Numbers

1The people were complaining in the ears of the LORD. When the LORD heard it, his anger burnt; and the LORD’s fire burnt amongst them, and consumed some of the outskirts of the camp.

2The people cried to Moses; and Moses prayed to the LORD, and the fire abated.

3The name of that place was called Taberah,because the LORD’s fire burnt amongst them.

4The mixed multitude that was amongst them lusted exceedingly; and the children of Israel also wept again, and said, “Who will give us meat to eat?

5We remember the fish, which we ate in Egypt for nothing; the cucumbers, and the melons, and the leeks, and the onions, and the garlic;

6but now we have lost our appetite. There is nothing at all except this manna to look at.”

7The manna was like coriander seed, and it looked like bdellium.

8The people went around, gathered it, and ground it in mills, or beat it in mortars, and boiled it in pots, and made cakes of it. Its taste was like the taste of fresh oil.

9When the dew fell on the camp in the night, the manna fell on it.

10Moses heard the people weeping throughout their families, every man at the door of his tent; and the LORD’s anger burnt greatly; and Moses was displeased.

11Moses said to the LORD, “Why have you treated your servant so badly? Why haven’t I found favour in your sight, that you lay the burden of all this people on me?

12Have I conceived all this people? Have I brought them out, that you should tell me, ‘Carry them in your bosom, as a nurse carries a nursing infant, to the land which you swore to their fathers’?

13Where could I get meat to give all these people? For they weep before me, saying, ‘Give us meat, that we may eat.’

14I am not able to bear all this people alone, because it is too heavy for me.

15If you treat me this way, please kill me right now, if I have found favour in your sight; and don’t let me see my wretchedness.”

16The LORD said to Moses, “Gather to me seventy men of the elders of Israel, whom you know to be the elders of the people and officers over them; and bring them to the Tent of Meeting, that they may stand there with you.

17I will come down and talk with you there. I will take of the Spirit which is on you, and will put it on them; and they shall bear the burden of the people with you, that you don’t bear it yourself alone.

18“Say to the people, ‘Sanctify yourselves in preparation for tomorrow, and you will eat meat; for you have wept in the ears of the LORD, saying, “Who will give us meat to eat? For it was well with us in Egypt.” Therefore the LORD will give you meat, and you will eat.

19You will not eat just one day, or two days, or five days, or ten days, or twenty days,

20but a whole month, until it comes out at your nostrils, and it is loathsome to you; because you have rejected the LORD who is amongst you, and have wept before him, saying, “Why did we come out of Egypt?”’”

21Moses said, “The people, amongst whom I am, are six hundred thousand men on foot; and you have said, ‘I will give them meat, that they may eat a whole month.’

22Shall flocks and herds be slaughtered for them, to be sufficient for them? Shall all the fish of the sea be gathered together for them, to be sufficient for them?”

23The LORD said to Moses, “Has the LORD’s hand grown short? Now you will see whether my word will happen to you or not.”

24Moses went out, and told the people the LORD’s words; and he gathered seventy men of the elders of the people, and set them around the Tent.

25The LORD came down in the cloud, and spoke to him, and took of the Spirit that was on him, and put it on the seventy elders. When the Spirit rested on them, they prophesied, but they did so no more.

26But two men remained in the camp. The name of one was Eldad, and the name of the other Medad; and the Spirit rested on them. They were of those who were written, but had not gone out to the Tent; and they prophesied in the camp.

27A young man ran, and told Moses, and said, “Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp!”

28Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of Moses, one of his chosen men, answered, “My lord Moses, forbid them!”

29Moses said to him, “Are you jealous for my sake? I wish that all the LORD’s people were prophets, that the LORD would put his Spirit on them!”

30Moses went into the camp, he and the elders of Israel.

31A wind from the LORD went out and brought quails from the sea, and let them fall by the camp, about a day’s journey on this side, and a day’s journey on the other side, around the camp, and about two cubitsabove the surface of the earth.

32The people rose up all that day, and all of that night, and all the next day, and gathered the quails. He who gathered least gathered ten homers;and they spread them all out for themselves around the camp.

