Exodus

1When the people saw that Moses delayed coming down from the mountain, the people gathered themselves together to Aaron, and said to him, “Come, make us gods, which shall go before us; for as for this Moses, the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we don’t know what has become of him.”

2Aaron said to them, “Take off the golden rings, which are in the ears of your wives, of your sons, and of your daughters, and bring them to me.”

3All the people took off the golden rings which were in their ears, and brought them to Aaron.

4He received what they handed him, fashioned it with an engraving tool, and made it a moulded calf. Then they said, “These are your gods, Israel, which brought you up out of the land of Egypt.”

5When Aaron saw this, he built an altar before it; and Aaron made a proclamation, and said, “Tomorrow shall be a feast to the LORD.”

6They rose up early on the next day, and offered burnt offerings, and brought peace offerings; and the people sat down to eat and to drink, and rose up to play.

7The LORD spoke to Moses, “Go, get down; for your people, whom you brought up out of the land of Egypt, have corrupted themselves!

8They have turned away quickly out of the way which I commanded them. They have made themselves a moulded calf, and have worshipped it, and have sacrificed to it, and said, ‘These are your gods, Israel, which brought you up out of the land of Egypt.’”

9The LORD said to Moses, “I have seen these people, and behold, they are a stiff-necked people.

10Now therefore leave me alone, that my wrath may burn hot against them, and that I may consume them; and I will make of you a great nation.”

11Moses begged the LORD his God, and said, “LORD, why does your wrath burn hot against your people, that you have brought out of the land of Egypt with great power and with a mighty hand?

12Why should the Egyptians talk, saying, ‘He brought them out for evil, to kill them in the mountains, and to consume them from the surface of the earth’? Turn from your fierce wrath, and turn away from this evil against your people.

13Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, your servants, to whom you swore by your own self, and said to them, ‘I will multiply your offspringas the stars of the sky, and all this land that I have spoken of I will give to your offspring, and they shall inherit it forever.’”

14So the LORD turned away from the evil which he said he would do to his people.

15Moses turned, and went down from the mountain, with the two tablets of the covenant in his hand; tablets that were written on both their sides. They were written on one side and on the other.

16The tablets were the work of God, and the writing was the writing of God, engraved on the tablets.

17When Joshua heard the noise of the people as they shouted, he said to Moses, “There is the noise of war in the camp.”

18He said, “It isn’t the voice of those who shout for victory. It is not the voice of those who cry for being overcome; but the noise of those who sing that I hear.”

19As soon as he came near to the camp, he saw the calf and the dancing. Then Moses’ anger grew hot, and he threw the tablets out of his hands, and broke them beneath the mountain.

20He took the calf which they had made, and burnt it with fire, ground it to powder, and scattered it on the water, and made the children of Israel drink it.

21Moses said to Aaron, “What did these people do to you, that you have brought a great sin on them?”

22Aaron said, “Don’t let the anger of my lord grow hot. You know the people, that they are set on evil.

23For they said to me, ‘Make us gods, which shall go before us. As for this Moses, the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we don’t know what has become of him.’

24I said to them, ‘Whoever has any gold, let them take it off.’ So they gave it to me; and I threw it into the fire, and out came this calf.”

25When Moses saw that the people were out of control, (for Aaron had let them lose control, causing derision amongst their enemies),

26then Moses stood in the gate of the camp, and said, “Whoever is on the LORD’s side, come to me!” All the sons of Levi gathered themselves together to him.

27He said to them, “The LORD, the God of Israel, says, ‘Every man put his sword on his thigh, and go back and forth from gate to gate throughout the camp, and every man kill his brother, and every man his companion, and every man his neighbour.’”

28The sons of Levi did according to the word of Moses. About three thousand men fell of the people that day.

29Moses said, “Consecrate yourselves today to the LORD, for every man was against his son and against his brother, that he may give you a blessing today.”

30On the next day, Moses said to the people, “You have sinned a great sin. Now I will go up to the LORD. Perhaps I shall make atonement for your sin.”

31Moses returned to the LORD, and said, “Oh, this people have sinned a great sin, and have made themselves gods of gold.

