2 Maccabees

1But Nicanor, hearing that Judas and his company were in the region of Samaria, resolved to attack them with complete safety on the day of rest.

2When the Jews who were compelled to follow him said, “Don’t destroy so savagely and barbarously, but give due glory to the day which he who sees all things has honoured and hallowed above other days.”

3Then the thrice-accursed wretch asked if there were a Sovereign in heaven who had commanded to keep the Sabbath day.

4When they declared, “There is the Lord, living himself as Sovereign in heaven, who told us observe the seventh day.”

5He replied, “I also am a sovereign on the earth, who commands you to take up weapons and execute the king’s business.” Nevertheless he didn’t prevail to execute his cruel plan.

6And Nicanor,in his utter boastfulness and arrogance, had determined to set up a monument of complete victory over Judas and all those who were with him.

7But Maccabaeus still trusted unceasingly, with all hope that he should obtain help from the Lord.

8He exhorted his company not to be fearful at the assault of the heathen, but keeping in mind the help which in former times they had often received from heaven, so now also to look for the victory which would come to them from the Almighty,

9and encouraging them out of the law and the prophets, and reminding them of the conflicts that they had won, he made them more eager.

10And when he had aroused their courage, he gave them orders, at the same time pointing out the faithlessness of the heathen and their breach of their oaths.

11Arming each one of them, not so much with the sure defence of shields and spears as with the encouragement of good words, and moreover relating to them a dream worthy to be believed, he made them all exceedingly glad.

12The vision of that dream was this: Onias, he who had been high priest, a noble and good man, modest in bearing, yet gentle in manner and well-spoken, and trained from a child in all points of virtue, with outstretched hands invoking blessings on the whole body of the Jews.

13Then he saw a man appear, of venerable age and exceeding glory, and the dignity around him was wonderful and most majestic.

14Onias answered and said, “This is the lover of the kindred, he who prays much for the people and the holy city: Jeremiah the prophet of God.

15Jeremiah stretched out his right hand and delivered to Judas a gold sword, and in giving it addressed him thus:

16“Take this holy sword, a gift from God, with which you shall strike down the adversaries.”

17Being encouraged by the words of Judas, which were noble and effective, and able to incite to virtue and to stir the souls of the young to manly courage, they determined not to carry on a campaign, but nobly to bear down upon the enemy, and fighting hand to hand with all courage bring the matter to a conclusion, because the city, the sanctuary, and the temple were in danger.

18For their fear for wives and children, and furthermore for family and relatives, was less important to them; but greatest and first was their fear for the consecrated sanctuary.

19Also those who were shut up in the city were in no light distress, being troubled because of the encounter in the open country.

20When all were now waiting for the decision of the issue, and the enemy had already joined battle, and the army had been set in array, and the elephantsbrought back to a convenient post,and the cavalry deployed on the flanks,

21Maccabaeus, perceiving the presence of thetroops, and the various weapons with which they were equipped, and the savageness of theelephants, holding up his hands to heaven called upon the Lord who works wonders, knowing that success comes not by weapons, but that, according to how the Lord judges, he gains the victory for those who are worthy.

22And calling upon God, he said this: “You, O Sovereign Lord, sent your angel in the time of King Hezekiah of Judea, and he killed of thearmy of Sennacherib as many as one hundred and eighty-five thousand.

23So now also, O Sovereign of the heavens, send a good angel before us to bring terror and trembling.

24Through the greatness of your arm let them be stricken with dismay who with blasphemy have come here against your holy people.” As he finished these words,

25Nicanor and his company advanced with trumpets and victory songs;

26but Judas and his company joined battle with the enemy with invocation and prayers.

27Fighting with their hands and praying to God with their hearts, they killed no less than thirty-five thousand men, being made exceedingly glad by the manifestation of God.

28When the engagement was over and they were returning again with joy, they recognised Nicanor lying dead in full armour.

29Then there was shouting and noise, and they blessed the Sovereign Lord in the language of their ancestors.

30He who in all things was in body and soul the foremost champion of his fellow-citizens, he who kept through life the good will of his youth towards his countrymen, ordered that Nicanor’s head be cut off with his hand and arm, and that they be brought to Jerusalem.

31When he had arrived there and had called his countrymen together and set the priests before the altar, he sent for those who were in the citadel.

32Showing the head of the vile Nicanor and the hand of that profane man, which with proud brags he had stretched out against the holy house of the Almighty,

33and cutting out the tongue of the impious Nicanor, he said that he would give it in pieces to the birds, and hang up these rewards of his folly near the sanctuary.

34They all, looking up to heaven, blessed the Lord who had manifested himself, saying, “Blessed is he who has preserved his own place undefiled!”

35He hung Nicanor’s head and shoulder from the citadel, a clear sign evident to all of the help of the Lord.

36They all ordained with a common decree to in no way let this day pass undistinguished, but to mark with honour the thirteenth day of the twelfth month (it is called Adar in the Syrian language), the day before the day of Mordecai.

