1The LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

2“Avenge the children of Israel on the Midianites. Afterward you shall be gathered to your people.”

3Moses spoke to the people, saying, “Arm men from among you for war, that they may go against Midian, to execute the LORD’s vengeance on Midian.

4You shall send one thousand out of every tribe, throughout all the tribes of Israel, to the war.”

5So there were delivered, out of the thousands of Israel, a thousand from every tribe, twelve thousand armed for war.

6Moses sent them, one thousand of every tribe, to the war with Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, to the war, with the vessels of the sanctuary and the trumpets for the alarm in his hand.

7They fought against Midian, as the LORD commanded Moses. They killed every male.

8They killed the kings of Midian with the rest of their slain: Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba, the five kings of Midian. They also killed Balaam the son of Beor with the sword.

9The children of Israel took the women of Midian captive with their little ones; and all their livestock, all their flocks, and all their goods, they took as plunder.

10All their cities in the places in which they lived, and all their encampments, they burned with fire.

11They took all the captives, and all the plunder, both of man and of animal.

12They brought the captives with the prey and the plunder, to Moses, and to Eleazar the priest, and to the congregation of the children of Israel, to the camp at the plains of Moab, which are by the Jordan at Jericho.

13Moses and Eleazar the priest, with all the princes of the congregation, went out to meet them outside of the camp.

14Moses was angry with the officers of the army, the captains of thousands and the captains of hundreds, who came from the service of the war.

15Moses said to them, “Have you saved all the women alive?

16Behold, these caused the children of Israel, through the counsel of Balaam, to commit trespass against the LORD in the matter of Peor, and so the plague was among the congregation of the LORD.

17Now therefore kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman who has known man by lying with him.

18But all the girls, who have not known man by lying with him, keep alive for yourselves.

19“Encamp outside of the camp for seven days. Whoever has killed any person, and whoever has touched any slain, purify yourselves on the third day and on the seventh day, you and your captives.

20You shall purify every garment, and all that is made of skin, and all work of goats’ hair, and all things made of wood.”

21Eleazar the priest said to the men of war who went to the battle, “This is the statute of the law which the LORD has commanded Moses.

22However the gold, and the silver, the bronze, the iron, the tin, and the lead,

23everything that may withstand the fire, you shall make to go through the fire, and it shall be clean; nevertheless it shall be purified with the water for impurity. All that doesn’t withstand the fire you shall make to go through the water.

24You shall wash your clothes on the seventh day, and you shall be clean. Afterward you shall come into the camp.”

25The LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

26“Count the plunder that was taken, both of man and of animal, you, and Eleazar the priest, and the heads of the fathers’ households of the congregation;

27and divide the plunder into two parts: between the men skilled in war, who went out to battle, and all the congregation.

28Levy a tribute to the LORD of the men of war who went out to battle: one soul of five hundred; of the persons, of the cattle, of the donkeys, and of the flocks.

29Take it from their half, and give it to Eleazar the priest, for the LORD’s wave offering.

30Of the children of Israel’s half, you shall take one drawn out of every fifty, of the persons, of the cattle, of the donkeys, and of the flocks, of all the livestock, and give them to the Levites, who perform the duty of the LORD’s tabernacle.”

31Moses and Eleazar the priest did as the LORD commanded Moses.

32Now the plunder, over and above the booty which the men of war took, was six hundred seventy-five thousand sheep,

33seventy-two thousand head of cattle,

34sixty-one thousand donkeys,

35and thirty-two thousand persons in all, of the women who had not known man by lying with him.

36The half, which was the portion of those who went out to war, was in number three hundred thirty-seven thousand five hundred sheep;

37and the LORD’s tribute of the sheep was six hundred seventy-five.

38The cattle were thirty-six thousand, of which the LORD’s tribute was seventy-two.

39The donkeys were thirty thousand five hundred, of which the LORD’s tribute was sixty-one.

40The persons were sixteen thousand, of whom the LORD’s tribute was thirty-two persons.

41Moses gave the tribute, which was the LORD’s wave offering, to Eleazar the priest, as the LORD commanded Moses.

42Of the children of Israel’s half, which Moses divided off from the men who fought

43(now the congregation’s half was three hundred thirty-seven thousand five hundred sheep,

44thirty-six thousand head of cattle,

45thirty thousand five hundred donkeys,

46and sixteen thousand persons),

47even of the children of Israel’s half, Moses took one drawn out of every fifty, both of man and of animal, and gave them to the Levites, who performed the duty of the LORD’s tabernacle, as the LORD commanded Moses.

48The officers who were over the thousands of the army, the captains of thousands, and the captains of hundreds, came near to Moses.

49They said to Moses, “Your servants have taken the sum of the men of war who are under our command, and there lacks not one man of us.