33While the meat was still between their teeth, before it was chewed, the LORD’s anger burnt against the people, and the LORD struck the people with a very great plague.

34The name of that place was called Kibroth Hattaavah,because there they buried the people who lusted.

35From Kibroth Hattaavah the people travelled to Hazeroth; and they stayed at Hazeroth.

1Thế rồi dân bắt đầu kêu ca thấu tai ĐỨC CHÚA vì những khổ cực của họ, và ĐỨC CHÚA đã nghe được. Cơn thịnh nộ của Người bừng lên và lửa của ĐỨC CHÚA bốc cháy nơi họ ở và thiêu huỷ đầu trại.

2Dân liền kêu cứu ông Mô-sê, ông Mô-sê chuyển cầu lên ĐỨC CHÚA, và lửa đã tắt.

3Người ta đặt tên cho nơi đó là Táp-ê-ra, vì lửa của ĐỨC CHÚA đã bốc cháy nơi họ ở.

4Đám dân ô hợp sống giữa dân Ít-ra-en bắt đầu thèm ăn, và cả con cái Ít-ra-en cũng khóc lóc mà nói : “Ai sẽ cho chúng ta có thịt ăn đây ?

5Nhớ thuở nào ta ăn cá bên Ai-cập mà không phải trả tiền, rồi nào dưa gang, dưa bở, nào hẹ, nào hành, nào tỏi.

6Còn bây giờ đời ta tàn rồi ; mọi thứ đó hết sạch, chỉ còn thấy man-na thôi.”

7Man-na như hạt ngò và trông nó như nhựa hương.

8Dân cứ việc chia nhau đi lượm, cho vào cối xay hoặc cối giã mà nghiền tán ra, rồi bỏ vào nồi nấu bánh, và mùi vị của nó như mùi vị bánh chiên dầu.

9Đêm về sương rơi trên doanh trại, thì man-na cũng rơi xuống.

10Ông Mô-sê nghe thấy dân tụm năm tụm bảy theo thị tộc mà kêu khóc tại cửa lều của mình. Còn ĐỨC CHÚA thì bừng bừng nổi giận. Ông lấy làm khổ tâm

11và thưa với ĐỨC CHÚA : “Sao Ngài lại làm khổ tôi tớ Ngài ? Tại sao con lại không đẹp lòng Ngài, khiến Ngài đặt gánh nặng tất cả dân này lên con ?

12Có phải con đã cưu mang tất cả dân này không ? Có phải con đã sinh ra nó không mà Ngài lại bảo con : ‘Hãy bồng nó vào lòng, như vú nuôi bồng trẻ thơ, mà đem vào miền đất Ta đã thề hứa với cha ông chúng ?’

13Con lấy đâu ra thịt cho cả dân này ăn, khi chúng khóc lóc đòi con : ‘Cho chúng tôi thịt để chúng tôi ăn ?’

14Một mình con không thể gánh cả dân này được nữa, vì nó nặng quá sức con.

15Nếu Ngài xử với con như vậy, thì thà giết con đi còn hơn – ấy là nếu con đẹp lòng Ngài ! Đừng để con thấy mình phải khổ nữa !”

16ĐỨC CHÚA phán với ông Mô-sê : “Hãy tập họp lại cho Ta bảy mươi người trong số kỳ mục Ít-ra-en, những kẻ ngươi biết là kỳ mục và ký lục trong dân. Ngươi sẽ đem chúng đến Lều Hội Ngộ, để chúng đứng đó với ngươi.

17Ta sẽ xuống đó nói chuyện với ngươi. Ta sẽ lấy một phần Thần Khí đang ngự trên ngươi mà đặt trên chúng, chúng sẽ cùng với ngươi gánh vác dân này, và ngươi sẽ không còn phải vác một mình nữa.”

