雅各被杀，彼得被囚

1那时，希律王下手苦害教会中几个人，

2用刀杀了约翰的哥哥雅各。

3他见犹太人喜欢这事，又去捉拿彼得。那时正是除酵的日子。

4希律拿了彼得，收在监里，交付四班兵丁看守，每班四个人，意思要在逾越节后把他提出来，当着百姓办他。

5于是彼得被囚在监里；教会却为他切切地祷告 神。

彼得获救出狱

6希律将要提他出来的前一夜，彼得被两条铁链锁着，睡在两个兵丁当中；看守的人也在门外看守。

7忽然，有主的一个使者站在旁边，屋里有光照耀，天使拍彼得的肋旁，拍醒了他，说：「快快起来！」那铁链就从他手上脱落下来。

8天使对他说：「束上带子，穿上鞋。」他就那样做。天使又说：「披上外衣，跟着我来。」

9彼得就出来跟着他，不知道天使所做是真的，只当见了异象。

10过了第一层第二层监牢，就来到临街的铁门，那门自己开了。他们出来，走过一条街，天使便离开他去了。

11彼得醒悟过来，说：「我现在真知道主差遣他的使者，救我脱离希律的手和犹太百姓一切所盼望的。」

12想了一想，就往那称呼马可的约翰、他母亲马利亚家去，在那里有好些人聚集祷告。

13彼得敲外门，有一个使女，名叫罗大，出来探听，

14听得是彼得的声音，就欢喜的顾不得开门，跑进去告诉众人说：「彼得站在门外。」

15他们说：「你是疯了！」使女极力地说：「真是他！」他们说：「必是他的天使！」

16彼得不住地敲门。他们开了门，看见他，就甚惊奇。

17彼得摆手，不要他们作声，就告诉他们主怎样领他出监；又说：「你们把这事告诉雅各和众弟兄。」于是出去，往别处去了。

18到了天亮，兵丁扰乱得很，不知道彼得往哪里去了。

19希律找他，找不着，就审问看守的人，吩咐把他们拉去杀了。后来希律离开犹太，下凯撒利亚去，住在那里。

希律的死

20希律恼怒泰尔、西顿的人。他们那一带地方是从王的地土得粮，因此就托了王的内侍臣伯拉斯都的情，一心来求和。

21希律在所定的日子，穿上朝服，坐在位上，对他们讲论一番。

22百姓喊着说：「这是神的声音，不是人的声音。」

23希律不归荣耀给 神，所以主的使者立刻罚他，他被虫所咬，气就绝了。

24神的道日见兴旺，越发广传。

25巴拿巴和扫罗办完了他们供给的事，就从耶路撒冷回来，带着称呼马可的约翰同去。

1And at the same time, Herod the king stretched forth his hands, to afflict some of the church.

2And he killed James, the brother of John, with the sword.

3And seeing that it pleased the Jews, he proceeded to take up Peter also. Now it was in the days of the Azymes.

4And when he had apprehended him, he cast him into prison, delivering him to four files of soldiers to be kept, intending, after the pasch, to bring him forth to the people.

5Peter therefore was kept in prison. But prayer was made without ceasing by the church unto God for him.

6And when Herod would have brought him forth, the same night Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains: and the keepers before the door kept the prison.

7And behold an angel of the Lord stood by him: and a light shined in the room: and he striking Peter on the side, raised him up, saying: Arise quickly. And the chains fell off from his hands.

8And the angel said to him: Gird thyself, and put on thy sandals. And he did so. And he said to him: Cast thy garment about thee, and follow me.

9And going out, he followed him, and he knew not that it was true which was done by the angel: but thought he saw a vision.

10And passing through the first and the second ward, they came to the iron gate that leadeth to the city, which of itself opened to them. And going out, they passed on through one street: and immediately the angel departed from him.

11And Peter coming to himself, said: Now I know in very deed, that the Lord hath sent his angel, and hath delivered me out of the hand of Herod, and from all the expectation of the people of the Jews.

12And considering, he came to the house of Mary the mother of John, who was surnamed Mark, where many were gathered together and praying.

13And when he knocked at the door of the gate, a damsel came to hearken, whose name was Rhode.

14And as soon as she knew Peter’s voice, she opened not the gate for joy, but running in she told that Peter stood before the gate.

15But they said to her: Thou art mad. But she affirmed that it was so. Then said they: It is his angel.

16But Peter continued knocking. And when they had opened, they saw him, and were astonished.

17But he beckoning to them with his hand to hold their peace, told how the Lord had brought him out of prison, and he said: Tell these things to James, and to the brethren. And going out, he went into another place.

18Now when day was come, there was no small stir among the soldiers, what was become of Peter.

19And when Herod had sought for him, and found him not; having examined the keepers, he commanded they should be put to death; and going down from Judea to Caesarea, he abode there.

20And he was angry with the Tyrians and the Sidonians. But they with one accord came to him, and having gained Blastus, who was the king’s chamberlain, they desired peace, because their countries were nourished by him.

21And upon a day appointed, Herod being arrayed in kingly apparel, sat in the judgment seat, and made an oration to them.

22And the people made acclamation, saying: It is the voice of a god, and not of a man.

23And forthwith an angel of the Lord struck him, because he had not given the honour to God: and being eaten up by worms, he gave up the ghost.

24But the word of the Lord increased and multiplied.

25And Barnabas and Saul returned from Jerusalem, having fulfilled their ministry, taking with them John, who was surnamed Mark.
