1And immediately, in the morning, the chief priests having made a consultation, with the elders, and scribes, and the whole sanhedrim, having bound Jesus, did lead away, and delivered [him] to Pilate;

2and Pilate questioned him, 'Art thou the king of the Jews?' and he answering said to him, 'Thou dost say [it].'

3And the chief priests were accusing him of many things, [but he answered nothing.]

4And Pilate again questioned him, saying, 'Thou dost not answer anything! lo, how many things they do testify against thee!'

5and Jesus did no more answer anything, so that Pilate wondered.

6And at every feast he was releasing to them one prisoner, whomsoever they were asking;

7and there was [one] named Barabbas, bound with those making insurrection with him, who had in the insurrection committed murder.

8And the multitude having cried out, began to ask for themselves as he was always doing to them,

9and Pilate answered them, saying, 'Will ye [that] I shall release to you the king of the Jews?'

10for he knew that because of envy the chief priests had delivered him up;

11and the chief priests did move the multitude, that he might rather release Barabbas to them.

12And Pilate answering, again said to them, 'What, then, will ye [that] I shall do to him whom ye call king of the Jews?'

13and they again cried out, 'Crucify him.'

14And Pilate said to them, 'Why — what evil did he?' and they cried out the more vehemently, 'Crucify him;'

15and Pilate, wishing to content the multitude, released to them Barabbas, and delivered up Jesus — having scourged [him] — that he might be crucified.

16And the soldiers led him away into the hall, which is Praetorium, and call together the whole band,

17and clothe him with purple, and having plaited a crown of thorns, they put [it] on him,

18and began to salute him, 'Hail, King of the Jews.'

19And they were smiting him on the head with a reed, and were spitting on him, and having bent the knee, were bowing to him,

20and when they [had] mocked him, they took the purple from off him, and clothed him in his own garments, and they led him forth, that they may crucify him.

21And they impress a certain one passing by — Simon, a Cyrenian, coming from the field, the father of Alexander and Rufus — that he may bear his cross,

22and they bring him to the place Golgotha, which is, being interpreted, 'Place of a skull;'

23and they were giving him to drink wine mingled with myrrh, and he did not receive.

24And having crucified him, they were dividing his garments, casting a lot upon them, what each may take;

25and it was the third hour, and they crucified him;

26and the inscription of his accusation was written above — 'The King of the Jews.'

27And with him they crucify two robbers, one on the right hand, and one on his left,

28and the Writing was fulfilled that is saying, 'And with lawless ones he was numbered.'

29And those passing by were speaking evil of him, shaking their heads, and saying, 'Ah, the thrower down of the sanctuary, and in three days the builder!

30save thyself, and come down from the cross!'

31And in like manner also the chief priests, mocking with one another, with the scribes, said, 'Others he saved; himself he is not able to save.

32The Christ! the king of Israel — let him come down now from the cross, that we may see and believe;' and those crucified with him were reproaching him.

33And the sixth hour having come, darkness came over the whole land till the ninth hour,

34and at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a great voice, saying, 'Eloi, Eloi, lamma sabachthani?' which is, being interpreted, 'My God, my God, why didst Thou forsake me?'

35And certain of those standing by, having heard, said, 'Lo, Elijah he doth call;'

36and one having run, and having filled a spunge with vinegar, having put [it] also on a reed, was giving him to drink, saying, 'Let alone, let us see if Elijah doth come to take him down.'

37And Jesus having uttered a loud cry, yielded the spirit,

38and the veil of the sanctuary was rent in two, from top to bottom,

39and the centurion who was standing over-against him, having seen that, having so cried out, he yielded the spirit, said, 'Truly this man was Son of God.'

40And there were also women afar off beholding, among whom was also Mary the Magdalene, and Mary of James the less, and of Joses, and Salome,

41(who also, when he was in Galilee, were following him, and were ministering to him,) and many other women who came up with him to Jerusalem.

42And now evening having come, seeing it was the preparation, that is, the fore-sabbath,

43Joseph of Arimathea, an honourable counsellor, who also himself was waiting for the reign of God, came, boldly entered in unto Pilate, and asked the body of Jesus.

44And Pilate wondered if he were already dead, and having called near the centurion, did question him if he were long dead,

45and having known [it] from the centurion, he granted the body to Joseph.

46And he, having brought fine linen, and having taken him down, wrapped him in the linen, and laid him in a sepulchre that had been hewn out of a rock, and he rolled a stone unto the door of the sepulchre,

47and Mary the Magdalene, and Mary of Joses, were beholding where he is laid.

1Vừa tảng sáng, các thượng tế đã họp bàn với các kỳ mục và kinh sư, tức là toàn thể Thượng Hội Đồng. Sau đó, họ trói Đức Giê-su lại và giải đi nộp cho ông Phi-la-tô.

2Ông Phi-la-tô hỏi Người : “Ông là vua dân Do-thái sao ?” Người trả lời : “Đúng như ngài nói đó.”

3Các thượng tế tố cáo Người nhiều tội,

4nên ông Phi-la-tô lại hỏi Người : “Ông không trả lời gì sao ? Nghe kìa, họ tố cáo ông biết bao nhiêu tội !”

5Nhưng Đức Giê-su không trả lời gì nữa, khiến ông Phi-la-tô phải ngạc nhiên.

6Vào mỗi dịp lễ lớn, ông thường phóng thích cho dân một người tù, tuỳ ý họ xin.

7Khi ấy có một người tên là Ba-ra-ba, đang bị giam với những tên phiến loạn đã giết người trong một vụ nổi dậy.

8Đám đông kéo nhau lên yêu cầu tổng trấn ban ân xá như thường lệ.

9Đáp lời họ yêu cầu, ông Phi-la-tô hỏi : “Các ông có muốn ta phóng thích vua dân Do-thái cho các ông không ?”

10Bởi ông thừa biết chỉ vì ghen tị mà các thượng tế nộp Người.

11Nhưng các thượng tế sách động đám đông đòi ông Phi-la-tô phóng thích tên Ba-ra-ba thì hơn.

12Ông Phi-la-tô lại hỏi : “Vậy ta phải xử thế nào với người mà các ông gọi là vua dân Do-thái ?”

13Họ la lên : “Đóng đinh nó vào thập giá !”

14Ông Phi-la-tô lại hỏi : “Nhưng ông ấy đã làm điều gì gian ác ?” Họ càng la to : “Đóng đinh nó vào thập giá !”

15Vì muốn chiều lòng đám đông, ông Phi-la-tô phóng thích tên Ba-ra-ba, truyền đánh đòn Đức Giê-su, rồi trao Người cho họ đóng đinh vào thập giá.

16Lính điệu Đức Giê-su vào bên trong công trường, tức là dinh tổng trấn, và tập trung cả cơ đội lại.

17Chúng khoác cho Người một tấm áo điều, và kết một vòng gai làm vương miện đặt lên đầu Người.

18Rồi chúng bái chào Người : “Vạn tuế đức vua dân Do-thái !”

19Chúng lấy cây sậy đập lên đầu Người, khạc nhổ vào Người, và quỳ gối bái lạy.

20Chế giễu chán, chúng lột áo điều ra, và cho Người mặc áo lại như trước. Sau đó, chúng dẫn Người đi để đóng đinh vào thập giá.

21Lúc ấy, có một người từ miền quê lên, đi ngang qua đó, tên là Si-môn, gốc Ky-rê-nê. Ông là thân phụ hai ông A-lê-xan-đê và Ru-phô. Chúng bắt ông vác thập giá đỡ Đức Giê-su.

22Chúng đưa Người lên một nơi gọi là Gôn-gô-tha, nghĩa là Đồi Sọ.

23Chúng trao rượu pha một dược cho Người, nhưng Người không uống.

24Chúng đóng đinh Người vào thập giá, rồi *đem áo Người ra bắt thăm mà chia nhau,* xem ai được cái gì.

