Các Đại Tộc Phía Đông Trở Về Xứ Cũ

1Giô-suê triệu tập các đại tộc Ru-bên, Gát, và nửa đại tộc Ma-na-se.

2Ông nói: “Anh em đã tuân lệnh Môi-se, đầy tớ Chúa và vâng lời tôi.

3Anh em đã không bỏ rơi bà con mình tức các đại tộc khác trong một thời gian dài đằng đẵng. Như vậy anh em đã nghiêm chỉnh tuân hành mệnh lệnh của chính Chúa Hằng Hữu, Đức Chúa Trời mình.

4Ngày nay, Chúa Hằng Hữu, Đức Chúa Trời của anh em, cho các đại tộc kia nghỉ ngơi như Ngài đã hứa; nên bây giờ anh em được về cùng gia đình, đất đai mình ở bên kia Sông Giô-đan, nơi Môi-se, đầy tớ Chúa cấp cho anh em.

5Nhưng anh em phải luôn luôn hết lòng tuân giữ mệnh lệnh và luật lệ Môi-se đã truyền, yêu kính Chúa Hằng Hữu, Đức Chúa Trời của anh em, theo đúng đường lối Ngài, khắng khít với Ngài, đem hết tâm hồn phụng sự Ngài.”

6Rồi Giô-suê chúc phước lành cho họ, và tiễn họ về trại.

7Trước kia, Môi-se cấp đất Ba-san cho nửa đại tộc Ma-na-se. (Nửa đại tộc còn lại được Giô-suê chia cho đất bên phía tây Giô-đan). Trong lúc tiễn đưa, sau khi chúc phước lành xong,

8Giô-suê tiếp: “Anh em ra về với bao nhiêu của cải trong tay: Súc vật, vàng, bạc, đồng, sắt, áo xống đầy dẫy. Xin nhớ chia sẻ chiến lợi phẩm với các anh em mình.”

9Như thế, đại tộc Ru-bên, Gát, và nửa đại tộc Ma-na-se từ giã Si-lô trong đất Ca-na-an để về Ga-la-át là đất mà Chúa Hằng Hữu cho họ theo lệnh Môi-se.

Các Đại Tộc Phía Đông Lập Bàn Thờ

10Khi đến vùng Giô-đan, còn thuộc về Ca-na-an, đại tộc Ru-bên, Gát, và nửa đại tộc Ma-na-se lập một bàn thờ rất lớn gần sông Giô-đan.

11Người Ít-ra-ên hay tin đại tộc Ru-bên, Gát, và nửa đại tộc Ma-na-se đã lập một bàn thờ ở phía tây của Sông Giô-đan còn thuộc Ca-na-an, ngay sát nơi cư trú của người Ít-ra-ên.

12Nghe tin này, toàn thể hội chúng Ít-ra-ên liền họp nhau tại Si-lô và định đi đánh hai đại tộc rưỡi kia.

13Nhưng, trước tiên họ phái Phi-nê-a con trai Thầy Tế lễ Ê-lê-a-sa đến Ga-la-át để nói chuyện với đại tộc Ru-bên, Gát, và nửa đại tộc Ma-na-se.

14Phi-nê-a dẫn đầu một phái đoàn gồm mười nhà lãnh đạo, mỗi người đại diện một đại tộc Ít-ra-ên; họ đều thuộc hàng trưởng tộc.

15Khi phái đoàn đến Ga-la-át, họ chất vấn người thuộc đại tộc Ru-bên, Gát, và nửa đại tộc Ma-na-se:

16“Toàn thể dân của Chúa Hằng Hữu muốn biết tại sao anh em dám phạm tội với Đức Chúa Trời của Ít-ra-ên. Từ bỏ Chúa Hằng Hữu, xây một bàn thờ để tỏ lòng phản nghịch Ngài.

17Tội ác chúng ta gây ra tại Phê-ô còn chưa đủ sao? Tội ác đã gây tai họa cho cả hội chúng của Chúa Hằng Hữu đến nay vẫn chưa rửa sạch, mặc dù chúng ta đã chịu tai họa nặng nề.

18Bây giờ anh em còn gây thêm tội, từ bỏ Chúa Hằng Hữu. Nếu anh em phản nghịch Chúa Hằng Hữu hôm nay, ngày mai Ngài sẽ nổi giận với toàn dân Ít-ra-ên.

19Nếu đất của anh em không tinh sạch, thì dọn qua ở với chúng tôi trong đất của Chúa Hằng Hữu, nơi có Đền Tạm Ngài, chúng tôi sẽ chia đất cho anh em. Chỉ xin anh em đừng phản nghịch Chúa Hằng Hữu, làm cho chúng tôi cũng ra người phản nghịch. Xin đừng xây một bàn thờ khác với bàn thờ Chúa Hằng Hữu, Đức Chúa Trời chúng ta.

20Trường hợp A-can, con Xê-rách phạm luật về các vật phải bị hủy diệt đã làm cho toàn dân phải chịu tai họa do cơn giận của Chúa Hằng Hữu. A-can đâu chỉ bị tiêu diệt một mình.”

21Người Ru-bên, Gát, và Ma-na-se đáp lời các nhà lãnh đạo Ít-ra-ên:

22“Lạy Chúa Hằng Hữu, Đức Chúa Trời Toàn Năng! Đức Chúa Trời Toàn Năng biết rõ! Xin Ít-ra-ên cũng biết cho.

23Nếu chúng tôi xây bàn thờ vì phản nghịch, vì lòng bất trung với Chúa Hằng Hữu, thì xin Ngài đừng tha chúng tôi. Nếu chúng tôi xây bàn thờ để dâng tế lễ thiêu, lễ vật ngũ cốc, tế lễ cảm tạ, thì xin chính Chúa Hằng Hữu trừng phạt.

24Sự thật là chúng tôi đã làm như thế chỉ vì lo sợ cho tương lai, một ngày nào con cháu của anh em sẽ bảo con cháu chúng tôi: ‘Các người đâu có liên hệ gì với Chúa Hằng Hữu, Đức Chúa Trời của Ít-ra-ên?

25Chúa Hằng Hữu đã đặt sông Giô-đan làm biên giới ngăn cách đôi đường, các người chẳng có phần gì nơi Chúa Hằng Hữu cả.’ Và như thế, con cháu anh em sẽ làm cho con cháu chúng tôi thôi phụng thờ Chúa Hằng Hữu.

26Vì thế, chúng tôi mới bảo nhau xây một bàn thờ, không phải để dâng tế lễ thiêu hay lễ vật gì khác,

27nhưng để chứng minh cho đôi bên và cho hàng con cháu, là chúng tôi có phụng thờ Chúa Hằng Hữu, có dâng trước mặt Ngài tế lễ thiêu, tế lễ cảm tạ, và các lễ vật khác, để con cháu anh em không nói được rằng con cháu chúng tôi không có phần gì nơi Chúa Hằng Hữu.

28Vậy nếu có ai nói với chúng tôi hay con cháu chúng tôi như thế, con cháu chúng tôi sẽ trả lời: ‘Đây, hãy xem bàn thờ cha ông chúng tôi đã xây, nó giống hệt bàn thờ của Chúa Hằng Hữu. Bàn thờ này không dùng để dâng tế lễ thiêu hay lễ vật gì khác, nhưng để chứng tỏ mối quan hệ giữa đôi bên.’

29Tuyệt nhiên không có việc chúng tôi phản nghịch Chúa Hằng Hữu, từ bỏ Ngài, xây một bàn thờ để dâng tế lễ thiêu, ngũ cốc, hay các lễ vật khác ngoài bàn thờ Chúa Hằng Hữu, Đức Chúa Trời chúng ta, trước Đền Tạm.”

30Thầy Tế lễ Phi-nê-a và các nhà lãnh đạo Ít-ra-ên rất hài lòng khi nghe xong lời giải thích của người Ru-bên, Gát và Ma-na-se.

31Phi-nê-a con trai Ê-lê-a-sa đáp lời họ như sau: “Chúng ta biết chắc có Chúa Hằng Hữu ở giữa chúng ta hôm nay, vì anh em đã không phạm tội với Ngài, nhưng đã cứu Ít-ra-ên khỏi bị Chúa Hằng Hữu trừng phạt.”

32Sau đó, Phi-nê-a, con Thầy Tế lễ Ê-lê-a-sa và các nhà lãnh đạo Ít-ra-ên từ giã người Ru-bên, Gát, và Ma-na-se, từ Ga-la-át trở về Ca-na-an để phúc trình.

33Nghe lời phúc trình, người Ít-ra-ên rất thỏa lòng về mọi việc, dâng tiếng ngợi tôn Đức Chúa Trời. Họ không còn nói tới việc đi đánh Ru-bên và Gát nữa.

34Người Ru-bên và Gát gọi bàn thờ này là “Bàn Thờ Minh Chứng” vì nó chứng minh cho đôi bên rằng chỉ có Chúa Hằng Hữu là Đức Chúa Trời.

1Then Joshua called the Reubenites, and the Gadites, and the half tribe of Manasseh,

2And said unto them, Ye have kept all that Moses the servant of the LORD commanded you, and have obeyed my voice in all that I commanded you:

3Ye have not left your brethren these many days unto this day, but have kept the charge of the commandment of the LORD your God.

4And now the LORD your God hath given rest unto your brethren, as he promised them: therefore now return ye, and get you unto your tents, and unto the land of your possession, which Moses the servant of the LORD gave you on the other side Jordan.

5But take diligent heed to do the commandment and the law, which Moses the servant of the LORD charged you, to love the LORD your God, and to walk in all his ways, and to keep his commandments, and to cleave unto him, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul.

6So Joshua blessed them, and sent them away: and they went unto their tents.

7¶ Now to the one half of the tribe of Manasseh Moses had given possession in Bashan: but unto the other half thereof gave Joshua among their brethren on this side Jordan westward. And when Joshua sent them away also unto their tents, then he blessed them,

8And he spake unto them, saying, Return with much riches unto your tents, and with very much cattle, with silver, and with gold, and with brass, and with iron, and with very much raiment: divide the spoil of your enemies with your brethren.

9¶ And the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh returned, and departed from the children of Israel out of Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan, to go unto the country of Gilead, to the land of their possession, whereof they were possessed, according to the word of the LORD by the hand of Moses.

10¶ And when they came unto the borders of Jordan, that are in the land of Canaan, the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh built there an altar by Jordan, a great altar to see to.

11¶ And the children of Israel heard say, Behold, the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh have built an altar over against the land of Canaan, in the borders of Jordan, at the passage of the children of Israel.

12And when the children of Israel heard of it, the whole congregation of the children of Israel gathered themselves together at Shiloh, to go up to war against them.

13And the children of Israel sent unto the children of Reuben, and to the children of Gad, and to the half tribe of Manasseh, into the land of Gilead, Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest,

14And with him ten princes, of each chief house a prince throughout all the tribes of Israel; and each one was an head of the house of their fathers among the thousands of Israel.

15¶ And they came unto the children of Reuben, and to the children of Gad, and to the half tribe of Manasseh, unto the land of Gilead, and they spake with them, saying,

16Thus saith the whole congregation of the LORD, What trespass is this that ye have committed against the God of Israel, to turn away this day from following the LORD, in that ye have builded you an altar, that ye might rebel this day against the LORD?

17Is the iniquity of Peor too little for us, from which we are not cleansed until this day, although there was a plague in the congregation of the LORD,

18But that ye must turn away this day from following the LORD? and it will be, seeing ye rebel to day against the LORD, that to morrow he will be wroth with the whole congregation of Israel.

19Notwithstanding, if the land of your possession be unclean, then pass ye over unto the land of the possession of the LORD, wherein the LORD’s tabernacle dwelleth, and take possession among us: but rebel not against the LORD, nor rebel against us, in building you an altar beside the altar of the LORD our God.

20Did not Achan the son of Zerah commit a trespass in the accursed thing, and wrath fell on all the congregation of Israel? and that man perished not alone in his iniquity.

21¶ Then the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh answered, and said unto the heads of the thousands of Israel,

22The LORD God of gods, the LORD God of gods, he knoweth, and Israel he shall know; if it be in rebellion, or if in transgression against the LORD, (save us not this day,)

23That we have built us an altar to turn from following the LORD, or if to offer thereon burnt offering or meat offering, or if to offer peace offerings thereon, let the LORD himself require it;

24And if we have not rather done it for fear of this thing, saying, In time to come your children might speak unto our children, saying, What have ye to do with the LORD God of Israel?

25For the LORD hath made Jordan a border between us and you, ye children of Reuben and children of Gad; ye have no part in the LORD: so shall your children make our children cease from fearing the LORD.

26Therefore we said, Let us now prepare to build us an altar, not for burnt offering, nor for sacrifice:

27But that it may be a witness between us, and you, and our generations after us, that we might do the service of the LORD before him with our burnt offerings, and with our sacrifices, and with our peace offerings; that your children may not say to our children in time to come, Ye have no part in the LORD.

28Therefore said we, that it shall be, when they should so say to us or to our generations in time to come, that we may say again, Behold the pattern of the altar of the LORD, which our fathers made, not for burnt offerings, nor for sacrifices; but it is a witness between us and you.

29God forbid that we should rebel against the LORD, and turn this day from following the LORD, to build an altar for burnt offerings, for meat offerings, or for sacrifices, beside the altar of the LORD our God that is before his tabernacle.

30¶ And when Phinehas the priest, and the princes of the congregation and heads of the thousands of Israel which were with him, heard the words that the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the children of Manasseh spake, it pleased them.

31And Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest said unto the children of Reuben, and to the children of Gad, and to the children of Manasseh, This day we perceive that the LORD is among us, because ye have not committed this trespass against the LORD: now ye have delivered the children of Israel out of the hand of the LORD.

32¶ And Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, and the princes, returned from the children of Reuben, and from the children of Gad, out of the land of Gilead, unto the land of Canaan, to the children of Israel, and brought them word again.

33And the thing pleased the children of Israel; and the children of Israel blessed God, and did not intend to go up against them in battle, to destroy the land wherein the children of Reuben and Gad dwelt.

34And the children of Reuben and the children of Gad called the altar Ed: for it shall be a witness between us that the LORD is God.
