Judges

1And Abimelech the son of Jerobaal went to Sichem to his mother’s brethren and spoke to them, and to all the kindred of his mother’s father, saying:

2Speak to all the men of Sichem: whether is better for you that seventy men all the sons of Jerobaal should rule over you, or that one man should rule over you? And withal consider that I am your bone, and your flesh.

3And his mother’s brethren spoke of him to all the men of Sichem, all these words, and they inclined their hearts after Abimelech, saying: He is our brother:

4And they gave him seventy weight of silver out of the temple of Baalberith: wherewith he hired to himself men that were needy, and vagabonds, and they followed him.

5And he came to his father’s house in Ephra, and slew his brethren the sons of Jerobaal, seventy men, upon one stone: and there remained only Joatham the youngest son of Jerobaal, who was hidden.

6And all the men of Sichem were gathered together, and all the families of the city of Mello: and they went and made Abimelech king, by the oak that stood in Sichem.

7This being told to Joatham, he went and stood on the top of mount Garizim: and lifting up his voice, he cried, and said: Hear me, ye men of Sichem, so may God hear you.

8The trees went to anoint a king over them: and they said to the olive tree: Reign thou over us.

9And it answered: Can I leave my fatness, which both gods and men make use of, to come to be promoted among the trees?

10And the trees said to the fig tree: Come thou and reign over us.

11And it answered them: Can I leave my sweetness, and my delicious fruits, and go to be promoted among the other trees?

12And the trees said to the vine: Come thou and reign over us.

13And it answered them: Can I forsake my wine, that cheereth God and men, and be promoted among the other trees?

14And all the trees said to the bramble: Come thou and reign over us.

15And it answered them: If indeed you mean to make me king, come ye and rest under my shadow: but if you mean it not, let fire come out from the bramble, and devour the cedars of Libanus.

16Now therefore if you have done well, and without sin in appointing Abimelech king over you, and have dealt well with Jerobaal, and with his house, and have made a suitable return for the benefits of him, who fought for you,

17And exposed his life to dangers, to deliver you from the hands of Madian,

18And you are now risen up against my father’s house, and have killed his sons seventy men upon one stone, and have made Abimelech the son of his handmaid king over the inhabitants of Sichem, because he is your brother:

19If therefore you have dealt well, and without fault with Jerobaal, and his house, rejoice ye this day in Abimelech, and may he rejoice in you.

20But if unjustly: let fire come out from him, and consume the inhabitants of Sichem, and the town of Mello: and let fire come out from the men of Sichem, and from the town of Mello, and devour Abimelech.

21And when he had said thus he fled, and went into Bera: and dwelt there for fear of Abimelech his brother.

22So Abimelech reigned over Israel for three years.

23And the Lord sent a very evil spirit between Abimelech and the inhabitants of Sichem: who began to detest him,

24And to leave the crime of the murder of the seventy sons of Jerobaal, and the shedding of their blood upon Abimelech their brother, and upon the rest of the princes of the Sichemites, who aided him.

25And they set an ambush against him on the top of the mountains: and while they waited for his coming, they committed robberies, taking spoils of all that passed by: and it was told Abimelech.

26And Gaal the son of Obed came with his brethren, and went over to Sichem. And the inhabitants of Sichem taking courage at his coming,

27Went out into the fields, wasting the vineyards, and treading down the grapes: and singing and dancing they went into the temple of their god, and in their banquets and cups they cursed Abimelech.

28And Gaal the son of Obed cried: Who is Abimelech, and what is Sichem, that we should serve him? Is he not the son of Jerobaal, and hath made Zebul his servant ruler over the men of Emor the father of Sichem? Why then shall we serve him?

29Would to God that some man would put this people under my hand, that I might remove Abimelech out of the way. And it was said to Abimelech: Gather together the multitude of an army, and come.