37This then having been the account of the attempt of Nicanor, and the city having from those times been held by the Hebrews, I also will here make an end of my book.

38If I have written well and to the point in my story, this is what I myself desired; but if its poorly done and mediocre, this is the best I could do.

39For as it isdistasteful to drink wine alone and likewise to drink water alone,while the mingling of wine with water at once gives full pleasantness to the flavour; so also the fashioning of the language delights the ears of those who read the story. Here is the end.

1Ni-ca-no biết được ông Giu-đa và các người theo ông đang có mặt trong các miền thuộc xứ Sa-ma-ri, nên quyết định tấn công họ vào ngày nghỉ, để được bảo đảm an toàn.

2Những người Do-thái bị ép buộc theo ông ta nói : “Xin ông đừng tiêu diệt họ cách tàn bạo và dã man như thế, nhưng hãy tôn vinh ngày mà chính Đấng thấu suốt mọi sự đã thánh hoá và quý trọng hơn những ngày khác.”

3Lúc ấy tên đại gian ác hỏi xem ở trên trời có vị Chúa Tể truyền phải mừng ngày sa-bát không.

4Những người Do-thái quả quyết : “Chính Đức Chúa hằng sống, Chúa Tể ngự trên trời, đã truyền phải giữ ngày thứ bảy.”

5Ông ta nói : “Chính ta, ta là chúa tể trần gian, ta truyền cho các ngươi phải cầm khí giới và lo phục vụ nhà vua.” Nhưng ông ta đã không thực hiện được ý định đen tối của mình.

6Trong khi Ni-ca-no huênh hoang tự cao tự đại, quyết định lấy những chiến lợi phẩm tịch thu được của ông Giu-đa và những người theo ông mà dựng lên một đài chiến thắng công cộng,

7thì ông Ma-ca-bê vẫn một lòng tin tưởng và cậy trông vào ơn phù trợ của Đức Chúa.

8Ông khuyên các người theo ông đừng sợ dân ngoại tấn công, nhưng hãy nhớ lại những ơn phù trợ xưa kia Trời đã ban cho họ, và bây giờ hãy trông chờ chiến thắng mà Đấng Toàn Năng sắp ban cho họ.

9Ông dùng Sách Luật và các ngôn sứ mà khích lệ họ, lại còn nhắc cho họ nhớ đến các trận đánh họ đã thắng ; ông làm cho họ bừng bừng nhiệt khí.

10Sau khi làm cho họ phấn khởi, ông còn khích lệ họ nhiều hơn nữa bằng cách tỏ cho họ thấy dân ngoại đã bất trung và bội ước.

11Ông vũ trang cho mỗi người theo ông được an toàn, không phải bằng khiên thuẫn, giáo mác cho bằng những lời khuyến khích cao thượng. Ngoài ra, ông còn thuật lại cho họ nghe một giấc mơ đáng tin, giống như một thị kiến, làm cho họ phấn khởi vui mừng.

12Đây là cảnh tượng ông thấy : ông Ô-ni-a, nguyên là thượng tế, một người lương thiện tốt lành đã xử sự nhã nhặn, đối đãi hiền từ, nói năng lịch sự và đã thực hành các nhân đức ngay từ buổi thiếu thời. Lúc ấy, ông dang tay cầu nguyện cho toàn thể cộng đồng Do-thái.

13Rồi một người khác xuất hiện, cũng làm như ông Ô-ni-a. Người này nổi bật nhờ mái tóc bạc và phẩm cách của mình, lại toả ra chung quanh một vẻ oai phong lẫm liệt khác thường.

14Ông Ô-ni-a lên tiếng nói : “Đây là Giê-rê-mi-a, ngôn sứ của Thiên Chúa. Ông hằng yêu mến anh em đồng bào mình, cầu nguyện nhiều cho toàn dân và tất cả Thành Thánh.”

15Rồi ông Giê-rê-mi-a đưa tay phải ra trao cho ông Giu-đa thanh gươm bằng vàng. Khi trao gươm, ông nói thế này :

16“Hãy nhận lấy thanh gươm thánh này. Đó là món quà Thiên Chúa ban. Nhờ nó, ngươi sẽ đánh tan quân địch.”

17Được lời khích lệ của ông Giu-đa, những lời lẽ thật quý hoá, có sức khơi dậy lòng can đảm và mang lại khí phách nam nhi cho thanh niên, người Do-thái quyết định không còn giữ thế thủ trong trại nữa, nhưng can đảm tấn công và đem chí khí nam nhi bám sát quân địch để giải quyết chiến cuộc, bởi vì Thành Thánh, tôn giáo và Đền Thờ đang gặp cơn nguy khốn.

18Quả thật, đối với họ, lo lắng cho vợ con, anh em và thân thích chỉ là phụ thuộc ; còn nỗi lo sợ lớn hơn cả và chính yếu hơn cả là cho Đền Thờ đã được thánh hiến.

