1And it came to pass, that after we were gotten from them, and had launched, we came with a straight course unto Coos, and the day following unto Rhodes, and from thence unto Patara:

2And finding a ship sailing over unto Phenicia, we went aboard, and set forth.

3Now when we had discovered Cyprus, we left it on the left hand, and sailed into Syria, and landed at Tyre: for there the ship was to unlade her burden.

4And finding disciples, we tarried there seven days: who said to Paul through the Spirit, that he should not go up to Jerusalem.

5And when we had accomplished those days, we departed and went our way; and they all brought us on our way, with wives and children, till we were out of the city: and we kneeled down on the shore, and prayed.

6And when we had taken our leave one of another, we took ship; and they returned home again.

7And when we had finished our course from Tyre, we came to Ptolemais, and saluted the brethren, and abode with them one day.

8And the next day we that were of Paul’s company departed, and came unto Cæsarea: and we entered into the house of Philip the evangelist, which was one of the seven; and abode with him.

9And the same man had four daughters, virgins, which did prophesy.

10And as we tarried there many days, there came down from Judæa a certain prophet, named Agabus.

11And when he was come unto us, he took Paul’s girdle, and bound his own hands and feet, and said, Thus saith the Holy Ghost, So shall the Jews at Jerusalem bind the man that owneth this girdle, and shall deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles.

12And when we heard these things, both we, and they of that place, besought him not to go up to Jerusalem.

13Then Paul answered, What mean ye to weep and to break mine heart? for I am ready not to be bound only, but also to die at Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus.

14And when he would not be persuaded, we ceased, saying, The will of the Lord be done.

15And after those days we took up our carriages, and went up to Jerusalem.

16There went with us also certain of the disciples of Cæsarea, and brought with them one Mnason of Cyprus, an old disciple, with whom we should lodge.

17And when we were come to Jerusalem, the brethren received us gladly.

18And the day following Paul went in with us unto James; and all the elders were present.

19And when he had saluted them, he declared particularly what things God had wrought among the Gentiles by his ministry.

20And when they heard it, they glorified the Lord, and said unto him, Thou seest, brother, how many thousands of Jews there are which believe; and they are all zealous of the law:

21And they are informed of thee, that thou teachest all the Jews which are among the Gentiles to forsake Moses, saying that they ought not to circumcise their children, neither to walk after the customs.

22What is it therefore? the multitude must needs come together: for they will hear that thou art come.

23Do therefore this that we say to thee: We have four men which have a vow on them;

24Them take, and purify thyself with them, and be at charges with them, that they may shave their heads: and all may know that those things, whereof they were informed concerning thee, are nothing; but that thou thyself also walkest orderly, and keepest the law.

25As touching the Gentiles which believe, we have written and concluded that they observe no such thing, save only that they keep themselves from things offered to idols, and from blood, and from strangled, and from fornication.

26Then Paul took the men, and the next day purifying himself with them entered into the temple, to signify the accomplishment of the days of purification, until that an offering should be offered for every one of them.

27And when the seven days were almost ended, the Jews which were of Asia, when they saw him in the temple, stirred up all the people, and laid hands on him,

28Crying out, Men of Israel, help: This is the man, that teacheth all men every where against the people, and the law, and this place: and further brought Greeks also into the temple, and hath polluted this holy place.

29(For they had seen before with him in the city Trophimus an Ephesian, whom they supposed that Paul had brought into the temple.)

30And all the city was moved, and the people ran together: and they took Paul, and drew him out of the temple: and forthwith the doors were shut.

31And as they went about to kill him, tidings came unto the chief captain of the band, that all Jerusalem was in an uproar.

32Who immediately took soldiers and centurions, and ran down unto them: and when they saw the chief captain and the soldiers, they left beating of Paul.

33Then the chief captain came near, and took him, and commanded him to be bound with two chains; and demanded who he was, and what he had done.

34And some cried one thing, some another, among the multitude: and when he could not know the certainty for the tumult, he commanded him to be carried into the castle.

35And when he came upon the stairs, so it was, that he was borne of the soldiers for the violence of the people.

36For the multitude of the people followed after, crying, Away with him.

37And as Paul was to be led into the castle, he said unto the chief captain, May I speak unto thee? Who said, Canst thou speak Greek?