32Yet now, if you will, forgive their sin—and if not, please blot me out of your book which you have written.”

33The LORD said to Moses, “Whoever has sinned against me, I will blot him out of my book.

34Now go, lead the people to the place of which I have spoken to you. Behold, my angel shall go before you. Nevertheless, in the day when I punish, I will punish them for their sin.”

35The LORD struck the people, because of what they did with the calf, which Aaron made.

1Dân thấy ông Mô-sê lâu quá không xuống núi, bèn tụ họp bên ông A-ha-ron và nói với ông : “Xin ông đứng lên, làm cho chúng tôi một vị thần để dẫn đầu chúng tôi, vì chúng tôi không biết chuyện gì đã xảy ra cho cái ông Mô-sê này, là người đã đưa chúng tôi lên từ đất Ai-cập.”

2Ông A-ha-ron nói với họ : “Hãy gỡ các khuyên vàng mà vợ và con trai con gái anh em đeo ở tai, rồi đem đến cho tôi.”

3Toàn dân gỡ các khuyên vàng đeo tai và đem đến cho ông A-ha-ron.

4Ông lấy vàng từ tay họ trao cho, đem đúc và dùng dao mà gọt đẽo thành một con bê. Bấy giờ họ nói : “Hỡi Ít-ra-en, đây là thần của ngươi đã đưa ngươi lên từ đất Ai-cập.”

5Thấy vậy, ông A-ha-ron dựng một bàn thờ trước tượng con bê, rồi hô to : “Mai có lễ kính ĐỨC CHÚA !”

6Ngay hôm sau, họ dậy sớm, dâng tiến những của lễ toàn thiêu và những lễ vật kỳ an. Dân ngồi xuống ăn uống, rồi đứng lên bày trò vui chơi.

7ĐỨC CHÚA phán với ông Mô-sê : “Hãy đi xuống, vì dân ngươi đã hư hỏng rồi, dân mà ngươi đã đưa lên từ đất Ai-cập.

8Chúng đã vội đi ra ngoài con đường Ta truyền cho chúng đi. Chúng đã đúc một con bê, rồi sụp xuống lạy nó, tế nó và nói : ‘Hỡi Ít-ra-en, đây là thần của ngươi đã đưa ngươi lên từ đất Ai-cập.’

9ĐỨC CHÚA lại phán với ông Mô-sê : ‘Ta đã thấy dân này rồi, đó là một dân cứng đầu cứng cổ.

10Bây giờ cứ để mặc Ta, cứ để cơn thịnh nộ của Ta bừng lên phạt chúng, và Ta sẽ tiêu diệt chúng. Nhưng Ta sẽ làm cho ngươi thành một dân lớn’.”

11Ông Mô-sê cố làm cho nét mặt ĐỨC CHÚA, Thiên Chúa của ông, dịu lại. Ông thưa : “Lạy ĐỨC CHÚA, tại sao Ngài lại bừng bừng nổi giận với dân Ngài, dân mà Ngài đã giơ cánh tay mạnh mẽ uy quyền đưa ra khỏi đất Ai-cập ?

12Tại sao người Ai-cập lại có thể rêu rao : Chính vì ác tâm mà Người đã đưa chúng ra, để giết chúng trong miền núi và tiêu diệt chúng khỏi mặt đất ? Xin Ngài nguôi cơn thịnh nộ và xin Ngài thương đừng hại dân Ngài.

13Xin Ngài nhớ đến các tôi tớ Ngài là Áp-ra-ham, I-xa-ác và Ít-ra-en ; Ngài đã lấy chính danh Ngài mà thề với các vị ấy rằng : Ta sẽ làm cho dòng dõi các ngươi đông đúc như sao trên trời, và sẽ ban cho dòng dõi các ngươi tất cả miền đất ấy, là miền đất Ta đã hứa ; chúng sẽ được thừa hưởng miền đất ấy đến muôn đời.”

14ĐỨC CHÚA đã thương, không giáng phạt dân Người như Người đã đe.

