1And it came to pass in those days, that the Philistines gathered together their armies to be prepared for war against Israel: and Achis said to David: Know thou now assuredly, that thou shalt go out with me to the war, thou, and thy men.
2And David said to Achis: Now thou shalt know what thy servant will do. And Achis said to David: And I will appoint thee to guard my life for ever.
3Now Samuel was dead, and all Israel mourned for him, and buried him in Ramatha his city. And Saul had put away all the magicians and soothsayers out of the land.
4And the Philistines were gathered together, and came and camped in Sunam: and Saul also gathered together all Israel, and came to Gelboe.
5And Saul saw the army of the Plilistines, and was afraid, and his heart was very much dismayed.
6And he consulted the Lord, and he answered him not, neither by dreams, nor by priests, nor by prophets.
7And Saul said to his servants: Seek me a woman that hath a divining spirit, and I will go to her, and inquire by her. And his servants said to him: There is a woman that hath a divining spirit at Endor.
8Then he disguised himself: and put on other clothes, and he went, and two men with him, and they came to the woman by night, and he said to her: Divine to me by thy divining spirit, and bring me up him whom I shall tell thee.
9And the woman said to him: Behold thou knowest all that Saul hath done, and how he hath rooted out the magicians and soothsayers from the land: why then dost thou lay a snare for my life, to cause me to be put to death?
10And Saul swore unto her by the Lord, saying: As the Lord liveth there shall no evil happen to thee for this thing.
11And the woman said to him: Whom shall I bring up to thee? And he said, Bring me up Samuel.
12And when the woman saw Samuel, she cried out with a loud voice, and said to Saul: Why hast thou deceived me? for thou art Saul.
13And the king said to her: Fear not: what hast thou seen? And the woman said to Saul: I saw gods ascending out of the earth.
14And he said to her: What form is he of? And she said: An old man cometh up, and he is covered with a mantle. And Saul understood that it was Samuel, and he bowed himself with his face to the ground, and adored.
15And Samuel said to Saul: Why hast thou disturbed my rest, that I should be brought up? And Saul said, I am in great distress: for the Philistines fight against me, and God is departed from me, and would not hear me, neither by the hand of prophets, nor by dreams: therefore I have called thee, that thou mayest shew me what I shall do.
16And Samuel said: Why askest thou me, seeing the Lord has departed from thee, and is gone over to thy rival:
17For the Lord will do to thee as he spoke by me, and he will rend thy kingdom out of thy hand, and will give it to thy neighbour David:
18Because thou didst not obey the voice of the Lord, neither didst thou execute the wrath of his indignation upon Amalec. Therefore hath the Lord done to thee what thou sufferest this day.
19And the Lord also will deliver Israel with thee into the hands of the Philistines: and tomorrow thou and thy sons shall be with me: and the Lord will also deliver the army of Israel into the hands of the Philistines.
20And forthwith Saul fell all along on the ground, for he was frightened with the words of Samuel, and there was no strength in him, for he had eaten no bread all that day.
21And the woman came to Saul (for he was very much troubled) and said to him: Behold thy handmaid hath obeyed thy voice, and I have put my life in my hand: and I hearkened unto the words which thou spokest to me.
22Now therefore hear thou also the voice of thy handmaid, and let me set before thee a morsel of bread, that thou mayest eat and recover strength, and be able to go on thy journey.
23But he refused, and said: I will not eat. But his servants and the woman forced him, and at length hearkening to their voice, he arose from the ground and sat upon the bed.
24Now the woman had a fatted calf in the house, and she made haste and killed it: and taking meal kneaded it, and baked some unleavened bread,
25And set it before Saul, and before his servants. And when they had eaten they rose up, and walked all that night.
1Thời ấy, người Phi-li-tinh tập hợp quân đội để ra trận giao chiến với Ít-ra-en. Vua A-khít nói với ông Đa-vít : “Ông phải biết rằng ông và người của ông sẽ ra quân với tôi.”
4Người Phi-li-tinh tập hợp lại và đến đóng trại ở Su-nêm. Vua Sa-un tập hợp toàn thể Ít-ra-en, và họ đóng trại ở Ghin-bô-a.
5Vua Sa-un thấy trại của người Phi-li-tinh thì sợ và tim ông đập mạnh.
