Kỷ Niệm Vượt Sông Giô-đan

1Khi toàn dân qua khỏi Giô-đan, Chúa Hằng Hữu phán dạy Giô-suê:

2“Hãy chọn mười hai người từ mười hai đại tộc.

3Dặn họ lấy đá từ giữa dòng sông Giô-đan nơi các thầy tế lễ đang đứng, mỗi người một tảng, dựng thành một trụ đá tại nơi dân dừng chân đêm nay.”

4Giô-suê gọi mười hai người đã chọn, mỗi đại tộc một người,

5và bảo họ: “Hãy ra giữa lòng sông Giô-đan ngay trước Hòm Giao Ước của Chúa Hằng Hữu, Đức Chúa Trời của anh em dừng lại, mỗi người theo số đại tộc Ít-ra-ên lấy một tảng đá vác lên vai,

6mười hai tảng đá tượng trưng cho mười hai đại tộc Ít-ra-ên. Đây là tảng đá để kỷ niệm. Về sau, khi con cháu hỏi: ‘các tảng đá này có nghĩa gì?’

7Hãy giải thích rằng: ‘Nước Sông Giô-đan đã rẽ ra trước Hòm Giao Ước của Chúa Hằng Hữu khi hòm đi ngang qua sông.’ Những tảng đá này làm kỷ niệm đời đời cho người Ít-ra-ên.”

8Các người ấy vâng lời Giô-suê. Họ lấy mười hai tảng đá từ giữa lòng Sông Giô-đan, mỗi đại tộc một tảng, đem đặt tại nơi họ nghỉ chân đêm ấy, theo lời Chúa Hằng Hữu phán bảo Giô-suê.

9Giô-suê cũng lấy mười hai tảng đá trên bờ đem xếp giữa lòng sông Giô-đan tại nơi các thầy tế lễ khiêng Hòm Giao Ước dừng lại. Đá ấy vẫn còn cho đến ngày nay.

10Các thầy tế lễ khiêng Hòm Giao Ước tiếp tục đứng giữa lòng sông cho đến khi Giô-suê thi hành xong mọi chỉ thị của Chúa Hằng Hữu, kể cả những chỉ thị Giô-suê nhận được qua Môi-se. Vậy dân chúng qua sông một cách vội vàng.

11Khi mọi người đã qua hết, họ đứng nhìn Hòm Giao Ước của Chúa Hằng Hữu và các thầy tế lễ đi qua.

12Người thuộc đại tộc Ru-bên, đại tộc Gát, và phân nửa đại tộc Ma-na-se đều mang vũ khí đi trước đoàn dân, như Môi-se đã bảo họ.

13Họ gồm chừng 40.000 người, dẫn đầu toàn dân ra trận, dưới sự chứng giám của Chúa Hằng Hữu. Họ kéo vào đồng bằng Giê-ri-cô.

14Vậy, hôm ấy Chúa Hằng Hữu đã làm cho Giô-suê được toàn dân kính phục. Cũng như Môi-se, Giô-suê suốt đời được dân kính phục.

15Lúc ấy, Chúa Hằng Hữu phán bảo Giô-suê:

16“Hãy truyền cho các thầy tế lễ khiêng Hòm Giao Ước lên khỏi sông.”

17Vậy, Giô-suê ra lệnh cho các thầy tế lễ: “Hãy đi lên khỏi sông.”

18Vừa lúc các thầy tế lễ khiêng Hòm Giao Ước của Chúa Hằng Hữu từ giữa lòng sông bước lên đất khô rồi, thì nước sông Giô-đan lại chảy như cũ và tràn ra khắp nơi như trước.

19Người Ít-ra-ên sang sông Giô-đan ngày mười tháng giêng. Họ đóng trại tại Ghinh-ganh, một địa điểm phía đông thành Giê-ri-cô.

20Đó là nơi Giô-suê xếp mười hai tảng đá đem từ giữa Sông Giô-đan lên.

21Ông nhắc lại với mọi người: “Về sau, khi con cháu chúng ta muốn biết ý nghĩa của trụ đá này,

22chúng ta sẽ kể cho chúng nghe việc ‘qua sông Giô-đan như trên đất cạn’ của dân ta.

23Chúa Hằng Hữu, Đức Chúa Trời của anh em đã làm cho một khúc sông cạn ráo để anh em đi qua, cũng giống như lúc Ít-ra-ên vượt Biển Đỏ.

24Những việc này khiến cho các dân tộc khác trên đất biết rằng tay của Chúa Hằng Hữu rất mạnh, và khiến cho anh em luôn luôn kính sợ Chúa Hằng Hữu, Đức Chúa Trời của anh em.”

1And when they were passed over, the Lord said to Josue:

2Choose twelve men, one of every tribe:

3And command them to take out of the midst of the Jordan, where the feet of the priests stood, twelve very hard stones, which you shall set in the place of the camp, where you shall pitch your tents this night.

4And Josue called twelve men, whom he had chosen out of the children of Israel, one out of every tribe,

5And he said to them: Go before the ark of the Lord your God to the midst of the Jordan, and carry from thence every man a stone on your shoulders, according to the number of the children of Israel,

6That it may be a sign among you and when your children shall ask you tomorrow, saying: What mean these stones?

7You shall answer them: The waters of the Jordan ran off before the ark of the covenant of the Lord, when it passed over the same: therefore were these atones set for a monument of the children of Israel for ever.

8The children of Israel therefore did as Josue commanded them, carrying out of the channel of the Jordan twelve stones, as the Lord had commanded him, according to the number of the children of Israel, unto the place wherein they camped, and there they set them.

9And Josue put other twelve stones in the midst of the channel of the Jordan, where the priests stood that carried the ark of the covenant: and they are there until this present day.

10Now the priests that carried the ark, stood in the midst of the Jordan till all things were accomplished which the Lord had commanded Josue to speak to the people, and Moses had said to him. And the people made haste and passed over.

11And when they had all passed over, the ark also of the Lord passed over, and the priests went before the people.

12The children of Ruben also and Gad, and half the tribe of Manasses, went armed before the children of Israel as Moses had commanded them.

13And forty thousand fighting men by their troops, and bands, marched through the plains and fields of the city of Jericho.

14In that day the Lord magnified Josue in the sight of all Israel, that they should fear him, as they had feared Moses, while he lived.

15And he said to him:

16Command the priests, that carry the ark of the covenant, to come up out of the Jordan.

17And he commanded them, saying: Come ye up out of the Jordan.

18And when they that carried the ark of the covenant of the Lord, were come up, and began to tread on the dry ground, the waters returned into the channel, and ran as they were wont before.

19And the people came up out of the Jordan, the tenth day of the first month, and camped in Galgal, over against the east side of the city of Jericho.

20And the twelve stones which they had taken out of the channel of the Jordan, Josue pitched in Galgal,

21And said to the children of Israel: When your children shall ask their fathers, tomorrow, and shall say to them: What mean these stones?

22You shall teach them and say: Israel passed over this Jordan through the dry channel.

23The Lord your God drying up the waters thereof in your sight, until you passed over:

24As he had done before in the Red Sea, which he dried up till we passed through:

25That all the people of the earth may learn the most mighty hand of the Lord, that you also may fear the Lord your God for ever.
