The Parable of the Sower

1That same day Jesus went out of the house and sat by the sea.

2Such large crowds gathered around Him that He got into a boat and sat down, while all the people stood on the shore.

3And He told them many things in parables, saying, “A farmer went out to sow his seed.

4And as he was sowing, some seed fell along the path, and the birds came and devoured it.

5Some fell on rocky ground, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly because the soil was shallow.

6But when the sun rose, the seedlings were scorched, and they withered because they had no root.

7Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the seedlings.

8Still other seed fell on good soil and produced a crop—a hundredfold, sixtyfold, or thirtyfold.

9He who has ears,let him hear.”

The Purpose of Jesus’ Parables

10Then the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Why do You speak to the people in parables?”

11He replied, “The knowledge of the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven has been given to you, but not to them.

12Whoever has will be given more, and he will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him.

13This is why I speak to them in parables: ‘Though seeing, they do not see;though hearing, they do not hear or understand.’

14In them the prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled: ‘You will be ever hearing but never understanding;you will be ever seeing but never perceiving.

15For this people’s heart has grown callous;they hardly hear with their ears, and they have closed their eyes.Otherwise they might see with their eyes,hear with their ears, understand with their hearts,and turn, and I would heal them.’

16But blessed are your eyes because they see, and your ears because they hear.

17For truly I tell you, many prophets and righteous men longed to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.

The Parable of the Sower Explained

18Consider, then, the parable of the sower:

19When anyone hears the message of the kingdom but does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in his heart. This is the seed sownalong the path.

20The seed sown on rocky ground is the one who hears the word and at once receives it with joy.

21But since he has no root, he remains for only a season. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, he quickly falls away.

22The seed sown among the thorns is the one who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful.

23But the seed sown on good soil is the one who hears the word and understands it. He indeed bears fruit and produces a crop—a hundredfold, sixtyfold, or thirtyfold.”

The Parable of the Weeds

24Jesus put before them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field.

25But while everyone was asleep, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat, and slipped away.

26When the wheat sprouted and bore grain, then the weeds also appeared.

27The owner’s servants came to him and said, ‘Sir, didn’t you sow good seed in your field? Where then did the weeds come from?’

28‘An enemy did this,’ he replied. So the servants asked him, ‘Do you want us to go and pull them up?’

29‘No,’ he said, ‘if you pull the weeds now, you might uproot the wheat with them.

30Let both grow together until the harvest. At that time I will tell the harvesters: First collect the weeds and tie them in bundles to be burned; then gather the wheat into my barn.’”

The Parable of the Mustard Seed

31He put before them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed that a man took and planted in his field.

32Although it is the smallest of all seeds, yet it grows into the largest of garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and nest in its branches.”

The Parable of the Leaven

33He told them still another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like leaven that a woman took and mixed into three measures of flour, until all of it was leavened.”

I Will Open My Mouth in Parables

34Jesus spoke all these things to the crowds in parables. He did not tell them anything without using a parable.

35So was fulfilled what was spoken through the prophet: “I will open My mouth in parables;I will utter things hidden since the foundation of the world.”

The Parable of the Weeds Explained

36Then Jesus dismissed the crowds and went into the house. His disciples came to Him and said, “Explain to us the parable of the weeds in the field.”

37He replied, “The One who sows the good seed is the Son of Man.

38The field is the world, and the good seed represents the sons of the kingdom. The weeds are the sons of the evil one,

39and the enemy who sows them is the devil. The harvest is the end of the age, and the harvesters are angels.

40As the weeds are collected and burned in the fire, so will it be at the end of the age.

41The Son of Man will send out His angels, and they will weed out of His kingdom every cause of sin and all who practice lawlessness.

42And they will throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

43Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. He who has ears, let him hear.

The Parables of the Treasure and the Pearl

44The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and in his joy he went and sold all he had and bought that field.

45Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls.

46When he found one very precious pearl, he went away and sold all he had and bought it.

The Parable of the Net

47Once again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net that was cast into the sea and caught all kinds of fish.

48When it was full, the men pulled it ashore. Then they sat down and sorted the good fish into containers, but threw the bad away.

49So will it be at the end of the age: The angels will come and separate the wicked from the righteous

50and throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

51Have you understood all these things?” “Yes,” they answered.

52Then He told them, “For this reason, every scribe who has been discipled in the kingdom of heaven is like a homeowner who brings out of his storeroom new treasures as well as old.”

The Rejection at Nazareth

53When Jesus had finished these parables, He withdrew from that place.

54Coming to His hometown, He taught the people in their synagogue, and they were astonished. “Where did this man get such wisdom and miraculous powers?” they asked.

55“Isn’t this the carpenter’s son? Isn’t His mother’s name Mary, and aren’t His brothers James, Joseph,Simon, and Judas?

