Giu-đa Tự Sát

1Trời vừa sáng, các thầy trưởng tế và các trưởng lão bàn định kế hoạch giết Chúa Giê-xu.

2Họ xiềng Ngài thật chặt rồi giải qua Phi-lát, tổng trấn La Mã.

3Khi Giu-đa, người phản Chúa, thấy Chúa bị kết án nặng nề, thì hối hận. Ông liền đem ba mươi miếng bạc trả lại các thầy trưởng tế và các trưởng lão.

4Giu-đa than thở: “Tôi có tội, vì phản bội người vô tội!” Họ lạnh lùng đáp: “Mặc anh chứ! Việc ấy liên hệ gì đến chúng tôi?”

5Giu-đa ném bạc vào trong Đền Thờ rồi ra ngoài thắt cổ chết.

6Các thầy trưởng tế lượm bạc lên, bảo nhau: “Bạc này dính dấp máu người, không được để trong kho báu của Đền Thờ.”

7Họ quyết định dùng số bạc mua đám đất của thợ gốm để làm nghĩa trang chôn người nước ngoài.

8Vì thế, người ta gọi đám đất đó là Cánh Đồng Máu.

9Việc xảy ra đúng theo lời Tiên tri Giê-rê-mi: “Họ lấy ba mươi miếng bạc,là giá người Ít-ra-ên định cho một người,

10và dùng số bạc mua cánh đồng của thợ gốm,như lời Chúa Hằng Hữu truyền bảo tôi.”

Chúa Giê-xu Trước Tòa Phi-lát

11Chúa Giê-xu đứng trước Phi-lát, tổng trấn La Mã. Tổng trấn hỏi: “Anh có phải là Vua người Do Thái không?” Chúa Giê-xu đáp: “Ông đã nói điều đó.”

12Nhưng khi các thầy trưởng tế và các trưởng lão tranh nhau vu cáo, Chúa Giê-xu vẫn im lặng.

13Phi-lát nhắc: “Anh không nghe họ tố cáo anh đủ điều đó sao?”

14Nhưng Chúa Giê-xu vẫn im lặng, khiến tổng trấn vô cùng ngạc nhiên.

15Hằng năm, đến Lễ Vượt Qua, tổng trấn có lệ tha một tử tù theo lời thỉnh cầu của dân chúng.

16Năm ấy, có một phạm nhân nổi tiếng tên Ba-ra-ba.

17Khi thấy dân chúng tụ tập đông đảo trước dinh, Phi-lát hỏi: “Các anh muốn ta tha ai? Ba-ra-ba hay Giê-xu còn gọi là Đấng Mết-si-a?”

18(Vì Phi-lát biết rõ họ bắt nộp Chúa Giê-xu chỉ vì lòng ganh ghét).

19Giữa lúc Phi-lát đang ngồi xử án, vợ ông sai người đến dặn: “Đừng động đến người vô tội đó, vì đêm qua tôi có một cơn ác mộng kinh khiếp về người.”

20Nhưng các thầy trưởng tế và các trưởng lão sách động quần chúng xin Phi-lát phóng thích Ba-ra-ba và xử tử Chúa Giê-xu.

21Tổng trấn hỏi lại: “Trong hai người, các anh muốn ta tha ai?” Dân chúng đáp: “Ba-ra-ba!”

22Phi-lát hỏi tiếp: “Vậy ta phải làm gì với Giê-xu còn gọi là Đấng Mết-si-a?” Họ la lớn: “Đóng đinh hắn!”

23Phi-lát hỏi: “Tại sao? Người phạm tội gì?” Nhưng họ gầm thét: “Đóng đinh hắn trên cây thập tự!”

24Phi-lát thấy mình không kiểm soát nổi dân chúng, cuộc náo loạn sắp bùng nổ, nên ông lấy nước rửa tay trước mặt mọi người và tuyên bố: “Ta vô tội về máu của Người này. Trách nhiệm về phần các anh!”

25Cả đoàn dân đều thét lên: “Cứ đòi nợ máu ấy nơi chúng tôi và con cháu chúng tôi!”

