1Festus therefore, having come into the province, after three days went up to Jerusalem from Caesarea.

2Then the high priest and the principal men of the Jews informed him against Paul, and they begged him,

3asking a favour against him, that he would summon him to Jerusalem, plotting to kill him on the way.

4However Festus answered that Paul should be kept in custody at Caesarea, and that he himself was about to depart shortly.

5“Let them therefore”, he said, “that are in power amongst you go down with me, and if there is anything wrong in the man, let them accuse him.”

6When he had stayed amongst them more than ten days, he went down to Caesarea, and on the next day he sat on the judgement seat, and commanded Paul to be brought.

7When he had come, the Jews who had come down from Jerusalem stood around him, bringing against him many and grievous charges which they could not prove,

8while he said in his defence, “Neither against the law of the Jews, nor against the temple, nor against Caesar, have I sinned at all.”

9But Festus, desiring to gain favour with the Jews, answered Paul and said, “Are you willing to go up to Jerusalem and be judged by me there concerning these things?”

10But Paul said, “I am standing before Caesar’s judgement seat, where I ought to be tried. I have done no wrong to the Jews, as you also know very well.

11For if I have done wrong and have committed anything worthy of death, I don’t refuse to die; but if none of those things is true that they accuse me of, no one can give me up to them. I appeal to Caesar!”

12Then Festus, when he had conferred with the council, answered, “You have appealed to Caesar. To Caesar you shall go.”

13Now when some days had passed, King Agrippa and Bernice arrived at Caesarea and greeted Festus.

14As he stayed there many days, Festus laid Paul’s case before the king, saying, “There is a certain man left a prisoner by Felix;

15about whom, when I was at Jerusalem, the chief priests and the elders of the Jews informed me, asking for a sentence against him.

16I answered them that it is not the custom of the Romans to give up any man to destruction before the accused has met the accusers face to face and has had opportunity to make his defence concerning the matter laid against him.

17When therefore they had come together here, I didn’t delay, but on the next day sat on the judgement seat and commanded the man to be brought.

18When the accusers stood up, they brought no charges against him of such things as I supposed;

19but had certain questions against him about their own religion and about one Jesus, who was dead, whom Paul affirmed to be alive.

20Being perplexed how to enquire concerning these things, I asked whether he was willing to go to Jerusalem and there be judged concerning these matters.

21But when Paul had appealed to be kept for the decision of the emperor, I commanded him to be kept until I could send him to Caesar.”

22Agrippa said to Festus, “I also would like to hear the man myself.” “Tomorrow,” he said, “you shall hear him.”

23So on the next day, when Agrippa and Bernice had come with great pomp, and they had entered into the place of hearing with the commanding officers and the principal men of the city, at the command of Festus, Paul was brought in.

24Festus said, “King Agrippa, and all men who are here present with us, you see this man about whom all the multitude of the Jews petitioned me, both at Jerusalem and here, crying that he ought not to live any longer.

25But when I found that he had committed nothing worthy of death, and as he himself appealed to the emperor, I determined to send him,

26of whom I have no certain thing to write to my lord. Therefore I have brought him out before you, and especially before you, King Agrippa, that, after examination I may have something to write.

27For it seems to me unreasonable, in sending a prisoner, not to also specify the charges against him.”

Phao-lô Trước Tổng Trấn Phê-tu

1Vừa nhậm chức được ba ngày, Phê-tu từ Sê-sa-rê lên Giê-ru-sa-lem.

2Các thầy trưởng tế và các nhà lãnh đạo Do Thái lại đến tố cáo Phao-lô,

3họ nài nỉ tổng trấn cho giải Phao-lô về Giê-ru-sa-lem, vì họ âm mưu giết ông dọc đường.

4Nhưng Phê-tu từ khước: “Phao-lô đang bị giam tại Sê-sa-rê và ta cũng sắp trở về đó.

5Ai đủ tư cách đại diện bên nguyên cáo nên theo ta xuống đó. Nếu đương sự có tội gì, cứ đem ra tố cáo!”

6Phê-tu ở Giê-ru-sa-lem độ mười ngày rồi trở về Sê-sa-rê. Hôm sau, tổng trấn ra ngồi nghế chánh án và truyền lệnh giải Phao-lô ra tòa.