56Aren’t all His sisters with us as well? Where then did this man get all these things?”

57And they took offense at Him. But Jesus said to them, “Only in his hometown and in his own household is a prophet without honor.”

58And He did not do many miracles there, because of their unbelief.

1Hôm ấy, Đức Giê-su từ trong nhà đi ra ngồi ở ven Biển Hồ.

2Dân chúng tụ họp bên Người rất đông, nên Người phải xuống thuyền mà ngồi, còn tất cả dân chúng thì đứng trên bờ.

3Người nói : “Người gieo giống đi ra gieo giống.

4Trong khi người ấy gieo, thì có những hạt rơi xuống vệ đường, chim chóc đến ăn mất.

5Có những hạt rơi trên nơi sỏi đá, chỗ đất không có nhiều ; nó mọc ngay, vì đất không sâu ;

6nhưng khi nắng lên, nó liền bị cháy, và vì thiếu rễ nên bị chết khô.

7Có những hạt rơi vào bụi gai, gai mọc lên làm nó chết nghẹt.

8Có những hạt lại rơi nhằm đất tốt, nên sinh hoa kết quả : hạt được gấp trăm, hạt được sáu chục, hạt được ba chục.

9Ai có tai thì nghe.”

10Các môn đệ đến gần hỏi Đức Giê-su rằng : “Sao Thầy lại dùng dụ ngôn mà nói với họ ?”

11Người đáp : “Bởi vì anh em thì được ơn hiểu biết các mầu nhiệm Nước Trời, còn họ thì không.

12Ai đã có thì được cho thêm, và sẽ có dư thừa ; còn ai không có, thì ngay cái đang có, cũng sẽ bị lấy mất.

13Bởi thế, nếu Thầy dùng dụ ngôn mà nói với họ, là vì họ nhìn mà không nhìn, nghe mà không nghe không hiểu.

14Thế là đối với họ đã ứng nghiệm lời sấm của ngôn sứ I-sai-a, rằng : *Các ngươi có lắng tai nghe cũng chẳng hiểu, có trố mắt nhìn cũng chẳng thấy ;*

15*vì lòng dân này đã ra chai đá : chúng đã bịt tai nhắm mắt, kẻo mắt chúng thấy, tai chúng nghe, và lòng hiểu được mà hoán cải, và rồi Ta sẽ chữa chúng cho lành.*

16“Còn anh em, mắt anh em thật có phúc vì được thấy, tai anh em thật có phúc, vì được nghe.

17Quả thế, Thầy bảo thật anh em, nhiều ngôn sứ và nhiều người công chính đã mong mỏi thấy điều anh em đang thấy, mà không được thấy, nghe điều anh em đang nghe, mà không được nghe.

18“Vậy anh em hãy nghe dụ ngôn người gieo giống.

19Hễ ai nghe lời rao giảng Nước Trời mà không hiểu, thì quỷ dữ đến cướp đi điều đã gieo trong lòng người ấy : đó là kẻ đã được gieo bên vệ đường.

20Còn kẻ được gieo trên nơi sỏi đá, đó là kẻ nghe Lời và liền vui vẻ đón nhận.

21Nhưng nó không đâm rễ mà là kẻ nhất thời : khi gặp gian nan hay bị ngược đãi vì Lời, nó vấp ngã ngay.

22Còn kẻ được gieo vào bụi gai, đó là kẻ nghe Lời, nhưng nỗi lo lắng sự đời, và bả vinh hoa phú quý bóp nghẹt, khiến Lời không sinh hoa kết quả gì.

23Còn kẻ được gieo trên đất tốt, đó là kẻ nghe Lời và hiểu, thì tất nhiên sinh hoa kết quả và làm ra, kẻ được gấp trăm, kẻ được sáu chục, kẻ được ba chục.”

24Đức Giê-su trình bày cho dân chúng nghe một dụ ngôn khác : “Nước Trời ví như chuyện người kia gieo giống tốt trong ruộng mình.

25Khi mọi người đang ngủ, thì kẻ thù của ông đến gieo thêm cỏ lùng vào giữa lúa, rồi đi mất.

26Khi lúa mọc lên và trổ bông, thì cỏ lùng cũng xuất hiện.

27Đầy tớ mới đến thưa chủ nhà rằng : ‘Thưa ông, không phải ông đã gieo giống tốt trong ruộng ông sao ? Thế thì cỏ lùng ở đâu mà ra vậy ?’

28Ông đáp : ‘Kẻ thù đã làm đó !’ Đầy tớ nói : ‘Vậy ông có muốn chúng tôi ra đi gom lại không ?’

29Ông đáp : ‘Đừng, sợ rằng khi gom cỏ lùng, các anh làm bật luôn rễ lúa.