26Vậy, Phi-lát phóng thích Ba-ra-ba cho họ, đồng thời sai đánh Chúa Giê-xu rồi giao cho lính đem đóng đinh trên cây thập tự.

Những Người Lính Chế Nhạo Chúa Giê-xu

27Quân lính La Mã giải Chúa Giê-xu vào dinh tổng trấn, rồi tập họp cả đại đội vây quanh Ngài.

28Họ lột áo rồi khoác cho Ngài tấm áo choàng màu tía.

29Họ bện chiếc mão bằng gai đội lên đầu Chúa và đặt vào tay phải Ngài một cây gậy bằng sậy. Rồi họ quỳ xuống trước mặt Ngài, chế giễu: “Lạy Vua người Do Thái!”

30Họ lại khạc nhổ vào mặt Chúa, lấy gậy đập lên đầu Ngài.

31Chế giễu xong, họ cởi áo choàng ra, mặc áo lại cho Chúa rồi dẫn Ngài đi đóng đinh trên cây thập tự.

Sự Đóng Đinh

32Vừa lên đường, quân lính thấy Si-môn, người xứ Ly-bi, liền bắt anh vác cây thập tự cho Chúa.

33Đoàn người tiến lên đồi Gô-gô-tha (nghĩa là đồi Sọ).

34Họ cho Chúa uống rượu thuốc để xoa dịu cơn đau, nhưng Ngài nếm qua rồi không chịu uống.

35Quân lính đóng đinh Chúa trên cây thập tự. Họ gieo súc sắc chia nhau bộ áo của Ngài,

36rồi ngồi canh gác chung quanh cây thập tự.

37Họ treo trên đầu Ngài tấm bảng ghi tội trạng: “Đây là Giê-xu, Vua người Do Thái.”

38Bọn lính cũng đóng đinh hai tướng cướp trên cây thập tự, một tên bên phải, một tên bên trái Chúa.

39Khách qua đường lắc đầu, sỉ nhục Chúa:

40“Anh đòi phá nát Đền Thờ rồi xây lại trong ba ngày, sao không tự giải cứu đi! Nếu anh là Con Đức Chúa Trời, sao không xuống khỏi cây thập tự đi!”

41Các thầy trưởng tế, thầy dạy luật, và các trưởng lão cũng mỉa mai:

42“Nó cứu người khác giỏi lắm mà cứu mình không nổi! Vua người Do Thái hả? Phải xuống khỏi cây thập tự chúng ta mới tin!

43Nó tin cậy Đức Chúa Trời, lại tự xưng là Con Đức Chúa Trời. Nếu Ngài nhìn nhận nó, hẳn Ngài phải cứu nó!”

44Hai tướng cướp bị đóng đinh bên cạnh Chúa cũng hùa theo sỉ nhục Ngài.

Cái Chết của Chúa Giê-xu

45Từ trưa đến 3 giờ chiều, khắp nơi đều tối đen như mực.

46Lúc ba giờ, Chúa Giê-xu kêu lớn: “Ê-li, Ê-li, lam-ma-sa-bách-ta-ni?” nghĩa là: “Đức Chúa Trời ơi! Đức Chúa Trời ơi! Sao Ngài lìa bỏ Con?”

47Nghe tiếng kêu, mấy người đứng gần bảo: “Này, hắn gọi Ê-li!”

48Một người chạy đi lấy bông đá, tẩm rượu chua, buộc vào đầu cây gậy đưa lên cho Chúa nhấm.

49Những người khác lại bảo: “Ta chờ xem Ê-li có đến cứu nó không!”

50Chúa Giê-xu kêu lên một tiếng lớn nữa, rồi tắt hơi.

51Lập tức, bức màn trong Đền Thờ bị xé đôi từ trên xuống dưới. Đất rúng động dữ dội, đá lớn vỡ ra.

52Các cửa mộ mở tung và nhiều người thánh đã chết được sống lại.

53Họ ra khỏi mộ, đợi đến khi Chúa sống lại mới vào thành thánh Giê-ru-sa-lem xuất hiện cho nhiều người xem thấy.

