1 Samuel

1Now all the troops of the Philistines were gathered together to Aphec: and Israel also camped by the fountain which is in Jezrahel.

2And the lords of the Philistines marched with their hundreds and their thousands: but David and his men were in the rear with Achis.

3And the princes of the Philistines said to Achis: What mean these Hebrews? And Achis said to the princes of the Philistines: Do you not know David, who was the servant of Saul the king of Israel, and hath been with me many days, or years, and I have found no fault in him, since the day that he fled over to me until this day?

4But the princes of the Philistines were angry with him, and they said to him: Let this man return, and abide in his place, which thou hast appointed him, and let him not go down with us to battle, lest he be an adversary to us, when we shall begin to fight: for how can he otherwise appease his master, but with our heads?

5Is not this David, to whom they sung in their dances, saying: Saul slew his thousands, and David his ten thousands?

6Then Achis called David, and said to him: As the Lord liveth, thou art upright and good in my sight: and so is thy going out, and thy coming in with me in the army: and I have not found my evil in thee, since the day that thou camest to me unto this day: but thou pleasest not the lords.

7Return therefore, and go in peace, and offend not the eyes of the princes of the Philistines.

8And David said to Achis: But what have I done, and what hast thou found in me thy servant, from the day that I have been in thy sight until this day, that I may not go and fight against the enemies of my lord the king?

9And Achis answering said to David: I know that thou art good in my sight, as an angel of God: but the princes of the Philistines have said: He shall not go up with us to the battle.

10Therefore arise in the morning, thou, and the servants of thy lord, who came with thee: and when you are up before day, and it shall begin to be light, go on your way.

11So David and his men arose in the night, that they might set forward in the morning, and returned to the land of the Philistines: and the Philistines went up to Jezrahel.

1Người Phi-li-tinh tập họp toàn thể quân đội tại A-phếch, còn người Ít-ra-en thì đóng trại tại suối nước ở Gít-rơ-en.

2Các vương hầu người Phi-li-tinh dẫn đầu các đoàn một trăm, một ngàn quân đi diễu hành ; ông Đa-vít và người của ông diễu hành sau cùng với vua A-khít.

3Các người chỉ huy Phi-li-tinh hỏi : “Bọn Híp-ri kia là gì vậy ?” Vua A-khít nói với các người chỉ huy Phi-li-tinh : “Đó là Đa-vít, tôi tớ ông Sa-un, vua Ít-ra-en, chứ ai ! Hắn ở với tôi từ một hai năm nay, và tôi không thấy nơi hắn điều gì đáng trách, từ ngày hắn về đầu hàng tôi cho đến hôm nay.”

4Các người chỉ huy Phi-li-tinh nổi giận với vua và nói : “Ông hãy cho người ấy về, nó hãy về nơi ông đã chỉ định cho nó. Nó không được cùng với chúng ta xuống giao chiến, kẻo nó trở nên địch thủ của chúng ta trong chiến trận. Nó sẽ dùng gì mà lấy lòng chúa thượng nó, nếu không phải là dùng đầu của những người này ?

6Vua A-khít gọi ông Đa-vít lại và nói với ông : “Có ĐỨC CHÚA hằng sống, ông là người ngay thẳng. Tôi lấy làm vui thấy ông cùng với tôi ra vào chiến đấu, vì tôi không thấy điều gì xấu nơi ông, từ ngày ông đến với tôi cho đến ngày hôm nay. Nhưng ông không được lòng các vương hầu.

7Vậy ông hãy về và ra đi bình an. Ông đừng làm điều gì phật lòng các vương hầu người Phi-li-tinh.”

8Ông Đa-vít nói với vua : “Tôi đã làm gì ? Từ ngày tôi phục vụ ngài cho đến hôm nay ngài đã thấy điều gì đáng trách nơi tôi tớ ngài, khiến tôi không thể đến giao chiến với các kẻ thù của đức vua là chúa thượng tôi ?”

9Vua A-khít trả lời ông Đa-vít : “Tôi biết ông đẹp lòng tôi như một sứ giả của Thiên Chúa. Có điều là các người chỉ huy Phi-li-tinh đã nói : ‘Nó không được cùng với chúng ta lên giao chiến.’

10Vậy sáng mai ông hãy dậy sớm, cũng như các tôi tớ của chủ ông đã đến với ông. Các ông hãy dậy sớm, và khi trời sáng, hãy ra đi.”

11Ông Đa-vít dậy sớm cùng với người của ông, để ra đi ngay từ sáng sớm và trở về đất Phi-li-tinh. Còn người Phi-li-tinh thì lên Gít-rơ-en.
