Paul’s Journey to Jerusalem

1After we had torn ourselves away from them, we sailed directly to Cos, and the next day on to Rhodes, and from there to Patara.

2Finding a ship crossing over to Phoenicia, we boarded it and set sail.

3After sighting Cyprus and passing south of it, we sailed on to Syria and landed at Tyre, where the ship was to unload its cargo.

4We sought out the disciples in Tyre and stayed with them seven days. Through the Spirit they kept telling Paul not to go up to Jerusalem.

5But when our time there had ended, we set out on our journey. All the disciples, with their wives and children, accompanied us out of the city and knelt down on the beach to pray with us.

6And after we had said our farewells, we went aboard the ship, and they returned home.

7When we had finished our voyage from Tyre, we landed at Ptolemais, where we greeted the brothers and stayed with them for a day.

Paul Visits Philip the Evangelist

8Leaving the next day, we went on to Caesarea and stayed at the home of Philip the evangelist, who was one of the Seven.

9He had four unmarried daughters who prophesied.

10After we had been there several days, a prophet named Agabus came down from Judea.

11Coming over to us, he took Paul’s belt, bound his own feet and hands, and said, “The Holy Spirit says: ‘In this way the Jews of Jerusalem will bind the owner of this belt and hand him over to the Gentiles.’”

12When we heard this, we and the people there pleaded with Paul not to go up to Jerusalem.

13Then Paul answered, “Why are you weeping and breaking my heart? I am ready not only to be bound, but also to die in Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus.”

14When he would not be dissuaded, we quieted down and said, “The Lord’s will be done.”

15After these days, we packed up and went on to Jerusalem.

16Some of the disciples from Caesarea accompanied us, and they took us to stay at the home of Mnason the Cypriot, an early disciple.

Paul’s Arrival at Jerusalem

17When we arrived in Jerusalem, the brothers welcomed us joyfully.

18The next day Paul went in with us to see James, and all the elders were present.

19Paul greeted them and recounted one by one the things that God had done among the Gentiles through his ministry.

20When they heard this, they glorified God. Then they said to Paul, “You see, brother, how many thousands of Jews have believed, and all of them are zealous for the law.

21But they are under the impression that you teach all the Jews who live among the Gentiles to forsake Moses, telling them not to circumcise their children or observe our customs.

22What then should we do? They will certainly hear that you have come.

23Therefore do what we advise you. There are four men with us who have taken a vow.

24Take these men, purify yourself along with them, and pay their expenses so they can have their heads shaved. Then everyone will know that there is no truth to these rumors about you, but that you also live in obedience to the law.

25As for the Gentile believers, we have written to them our decision that they must abstain from food sacrificed to idols, from blood, from the meat of strangled animals, and from sexual immorality.”

26So the next day Paul took the men and purified himself along with them. Then he entered the temple to give notice of the date when their purification would be complete and the offering would be made for each of them.

Paul Seized at the Temple

27When the seven days were almost over, some Jews from the province of Asiasaw Paul at the temple. They stirred up the whole crowd and seized him,

28crying out, “Men of Israel, help us! This is the man who teaches everyone everywhere against our people and against our law and against this place. Furthermore, he has brought Greeks into the temple and defiled this holy place.”

29For they had previously seen Trophimus the Ephesian with him in the city, and they assumed that Paul had brought him into the temple.

30The whole city was stirred up, and the people rushed together. They seized Paul and dragged him out of the temple, and at once the gates were shut.

31While they were trying to kill him, the commander of the Roman regimentreceived a report that all Jerusalem was in turmoil.

32Immediately he took some soldiers and centurions and ran down to the crowd. When the people saw the commander and the soldiers, they stopped beating Paul.

33The commander came up and arrested Paul, ordering that he be bound with two chains. Then he asked who he was and what he had done.

34Some in the crowd were shouting one thing, and some another. And since the commander could not get at the truth because of the uproar, he ordered that Paul be brought into the barracks.

35When Paul reached the steps, he had to be carried by the soldiers because of the violence of the mob.

36For the crowd that followed him kept shouting, “Away with him!”

Paul Addresses the Crowd

37As they were about to take Paul into the barracks, he asked the commander, “May I say something to you?” “Do you speak Greek?” he replied.

