Cái Chết của Giăng Báp-tít

1Khi Hê-rốt An-ti-ba, người cai trị Ga-li-lê nghe về Chúa Giê-xu,

2ông bảo các cận thần: “Người này chắc là Giăng Báp-tít sống lại, nên mới làm được nhiều việc dị thường như thế!”

3Trước đó ít lâu, vua đã bắt Giăng xiềng lại và tống giam theo lời yêu cầu của Hê-rô-đia, vợ Phi-líp, em Hê-rốt,

4vì Giăng dám nói với Hê-rốt “Bệ hạ lấy nàng là điều trái luật pháp.”

5Vua muốn giết Giăng, nhưng sợ dân chúng nổi loạn, vì mọi người đều công nhận Giăng là nhà tiên tri.

6Trong buổi liên hoan mừng ngày sinh Hê-rốt, con gái Hê-rô-đia ra khiêu vũ giữa tiệc, khiến Hê-rốt say mê.

7Vua thề sẽ cho cô gái bất cứ điều gì cô xin.

8Vì mẹ xúi giục, cô gái xin lấy đầu Giăng Báp-tít để trên mâm.

9Hê-rốt tỏ vẻ buồn phiền, nhưng đã lỡ thề, vua không thể rút lời trước mặt quan khách, đành ra lệnh làm theo ý cô gái.

10Đao phủ chém Giăng trong ngục,

11đặt thủ cấp trên mâm, đưa cô gái bưng về cho mẹ.

12Các môn đệ của Giăng đến lấy xác về mai táng, rồi báo mọi việc cho Chúa Giê-xu.

Chúa Giê-xu Đãi Ăn cho Năm Nghìn Người

13Hay tin ấy, Chúa Giê-xu xuống thuyền đến nơi thanh vắng. Nhưng dân chúng biết được, liền từ nhiều thành phố, làng mạc, theo đường bộ kéo nhau chạy trước đến chỗ Chúa định đi.

14Vừa lên bờ, thấy đoàn dân đông đảo đang chờ đợi, Chúa động lòng thương xót, chữa lành bệnh tật cho họ.

15Gần tối, các môn đệ đến bên Chúa, thưa: “Đã quá giờ ăn tối; giữa nơi hoang vắng này chẳng có gì ăn cả. Xin Thầy cho dân chúng giải tán, để họ vào làng mua thức ăn.”

16Nhưng Chúa Giê-xu đáp: “Họ chẳng cần đi đâu cả. Chính các con hãy cho họ ăn!”

17Các môn đệ ngạc nhiên: “Thầy bảo sao? Chúng con chỉ có năm ổ bánh nhỏ và hai con cá mà thôi!”

18Chúa phán: “Đem lại đây!”

19Chúa cho dân chúng ngồi trên bãi cỏ. Ngài cầm năm ổ bánh và hai con cá, ngước mắt lên trời cảm tạ Đức Chúa Trời, rồi bẻ ra, đưa các môn đệ phân phát cho dân chúng.

20Mọi người đều ăn no. Các môn đệ đi lượm những mẩu bánh thừa, đựng được mười hai giỏ.

21Số người ăn bánh vào khoảng 5.000, không kể phụ nữ và trẻ em!

Chúa Giê-xu Đi Bộ trên Mặt Nước

22Lập tức, Chúa Giê-xu bảo các môn đệ xuống thuyền chèo trước qua bờ bên kia, còn Ngài ở lại cho dân chúng ra về.

23Sau khi từ giã dân chúng, một mình Ngài lên núi cầu nguyện. Đến tối, Chúa vẫn còn trên núi.

24Khi thuyền các môn đệ ra khơi, gặp sóng to gió lớn nên họ phải chèo chống sóng lớn.

25Khoảng bốn giờ sáng, Chúa Giê-xu đi bộ trên mặt nước đến gần thuyền.

26Các môn đệ thấy Chúa đi trên mặt nước, họ vô cùng hoảng sợ. Trong cơn kinh hãi, họ thét lên: “Ma kìa!”