38Art not thou that Egyptian, which before these days madest an uproar, and leddest out into the wilderness four thousand men that were murderers?

39But Paul said, I am a man which am a Jew of Tarsus, a city in Cilicia, a citizen of no mean city: and, I beseech thee, suffer me to speak unto the people.

40And when he had given him licence, Paul stood on the stairs, and beckoned with the hand unto the people. And when there was made a great silence, he spake unto them in the Hebrew tongue, saying,

1Đến khi dứt ra được mà xuống tàu, chúng tôi đi thẳng đến đảo Cô, ngày hôm sau đến đảo Rô-đô, rồi từ đó đến Pa-ta-ra.

2Gặp chuyến đi Phê-ni-xi, chúng tôi xuống tàu và ra khơi.

3Khi trông thấy đảo Sýp, chúng tôi đi vòng phía nam mà hướng về Xy-ri, và cập bến tại Tia, vì tàu phải đổ hàng ở đó.

4Tìm gặp được các môn đệ, chúng tôi ở lại đó bảy ngày. Được Thần Khí soi sáng, họ nói với ông Phao-lô đừng lên Giê-ru-sa-lem.

5Nhưng khi hết thời gian ở đó, chúng tôi ra đi và lên đường, có tất cả các môn đệ cùng với vợ con họ tiễn chân đến tận ngoại thành. Chúng tôi quỳ xuống trên bãi biển mà cầu nguyện.

6Sau khi từ biệt nhau, chúng tôi xuống tàu, còn họ thì trở về nhà.

7Phần chúng tôi, để kết thúc chuyến vượt biển này, chúng tôi đi từ Tia đến Pơ-tô-lê-mai ; chúng tôi chào thăm các anh em ở đó và ở lại với họ một ngày.

8Hôm sau chúng tôi lên đường và đến Xê-da-rê. Chúng tôi vào nhà ông Phi-líp-phê, người loan báo Tin Mừng, thuộc nhóm Bảy người, và ở lại với ông.

9Ông này có bốn người con gái đồng trinh được ơn nói tiên tri.

10Đang khi chúng tôi ở lại đó nhiều ngày, có một ngôn sứ tên là A-ga-bô từ miền Giu-đê xuống.

11Ông đến thăm chúng tôi và lấy dây lưng của ông Phao-lô tự trói chân tay lại và nói : “Đây là điều Thánh Thần phán : người có dây lưng này sẽ bị người Do-thái trói lại như thế ở Giê-ru-sa-lem mà nộp vào tay người ngoại.”

12Nghe vậy, chúng tôi và các người địa phương nài xin ông Phao-lô đừng lên Giê-ru-sa-lem.

13Bấy giờ ông Phao-lô trả lời : “Có gì mà anh em phải khóc và làm tan nát trái tim tôi ? Phần tôi, tôi sẵn sàng không những để cho người ta trói, mà còn chịu chết tại Giê-ru-sa-lem vì danh Chúa Giê-su.”

14Không thể thuyết phục được ông, chúng tôi đành thôi và nói : “Xin cho ý Chúa được thể hiện !”

15Sau mấy ngày đó, khi đã chuẩn bị xong, chúng tôi lên Giê-ru-sa-lem.

16Có những môn đệ từ Xê-da-rê cùng đi với chúng tôi ; họ dẫn chúng tôi đến trọ nhà ông Mơ-na-xon người Sýp, một môn đệ kỳ cựu.

17Khi chúng tôi đến Giê-ru-sa-lem, các anh em niềm nở đón tiếp chúng tôi.

18Hôm sau, ông Phao-lô cùng đi với chúng tôi đến nhà ông Gia-cô-bê, ở đó có đông đủ các kỳ mục đang họp.

19Sau khi chào hỏi, ông Phao-lô kể lại từng chi tiết những gì Thiên Chúa đã dùng việc phục vụ của ông mà làm nơi các dân ngoại.

20Nghe nói thế, họ tôn vinh Thiên Chúa, rồi nói với ông Phao-lô : “Thưa anh, anh thấy có hàng vạn người Do-thái đã tin theo, và tất cả đều nhiệt thành đối với Luật Mô-sê.

21Thế mà họ đã nghe nói về anh rằng : anh dạy tất cả những người Do-thái sống giữa các dân ngoại phải bỏ ông Mô-sê, anh bảo họ đừng làm phép cắt bì cho con cái, và đừng giữ các tục lệ nữa.

