Thô-la Làm Phán Quan của Ít-ra-ên

1Sau khi A-bi-mê-léc chết, có Thô-la, con Phu-a, cháu Đô-đô, thuộc đại tộc Y-sa-ca, quê ở Sa-mia trên núi Ép-ra-im đã đứng ra giải cứu Ít-ra-ên.

2Ông làm phán quan Ít-ra-ên trong hai mươi ba năm. Khi qua đời, ông được chôn ở Sa-mia.

3Sau khi Thô-la chết, có Giai-rơ, người Ga-la-át, làm phán quan Ít-ra-ên trong hai mươi hai năm.

4Ông có ba mươi con trai, mỗi người có một con lừa để cưỡi và một thành để ở. Các thành này ở trong đất Ga-la-át, và cho đến ngày nay vẫn còn được gọi là Các Thành của Giai-rơ.

5Giai-rơ qua đời và được chôn ở Kha-môn.

Người Am-môn Áp Bức Người Ít-ra-ên

6Một lần nữa, người Ít-ra-ên lại phạm tội trước mặt Chúa Hằng Hữu. Họ thờ phụng tượng thần Ba-anh, Át-tạt-tê, và các thần của người A-ram, Si-đôn, Mô-áp, Am-môn, và Phi-li-tin. Không chỉ vậy, họ còn bội đạo và không phụng thờ Chúa Hằng Hữu nữa.

7Vì vậy, Chúa Hằng Hữu nổi giận, cho phép người Phi-li-tin và Am-môn ra tay áp bức Ít-ra-ên

8ngay trong năm ấy. Và suốt trong mười tám năm, người Ít-ra-ên sống bên bờ phía đông Sông Giô-đan, trong đất A-mô-rít (đất của người Ga-la-át trước kia) bị áp bức.

9Quân Am-môn còn vượt sông, sang bờ phía tây Giô-đan để tấn công Giu-đa, Bên-gia-min, và Ép-ra-im. Người Ít-ra-ên vô cùng khốn khổ.

10Bấy giờ, người Ít-ra-ên kêu cầu với Chúa Hằng Hữu: “Chúng tôi đã phạm tội với Chúa, bỏ Đức Chúa Trời để thờ tượng thần Ba-anh.”

11Chúa Hằng Hữu đáp: “Không phải Ta đã giải cứu các ngươi khỏi người Ai Cập, A-mô-rít, Am-môn, Phi-li-tin,

12Si-đôn, A-ma-léc, và Ma-ôn khi các ngươi than khóc kêu cầu Ta để giải cứu các ngươi ra khỏi tay chúng?

13Thế mà, các ngươi bỏ Ta, đi thờ các thần khác. Lần này Ta sẽ không cứu các ngươi nữa.

14Cứ đi kêu cầu thần các ngươi đã chọn! Để các thần ấy cứu các ngươi trong lúc hoạn nạn!”

15Nhưng người Ít-ra-ên cầu xin Chúa Hằng Hữu: “Chúng tôi có tội. Xin trừng phạt chúng tôi tùy theo ý Ngài, chỉ xin giải cứu chúng tôi một lần nữa.”

16Họ bắt đầu dẹp bỏ thần của các dân tộc khác và trở lại thờ Chúa Hằng Hữu. Ngài xót xa cho cảnh khốn khổ của Ít-ra-ên.

17Lúc ấy, người Am-môn tập trung quân đội, kéo đến đóng ở Ga-la-át, trong khi người Ít-ra-ên đang tập họp tại Mích-pa.

18Các nhà lãnh đạo Ít-ra-ên ở Ga-la-át bảo nhau: “Ai tình nguyện đánh người Am-môn trước sẽ được làm cai trị Ga-la-át.”

1And after Abimelech there arose to defend Israel Tola the son of Puah, the son of Dodo, a man of Issachar; and he dwelt in Shamir in mount Ephraim.

2And he judged Israel twenty and three years, and died, and was buried in Shamir.

3¶ And after him arose Jair, a Gileadite, and judged Israel twenty and two years.

4And he had thirty sons that rode on thirty ass colts, and they had thirty cities, which are called Havoth-jair unto this day, which are in the land of Gilead.

5And Jair died, and was buried in Camon.

6¶ And the children of Israel did evil again in the sight of the LORD, and served Baalim, and Ashtaroth, and the gods of Syria, and the gods of Zidon, and the gods of Moab, and the gods of the children of Ammon, and the gods of the Philistines, and forsook the LORD, and served not him.

7And the anger of the LORD was hot against Israel, and he sold them into the hands of the Philistines, and into the hands of the children of Ammon.

8And that year they vexed and oppressed the children of Israel: eighteen years, all the children of Israel that were on the other side Jordan in the land of the Amorites, which is in Gilead.

9Moreover the children of Ammon passed over Jordan to fight also against Judah, and against Benjamin, and against the house of Ephraim; so that Israel was sore distressed.

10¶ And the children of Israel cried unto the LORD, saying, We have sinned against thee, both because we have forsaken our God, and also served Baalim.

11And the LORD said unto the children of Israel, Did not I deliver you from the Egyptians, and from the Amorites, from the children of Ammon, and from the Philistines?

12The Zidonians also, and the Amalekites, and the Maonites, did oppress you; and ye cried to me, and I delivered you out of their hand.

13Yet ye have forsaken me, and served other gods: wherefore I will deliver you no more.

14Go and cry unto the gods which ye have chosen; let them deliver you in the time of your tribulation.

15¶ And the children of Israel said unto the LORD, We have sinned: do thou unto us whatsoever seemeth good unto thee; deliver us only, we pray thee, this day.

16And they put away the strange gods from among them, and served the LORD: and his soul was grieved for the misery of Israel.

17Then the children of Ammon were gathered together, and encamped in Gilead. And the children of Israel assembled themselves together, and encamped in Mizpeh.

18And the people and princes of Gilead said one to another, What man is he that will begin to fight against the children of Ammon? he shall be head over all the inhabitants of Gilead.