30For Zebul the ruler of the city, hearing the words of Gaal, the son of Obed, was very angry,

31And sent messengers privately to Abimelech, saying: Behold Gaal the son of Obed is come into Sichem with his brethren, and endeavoureth to set the city against thee.

32Arise therefore in the night with the people that is with thee and he hid in the field:

33And betimes in the morning at sun rising set upon the city. And when he shall come out against thee with his people, do to him what thou shalt be able.

34Abimelech therefore arose with all his army by night, and laid ambushes near Sichem in four places.

35And Gaal the son of Obed went out, and stood in the entrance of the gate of the city. And Abimelech rose up, and all his army with him from the places of the ambushes.

36And when Gaal saw the people, he said to Zebul: Behold a multitude cometh down from the mountains. And he answered him: Thou seest the shadows of the mountains as if they were the heads of men, and this is thy mistake.

37Again Gaal said: Behold there cometh people down from the middle of the land, and one troop cometh by the way that looketh towards the oak.

38And Zebul said to him: Where is now thy mouth wherewith thou saidst? Who is Abimelech that we should serve him? Is not this the people which thou didst despise? Go out, and fight against him.

39So Gaal went out in the sight of the people of Sichem, and fought against Abimelech,

40Who chased and put him to flight, and drove him to the city: and many were slain of his people, even to the gate of the city:

41And Abimelech sat down in Ruma: but Zebul drove Gaal, and his companions out of the city, and would not suffer them to abide in it.

42So the day following the people went out into the field. And it was told Abimelech.

43And he took his army, and divided it into three companies, and laid ambushes in the fields. And seeing that the people came out of the city, he arose and set upon them,

44With his own company, assaulting and besieging the city: whilst the two other companies chased the enemies that were scattered about the field.

45And Abimelech assaulted the city all that day: and took it, and killed the inhabitants thereof, and demolished it, so that he sowed salt in it.

46And when they who dwelt in the tower of Sichem had heard this, they went into the temple of their god Berith where they had made a covenant with him, and from thence the place had taken its name, and it was exceeding strong.

47Abimelech also hearing that the men of the tower of Sichem were gathered together,

48Went up into mount Selmon he and all his people with him: and taking an axe, he cut down the bough of a tree, and laying it on his shoulder and carrying it, he said to his companions: What you see me do, do you out of hand.

49So they cut down boughs from the trees, every man as fast as he could, and followed their leader. And surrounding the fort they set it on fire: and so it came to pass that with the smoke and with the fire a thousand persons were killed, men and women together, of the inhabitants of the tower of Sichem.

50Then Abimelech departing from thence came to the town of Thebes, which he surrounded and besieged with his army.

51And there was in the midst of the city a high tower, to which both the men and the women were fled together, and all the princes of the city, and having shut and strongly barred the gate, they stood upon the battlements of the tower to defend themselves.

52And Abimelech coming near the tower, fought stoutly: and approaching to the gate, endeavoured to set fire to it:

53And behold a certain woman casting a piece of a millstone from above, dashed it against the head of Abimelech, and broke his skull.

54And he called hastily to his armourbearer, and said to him: Draw thy sword, and kill me: lest it should be said that I was slain by a woman. He did as he was commanded, and slew him.

55And when he was dead, all the men of Israel that were with him, returned to their homes.

56And God repaid the evil, that Abimelech had done against his father, killing his seventy brethren.

57The Sichemites also were rewarded for what they had done, and the curse of Joatham the son of Jerobaal came upon them.

1A-vi-me-léc, con ông Giơ-rúp-ba-an, đến Si-khem gặp bà con bên ngoại, và nói với họ, cùng cả gia tộc bên ngoại rằng :

2“Xin bà con hỏi các thân hào Si-khem xem : điều nào tốt cho các vị ? Để cho bảy mươi người, tức là tất cả các con ông Giơ-rúp-ba-an cai trị các vị, hay là để một người cai trị các vị mà thôi ? Xin các vị nhớ cho rằng tôi là anh em ruột thịt của các vị.”