38“Aren’t you the Egyptian who incited a rebellion some time ago and led four thousand members of the Assassins into the wilderness?”

39But Paul answered, “I am a Jew from Tarsus in Cilicia, a citizen of no ordinary city. Now I beg you to allow me to speak to the people.”

40Having received permission, Paul stood on the steps and motioned to the crowd. A great hush came over the crowd, and he addressed them in Hebrew:

1Chúng ta phân rẽ các người đó xong, bèn xuống tàu, đi thẳng đến thành Cốt, ngày hôm sau tới thành Rô-đơ, và từ đó đến thành Ba-ta-ra.

2ỳ đó gặp một chiếc tàu, dương buồm chạy qua xứ Phê-ni-xi; chúng ta bèn xuống đi.

3Thấy đảo Chíp-rơ, thì tránh bên hữu, cứ theo đường đến xứ Sy-ri, đậu tại thành Ty-rơ, vì tàu phải cất hàng hóa tại đó.

4Chúng ta đi tìm được các môn đồ rồi, bèn ở lại với họ bảy ngày. Các môn đồ chịu Đức Thánh Linh cảm động, dặn Phao-lô chớ lên thành Giê-ru-sa-lem.

5Nhưng, khi kỳ tạm trú chúng ta đã qua, thì lại đi; cả môn đồ với vợ con đều tiễn chúng ta ra đến ngoài thành, ai nấy đều quì xuống trên bờ, cùng nhau cầu nguyện,

6rồi từ giã nhau. Đoạn, chúng ta xuống tàu; môn đồ trở về nhà.

7Còn chúng ta đi hết đường thủy, thì ở thành Ty-rơ sang thành Bê-tô-lê-mai, chào thăm anh em và ở lại với họ một ngày.

8Ngày mai, chúng ta ở nơi đó đi, đến thành Sê-sa-rê; vào nhà Phi-líp, là người giảng Tin Lành, một trong bảy thầy phó tế, rồi ở lại đó.

9Người có bốn con gái đồng trinh hay nói tiên tri.

10Chúng ta ở đó đã mấy ngày, có một người tiên tri tên là A-ga-bút ở xứ Giu-đê xuống.

11Người đến thăm chúng ta, rồi lấy dây lưng của Phao-lô trói chân tay mình, mà nói rằng: Nầy là lời Đức Thánh-Linh phán: Tại thành Giê-ru-sa-lem, dân Giu-đa sẽ trói người có dây lưng nầy như vậy, mà nộp trong tay người ngoại đạo.

12Khi đã nghe bấy nhiêu lời, thì các tín đồ nơi đó và chúng ta đều xin Phao-lô đừng lên thành Giê-ru-sa-lem.

13Nhưng người trả lời rằng: Anh em làm chi mà khóc lóc cho nao lòng tôi? Vì phần tôi sẵn lòng chẳng những để bị trói thôi, lại cũng sẵn lòng vì danh Đức Chúa Jêsus chịu chết tại thành Giê-ru-sa-lem nữa.

14Người chẳng khứng chịu khuyên dỗ, thì chúng ta không ép nữa, mà nói rằng: Xin cho ý muốn của Chúa được nên!

15Qua những ngày đó, chúng ta sắm sửa, rồi lên thành Giê-ru-sa-lem.

16Có mấy người môn đồ ở thành Sê-sa-rê cũng đến đó với chúng ta, dẫn chúng ta vào nhà tên Ma-na-sôn kia, quê ở Chíp-rơ, là một môn đồ lâu nay, và người cho chúng ta trọ tại nhà mình.

17Chúng ta đến thành Giê-ru-sa-lem, thì anh em vui mừng tiếp rước.

18Bữa sau, Phao-lô đi với chúng ta tới nhà Gia-cơ; có hết thảy các trưởng lão nhóm họp tại đó.

19Phao-lô chào mừng các người đó rồi, bèn thuật lại từng điều mọi sự Đức Chúa Trời đã bởi chức vụ mình làm ra trong người ngoại.

20Các người ấy nghe vậy thì ngợi khen Đức Chúa Trời. Đoạn, nói cùng người rằng: Anh ơi, anh thấy biết mấy vạn người Giu-đa đã tin, và hết thảy đều sốt sắng về luật pháp.