25Lúc chúng đóng đinh Người là giờ thứ ba.

26Bản án xử tội Người viết rằng : “Vua người Do-thái”.

27Bên cạnh Người, chúng còn đóng đinh hai tên cướp, một đứa bên phải, một đứa bên trái. \[

28Thế là ứng nghiệm lời Kinh Thánh : Người bị liệt vào hạng những tên phạm pháp.]

29Kẻ qua người lại đều nhục mạ Người, vừa *lắc đầu* vừa nói : “Ê, mi là kẻ phá Đền Thờ, và nội trong ba ngày xây lại được,

30có giỏi thì xuống khỏi thập giá mà cứu mình đi !”

31Các thượng tế và kinh sư cũng chế giễu Người như vậy, họ nói với nhau : “Hắn cứu được thiên hạ, mà chẳng cứu nổi mình.

32Ông Ki-tô vua Ít-ra-en, cứ xuống khỏi thập giá ngay bây giờ đi, để chúng ta thấy và tin.” Cả những tên cùng chịu đóng đinh với Người cũng nhục mạ Người.

33Vào giờ thứ sáu, bóng tối bao phủ khắp mặt đất mãi đến giờ thứ chín.

34Vào giờ thứ chín, Đức Giê-su kêu lớn tiếng : *“Ê-lô-i, Ê-lô-i, la-ma xa-bác-tha-ni !”* Nghĩa là : *“Lạy Thiên Chúa, Thiên Chúa của con, sao Ngài bỏ rơi con ?”*

35Nghe vậy, một vài người đứng đó liền nói : “Kìa hắn kêu cứu ông Ê-li-a.”

36Rồi có kẻ chạy đi lấy một miếng bọt biển, thấm đầy *giấm,* cắm vào một cây sậy, *đưa lên cho* Người *uống* mà nói : “Để xem ông Ê-li-a có đến đem hắn xuống không.”

37Đức Giê-su lại kêu lên một tiếng lớn, rồi tắt thở.

38Bức màn trướng trong Đền Thờ bỗng xé ra làm hai từ trên xuống dưới.

39Viên đại đội trưởng đứng đối diện với Đức Giê-su, thấy Người tắt thở như vậy liền nói : “Quả thật, người này là Con Thiên Chúa.”

40Nhưng cũng có mấy phụ nữ đứng xa xa mà nhìn, trong đó có bà Ma-ri-a Mác-đa-la, bà Ma-ri-a mẹ các ông Gia-cô-bê Thứ và Giô-xết, cùng bà Sa-lô-mê.

41Các bà này đã đi theo và giúp đỡ Đức Giê-su khi Người còn ở Ga-li-lê. Lại có nhiều bà khác đã cùng với Người lên Giê-ru-sa-lem, cũng có mặt tại đó.

42Chiều đến, vì hôm ấy là ngày áp lễ, tức là hôm trước ngày sa-bát,

43nên ông Giô-xếp tới. Ông là người thành A-ri-ma-thê, thành viên có thế giá của hội đồng, và cũng là người vẫn mong đợi Triều Đại của Thiên Chúa. Ông đã mạnh dạn đến gặp tổng trấn Phi-la-tô để xin thi hài Đức Giê-su.

44Nghe nói Người đã chết, ông Phi-la-tô lấy làm ngạc nhiên, và cho đòi viên đại đội trưởng đến, hỏi xem Người đã chết lâu chưa.

45Sau khi nghe viên sĩ quan cho biết sự việc, tổng trấn đã cho ông Giô-xếp lãnh lấy thi hài.

46Ông này mua một tấm vải gai, hạ xác Đức Giê-su xuống, lấy tấm vải ấy liệm Người lại, đem đặt vào ngôi mộ đã đục sẵn trong núi đá, rồi lăn tảng đá lấp cửa mộ.

47Còn bà Ma-ri-a Mác-đa-la và bà Ma-ri-a mẹ ông Giô-xết, thì để ý nhìn xem chỗ họ mai táng Người.