18Ngươi hãy nói với dân : “Anh em hãy thanh tẩy mình để chuẩn bị cho ngày mai và anh em sẽ được ăn thịt. Phải, anh em đã kêu khóc thấu tai ĐỨC CHÚA rằng : ‘Ai sẽ cho chúng ta có thịt ăn đây ? Bên Ai-cập, chúng ta sướng biết mấy !‘ ĐỨC CHÚA sẽ ban thịt cho anh em, và anh em sẽ được ăn.

19Anh em sẽ ăn, không phải một ngày, hai ngày, năm mười ngày, hay hai mươi ngày mà thôi,

20nhưng suốt cả tháng, cho đến khi thịt lòi ra lỗ mũi làm anh em phát ngấy, vì anh em đã khinh thường ĐỨC CHÚA, Đấng ngự giữa anh em, và đã kêu khóc trước nhan Người rằng : Chúng tôi ra khỏi Ai-cập để làm gì ?”

21Ông Mô-sê lại nói : “Con ở giữa một dân có đến sáu trăm ngàn bộ binh, mà ĐỨC CHÚA lại bảo : Ta sẽ ban thịt cho chúng, và chúng sẽ ăn suốt cả tháng.

22Dù có giết chiên giết bò, liệu có đủ cho họ không ? Dù có bắt hết cá dưới biển, liệu có đủ cho họ không ?”

23ĐỨC CHÚA phán với ông Mô-sê : “ĐỨC CHÚA mà chịu bó tay sao ? Bây giờ ngươi sẽ thấy lời Ta phán có đúng hay không.”

24Ông Mô-sê ra nói lại với dân những lời của ĐỨC CHÚA. Ông tập họp bảy mươi người trong số kỳ mục của dân và đặt họ đứng chung quanh Lều.

25ĐỨC CHÚA ngự xuống giữa đám mây và nói chuyện với ông Mô-sê. Người lấy một phần Thần Khí đang đậu trên ông mà đặt trên bảy mươi kỳ mục. Khi Thần Khí đậu xuống trên các ông thì các ông bắt đầu phát ngôn, nhưng việc đó không tái diễn nữa.

26Bấy giờ có hai người ở lại trong trại, một người tên là En-đát, một người tên là Mê-đát. Các ông đã được ghi trong danh sách kỳ mục, nhưng đã không đến Lều. Thần Khí đậu xuống trên các ông và các ông bắt đầu phát ngôn trong trại.

27Một người thanh niên chạy đi báo tin cho ông Mô-sê rằng : “Ông En-đát và ông Mê-đát đang phát ngôn trong trại !”

28Ông Giô-suê con ông Nun, từng theo hầu ông Mô-sê từ hồi còn nhỏ, lên tiếng nói với ông Mô-sê : “Thưa thầy, xin thầy ngăn cản họ !”

29Nhưng ông Mô-sê trả lời : “Anh ghen giùm tôi à ? Phải chi ĐỨC CHÚA ban Thần Khí trên toàn dân của Người để họ đều là ngôn sứ !” Vì ĐỨC CHÚA đã ban Thần Khí của Người trên họ.

30Ông Mô-sê đã vào trại cùng với các kỳ mục Ít-ra-en.

31Một luồng gió do ĐỨC CHÚA khơi dậy đã lùa chim cút từ phía biển tới, và thổi chúng dạt xuống trại thành một đường dài đi một ngày mới hết, ở bốn phía chung quanh trại, dày tới một thước trên mặt đất.

32Dân bận rộn lượm chim cút suốt ngày suốt đêm ấy và cả ngày hôm sau ; người lượm ít nhất cũng được hai trăm thùng, và họ đem phơi chung quanh trại.

33Thịt còn đang ở giữa hai hàm răng, chưa kịp nhai thì cơn thịnh nộ của ĐỨC CHÚA đã bừng lên trút xuống dân và ĐỨC CHÚA đã đánh phạt dân dữ dội.

34Và người ta đã đặt tên cho nơi đó là Kíp-rốt Ha Ta-a-va, vì ở đó họ đã chôn đám dân thèm ăn.

35Từ Kíp-rốt Ha Ta-a-va, dân chúng đã nhổ trại lên đường đi Kha-xê-rốt và ở lại đó.