21Vả, chúng đã hay rằng anh dạy các người Giu-đa ở trong các dân ngoại rằng phải từ bỏ Môi-se, chớ nên làm phép cắt bì cho con mình, hay là ăn ở theo thói tục mình nữa.

22Vậy, khá lo liệu làm sao? Chắc rằng dân chúng sẽ nhóm lại; vì hẳn sẽ biết rằng anh đã tới rồi.

23Nên, hãy làm theo như chúng tôi sẽ nói cho anh: Chúng tôi đây có bốn người đều mắc lời thề;

24hãy đem bốn người đó cùng đi, làm lễ tinh sạch cho mình luôn với họ, và hãy chịu tiền họ phải trả để cạo đầu. Vậy thì ai nấy sẽ biết mọi tin đồn về anh đều chẳng thật, song rõ anh cũng ăn ở theo luật pháp vậy.

25Còn người ngoại đã tin, chúng tôi có viết thơ cho họ về điều chúng tôi đã định: là chỉ phải kiêng ăn của cúng thần tượng, huyết và thú vật chết ngột, cùng chớ gian dâm.

26Phao-lô bèn đem bốn người cùng đi, vừa đến ngày sau, làm lễ tinh sạch cùng họ, rồi vào trong đền thờ, đặng tỏ ra ngày nào kỳ tinh sạch sẽ trọn, và dâng của lễ về mỗi người trong bọn mình.

27Khi bảy ngày gần trọn, thì các người Giu-đa, quê A-si, thấy Phao-lô trong đền thờ, bèn xui cả đoàn dân dấy loạn, rồi bắt người,

28mà kêu lên rằng: Hỡi các người Y-sơ-ra-ên, hãy đến giúp với! Kìa, người nầy giảng dạy khắp thiên hạ, nghịch cùng dân, nghịch cùng luật pháp, và nghịch cùng chốn nầy nữa, đến đỗi hắn dẫn người Gờ-réc vào trong đền thờ, và làm cho nơi thánh nầy bị ô uế.

29Số là, chúng trước đã thấy Trô-phim, người Ê-phê-sô, ở với Phao-lô tại trong thành phố, nên ngờ rằng Phao-lô đã dẫn người vào đền thờ.

30Cả thành đều xôn xao, dân chúng chạy nhóm lại đoàn đông, bắt Phao-lô, kéo ra khỏi đền thờ, tức thì các cửa đều đóng lại.

31Chúng đang tìm phương giết người, thì tiếng đồn đến quan quản cơ rằng cả thành Giê-ru-sa-lem đều xôn xao.

32Người lập tức bắt quân lính và cai đội kéo đến nơi chúng. Vừa thấy quản cơ và quân lính thì chúng thôi, không đánh Phao-lô nữa.

33Quản cơ bèn tới gần, bắt người rồi truyền lấy hai cái xích xích lại; đoạn, hỏi người là ai, và đã làm việc gì.

34Trong đoàn dân, kẻ reo lên thể nầy, người la lên thể khác; nhân sự rối loạn, người không biết được chắc, nên dạy điệu về đồn.

35Lúc Phao-lô bước lên thềm, quân lính phải khiêng người đi, bởi cớ đoàn dân hung bạo lắm.

36Vì có đám dân theo sau đông mà kêu rằng: Hãy giết đi!

37Lúc Phao-lô vào đồn, thì nói với quản cơ rằng: Tôi có phép nói với ông đôi điều chăng? Quản cơ trả lời rằng: Ngươi biết nói tiếng Gờ-réc sao?

38Vậy thì ngươi hẳn chẳng phải là người Ê-díp-tô kia, ngày trước đã gây loạn, kéo bốn ngàn kẻ cướp vào nơi đồng vắng hay sao?

39Phao-lô trả lời rằng: Tôi là người Giu-đa, vốn ở thành Tạt-sơ, công dân của một thành trong xứ Si-li-si tức là thành có danh tiếng; xin hãy cho phép tôi nói với chúng dân.

40Được phép rồi, Phao-lô đứng trên thềm, giơ tay ra dấu cho dân. Đâu đó yên lặng, người bèn nói tiếng Hê-bơ-rơ mà rằng:
