1Củng cố được vương quốc và trở nên hùng mạnh rồi, vua Rơ-kháp-am bỏ Lề Luật của ĐỨC CHÚA, khiến toàn thể Ít-ra-en cũng theo gương.

2Vì họ bất trung với ĐỨC CHÚA như thế, nên năm thứ năm triều vua Rơ-kháp-am, vua Ai-cập là Si-sắc đã tiến đánh Giê-ru-sa-lem.

3Từ Ai-cập, ông kéo theo một ngàn hai trăm chiến xa, sáu mươi ngàn ngựa và một đạo quân đông vô kể gồm những người Li-by-a, Xúc-ki-gim và Cút,

4chiếm các thành có đồn luỹ kiên cố và tiến về Giê-ru-sa-lem.

5Bấy giờ ngôn sứ Sơ-ma-gia vào gặp vua Rơ-kháp-am và các thủ lãnh của Giu-đa đang tập họp về Giê-ru-sa-lem để trốn tránh vua Si-sắc. Ngôn sứ nói với họ : “ĐỨC CHÚA phán thế này : ‘Các ngươi đã bỏ Ta, thì Ta, Ta cũng bỏ mặc các ngươi trong tay Si-sắc.’”

6Các thủ lãnh Ít-ra-en liền cùng với vua hạ mình xuống và tuyên xưng rằng : “ĐỨC CHÚA thật công minh !”

7Khi ĐỨC CHÚA thấy họ hạ mình xuống, thì Người phán bảo ông Sơ-ma-gia rằng : “Chúng đã hạ mình xuống, Ta sẽ không tiêu diệt chúng nữa. Ta sẽ sớm cho chúng thoát nạn. Cơn thịnh nộ của Ta sẽ không giáng xuống Giê-ru-sa-lem qua tay Si-sắc.

8Thế nhưng chúng sẽ phải làm tôi nó, và chúng sẽ biết thế nào là phụng sự Ta và thế nào là làm tôi chư quốc.”

9Vậy Si-sắc vua Ai-cập tiến đánh Giê-ru-sa-lem và chiếm đoạt các kho tàng trong Đền Thờ ĐỨC CHÚA cũng như kho tàng trong hoàng cung ; ông lấy hết. Ông chiếm đoạt những khiên thuẫn bằng vàng vua Sa-lô-môn đã làm.

10Vua Rơ-kháp-am làm những khiên thuẫn bằng đồng để thay thế, và giao cho các người chỉ huy thị vệ canh gác cửa hoàng cung.

11Mỗi khi vua vào Đền Thờ ĐỨC CHÚA thì các thị vệ mang ra, rồi lại đưa về phòng thị vệ.

12Vì vua hạ mình xuống nên đã tránh được cơn thịnh nộ của ĐỨC CHÚA và không bị hoàn toàn tiêu diệt. Vả lại ở Giu-đa vẫn còn có những điều tốt lành.

13Thân mẫu vua là bà Na-a-ma người Am-mon.

14Vua đã làm sự dữ, vì đã không để lòng tìm kiếm ĐỨC CHÚA.

15Các sự việc đời vua Rơ-kháp-am, từ những việc đầu tiên đến những việc cuối cùng, đã chẳng được ghi chép trong Sử biên niên của ngôn sứ Sơ-ma-gia và của thầy chiêm Ít-đô sao ? Các cuộc giao tranh đã không ngừng xảy ra giữa vua Rơ-kháp-am và vua Gia-róp-am.

16Vua Rơ-kháp-am an nghỉ với tổ tiên và được chôn cất trong Thành Đa-vít. Con vua là A-vi-gia lên ngôi kế vị.

1And when the kingdom of Roboam was strengthened and fortified, he forsook the law of the Lord, and all Israel with him.

2And in the fifth year of the reign of Roboam, Sesac king of Egypt came up against Jerusalem (because they had sinned against the Lord)

3With twelve hundred chariots and threescore thousand horsemen: and the people were without number that came with him out of Egypt, to wit, Libyans, and Troglodites, and Ethiopians.

4And he took the strongest cities in Juda, and came to Jerusalem.

5And Semeias the prophet came to Roboam, and to the princes of Juda, that were gathered together in Jerusalem, fleeing from Sesac, and he said to them: Thus saith the Lord: You have left me, and I have left you in the hand of Sesac.

6And the princes of Israel, and the king, being in a consternation, said: The Lord is just.

7And when the Lord saw that they were humbled, the word of the Lord came to Semeias, saying: Because they are humbled, I will not destroy them, and I will give them a little help, and my wrath shall not fall upon Jerusalem by the hand of Sesac.

8But yet they shall serve him, that they may know the difference between my service, and the service of a kingdom of the earth.

9So Sesac king of Egypt departed from Jerusalem, taking away the treasures of the house of the Lord, and of the king’s house, and he took all with him, and the golden shields that Solomon had made,

10Instead of which the king made brazen ones, and delivered them to the captains of the shieldbearers, who guarded the entrance of the palace.

11And when the king entered into the house of the Lord, the shieldbearers came and took them, and brought them back again to their armoury.

12But yet because they were humbled, the wrath of the Lord turned away from them, and they were not utterly destroyed: for even in Juda there were found good works.

13King Roboam therefore was strengthened in Jerusalem, and reigned: he was one and forty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned seventeen years in Jerusalem, the city which the Lord chose out of all the tribes of Israel, to establish his name there: and the name of his mother was Naama an Ammonitess.

14But he did evil, and did not prepare his heart to seek the Lord.

15Now the acts of Roboam first and last are written in the books of Semeias the prophet, and of Addo the seer, and diligently recorded: and there was war between Roboam and Jeroboam all their days.

16And Roboam slept with his fathers, and was buried in the city of David. And Abia his son reigned in his stead.
