Jews undertook to do as they had begun, and as Mordecai had written unto them;

24Because Haman the son of Hammedatha, the Agagite, the enemy of all the Jews, had devised against the Jews to destroy them, and had cast Pur, that is, the lot, to consume them, and to destroy them;

25But when Esther came before the king, he commanded by letters that his wicked device, which he devised against the Jews, should return upon his own head, and that he and his sons should be hanged on the gallows.

26Wherefore they called these days Purim after the name of Pur. Therefore for all the words of this letter, and of that which they had seen concerning this matter, and which had come unto them,

27The Jews ordained, and took upon them, and upon their seed, and upon all such as joined themselves unto them, so as it should not fail, that they would keep these two days according to their writing, and according to their appointed time every year;

28And that these days should be remembered and kept throughout every generation, every family, every province, and every city; and that these days of Purim should not fail from among the Jews, nor the memorial of them perish from their seed.

29Then Esther the queen, the daughter of Abihail, and Mordecai the Jew, wrote with all authority, to confirm this second letter of Purim.

30And he sent the letters unto all the Jews, to the hundred twenty and seven provinces of the kingdom of Ahasuerus, with words of peace and truth,

31To confirm these days of Purim in their times appointed, according as Mordecai the Jew and Esther the queen had enjoined them, and as they had decreed for themselves and for their seed, the matters of the fastings and their cry.

32And the decree of Esther confirmed these matters of Purim; and it was written in the book.