3Bà con bên ngoại dùng chính những lời đó nói về A-vi-me-léc cho toàn thể thân hào Si-khem nghe, và lòng họ nghiêng về A-vi-me-léc, vì họ nói : “Ông ấy là bà con của chúng ta.”

4Vậy họ trao cho ông bảy mươi se-ken bạc, lấy của đền Ba-an Bơ-rít, A-vi-me-léc dùng tiền ấy thuê những đứa vô lại cùng bọn du đãng, và chúng theo ông.

5Thế là ông đến nhà cha mình tại Óp-ra, hạ sát các anh em, tức là bảy mươi người con của ông Giơ-rúp-ba-an, trên cùng một tảng đá ; chỉ sót có Giô-tham, con út của ông Giơ-rúp-ba-an, vì anh ta lẩn trốn được.

6Bấy giờ tất cả thân hào Si-khem cùng toàn dân Bết Mi-lô họp lại, kéo đến tôn A-vi-me-léc lên làm vua, bên cạnh cây sồi trước bia đá ở Si-khem.

7Khi người ta báo tin ấy cho ông Giô-tham, ông liền lên đứng trên đỉnh núi Gơ-ri-dim, cất tiếng gọi và nói với những người kia rằng : “Hỡi các thân hào Si-khem ! Hãy nghe tôi đây, thì Thiên Chúa cũng sẽ nghe các người.

8Cây cối đã lên đường đi xức dầu phong một vua cai trị chúng. Chúng nói với cây ô-liu : ‘Hãy làm vua cai trị chúng tôi !’

9Nhưng cây ô-liu nói với chúng : ‘Chẳng lẽ tôi lại từ bỏ dầu của tôi là thứ đã từng làm cho thần minh và người đời được tôn trọng, mà đi đu đưa trên cây cối hay sao ?’

10Cây cối liền nói với cây vả : ‘Hãy đến làm vua cai trị chúng tôi !’

11Nhưng cây vả bảo chúng : ‘Chẳng lẽ tôi lại từ bỏ vị ngọt và trái ngon của tôi mà đi đu đưa trên cây cối hay sao ?’

12Bấy giờ cây cối nói với cây nho : ‘Hãy đến làm vua cai trị chúng tôi !’

13Nhưng cây nho bảo chúng : ‘Chẳng lẽ tôi lại từ bỏ rượu của tôi là thứ đã từng làm cho thần minh và người đời phấn khởi, mà đi đu đưa trên cây cối hay sao ?’

14Tất cả cây cối liền nói với bụi gai : ‘Hãy đến làm vua cai trị chúng tôi !’

15Bụi gai trả lời cây cối : ‘Nếu quả thật các ngươi xức dầu phong ta làm vua cai trị các ngươi, thì hãy tới nương náu dưới bóng ta ; bằng không, lửa sẽ bốc ra từ bụi gai và sẽ thiêu rụi các cây bá hương Li-băng !’

16Các người có đối xử thành thật và trọn đạo khi tôn A-vi-me-léc lên làm vua không ? Các người có đối xử tốt với ông Giơ-rúp-ba-an và nhà ông ấy không ? Có đối xử với ông xứng với công lao của ông không ?

17Cha tôi đã chiến đấu vì các người, đã liều mạng để giải thoát các người khỏi tay quân Ma-đi-an.

18Thế mà ngày nay các người lại phản bội nhà cha tôi, tàn sát con cái ông, tất cả bảy mươi người trên cùng một tảng đá, rồi đặt đứa con người tỳ thiếp của ông là A-vi-me-léc lên làm vua cai trị các thân hào Si-khem, vì y là bà con của các người.

19Vậy, nếu ngày hôm nay các người đã đối xử thành thật và trọn đạo với ông Giơ-rúp-ba-an và nhà ông, thì cứ việc vui vì A-vi-me-léc, và mong sao y cũng được vui vì các người.

20Bằng không, thì xin cho một ngọn lửa phát ra từ A-vi-me-léc để thiêu huỷ các thân hào Si-khem cùng với dân Bết Mi-lô, và xin cho một ngọn lửa phát ra từ các thân hào Si-khem và dân Bết Mi-lô để thiêu huỷ A-vi-me-léc nữa !”

21Rồi ông Giô-tham chạy về phía Bơ-e và trú ngụ tại đây, vì sợ A-vi-me-léc, người anh em của ông.

22A-vi-me-léc cầm quyền cai trị Ít-ra-en ba năm.

23Rồi Thiên Chúa gây một thần khí bất hoà giữa A-vi-me-léc và các thân hào Si-khem, khiến các thân hào Si-khem phản lại A-vi-me-léc.

24Như vậy là để báo phục tội giết bảy mươi người con ông Giơ-rúp-ba-an, và để làm cho máu họ đổ xuống trên A-vi-me-léc, người anh em đã giết họ, và đổ xuống trên các thân hào Si-khem, những người đã tiếp tay với y, để y giết anh em mình.

25Các thân hào Si-khem đã đặt những ổ mai phục trên các ngọn núi, để cướp bóc tất cả những người đi ngang qua đó. Người ta báo tin ấy cho A-vi-me-léc biết.

26Bấy giờ ông Ga-an, con ông E-vét, cùng đi với anh em ông, và họ qua Si-khem ; các thân hào Si-khem tín nhiệm ông.

27Họ ra vườn hái nho, rồi đạp ép và tổ chức vui chơi. Họ vào đền các thần minh của họ, ăn uống và nguyền rủa A-vi-me-léc.

28Ông Ga-an, con ông E-vét nói : “A-vi-me-léc là ai, và Si-khem là ai mà chúng ta làm tôi nó ? Nó chẳng phải là con Giơ-rúp-ba-an, và đại diện của nó chẳng phải là Dơ-vun sao ? Các người hãy làm tôi con cái Kha-mo, cha của Si-khem ; còn chúng tôi, việc gì chúng tôi phải làm tôi nó ?

29Ai sẽ trao dân này vào tay tôi, để tôi loại trừ A-vi-me-léc ? Và tôi nói với nó : ‘Hãy tăng thêm quân của mi và ra đây !’”

30Ông Dơ-vun, tổng trấn thành, nghe những lời ông Ga-an, con ông E-vét nói, thì nổi giận.

31Ông lập mưu sai sứ đến nói với A-vi-me-léc rằng : “Này, Ga-an, con của E-vét, và anh em y đã đến Si-khem và đang khích động thành này chống lại ông.

32Vậy, đang đêm ông hãy trỗi dậy, và cùng với quân lính của ông mai phục ngoài đồng.

33Rồi sáng sớm, lúc rạng đông, hãy mau lẹ tấn công thành. Khi y và đám người cùng đi với y ra đón ông, thì gặp chúng đâu ông hãy đánh đó.”

34Đang đêm, A-vi-me-léc cùng với quân lính của ông trỗi dậy, chia thành bốn nhóm mai phục gần Si-khem.

35Ông Ga-an, con ông E-vét, đi ra và dừng lại ở lối vào cổng thành. A-vi-me-léc cùng với quân lính của ông từ chỗ mai phục trỗi dậy.

36Ông Ga-an thấy đám dân thì nói với ông Dơ-vun : “Đây là đám dân từ các đỉnh núi xuống.” Nhưng ông Dơ-vun nói : “Đó là bóng núi mà ông lại trông ra như người ta.”

37Ông Ga-an còn lên tiếng nói : “Đây là những người từ rốn đất mà xuống, còn nhóm kia thì từ con đường Cây Sồi Các Thầy Bói mà đến.”

