1Israel stayed in Shittim; and the people began to play the prostitute with the daughters of Moab;

2for they called the people to the sacrifices of their gods. The people ate and bowed down to their gods.

3Israel joined himself to Baal Peor, and the LORD’s anger burned against Israel.

4The LORD said to Moses, “Take all the chiefs of the people, and hang them up to the LORD before the sun, that the fierce anger of the LORD may turn away from Israel.”

5Moses said to the judges of Israel, “Everyone kill his men who have joined themselves to Baal Peor.”

6Behold, one of the children of Israel came and brought to his brothers a Midianite woman in the sight of Moses, and in the sight of all the congregation of the children of Israel, while they were weeping at the door of the Tent of Meeting.

7When Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose up from the middle of the congregation, and took a spear in his hand.

8He went after the man of Israel into the pavilion, and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel, and the woman through her body. So the plague was stopped among the children of Israel.

9Those who died by the plague were twenty-four thousand.

10The LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

11“Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, has turned my wrath away from the children of Israel, in that he was jealous with my jealousy among them, so that I didn’t consume the children of Israel in my jealousy.

12Therefore say, ‘Behold, I give to him my covenant of peace.

13It shall be to him, and to his offspring after him, the covenant of an everlasting priesthood, because he was jealous for his God, and made atonement for the children of Israel.’”

14Now the name of the man of Israel that was slain, who was slain with the Midianite woman, was Zimri, the son of Salu, a prince of a fathers’ house among the Simeonites.

15The name of the Midianite woman who was slain was Cozbi, the daughter of Zur. He was head of the people of a fathers’ house in Midian.

16The LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

17“Harass the Midianites, and strike them;

18for they harassed you with their wiles, wherein they have deceived you in the matter of Peor, and in the incident regarding Cozbi, the daughter of the prince of Midian, their sister, who was slain on the day of the plague in the matter of Peor.”

1Khi trú ngụ tại Sít-tim, dân Ít-ra-en bắt đầu dâm đãng với gái Mô-áp.

2Bọn này rủ rê dân thờ cúng các thần của chúng ; dân đã ăn uống và thờ lạy các thần của chúng.

4ĐỨC CHÚA phán với ông Mô-sê : “Hãy đem tất cả các thủ lãnh của dân ra ngoài nắng mà treo lên trước mặt ĐỨC CHÚA, để ĐỨC CHÚA nguôi cơn thịnh nộ với Ít-ra-en.”

5Ông Mô-sê nói với các thẩm phán : “Mỗi người trong anh em hãy giết những kẻ đã bán mình cho Ba-an Pơ-o.”

6Bỗng một người trong số con cái Ít-ra-en xuất hiện, dẫn theo một gái Ma-đi-an về nhà, ngay trước mắt ông Mô-sê và toàn thể cộng đồng con cái Ít-ra-en lúc ấy đang khóc lóc tại cửa Lều Hội Ngộ.

7Thấy vậy, ông Pin-khát, con của E-la-da, cháu tư tế A-ha-ron, liền đứng lên giữa cộng đồng, cầm một chiếc giáo trong tay,

8đi theo người Ít-ra-en vào tận phòng hắn và đâm cả hai người, gã đàn ông Ít-ra-en và mụ đàn bà kia ngay giữa bụng. Thế là chấm dứt tai ương đe doạ con cái Ít-ra-en.

9Số người chết trong tai ương đó, là 24.000.

10ĐỨC CHÚA phán bảo ông Mô-sê rằng :

11“Pin-khát con của E-la-da, cháu tư tế A-ha-ron, đã ngăn Ta trút cơn phẫn nộ xuống con cái Ít-ra-en, khi nó cũng nổi ghen như Ta, chống lại bọn người kia. Vì vậy Ta không tiêu diệt con cái Ít-ra-en trong cơn ghen của Ta.

12Cho nên, ngươi hãy bảo nó : Này, Ta ban cho nó giao ước bình an của Ta.

13Đối với nó, cũng như con cháu nó sau này, đó sẽ là giao ước bảo đảm cho nó chức tư tế đời đời, bởi vì nó đã nổi ghen cho Thiên Chúa của nó, và làm cho con cái Ít-ra-en được xá tội.”

14Người Ít-ra-en đã bị đâm cùng với người đàn bà Ma-đi-an tên là Dim-ri, con của Xa-lu, đứng đầu một gia tộc thuộc Si-mê-ôn.

15Và người đàn bà Ma-đi-an bị đâm tên là Cót-bi, con gái ông Xua, ông này là thủ lãnh các dòng họ một gia tộc Ma-đi-an.

16ĐỨC CHÚA phán bảo ông Mô-sê rằng :

17“Hãy tấn công quân Ma-đi-an và giết chúng đi.

18Vì chúng đã tấn công các ngươi, và dùng mưu mô quỷ quyệt đối với các ngươi trong vụ Pơ-o và vụ Cót-bi, con gái một thủ lãnh Ma-đi-an, chị em của chúng, kẻ đã bị đâm chết ngày xảy ra tai ương trong vụ Pơ-o.”