6Ông thỉnh ý ĐỨC CHÚA nhưng ĐỨC CHÚA không trả lời, dù bằng giấc mộng, bằng thẻ u-rim, hay qua trung gian ngôn sứ.
7Vua Sa-un bảo triều thần : “Hãy tìm cho ta một bà đồng bóng, để ta thỉnh ý bà ấy.” Triều thần nói với vua : “Thưa có một bà đồng bóng ở Ên Đo.”
8Vua Sa-un cải trang, mặc áo khác rồi ra đi, có hai người cùng đi với vua. Đang đêm, họ đến nhà người đàn bà, và vua nói : “Xin bà ngồi đồng mà bói cho tôi, và hãy gọi lên cho tôi người tôi sẽ nói cho bà biết.”
9Người đàn bà nói với vua : “Này chính ông biết điều vua Sa-un đã làm : vua đã diệt trừ các người đồng bóng và các thầy bói trong xứ. Vậy tại sao ông lại gài bẫy hại tôi để làm cho tôi phải chết ?”
10Vua Sa-un lấy ĐỨC CHÚA mà thề với bà ấy : “Có ĐỨC CHÚA hằng sống, tôi xin thề rằng bà sẽ không mắc lỗi trong việc này.”
12Người đàn bà trông thấy ông Sa-mu-en và rú lên. Người đàn bà nói với vua Sa-un : “Tại sao ngài lại đánh lừa tôi ? Ngài là vua Sa-un !”
13Vua nói với bà : “Đừng sợ ! Bà đã trông thấy gì ?” Người đàn bà trả lời vua Sa-un : “Tôi đã trông thấy một thần linh đang từ đất đi lên.”
14Vua hỏi : “Hình dáng thế nào ?” Bà đáp : “Một cụ già đi lên, mình quấn áo choàng.” Vua Sa-un biết đó là ông Sa-mu-en, liền sấp mặt sát đất mà lạy.
15Ông Sa-mu-en hỏi vua Sa-un : “Tại sao ngài lại gọi tôi lên mà quấy rầy tôi ?” Vua Sa-un trả lời : “Tôi lâm vào cảnh rất ngặt nghèo. Người Phi-li-tinh đang giao chiến với tôi, và Thiên Chúa đã rời khỏi tôi : Người không trả lời tôi nữa, dù qua trung gian ngôn sứ, hay qua giấc mộng. Vậy tôi đã gọi ông, để ông cho tôi biết tôi phải làm gì.”
16Ông Sa-mu-en nói : “Tại sao ngài thỉnh ý tôi, trong khi ĐỨC CHÚA đã rời khỏi ngài và đã trở nên thù địch với ngài ?
17ĐỨC CHÚA đã hành động như Người đã dùng tôi mà phán : ĐỨC CHÚA đã giật vương quyền ra khỏi tay ngài và ban cho một người khác là Đa-vít.
18Bởi vì ngài đã không nghe tiếng ĐỨC CHÚA và đã không trút cơn thịnh nộ của Người xuống A-ma-lếch, cho nên hôm nay ĐỨC CHÚA đã xử với ngài như thế.
20Lập tức vua Sa-un ngã sóng sượt xuống đất : vua quá sợ hãi vì lời ông Sa-mu-en nói. Hơn nữa, vua không còn sức, vì suốt ngày suốt đêm hôm ấy đã không ăn gì.
21Người đàn bà đến bên vua Sa-un và thấy vua quá kinh hoàng thì nói với vua : “Ngài coi, nữ tỳ ngài đã nghe theo ngài. Tôi đã liều mạng và vâng nghe những lời ngài truyền cho tôi.
22Vậy bây giờ, xin ngài cũng vui lòng nghe theo nữ tỳ ngài : tôi xin dọn cho ngài miếng bánh, và xin ngài ăn để có sức tiếp tục lên đường.”
23Vua từ chối và nói : “Ta sẽ không ăn đâu.” Các người theo hầu cũng như người đàn bà nài nỉ vua, nên vua nghe theo họ. Vua trỗi dậy từ dưới đất và ngồi lên giường.
24Người đàn bà có một con bê béo trong nhà. Bà vội vàng làm thịt, lấy bột mà nhồi, rồi nướng bánh không men.
25Bà dọn ra trước mặt vua Sa-un và trước mặt các người theo hầu vua. Họ ăn rồi đứng dậy và đi ngay đêm ấy.
