1And it came to pass after this, that the king of the children of Ammon died, and Hanon his son reigned in his stead.

2And David said: I Will shew kindness to Hanon the son of Daas, as his father shewed kindness to me. So David sent his servants to comfort him for the death of his father. But when the servants of David were come into the land of the children of Ammon,

3The princes of the children of Ammon said to Hanon their lord: Thinkest thou that for the honour of thy father, David hath sent comforters to thee, and hath not David rather sent his servants to thee to search, and spy into the city, and overthrow it?

4Wherefore Hanon took the servants of David, and shaved off the one half of their beards, and cut away half of their garments even to the buttocks, and sent them away.

5When this was told David, he sent to meet them: for the men were sadly put to confusion, and David commanded them, saying: Stay at Jericho, till your beards be grown, and then return.

6And the children of Ammon seeing that they had done an injury to David, Bent and hired the Syrians of Rohob, and the Syrians of Soba, twenty thousand footmen, and of the king of Maacha a thousand men, and of Istob twelve thousand men.

7And when David heard this, he sent Joab and the whole army of warriors.

8And the children of Ammon came out, and set their men in array at the entering in of the gate: but the Syrians of Soba, and of Rohob, and of Istob, and of Maacha were by themselves in the field.

9Then Joab seeing that the battle was prepared against him, both before and behind, chose of all the choice men of Israel, and put them in array against the Syrians:

10And the rest of the people he delivered to Abisai his brother, who set them in array against the children of Ammon.

11And Joab said: If the Syrians are too strong for me, then thou shalt help me: but if the children of Ammon are too strong for thee, then I will help thee.

12Be of good courage, and let us fight for our people, and for the city of our God: and the Lord will do what is good in his sight.

13And Joab and the people that were with him, began to fight against the Syrians: and they immediately fled before him.

14And the children of Ammon seeing that the Syrians were fled, they fled also before Abisai, and entered into the city: and Joab returned from the children of Ammon, and came to Jerusalem.

15Then the Syrians seeing that they had fallen before Israel, gathered themselves together.

16And Adarezer sent and fetched the Syrians, that were beyond the river, and brought over their army: and Sobach, the captain of the host of Adarezer, was their general.

17And when this was told David, he gathered all Israel together, and passed over the Jordan, and came to Helam: and the Syrians set themselves in array against David, and fought against him.

18And the Syrians fled before Israel, and David slew of the Syrians the men of seven hundred chariots, and forty thousand horsemen: and smote Sobach the captain of the army, who presently died.

19And all the kings that were auxiliaries of Adarezer, seeing themselves overcome by Israel, were afraid and fled away, eight and fifty thousand men before Israel. And they made peace with Israel: and served them, and all the Syrians were afraid to help the children of Ammon any more.

3thì các tướng lãnh của con cái Am-mon thưa với vua Kha-nun, chúa thượng của chúng : “Ngài tưởng là Đa-vít kính trọng vua cha khi sai người đến chia buồn với ngài sao ? Chẳng phải Đa-vít đã sai bề tôi đến với ngài là để quan sát thành, dò thám và lật đổ thành sao ?”

4Vua Kha-nun liền bắt bề tôi vua Đa-vít, cạo một nửa râu và cắt một nửa áo của họ cho đến mông, rồi thả về.

5Người ta báo tin cho vua Đa-vít, vua sai người đi đón họ, vì những người ấy nhục nhã lắm. Vua bảo : “Các ngươi cứ ở lại Giê-ri-khô chờ cho râu mọc lại rồi hãy về.”

6Con cái Am-mon thấy rằng mình đã trở nên đáng ghét đối với vua Đa-vít. Con cái Am-mon đã sai người đi thuê của dân A-ram ở Bết Rơ-khốp và dân A-ram ở Xô-va : hai mươi ngàn bộ binh ; của vua thành Ma-a-kha : một ngàn người ; của dân thành Tốp : mười hai ngàn người.

7Vua Đa-vít nghe tin thì sai ông Giô-áp đi với toàn thể đạo binh các dũng sĩ.

8Con cái Am-mon tiến ra và dàn trận ở lối vào cửa thành. Quân A-ram Xô-va, quân A-ram Rơ-khốp, quân Tốp và quân Ma-a-kha thì đóng riêng ngoài đồng.

9Ông Giô-áp thấy rằng mình phải đối phó với mặt trận cả phía trước lẫn phía sau, nên đã chọn trong toàn thể tinh binh của Ít-ra-en một số người và dàn trận đối diện với người A-ram.

10Phần quân còn lại, ông giao cho ông A-vi-sai, anh ông, để dàn trận đối diện với con cái Am-mon.

11Ông nói : “Nếu người A-ram mạnh hơn tôi, thì bác sẽ cứu viện tôi. Còn nếu con cái Am-mon mạnh hơn bác, thì tôi sẽ đến cứu viện bác.

12Can đảm lên, chúng ta hãy tỏ ra can đảm, vì dân chúng ta và vì các thành của Thiên Chúa chúng ta ! Xin ĐỨC CHÚA thực hiện điều Người coi là tốt !”

13Ông Giô-áp và quân binh của ông tiến lên giao chiến với quân A-ram, và chúng chạy trốn trước mặt họ.

14Khi con cái Am-mon thấy quân A-ram chạy trốn, thì chúng cũng chạy trốn trước mặt ông A-vi-sai và rút về thành. Sau khi thắng con cái Am-mon, ông Giô-áp trở về Giê-ru-sa-lem.

15Người A-ram thấy mình bị Ít-ra-en đánh bại, thì họp lại với nhau.

16Vua Ha-đát-e-de sai người đi chiêu mộ người A-ram ở bên kia Sông Cả. Chúng đến Khê-lam, có Sô-vác, tướng chỉ huy quân đội của vua Ha-đát-e-de, cầm đầu.

17Người ta báo tin cho vua Đa-vít. Vua quy tụ toàn thể Ít-ra-en, vượt sông Gio-đan và đến Khê-lam. Người A-ram dàn trận đối diện với vua Đa-vít và giao chiến với vua.

18Người A-ram chạy trốn trước mặt Ít-ra-en. Vua Đa-vít tiêu diệt của người A-ram bảy trăm chiến xa và bốn mươi ngàn kỵ binh. Còn Sô-vác, tướng chỉ huy quân đội, thì bị vua hạ và chết tại đó.

19Tất cả các vua chư hầu của vua Ha-đát-e-de thấy mình bị Ít-ra-en đánh bại, thì cầu hoà với Ít-ra-en và làm tôi họ. Người A-ram sợ không dám cứu viện con cái Am-mon nữa.