54Viên đại đội trưởng cũng như quân lính La Mã đang canh giữ Chúa thấy cơn động đất và các diễn biến ấy, đều khiếp sợ và nhìn nhận: “Người này thật đúng là Con Đức Chúa Trời!”

55Nhóm phụ nữ theo phục vụ Chúa từ xứ Ga-li-lê, đều đứng từ xa mà nhìn.

56Trong số ấy có Ma-ri Ma-đơ-len, Ma-ri (mẹ của Gia-cơ và Giô-sép), và bà Xê-bê-đê, mẹ Gia-cơ và Giăng.

An Táng Chúa Giê-xu

57Đến tối, Giô-sép—một người giàu có ở vùng A-ri-ma-thê—cũng là môn đệ của Chúa Giê-xu—

58đến xin Phi-lát cho lãnh xác Chúa Giê-xu. Phi-lát ra lệnh giao xác Chúa cho ông.

59Giô-sép hạ thi hài Chúa xuống, khâm liệm bằng một cây vải gai sạch,

60rồi đem an táng trong huyệt đá của riêng ông mà ông mới đục trong sườn núi. Giô-sép lăn một tảng đá lớn chặn trước cửa mộ, rồi ra về.

61Còn Ma-ri Ma-đơ-len và Ma-ri, mẹ Gia-cơ vẫn ngồi trước mộ.

Lính Canh Gác Mộ

62Hôm sau, kế ngày chuẩn bị lễ Vượt Qua, các thầy trưởng tế và thầy Pha-ri-si đến gặp Phi-lát.

63Họ thỉnh cầu: “Chúng tôi nhớ khi còn sống tên lừa bịp này đã nói: ‘Sau ba ngày tôi sẽ sống lại.’

64Để đề phòng mưu gian, xin tổng trấn ra lệnh canh gác mộ nó thật nghiêm ngặt suốt ba ngày, như thế môn đệ nó không thể đánh cắp xác nó rồi phao tin rằng nó sống lại! Nếu mưu gian ấy được thành, việc dối gạt này sẽ tai hại hơn lần trước.”

65Phi-lát đáp: “Các anh có lính canh, cứ việc canh gác cho cẩn mật!”

66Họ liền niêm phong tảng đá và đặt lính canh gác ngôi mộ.

Jesus Delivered to Pilate

1When morning came, all the chief priests and elders of the people conspired against Jesus to put Him to death.

2They bound Him, led Him away, and handed Him over to Pilate the governor.

Judas Hangs Himself

3When Judas, who had betrayed Him, saw that Jesus was condemned, he was filled with remorse and returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders.

4“I have sinned by betraying innocent blood,” he said. “What is that to us?” they replied. “You bear the responsibility.”

5So Judas threw the silver into the temple and left. Then he went away and hanged himself.

6The chief priests picked up the pieces of silver and said, “It is unlawful to put this into the treasury, since it is blood money.”

7After conferring together, they used the money to buy the potter’s field as a burial place for foreigners.

8That is why it has been called the Field of Blood to this day.

9Then what was spoken through Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled: “They took the thirty pieces of silver,the price set on Him by the people of Israel,

10and they gave them for the potter’s field,as the Lord had commanded me.”

Jesus before Pilate

11Meanwhile Jesus stood before the governor, who questioned Him: “Are You the King of the Jews?” “You have said so,” Jesus replied.

12And when He was accused by the chief priests and elders, He gave no answer.

13Then Pilate asked Him, “Do You not hear how many charges they are bringing against You?”

14But Jesus gave no answer, not even to a single charge, much to the governor’s amazement.

The Crowd Chooses Barabbas

15Now it was the governor’s custom at the feast to release to the crowd a prisoner of their choosing.

16At that time they were holding a notorious prisoner named Barabbas.

17So when the crowd had assembled, Pilate asked them, “Which one do you want me to release to you: Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?”

18For he knew it was out of envy that they had handed Jesus over to him.

19While Pilate was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent him this message: “Have nothing to do with that innocent man, for I have suffered terribly in a dream today because of Him.”

20But the chief priests and elders persuaded the crowds to ask for Barabbas and to have Jesus put to death.