38Bấy giờ ông Dơ-vun nói với ông : “Đâu rồi cái miệng ngươi từng nói : A-vi-me-léc là ai mà chúng ta làm tôi nó ? Đây chẳng phải là đám dân ngươi đã khinh dể sao ? Bây giờ ngươi hãy đi ra mà giao chiến với nó.”

39Ông Ga-an đi ra, dẫn đầu các thân hào Si-khem, giao chiến với A-vi-me-léc.

40Nhưng A-vi-me-léc đuổi đánh ông, và ông Ga-an phải trốn chạy. Nhiều người gục chết trước khi tới được lối vào cổng.

41Sau đó A-vi-me-léc cư ngụ ở A-ru-ma ; còn ông Dơ-vun thì trục xuất ông Ga-an và anh em ông, không cho ở Si-khem nữa.

42Hôm sau đám người kia đi ra cánh đồng, và người ta báo cho A-vi-me-léc biết.

43Ông lấy dân của mình chia thành ba nhóm và sắp xếp một cuộc mai phục ngoài đồng. Ông nhìn, và này đám người kia đi ra khỏi thành ; ông trỗi dậy tiến đánh chúng tơi bời.

44A-vi-me-léc cùng với quân lính của ông ập tới chặn lối vào cổng thành, còn hai nhóm kia thì ập tới tất cả những kẻ ở ngoài đồng và đánh chúng tơi bời.

45Suốt ngày hôm ấy A-vi-me-léc tấn công thành. Ông đã chiếm được thành và tàn sát tất cả dân cư, rồi triệt hạ và rắc muối lên thành.

46Nghe tin đó, các thân hào Mích-đan Si-khem liền xuống hầm đền thờ En Bơ-rít.

47Người ta báo tin cho A-vi-me-léc biết là tất cả thân hào Mích-đan Si-khem đã họp nhau lại.

48Bấy giờ A-vi-me-léc lên núi Xan-môn cùng với tất cả quân lính của ông. Ông cầm rìu chặt một cành cây, giơ lên, rồi đặt xuống vai mình, và nói với quân lính của ông : “Các anh thấy tôi làm gì, thì cứ làm như tôi, mau lên !”

49Mọi người đều chặt, mỗi người một cành cây. Họ đi theo A-vi-me-léc, đặt cành cây trên hầm, rồi nổi lửa đốt hầm, làm cho mọi người ở Mích-đan Si-khem chết hết, khoảng chừng một ngàn người, cả đàn ông lẫn đàn bà.

50Sau đó A-vi-me-léc đi đến Tê-vết, đóng trại đối diện với Tê-vết và chiếm thành ấy.

51Có một ngọn tháp kiên cố ở giữa thành và tất cả đàn ông, đàn bà cùng toàn thể các thân hào trong thành đều trốn vào tháp ấy ; họ ẩn náu bên trong và leo lên lầu của ngọn tháp.

52A-vi-me-léc đi tới và tấn công tháp ; ông đến sát lối vào tháp để châm lửa đốt.

53Bấy giờ một người đàn bà liệng một phiến đá cối xuống đầu A-vi-me-léc làm ông bể sọ.

54Ông liền gọi chàng thanh niên cận vệ của mình và bảo : “Hãy tuốt gươm giết ta đi, kẻo người ta lại nói về ta rằng : Một người đàn bà đã giết hắn.” Người cận vệ đâm ông, và ông đã chết.

55Người Ít-ra-en thấy A-vi-me-léc đã chết thì bỏ đi, ai nấy về nhà mình.

56Thế là Thiên Chúa đã báo oán A-vi-me-léc vì sự dữ ông đã gây cho thân phụ mình là giết bảy mươi người anh em.

57Và Thiên Chúa đã báo oán những người Si-khem vì tất cả sự dữ họ đã gây ra. Như thế là đã ứng nghiệm nơi họ lời chúc dữ của Giô-tham, con ông Giơ-rúp-ba-an.