27Chúa liền trấn an: “Ta đây, các con đừng sợ!”

28Phi-e-rơ thưa: “Nếu đúng là Chúa, xin cho con đi trên mặt nước đến gần Chúa.”

29Chúa Giê-xu đáp: “Được, con lại đây!” Phi-e-rơ ra khỏi thuyền, đi trên mặt nước lại gần Chúa.

30Nhìn thấy sóng gió chung quanh, Phi-e-rơ lo sợ, bắt đầu chìm xuống nước, liền kêu lớn: “Chúa ơi, xin cứu con!”

31Chúa Giê-xu lập tức đưa tay nắm chặt Phi-e-rơ: “Đức tin con thật kém cỏi! Sao con nghi ngờ Ta?”

32Chúa và Phi-e-rơ vừa bước vào thuyền, sóng gió đều lặng yên.

33Các môn đệ thờ lạy Ngài và nhìn nhận: “Thầy đúng là Con Đức Chúa Trời!”

34Thuyền tới bờ bên kia, đậu vào bến Ghê-nê-xa-rết.

35Dân chúng trong thành nhận ra Chúa Giê-xu, nên vội vã vào các làng mạc chung quanh báo tin và đem tất cả người bệnh đến với Chúa.

36Họ xin Chúa cho người bệnh sờ trôn áo Ngài; ai sờ áo Chúa đều được lành.

1At that time Herod the tetrarch heard of the fame of Jesus,

2And said unto his servants, This is John the Baptist; he is risen from the dead; and therefore mighty works do shew forth themselves in him.

3¶ For Herod had laid hold on John, and bound him, and put him in prison for Herodias’ sake, his brother Philip’s wife.

4For John said unto him, It is not lawful for thee to have her.

5And when he would have put him to death, he feared the multitude, because they counted him as a prophet.

6But when Herod’s birthday was kept, the daughter of Herodias danced before them, and pleased Herod.

7Whereupon he promised with an oath to give her whatsoever she would ask.

8And she, being before instructed of her mother, said, Give me here John Baptist’s head in a charger.

9And the king was sorry: nevertheless for the oath’s sake, and them which sat with him at meat, he commanded it to be given her.

10And he sent, and beheaded John in the prison.

11And his head was brought in a charger, and given to the damsel: and she brought it to her mother.

12And his disciples came, and took up the body, and buried it, and went and told Jesus.

13¶ When Jesus heard of it, he departed thence by ship into a desert place apart: and when the people had heard thereof, they followed him on foot out of the cities.

14And Jesus went forth, and saw a great multitude, and was moved with compassion toward them, and he healed their sick.

15¶ And when it was evening, his disciples came to him, saying, This is a desert place, and the time is now past; send the multitude away, that they may go into the villages, and buy themselves victuals.

16But Jesus said unto them,They need not depart; give ye them to eat.

17And they say unto him, We have here but five loaves, and two fishes.

18He said,Bring them hither to me.

19And he commanded the multitude to sit down on the grass, and took the five loaves, and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed, and brake, and gave the loaves to his disciples, and the disciples to the multitude.

20And they did all eat, and were filled: and they took up of the fragments that remained twelve baskets full.

21And they that had eaten were about five thousand men, beside women and children.

22¶ And straightway Jesus constrained his disciples to get into a ship, and to go before him unto the other side, while he sent the multitudes away.

23And when he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray: and when the evening was come, he was there alone.

24But the ship was now in the midst of the sea, tossed with waves: for the wind was contrary.

25And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea.

26And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear.

27But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying,Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid.

28And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water.

29And he said,Come.And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus.

30But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me.

31And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him,O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?

32And when they were come into the ship, the wind ceased.

33Then they that were in the ship came and worshipped him, saying, Of a truth thou art the Son of God.

34¶ And when they were gone over, they came into the land of Gennesaret.

35And when the men of that place had knowledge of him, they sent out into all that country round about, and brought unto him all that were diseased;

36And besought him that they might only touch the hem of his garment: and as many as touched were made perfectly whole.
