Ít-ra-ên Cưới Vợ cho Người Bên-gia-min

1Tại Mích-pa, người Ít-ra-ên có lời thề này: “Chúng ta sẽ không gả con gái mình cho người Bên-gia-min.”

2Khi đến Bê-tên lần này, dân chúng ngồi đó, khóc lóc thật đắng cay cho đến tối, trước sự chứng giám của Đức Chúa Trời.

3Họ than: “Lạy Chúa Hằng Hữu, Đức Chúa Trời của Ít-ra-ên! Vì đâu xui khiến cho việc này xảy ra, làm cho Ít-ra-ên thiếu mất một đại tộc?”

4Hôm sau, họ dậy sớm, xây lên một bàn thờ rồi dâng lễ thiêu và lễ vật cầu an.

5Sau đó, họ hỏi nhau: “Có đại tộc nào vắng mặt trong đại hội trước mặt Chúa Hằng Hữu tại Mích-pa không?” Vì họ đã thề rằng ai không đến dự đại hội này phải bị xử tử.

6Người Ít-ra-ên cứ ân hận, thương tiếc anh em mình, là người Bên-gia-min. Họ nhắc đi nhắc lại: “Hôm nay Ít-ra-ên mất đi một đại tộc rồi!

7Tìm đâu ra vợ cho những người Bên-gia-min sống sót, vì chúng ta đã thề trước Chúa Hằng Hữu sẽ không gả con gái cho họ?”

8Rồi họ hỏi: “Trong các đại tộc Ít-ra-ên, có ai không đến trình diện Chúa Hằng Hữu tại Mích-pa không?” Họ thấy rằng không có người nào từ Gia-be Ga-la-át có mặt trong đại hội.

9Vì sau khi kiểm tra, họ biết được, chẳng có người nào từ người Gia-be Ga-la-át đến.

10Vậy họ sai 12.000 quân tinh nhuệ đến Gia-be Ga-la-át giết mọi người tại đó, cả đàn ông, đàn bà, và trẻ con.

11Họ nói: “Đây là điều anh em phải làm: Tận diệt mọi người nam và phụ nữ đã có chồng.”

12Trong khu dân cư của Gia-be Ga-la-át, họ tìm được 400 trinh nữ, chưa bao giờ nằm với người nam nào, rồi đem tất cả dẫn về trại Si-lô, trong xứ Ca-na-an.

13Người Ít-ra-ên sai sứ giả đi giảng hòa với những người Bên-gia-min trốn ở vùng đá Rim-môn.

14Khi những người Bên-gia-min trở về, được người Ít-ra-ên cho cưới các cô gái ở Gia-be Ga-la-át làm vợ. Tuy nhiên, số người nữ không đủ cho người Bên-gia-min còn lại này.

15Vì thế, dân chúng xót thương người Bên-gia-min, vì Chúa Hằng Hữu đã làm cho một đại tộc bị khiếm khuyết trong vòng các đại tộc Ít-ra-ên.

16Các trưởng lão của đại hội lên tiếng: “Chúng ta phải làm sao tìm vợ cho số người Bên-gia-min còn lại, vì đàn bà trong đại tộc này chết hết rồi.

17Người Bên-gia-min phải truyền hậu tự; nếu không, một đại tộc của Ít-ra-ên sẽ bị diệt chủng.

18Nhưng, chúng ta không thể gả con gái mình cho họ được, vì Ít-ra-ên đã thề hễ ai gả con cho người Bên-gia-min đều phải bị nguyền rủa.”

19Họ tìm ra được một kế: Mỗi năm có ngày lễ của Chúa Hằng Hữu tại Si-lô, ở nam Lê-bô-na và phía bắc Bê-tên, dọc phía đông đường cái chạy từ Bê-tên đến Si-chem.

20Họ nói với những người Bên-gia-min đang cần vợ: “Hãy đi trốn trong các vườn nho.

21Khi thấy những cô gái Si-lô ra nhảy múa, mỗi người chạy ra bắt một cô đem về làm vợ.