19Những người còn ở lại trong thành cũng lo sợ không kém ; họ lo lắng vì cuộc giao tranh ngoài chiến địa.

20Mọi người chờ đợi giờ quyết định sắp đến, trong lúc địch quân tập trung lực lượng, bày binh bố trận, đưa đàn voi trận tới vị trí xung yếu, và dàn kỵ binh ra hai cánh.

21Khi ông Ma-ca-bê nhìn thấy đông đảo quân địch xuất hiện, trang bị đủ loại vũ khí và đàn voi trận hung hãn, ông dang tay lên trời, khẩn cầu Đức Chúa là Đấng làm nên những công trình kỳ diệu, vì ông biết rằng chiến thắng không phải là nhờ vũ khí, nhưng là do Người quyết định ban cho những ai xứng đáng.

22Trong khi khẩn cầu, ông nói như thế này : “Lạy Chúa Tể, dưới triều Khít-ki-gia vua nước Giu-đê, Ngài đã sai sứ thần của Ngài đến tiêu diệt một trăm tám mươi lăm ngàn quân của Xan-khê-ríp.

23Vậy giờ đây, lạy Chúa Tể ngự trên trời, xin kịp thời phái sứ thần đến đi trước chúng tôi, gieo sợ hãi và kinh hoàng cho địch quân.

24Xin Ngài vung cánh tay mạnh mẽ trừng phạt những kẻ nói lộng ngôn phạm thượng dám tấn công dân thánh của ngài.” Rồi ông kết thúc bằng những lời ấy.

25Quân của Ni-ca-no tiến lên theo tiếng kèn và bài ca lâm trận.

26Còn ông Giu-đa và những người theo ông thì giao chiến với quân địch giữa những lời kêu van cầu khẩn.

27Tay chiến đấu mà lòng cầu khẩn Thiên Chúa, họ giết ít nhất cũng được ba mươi lăm ngàn tên địch. Họ rất đỗi vui mừng vì Thiên Chúa đã biểu lộ quyền năng của Người.

28Diệt quân thù xong, họ vui sướng trở về vì biết rằng Ni-ca-no đã ngã gục, mình còn mang đầy binh giáp.

29Giữa tiếng hò la inh ỏi, họ dùng tiếng của cha ông mà chúc tụng Chúa Tể.

30Rồi ông Giu-đa, người luôn luôn chiến đấu ở hàng đầu, người đã cống hiến cả cuộc đời mình cho đồng bào và vẫn giữ mối thân tình đối với dân tộc ngay từ thời niên thiếu, đã ra lệnh chặt đầu, chặt tay đến tận bả vai của Ni-ca-no đem về Giê-ru-sa-lem.

31Đến nơi, ông triệu tập người đồng chủng, đặt các tư tế đứng trước bàn thờ dâng lễ toàn thiêu và cho gọi quân canh ở Thành Luỹ đến.

32Ông giương cao thủ cấp của Ni-ca-no gian ác cho họ thấy, và cả bàn tay của tên lộng ngôn phạm thượng ấy, kẻ đã dám ngạo mạn giơ tay chống lại Đền Thánh của Đấng Toàn Năng.

33Cắt lưỡi của tên Ni-ca-no khốn kiếp đó rồi, ông hạ lệnh thái ra từng mảnh ném cho chim trời ăn, và truyền bêu trước Đền Thờ cánh tay là giá ông ta phải trả cho sự điên rồ của mình.

34Lúc ấy mọi người hướng lên trời chúc tụng Đức Chúa hiển linh ; họ nói : “Chúc tụng Đấng đã gìn giữ Nơi Thánh của Người khỏi bị ô uế.”

35Ông Giu-đa cũng bêu thủ cấp của Ni-ca-no ở Thành Luỹ, để cho mọi người thấy dấu hiệu tỏ tường và hiển nhiên về ơn phù trợ của Đức Chúa.

36Mọi người bỏ thăm, cùng nhau đi đến quyết định là đừng để ngày ấy trôi qua mà không ghi nhớ gì cả, nhưng phải mừng vào ngày mười ba tháng mười hai, tức là tháng A-đa theo tiếng Xy-ri, ngày áp của ngày Moóc-đo-khai.

37Các sự kiện liên quan đến Ni-ca-no đã xảy ra như vậy. Kể từ thời kỳ ấy, người Híp-ri hoàn toàn làm chủ thành Giê-ru-sa-lem. Tôi cũng xin kết thúc tác phẩm ở đây.

38Nếu công việc soạn thảo được xuôi xắn và thành công, thì đó là điều tôi mong ước. Còn nếu tác phẩm kém giá trị và tầm thường, thì đó cũng là tất cả điều tôi có thể làm.

39Cũng như chỉ uống nguyên rượu hoặc nguyên nước thì không tốt, nhưng uống rượu có pha nước thì mới ngon lành và thú vị ; cũng vậy nếu trình thuật được xếp đặt gọn gàng và hấp dẫn thì làm sướng tai người đọc truyện. Vậy tôi xin chấm dứt ở đây.