7Phao-lô vừa bước vào, các cấp lãnh đạo Do Thái đến vây quanh, tranh nhau tố cáo ông nhiều tội nặng nề nhưng không nêu được bằng chứng.

8Phao-lô trả lời: “Tôi chẳng có tội gì đối với luật pháp Do Thái, hoặc xúc phạm Đền Thờ, hoặc chống chính quyền La Mã.”

9Nhưng Phê-tu muốn làm vừa lòng người Do Thái nên hỏi Phao-lô: “Anh muốn về Giê-ru-sa-lem cho ta xét xử tại đó không?”

10Phao-lô đáp: “Không! Đây là tòa án công phán của La Mã, tôi xin được xét xử tại đây. Như ngài đã biết, tôi chẳng có lỗi gì với người Do Thái cả.

11Nếu tôi có tội hoặc làm điều gì đáng chết, tôi xin sẵn sàng đền tội. Trái lại, nếu những lời họ tố cáo đều vô căn cứ thì không ai được giao nộp tôi cho họ. Tôi xin khiếu nại lên Sê-sa!”

12Sau khi thảo luận với các cố vấn, Phê-tu tuyên bố: “Đương sự đã khiếu nại lên Sê-a nên sẽ được hầu tòa của Sê-sa.”

13Mấy ngày sau, Vua Ạc-ríp-ba và em gái là Bê-rê-nít đến Sê-sa-rê thăm Phê-tu.

14Vì họ ở lại lâu ngày nên Phê-tu đem vụ Phao-lô tâu với vua: “Có một tù nhân Phê-lít để lại đây.

15Khi tôi lên Giê-ru-sa-lem, các thầy trưởng tế và các nhà lãnh đạo Do Thái đến tố cáo và xin tôi kết án người này.

16Tôi trả lời: ‘Theo pháp luật La Mã, không thể kết tội khi bị cáo chưa được xét xử, chưa đối chất với nguyên cáo để có cơ hội bào chữa.’

17Khi các nguyên cáo đến đây, tôi liền cho xử vụ này vào ngày hôm sau.

18Bên nguyên đứng lên tố cáo nhưng chẳng buộc tội gì như tôi tưởng,

19chỉ nói những điều lăng nhăng về tôn giáo của họ, và về một người tên Giê-xu đã chết nhưng Phao-lô quả quyết vẫn còn sống.

20Đang phân vân không biết quyết định thế nào, tôi hỏi Phao-lô có muốn về Giê-ru-sa-lem hầu tòa không.

21Nhưng Phao-lô khiếu nại lên tòa án Sê-sa, nên tôi ra lệnh giam giữ đương sự cho đến ngày giải lên Sê-sa.”

22Ạc-ríp-ba nói: “Ta cũng muốn nghe người ấy!” Phê-tu thưa: “Ngày mai vua sẽ nghe.”

Phao-lô Rao Giảng cho Vua Ạc-ríp-ba

23Hôm sau Ạc-ríp-ba và Bê-rê-nít đến tòa án. Nghi lễ thật long trọng, có các quan chỉ huy quân đội và các cấp lãnh đạo thành phố tháp tùng. Phê-tu ra lệnh giải Phao-lô vào,

24rồi tuyên bố: “Thưa Vua Ạc-ríp-ba, thưa quý vị. Người này đã bị người Do Thái tại Giê-ru-sa-lem và Sê-sa-rê đòi mạng.

25Nhưng tôi xét thấy đương sự chẳng phạm tội gì đáng chết cả. Vì đương sự khiếu nại lên Sê-sa nên tôi đã chấp thuận giải về La Mã.

26Nhưng tôi viết gì để trình lên vua? Tôi chưa biết đích xác tội trạng đương sự nên đem ông ấy đến trước mặt quý vị, đặc biệt là trước mặt Vua Ạc-ríp-ba để sau khi điều tra xong, tôi có dữ liệu để viết tờ trình.

27Vì thiết nghĩ, giải nộp phạm nhân mà không nêu tội trạng thì thật phi lý!”