21“Which of the two do you want me to release to you?” asked the governor. “Barabbas,” they replied.

22“What then should I do with Jesus who is called Christ?” Pilate asked. They all answered, “Crucify Him!”

23“Why?” asked Pilate. “What evil has He done?” But they shouted all the louder, “Crucify Him!”

Pilate Washes His Hands

24When Pilate saw that he was accomplishing nothing, but that instead a riot was breaking out, he took water and washed his hands before the crowd. “I am innocent of this man’s blood,” he said. “You bear the responsibility.”

25All the people answered, “His blood be on us and on our children!”

26So Pilate released Barabbas to them. But he had Jesus flogged, and handed Him over to be crucified.

The Soldiers Mock Jesus

27Then the governor’s soldiers took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole company around Him.

28They stripped Him and put a scarlet robe on Him.

29And they twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on His head. They put a staff in His right hand, knelt down before Him, and mocked Him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!”

30Then they spit on Him and took the staff and struck Him on the head repeatedly.

31After they had mocked Him, they removed the robe and put His own clothes back on Him. Then they led Him away to crucify Him.

The Crucifixion

32Along the way they found a man from Cyrene, named Simon, and they forced him to carry the cross of Jesus.

33And when they came to a place called Golgotha, which means The Place of the Skull,

34they offered Him wine to drink, mixed with gall; but after tasting it, He refused to drink it.

35When they had crucified Him, they divided up His garments by casting lots.

36And sitting down, they kept watch over Him there.

37Above His head they posted the written charge against Him: THIS IS JESUS, THE KING OF THE JEWS.

38Two robberswere crucified with Him, one on His right and the other on His left.

39And those who passed by heaped abuse on Him, shaking their heads

40and saying, “You who are going to destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save Yourself! If You are the Son of God, come down from the cross!”

41In the same way, the chief priests, scribes, and elders mocked Him, saying,

42“He saved others, but He cannot save Himself. He is the King of Israel! Let Him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in Him.

43He trusts in God. Let God deliver Him now if He wants Him.For He said, ‘I am the Son of God.’”

44In the same way, even the robbers who were crucified with Him berated Him.

The Death of Jesus

45From the sixth hour until the ninth hourdarkness came over all the land.

46About the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eli, Eli,lema sabachthani?” which means, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”

47When some of those standing there heard this, they said, “He is calling Elijah.”

48One of them quickly ran and brought a sponge. He filled it with sour wine,put it on a reed, and held it up for Jesus to drink.

49But the others said, “Leave Him alone. Let us see if Elijah comes to save Him.”

50When Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, He yielded up His spirit.

51At that moment the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth quaked, and the rocks were split.

52The tombs broke open, and the bodies of many saints who had fallen asleep were raised.

53After Jesus’ resurrection, when they had come out of the tombs, they entered the holy city and appeared to many people.

54When the centurion and those with him who were guarding Jesus saw the earthquake and all that had happened, they were terrified and said, “Truly this was the Son of God.”

55And many women were there, watching from a distance. They had followed Jesus from Galilee to minister to Him.

56Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of Zebedee’s sons.

The Burial of Jesus

57When it was evening, there came a rich man from Arimathea named Joseph, who himself was a disciple of Jesus.

58He went to Pilate to ask for the body of Jesus, and Pilate ordered that it be given to him.

59So Joseph took the body, wrapped it in a clean linen cloth,

60and placed it in his own new tomb that he had cut into the rock. Then he rolled a great stone across the entrance to the tomb and went away.

61Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were sitting there opposite the tomb.

The Guards at the Tomb

62The next day, the one after Preparation Day, the chief priests and Pharisees assembled before Pilate.

63“Sir,” they said, “we remember that while He was alive that deceiver said, ‘After three days I will rise again.’

64So give the order that the tomb be secured until the third day. Otherwise, His disciples may come and steal Him away and tell the people He has risen from the dead. And this last deception would be worse than the first.”

65“You have a guard,” Pilate said. “Go, make the tomb as secure as you know how.”

66So they went and secured the tomb by sealing the stone and posting the guard.
