1 Maccabees

1Now Judas heard of the fame of the Romans, that they are powerful and strong, and willingly agree to all things that are requested of them: and that whosoever have come to them, they have made amity with them, and that they are mighty in power.

2And they heard of their battles, and their noble acts, which they had done in Galatia, how they conquered them, and brought them under tribute:

3And how great things they had done in the land of Spain, and that they had brought under their power the mines of silver and of gold that are there, and had gotten possession of all the place by their counsel and patience:

4And had conquered places that were very far off from them, and kings that came against them from the ends of the earth, and had overthrown them with great slaughter: and the rest pay them tribute every year.

5And that they had defeated in battle Philip, and Perses the king of the Ceteans, and the rest that had borne arms against them, and had conquered them:

6And how Antiochus the great king of Asia, who went to fight against them, having a hundred and twenty elephants, with horsemen, and chariots, and a very great army, was routed by them:

7And how they took him alive, and appointed to him, that both he and they that should reign after him, should pay a great tribute, and that he should give hostages, and that which was agreed upon,

8And the country of the Indians, and of the Medes, and of the Lydians, some of their best provinces: and those which they had taken from them they gave to king Eumenes.

9And that they who were in Greece had a mind to go and to destroy them: and they had knowledge thereof,

10And they sent a general against them, and fought with them, and many of them were slain, and they carried away their wives and their children captives, and spoiled them, and took possession of their land, and threw down their walls, and brought them to be their servants unto this day.

11And the other kingdoms, and islands, that at any time had resisted them, they had destroyed and brought under their power.

12But with their friends, and such as relied upon them, they kept amity, and had conquered kingdoms that were near, and that were far off: for all that heard their name, were afraid of them.

13That whom they had a mind to help to a kingdom, those reigned: and whom they would, they deposed from a kingdom: and they were greatly exalted.

14And none of all these wore a crown, or was clothed in purple, to be magnified thereby.

15And that they made themselves a senate house, and consulted daily three hundred and twenty men, that sat in council always for the people, that they might do the things that were right.

16And that they committed their government to one man every year, to rule over all their country, and they all obey one, and there is no envy, nor jealousy amongst them.

17So Judas chose Eupolemus the son of John, the son of Jacob, and Jason the son of Eleazar, and he sent them to Rome to make a league of amity and confederacy with them.

18And that they might take off from them the yoke of the Grecians, for they saw that they oppressed the kingdom of Israel with servitude.

19And they went to Rome, a very long journey, and they entered into the senate house, and said:

20Judas Machabeus, and his brethren, and the people of the Jews have sent us to you, to make alliance and peace with you, and that we may be registered your confederates and friends.

21And the proposal was pleasing in their sight.

22And this is the copy of the writing that they wrote back again, graven in tables of brass, and sent to Jerusalem, that it might be with them there for a memorial of the peace and alliance.

23GOOD SUCCESS BE TO THE ROMANS, and to the people of the Jews, by sea and by land for ever: and far be the sword and enemy from them.

24But if there come first any war upon the Romans, or any of their confederates, in all their dominions:

25The nation of the Jews shall help them according as the time shall direct, with all their heart:

26Neither shall they give them, whilst they are fighting, or furnish them with wheat, or arms, or money, or ships, as it hath seemed good to the Romans: and they shall obey their orders, without taking any thing of them.

27In like manner also if war shall come first upon the nation of the Jews, the Romans shall help them with all their heart, according as the time shall permit them.

28And there shall not be given to them that come to their aid, either wheat, or arms, or money, or ships, as it hath seemed good to the Romans: and they shall observe their orders without deceit.

29According to these articles did the Romans covenant with the people of the Jews.

30And if after this one party or the other shall have a mind to add to these articles, or take away anything, they may do it at their pleasure: and whatsoever they shall add, or take away, shall be ratified.

31Moreover concerning the evils that Demetrius the king hath done against them, we have written to him, saying: Why hast thou made thy yoke heavy upon our friends, and allies, the Jews?

32If therefore they come again to us complaining of thee, we will do them justice, and will make war against thee by sea and land.

1Ông Giu-đa được nghe nói về tiếng tăm của người Rô-ma : họ là những chiến binh dũng cảm, lại niềm nở đón tiếp tất cả những người muốn gia nhập hàng ngũ của họ ; họ tỏ tình hữu nghị với bất cứ ai đến với mình. Họ là những chiến binh dũng cảm.

2Người ta cũng thuật lại cho ông Giu-đa những cuộc giao tranh và những chiến công người Rô-ma đã lập được giữa dân Ga-lát, là dân họ đã chinh phục được và bắt phải triều cống.

3Ông cũng được nghe nói về tất cả những gì họ đã làm trong miền Tây Ban Nha để chiếm các mỏ vàng mỏ bạc ở đó.

4Họ đã chinh phục được cả vùng nhờ mưu lược và lòng kiên nhẫn – dù vùng ấy rất xa xôi đối với họ ; cả những vua từ tận cùng cõi đất tấn công họ, rốt cuộc cũng bị họ đánh tan, bị giáng cho một đòn chí tử. Còn những dân khác thì phải triều cống họ hàng năm.

5Ngay cả các ông Phi-líp-phê và Péc-xê, vua dân Kít-tim và những kẻ nổi lên chống lại họ, cũng bị họ đánh tan trong trận chiến và bị họ chinh phục.