22Khi cha mẹ của họ khiếu nại với chúng tôi, chúng tôi sẽ nói: Xin vì chúng tôi làm ơn cho họ. Chúng tôi đã cố gắng tìm vợ cho họ, nhưng vẫn không đủ. Trường hợp này, anh em không mắc tội gì cả, vì không tự ý đem gả con gái cho họ.”

23Vậy người Bên-gia-min làm theo những gì họ nói. Mỗi người nam bắt các cô gái nhảy múa trong ngày lễ đem làm vợ. Họ quay về quê hương mình, dựng lại các thành rồi sống ở đó.

24Người Ít-ra-ên khởi hành theo từng đại tộc và gia đình, ai nấy đều trở về nhà mình.

25Thuở ấy, Ít-ra-ên chưa có vua; nên ai nấy cứ làm theo điều mình cho là phải.

1Now the men of Israel had sworn in Mizpeh, saying, There shall not any of us give his daughter unto Benjamin to wife.

2And the people came to the house of God, and abode there till even before God, and lifted up their voices, and wept sore;

3And said, O LORD God of Israel, why is this come to pass in Israel, that there should be to day one tribe lacking in Israel?

4And it came to pass on the morrow, that the people rose early, and built there an altar, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings.

5And the children of Israel said, Who is there among all the tribes of Israel that came not up with the congregation unto the LORD? For they had made a great oath concerning him that came not up to the LORD to Mizpeh, saying, He shall surely be put to death.

6And the children of Israel repented them for Benjamin their brother, and said, There is one tribe cut off from Israel this day.

7How shall we do for wives for them that remain, seeing we have sworn by the LORD that we will not give them of our daughters to wives?

8¶ And they said, What one is there of the tribes of Israel that came not up to Mizpeh to the LORD? And, behold, there came none to the camp from Jabesh-gilead to the assembly.

9For the people were numbered, and, behold, there were none of the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead there.

10And the congregation sent thither twelve thousand men of the valiantest, and commanded them, saying, Go and smite the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead with the edge of the sword, with the women and the children.

11And this is the thing that ye shall do, Ye shall utterly destroy every male, and every woman that hath lain by man.

12And they found among the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead four hundred young virgins, that had known no man by lying with any male: and they brought them unto the camp to Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan.

13And the whole congregation sent some to speak to the children of Benjamin that were in the rock Rimmon, and to call peaceably unto them.

14And Benjamin came again at that time; and they gave them wives which they had saved alive of the women of Jabesh-gilead: and yet so they sufficed them not.

15And the people repented them for Benjamin, because that the LORD had made a breach in the tribes of Israel.

16¶ Then the elders of the congregation said, How shall we do for wives for them that remain, seeing the women are destroyed out of Benjamin?

17And they said, There must be an inheritance for them that be escaped of Benjamin, that a tribe be not destroyed out of Israel.

18Howbeit we may not give them wives of our daughters: for the children of Israel have sworn, saying, Cursed be he that giveth a wife to Benjamin.

19Then they said, Behold, there is a feast of the LORD in Shiloh yearly in a place which is on the north side of Beth-el, on the east side of the highway that goeth up from Beth-el to Shechem, and on the south of Lebonah.

20Therefore they commanded the children of Benjamin, saying, Go and lie in wait in the vineyards;

21And see, and, behold, if the daughters of Shiloh come out to dance in dances, then come ye out of the vineyards, and catch you every man his wife of the daughters of Shiloh, and go to the land of Benjamin.

22And it shall be, when their fathers or their brethren come unto us to complain, that we will say unto them, Be favourable unto them for our sakes: because we reserved not to each man his wife in the war: for ye did not give unto them at this time, that ye should be guilty.

23And the children of Benjamin did so, and took them wives, according to their number, of them that danced, whom they caught: and they went and returned unto their inheritance, and repaired the cities, and dwelt in them.

24And the children of Israel departed thence at that time, every man to his tribe and to his family, and they went out from thence every man to his inheritance.

25In those days there was no king in Israel: every man did that which was right in his own eyes.