50We have brought the LORD’s offering, what every man found: gold ornaments, armlets, bracelets, signet rings, earrings, and necklaces, to make atonement for our souls before the LORD.”

51Moses and Eleazar the priest took their gold, even all worked jewels.

52All the gold of the wave offering that they offered up to the LORD, of the captains of thousands, and of the captains of hundreds, was sixteen thousand seven hundred fifty shekels.

53The men of war had taken booty, every man for himself.

54Moses and Eleazar the priest took the gold of the captains of thousands and of hundreds, and brought it into the Tent of Meeting for a memorial for the children of Israel before the LORD.

1ĐỨC CHÚA phán với ông Mô-sê :

2“Hãy trả thù người Ma-đi-an cho con cái Ít-ra-en, rồi ngươi sẽ về sum họp với gia tiên ngươi.”

3Ông Mô-sê nói với dân : “Một số người trong anh em hãy chuẩn bị sẵn sàng để ra trận tiến đánh Ma-đi-an, để trả thù dân ấy cho ĐỨC CHÚA.

4Anh em sẽ sai người ra trận ; cứ mỗi chi tộc trong các chi tộc Ít-ra-en, thì lấy một ngàn người.”

5Trong số ngàn vạn người Ít-ra-en, người ta tuyển mộ mỗi chi tộc một ngàn người, tức là mười hai ngàn người được chuẩn bị sẵn sàng để ra trận.

6Ông Mô-sê sai họ ra trận, mỗi chi tộc một ngàn người ; cùng ra trận với họ, có ông Pin-khát, con của tư tế E-la-da, tay cầm các đồ thánh và kèn thúc quân.

7Họ đã ra trận, tiến đánh Ma-đi-an, như ĐỨC CHÚA đã truyền cho ông Mô-sê, và họ giết tất cả đàn ông con trai.

8Ngoài những người đã bị sát hại đó, họ còn giết các vua Ma-đi-an : E-vi, Re-kem, Xua, Khua, Re-va, là năm vua Ma-đi-an ; rồi họ dùng gươm giết ông Bi-lơ-am, con ông Bơ-o.

9Con cái Ít-ra-en bắt phụ nữ Ma-đi-an và con cái chúng làm tù nhân ; họ đã lấy mọi thú vật, mọi súc vật và mọi của cải chúng làm chiến lợi phẩm.

10Họ nổi lửa đốt tất cả các thành dân đó ở và mọi lều trại của chúng.

11Sau đó họ lấy mọi chiến lợi phẩm và tất cả những gì họ chiếm được, cả người lẫn thú vật,

12rồi đem các tù nhân và những gì đã chiếm được cũng như chiến lợi phẩm về trại, về vùng thảo nguyên Mô-áp gần sông Gio-đan, đối diện với Giê-ri-khô, để nộp cho ông Mô-sê, cho tư tế E-la-da và cộng đồng con cái Ít-ra-en.

13Ông Mô-sê, tư tế E-la-da và mọi thủ lãnh của cộng đồng ra gặp họ ở ngoài trại.

14Ông Mô-sê nổi giận với các tướng lãnh, với các vị chỉ huy một ngàn quân và các vị chỉ huy một trăm quân đi trận trở về.

15Ông Mô-sê nói với họ : “Sao anh em lại để cho cả bọn đàn bà này sống ?

16Chính bọn chúng đã nghe lời Bi-lơ-am, mà lôi cuốn con cái Ít-ra-en phạm tội bất trung với ĐỨC CHÚA trong vụ Pơ-o, nên tai hoạ đã giáng xuống cộng đồng của ĐỨC CHÚA.

17Vậy bây giờ, hãy giết hết các con trai, cũng như mọi phụ nữ đã biết đến việc vợ chồng, đã ăn ở với đàn ông.

18Còn mọi con gái nhỏ tuổi chưa ăn ở với đàn ông, thì hãy để cho chúng sống và thuộc về anh em.

19Về phần anh em, ai đã giết người, ai đã đụng tới người bị sát hại, hãy đóng quân ngoài trại trong bảy ngày. Anh em cũng như các tù nhân đều phải thanh tẩy mình vào ngày thứ ba và thứ bảy.

20Anh em phải thanh tẩy mọi quần áo, mọi đồ bằng da, mọi sản phẩm bằng lông dê và mọi đồ gỗ.”

21Tư tế E-la-da nói với các binh lính đã đi chiến đấu : “Đây là quy tắc pháp luật ĐỨC CHÚA đã truyền cho ông Mô-sê :

22Chỉ có vàng, bạc, đồng, sắt, thiếc, chì,

23nghĩa là tất cả những gì chịu được lửa, anh em mới phải cho qua lửa để các vật ấy được sạch ; tuy nhiên, các vật ấy phải được thanh tẩy bằng nước tẩy uế. Tất cả những gì không chịu được lửa, thì anh em phải nhúng vào nước.