6An-ti-ô-khô Cả, vua A-xi-a, giao chiến với họ, đem theo một trăm hai mươi thớt voi cùng với kỵ binh, chiến xa và một đạo quân thật hùng hậu, nhưng rồi cũng bị họ đánh tan.

7Họ đã bắt sống ông ta, rồi bắt cả ông lẫn các người kế vị ông phải triều cống thật nặng, phải nộp các con tin và nhượng

8xứ Ấn-độ, xứ Mê-đi, xứ Ly-đi-a và một vài vùng trong số các vùng đẹp nhất, sau đó họ đem tất cả tặng cho vua Êu-mê-nê.

9Người Hy-lạp dự tính tiêu diệt họ.

10Hay tin ấy, người Rô-ma phái một tướng duy nhất đến tấn công ; họ đã giao chiến với chúng và phía chúng có nhiều người bị tử thương. Họ bắt vợ con chúng đi đày, cướp phá tài sản, làm chủ đất đai, triệt hạ các pháo đài của chúng và bắt chúng làm nô lệ cho đến ngày nay.

11Các nước khác và các đảo, tất cả những ai nổi lên chống lại họ đều bị họ tàn phá và bắt làm nô lệ.

12Còn các bạn hữu và những ai cậy dựa vào họ thì họ vẫn giữ tình hữu nghị. Họ đã khuất phục được các vua gần xa ; nghe đến danh họ, ai cũng đều sợ hãi.

13Họ giúp ai làm vua thì người ấy được, muốn hạ bệ ai cũng tuỳ ý họ. Họ đạt tới tột đỉnh quyền lực.

14Dầu vậy, không một ai trong họ đã đội vương miện hay mặc cẩm bào để được vinh hoa phú quý.

15Họ lập ra một nghị viện gồm ba trăm hai mươi nghị viên, mỗi ngày bàn bạc về tất cả những gì liên quan đến dân chúng nhằm làm cho xã hội được tốt đẹp.

16Mỗi năm, họ chỉ trao cho một người quyền lãnh đạo và cai trị toàn lãnh thổ ; mọi người đều vâng phục con người duy nhất đó và giữa họ không có đố kỵ ghen tuông.

17Ông Giu-đa chọn ông Êu-pô-lê-mô con ông Gio-an, cháu ông Ắc-cô, và ông Gia-xon con ông E-la-da, rồi phái các ông sang Rô-ma ký kết hoà ước hữu nghị và liên minh với người Rô-ma,

18nhằm rũ bỏ ách đô hộ, vì họ thấy người Hy-lạp đã bắt dân Ít-ra-en phải làm nô lệ.

19Hai ông khởi hành đi Rô-ma. Sau chuyến đi thật lâu dài, họ tới nghị viện và lên tiếng nói :

20“Ông Giu-đa cũng gọi là Ma-ca-bê, và các anh em cùng với dân Do-thái sai chúng tôi đến gặp quý ngài để ký hiệp ước liên minh và hoà bình, hầu chúng tôi được kể vào số đồng minh và bạn hữu của quý ngài.”

21Đề nghị đó làm người Rô-ma hài lòng.

22Đây là bản sao bức thư họ đã khắc trên các tấm lá đồng và gửi về Giê-ru-sa-lem để làm bằng chứng hiệp ước liên minh và hoà bình.

23“Chúc người Rô-ma và dân Do-thái đời đời thịnh vượng, ngoài biển khơi cũng như trên đất liền ! Ước gì họ không gặp gươm giáo và quân thù !

24Nếu xảy ra chiến tranh ở chính Rô-ma hay ở nơi nào trong liên minh thuộc quyền bá chủ của Rô-ma,

25thì dân Do-thái sẽ tận tình cùng tham chiến, tuỳ theo hoàn cảnh đòi hỏi,

26và không được cung cấp lúa mì, khí giới, tiền bạc, tàu bè giúp đỡ phe địch. Phía Rô-ma đã quyết định như thế và đòi hỏi phải thi hành vô điều kiện những lời cam kết.

27Cũng vậy, nếu có chiến tranh chống lại chính dân Do-thái, thì người Rô-ma cũng sẽ tận tình tham chiến, tuỳ theo hoàn cảnh đòi hỏi,

28và cũng sẽ không cung cấp lúa mì, khí giới, tiền bạc, tàu bè giúp đỡ đối phương. Phía Rô-ma đã quyết định như thế và sẽ nghiêm chỉnh thi hành những lời cam kết.

29Người Rô-ma đã quy định cho dân Do-thái những điều khoản trên.

30Nhưng nếu sau này, trong những điều nói trên đôi bên muốn thêm bớt gì, thì phải cùng nhau thoả thuận, và điều thêm hay bớt sẽ có giá trị.”

31Còn về những tai hoạ vua Đê-mết-ri-ô gây ra cho người Do-thái, chúng tôi đã viết cho vua ấy rằng : “Tại sao nhà vua lại đem ách đô hộ đè lên người Do-thái là bạn hữu và đồng minh của chúng tôi ?

32Vậy nếu họ còn tố cáo nhà vua nữa, thì chúng tôi sẽ phân xử cho họ, và sẽ giao chiến với nhà vua ngoài biển khơi cũng như trên đất liền.”