30Cứ để cả hai cùng lớn lên cho tới mùa gặt. Đến ngày mùa, tôi sẽ bảo thợ gặt : hãy gom cỏ lùng lại, bó thành bó mà đốt đi, còn lúa, thì hãy thu vào kho lẫm cho tôi.’”

31Đức Giê-su còn trình bày cho họ nghe một dụ ngôn khác. Người nói : “Nước Trời cũng giống như chuyện hạt cải người nọ lấy gieo trong ruộng mình.

32Tuy nó là loại nhỏ nhất trong tất cả các hạt giống, nhưng khi lớn lên, thì lại là thứ lớn nhất ; nó trở thành cây, đến nỗi chim trời tới làm tổ trên cành được.”

33Người còn kể cho họ một dụ ngôn khác : “Nước Trời cũng giống như chuyện nắm men bà kia lấy vùi vào ba thúng bột, cho đến khi tất cả bột dậy men.”

34Tất cả các điều ấy, Đức Giê-su dùng dụ ngôn mà nói với đám đông ; và Người không nói gì với họ mà không dùng dụ ngôn,

35hầu ứng nghiệm lời sấm của ngôn sứ : *Mở miệng ra, tôi sẽ kể dụ ngôn, công bố những điều được giữ kín từ tạo thiên lập địa.*

36Bấy giờ, Đức Giê-su bỏ đám đông mà về nhà. Các môn đệ lại gần Người và thưa rằng : “Xin Thầy giải nghĩa dụ ngôn cỏ lùng trong ruộng cho chúng con nghe.”

37Người đáp : “Kẻ gieo hạt giống tốt là Con Người.

38Ruộng là thế gian. Hạt giống tốt, đó là con cái Nước Trời. Cỏ lùng là con cái Ác Thần.

39Kẻ thù đã gieo cỏ lùng là ma quỷ. Mùa gặt là ngày tận thế. Thợ gặt là các thiên thần.

40Vậy, như người ta nhặt cỏ lùng rồi lấy lửa đốt đi thế nào, thì đến ngày tận thế cũng sẽ xảy ra như vậy.

41Con Người sẽ sai các thiên thần của Người tập trung mọi kẻ làm gương mù gương xấu và mọi kẻ làm điều gian ác, mà tống ra khỏi Nước của Người,

42rồi quăng chúng vào lò lửa ; ở đó, chúng sẽ phải khóc lóc nghiến răng.

43Bấy giờ người công chính sẽ chói lọi như mặt trời, trong Nước của Cha họ. Ai có tai thì nghe.

44“Nước Trời giống như chuyện kho báu chôn giấu trong ruộng. Có người kia gặp được thì liền chôn giấu lại, rồi vui mừng đi bán tất cả những gì mình có mà mua thửa ruộng ấy.

45“Nước Trời lại cũng giống như chuyện một thương gia đi tìm ngọc đẹp.

46Tìm được một viên ngọc quý, ông ta ra đi, bán tất cả những gì mình có mà mua viên ngọc ấy.

47“Nước Trời lại còn giống như chuyện chiếc lưới thả xuống biển, gom được đủ thứ cá.

48Khi lưới đầy, người ta kéo lên bãi, rồi ngồi nhặt cá tốt cho vào giỏ, còn cá xấu thì vứt ra ngoài.

49Đến ngày tận thế, cũng sẽ xảy ra như vậy. Các thiên thần sẽ xuất hiện và tách biệt kẻ xấu ra khỏi hàng ngũ người công chính,

50rồi quăng chúng vào lò lửa. Ở đó, chúng sẽ phải khóc lóc nghiến răng.

51“Anh em có hiểu tất cả những điều ấy không ?” Họ đáp : “Thưa hiểu.”

52Người bảo họ : “Bởi vậy, bất cứ kinh sư nào đã được học hỏi về Nước Trời, thì cũng giống như chủ nhà kia lấy ra từ trong kho tàng của mình cả cái mới lẫn cái cũ.”

53Khi Đức Giê-su kể các dụ ngôn ấy xong, Người đi khỏi nơi đó.

54Người về quê, giảng dạy dân chúng trong hội đường của họ, khiến họ sửng sốt và nói : “Bởi đâu ông ta được khôn ngoan và làm được những phép lạ như thế ?

55Ông không phải là con bác thợ sao ? Mẹ của ông không phải là bà Ma-ri-a ; anh em của ông không phải là các ông Gia-cô-bê, Giô-xếp, Si-môn và Giu-đa sao ?

56Và chị em của ông không phải đều là bà con lối xóm với chúng ta sao ? Vậy bởi đâu ông ta được như thế ?”

57Và họ vấp ngã vì Người. Nhưng Đức Giê-su bảo họ : “Ngôn sứ có bị rẻ rúng, thì cũng chỉ là ở chính quê hương mình và trong gia đình mình mà thôi.”

58Người không làm nhiều phép lạ tại đó, vì họ không tin.