24Anh em phải giặt quần áo ngày thứ bảy và anh em sẽ được sạch, rồi sau đó mới trở vào trại.”

25ĐỨC CHÚA phán với ông Mô-sê :

26“Cùng với tư tế E-la-da và các gia trưởng trong cộng đồng, ngươi hãy làm sổ kê khai những gì đã lấy được, đã bắt được, người cũng như súc vật.

27Rồi ngươi hãy chia những gì đã lấy được : một nửa cho các chiến sĩ đã ra trận và một nửa cho toàn thể cộng đồng.

28Sau đó, từ phần dành cho các chiến sĩ đã ra trận, ngươi sẽ trích ra một phần năm trăm số người, bò bê, lừa và chiên cừu, để làm thuế nộp cho ĐỨC CHÚA.

29Anh em sẽ lấy phần đó trong phần dành cho các chiến sĩ mà trao cho tư tế E-la-da, làm phần trích dâng ĐỨC CHÚA.

30Còn trong phần dành cho con cái Ít-ra-en, ngươi sẽ chọn lấy một phần năm mươi số người, bò bê, lừa, chiên dê, mọi thú vật, rồi trao cho các thầy Lê-vi có nhiệm vụ canh giữ Nhà Tạm của ĐỨC CHÚA.”

31Ông Mô-sê và tư tế E-la-da làm như ĐỨC CHÚA đã truyền cho ông Mô-sê.

32Những của đoạt được, những phần còn lại của chiến lợi phẩm mà các người tham chiến đã chiếm lấy, là 675.000 chiên dê,

3372.000 bò bê,

3461.000 con lừa,

35và nhân mạng, tức là những phụ nữ chưa ăn ở với đàn ông, tất cả là 32.000 người.

36Một nửa phần chiến lợi phẩm chia cho các người đã ra trận là : 337.500 chiên dê,

37trong số đó, thuế nộp cho ĐỨC CHÚA là 675 con ;

3836.000 bò bê, trong số đó, thuế nộp cho ĐỨC CHÚA là 72 con ;

3930.500 con lừa, trong số đó, thuế nộp cho ĐỨC CHÚA là 61 con ;

4016.000 nhân mạng, trong số đó, thuế nộp cho ĐỨC CHÚA là 32 mạng.

41Ông Mô-sê đã trao cho tư tế E-la-da phần trích dâng ĐỨC CHÚA, như Người truyền cho ông Mô-sê.

42Còn nửa phần chiến lợi phẩm kia được chia cho con cái Ít-ra-en, ông Mô-sê đã tách ra khỏi phần chia cho các người đã ra trận ;

43nửa phần đó thuộc về cộng đồng, gồm có 337.500 chiên dê,

4436.000 bò bê,

4530.500 con lừa,

4616.000 nhân mạng.

47Trong nửa phần đã chia cho con cái Ít-ra-en, ông Mô-sê chọn lấy một phần năm mươi số người và thú vật, rồi trao cho các thầy Lê-vi có nhiệm vụ canh giữ Nhà Tạm của ĐỨC CHÚA, như Người truyền cho ông Mô-sê.

48Bấy giờ, các tướng lãnh, các vị chỉ huy một ngàn quân và các vị chỉ huy một trăm quân đến gần ông ông Mô-sê

49và nói : “Các tôi tớ ngài đã kiểm lại số những người chiến đấu dưới quyền chúng tôi, và không thấy thiếu một người nào cả.

50Vậy chúng tôi đem những đồ bằng vàng mà mỗi người đã tìm thấy, làm lễ tiến dâng lên ĐỨC CHÚA, để cử hành lễ xá tội cho chúng tôi trước nhan ĐỨC CHÚA. Những đồ bằng vàng đó là vòng cổ tay, vòng cánh tay, nhẫn, khuyên tai và kiềng.”

51Ông Mô-sê và tư tế E-la-da đã nhận vàng họ dâng và mọi đồ kim hoàn.

52Tổng cộng số vàng họ đã trích ra để dâng ĐỨC CHÚA là một trăm bảy mươi ký, được các chỉ huy một ngàn quân và các vị chỉ huy một trăm quân đem nộp.

53Trước đó, ai nấy trong quân đội đều đoạt phần chiến lợi phẩm cho mình.

54Cho nên, ông Mô-sê và tư tế E-la-da đã nhận vàng của các vị chỉ huy một ngàn quân và một trăm quân, rồi mang đến Lều Hội Ngộ, làm kỷ vật tưởng nhớ con cái Ít-ra-en trước nhan ĐỨC CHÚA.