15Ông Mô-sê từ núi trở xuống, tay cầm hai tấm bia Chứng Ước ; những bia ấy có viết cả hai mặt, mặt trước cũng như mặt sau.

16Những bia ấy là do Thiên Chúa làm ra, chữ là chữ của Thiên Chúa, khắc trên các bia.

17Ông Giô-suê nghe tiếng dân reo hò, thì nói với ông Mô-sê : “Có tiếng giao tranh trong trại !”

18không phải lời than bại trận mà là tiếng ca đối đáp !”

19Vậy khi đến gần trại, ông thấy con bê và những bọn người đang nhảy múa. Ông Mô-sê nổi cơn thịnh nộ : Ông ném các tấm bia đang cầm trong tay và đập vỡ dưới chân núi.

20Ông lấy con bê họ đã làm, đốt đi, tán nhuyễn ra, rắc lên mặt nước, rồi bắt con cái Ít-ra-en uống.

21Ông Mô-sê bảo ông A-ha-ron : “Dân này đã làm gì ông mà ông đưa họ tới chỗ phạm một tội lớn như thế ?”

22Ông A-ha-ron nói : “Xin ngài chớ bừng bừng nổi giận ; chính ngài biết : dân này có khuynh hướng xấu.

23Họ nói với tôi : Xin ông làm cho chúng tôi một vị thần để dẫn đầu chúng tôi, vì chúng tôi không biết chuyện gì đã xảy ra cho cái ông Mô-sê này, là người đã đưa chúng tôi lên từ đất Ai-cập.

24Tôi nói với họ : Ai có vàng ? Họ đã gỡ đồ vàng đeo tai và đưa cho tôi ; tôi ném vào lửa, và đã ra con bê này.”

25Ông Mô-sê thấy dân sống buông thả, vì ông A-ha-ron đã để họ sống buông thả, khiến họ nên trò cười cho địch thủ của họ.

26Ông Mô-sê đứng ở cổng trại và hô : “Ai thờ ĐỨC CHÚA thì theo tôi !” Tất cả con cái ông Lê-vi đều tập họp bên ông Mô-sê.

27Ông bảo họ : “ĐỨC CHÚA, Thiên Chúa của Ít-ra-en, phán thế này : Mỗi người hãy đeo gươm vào. Hãy đi đi lại lại trong khắp trại, từ cửa này sang cửa khác mà giết : kẻ thì giết anh em, người thì giết bạn hữu, kẻ thì giết người thân cận của mình.”

28Con cái ông Lê-vi đã làm theo lời ông Mô-sê ; trong ngày ấy, có ba ngàn người trong dân đã ngã gục.

29Ông Mô-sê nói : “Hôm nay, anh em được phong chức để phục vụ ĐỨC CHÚA, vì kẻ thì đã hy sinh con mình, kẻ thì đã hy sinh anh em mình, khiến Người chúc phúc cho anh em hôm nay.”

30Ngày hôm sau, ông Mô-sê nói với dân : “Anh em đã phạm một tội lớn, nhưng giờ đây tôi sắp lên gặp ĐỨC CHÚA ; may ra tôi sẽ xin được Người xá tội cho anh em.”

31Ông Mô-sê trở lại với ĐỨC CHÚA và thưa : “Than ôi, dân này đã phạm một tội lớn ! Họ đã làm cho mình một tượng thần bằng vàng !

32Nhưng giờ đây, ước gì Ngài miễn chấp tội họ ! Bằng không, thì xin Ngài xoá tên con khỏi cuốn sách Ngài đã viết.”

33ĐỨC CHÚA phán với ông Mô-sê : “Kẻ nào phạm tội làm mất lòng Ta, Ta sẽ xoá tên nó khỏi cuốn sách của Ta.

34Bây giờ, ngươi hãy đi, đưa dân tới nơi Ta đã chỉ cho ngươi. Này thiên sứ của Ta sẽ đi trước mặt ngươi ; nhưng đến ngày Ta trừng phạt, Ta sẽ trừng phạt chúng vì tội đã phạm.”

35ĐỨC CHÚA đánh phạt dân vì họ đã đúc con bê, chính con bê mà ông A-ha-ron đã đúc.