22Vậy phải làm gì ? Thế nào người ta cũng sẽ nghe biết là anh đã tới.

23Vậy xin anh làm như chúng tôi nói với anh đây : chúng tôi có bốn người đang phải giữ lời khấn ;

24anh hãy đem họ theo mà cùng làm nghi lễ tẩy uế với họ, và đài thọ chi phí cho họ để họ có thể xuống tóc. Như vậy ai nấy sẽ biết rằng những điều họ đã nghe nói về anh chỉ là chuyện không đâu ; trái lại, chính anh cũng ăn ở như người tuân giữ Lề Luật.

25Còn về những người ngoại đã tin theo, thì chúng tôi đã viết thư thông báo những quyết định của chúng tôi, là họ phải kiêng : ăn đồ cúng cho ngẫu tượng, ăn tiết, ăn thịt loài vật không cắt tiết, và tránh gian dâm.”

26Bấy giờ ông Phao-lô đem bốn người kia theo, và ngày hôm sau ông cùng làm nghi lễ tẩy uế với họ. Rồi ông vào Đền Thờ và loan báo ngày kết thúc thời gian tẩy uế, là ngày phải dâng lễ vật cầu cho mỗi người trong nhóm họ.

27Khi sắp hết thời gian bảy ngày, những người Do-thái từ A-xi-a đến thấy ông trong Đền Thờ thì sách động toàn thể đám đông và tra tay bắt ông.

28Họ tri hô : “Hỡi đồng bào Ít-ra-en, giúp một tay nào ! Nó kia kìa, tên vẫn đi mọi nơi dạy cho mọi người những điều phản dân, phạm đến Lề Luật và Nơi Thánh này ! Nó còn đem cả mấy người Hy-lạp vào Đền Thờ mà làm cho Nơi Thánh này ra ô uế.”

29Họ nói thế là vì trước đó họ đã thấy ông Trô-phi-mô, người Ê-phê-xô, cùng đi với ông Phao-lô trong thành, và họ nghĩ ông Phao-lô đã đưa ông ấy vào Đền Thờ.

30Cả thành phố sôi động và dân đổ xô đến. Họ túm lấy ông Phao-lô, lôi ra khỏi Đền Thờ ; lập tức người ta đóng các cửa Đền Thờ lại.

31Họ còn đang tìm cách giết ông, thì có tin báo lên cho vị chỉ huy cơ đội : “Cả Giê-ru-sa-lem náo động !”

32Lập tức, ông ta huy động một số binh sĩ và đại đội trưởng, và xông vào đám đông. Vừa thấy vị chỉ huy và binh sĩ, thì họ thôi không đánh ông Phao-lô nữa.

33Bấy giờ vị chỉ huy lại gần, bắt ông và ra lệnh lấy hai cái xiềng còng ông lại, rồi hỏi cho biết ông là ai và đã làm gì.

34Đám đông la hét, kẻ thế này, người thế nọ. Vì quá ồn ào, vị chỉ huy không thể biết được điều gì chắc chắn, nên mới ra lệnh đem ông Phao-lô về đồn.

35Khi đến bậc thềm, binh sĩ phải khiêng ông đi, vì đám đông quá hung bạo.

36Dân cứ theo sau cả đám mà hò la : “Giết nó đi !”

37Khi sắp bị đem vào đồn, ông Phao-lô nói với vị chỉ huy : “Tôi có được phép nói với ông một lời chăng ?” Ông này đáp : “Ông biết tiếng Hy-lạp à ?

38Vậy ra ông không phải là tên Ai-cập, trước đây ít lâu, đã xúi bốn ngàn tên khủng bố nổi loạn và dẫn chúng vào sa mạc hay sao ?”

39Ông Phao-lô nói : “Tôi đây là người Do-thái, quê ở Tác-xô miền Ki-li-ki-a, công dân một thành không phải là không có tiếng tăm. Xin ông cho phép tôi ngỏ lời với dân.”

40Được vị chỉ huy cho phép, ông Phao-lô đứng trên bậc thềm giơ tay làm hiệu cho dân. Mọi người im phăng phắc ; ông Phao-lô nói với họ bằng tiếng Híp-ri :
