1And it came to pass after these things, that one told Joseph, Behold, thy father is sick: and he took with him his two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim.

2And one told Jacob, and said, Behold, thy son Joseph cometh unto thee: and Israel strengthened himself, and sat upon the bed.

3And Jacob said unto Joseph, God Almighty appeared unto me at Luz in the land of Canaan, and blessed me,

4And said unto me, Behold, I will make thee fruitful, and multiply thee, and I will make of thee a multitude of people; and will give this land to thy seed after thee for an everlasting possession.

5¶ And now thy two sons, Ephraim and Manasseh, which were born unto thee in the land of Egypt before I came unto thee into Egypt, are mine; as Reuben and Simeon, they shall be mine.

6And thy issue, which thou begettest after them, shall be thine, and shall be called after the name of their brethren in their inheritance.

7And as for me, when I came from Padan, Rachel died by me in the land of Canaan in the way, when yet there was but a little way to come unto Ephrath: and I buried her there in the way of Ephrath; the same is Beth-lehem.

8And Israel beheld Joseph’s sons, and said, Who are these?

9And Joseph said unto his father, They are my sons, whom God hath given me in this place. And he said, Bring them, I pray thee, unto me, and I will bless them.

10Now the eyes of Israel were dim for age, so that he could not see. And he brought them near unto him; and he kissed them, and embraced them.

11And Israel said unto Joseph, I had not thought to see thy face: and, lo, God hath shewed me also thy seed.

12And Joseph brought them out from between his knees, and he bowed himself with his face to the earth.

13And Joseph took them both, Ephraim in his right hand toward Israel’s left hand, and Manasseh in his left hand toward Israel’s right hand, and brought them near unto him.

14And Israel stretched out his right hand, and laid it upon Ephraim’s head, who was the younger, and his left hand upon Manasseh’s head, guiding his hands wittingly; for Manasseh was the firstborn.

15¶ And he blessed Joseph, and said, God, before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac did walk, the God which fed me all my life long unto this day,

16The Angel which redeemed me from all evil, bless the lads; and let my name be named on them, and the name of my fathers Abraham and Isaac; and let them grow into a multitude in the midst of the earth.

17And when Joseph saw that his father laid his right hand upon the head of Ephraim, it displeased him: and he held up his father’s hand, to remove it from Ephraim’s head unto Manasseh’s head.

18And Joseph said unto his father, Not so, my father: for this is the firstborn; put thy right hand upon his head.

19And his father refused, and said, I know it, my son, I know it: he also shall become a people, and he also shall be great: but truly his younger brother shall be greater than he, and his seed shall become a multitude of nations.

20And he blessed them that day, saying, In thee shall Israel bless, saying, God make thee as Ephraim and as Manasseh: and he set Ephraim before Manasseh.

21And Israel said unto Joseph, Behold, I die: but God shall be with you, and bring you again unto the land of your fathers.

22Moreover I have given to thee one portion above thy brethren, which I took out of the hand of the Amorite with my sword and with my bow.

1Sau các việc đó, người ta nói với ông Giu-se : “Cha ông bị bệnh.” Ông đưa hai con trai là Mơ-na-se và Ép-ra-im đến.

2Người ta báo cho ông Gia-cóp rằng : “Có ông Giu-se, con cụ, đến thăm cụ.” Ông Ít-ra-en cố gượng dậy ngồi trên giường.

3Ông Gia-cóp nói với ông Giu-se : “Thiên Chúa toàn năng đã hiện ra với cha ở Lút trong đất Ca-na-an và chúc phúc cho cha.

4Người đã phán với cha : ‘Đây Ta làm cho ngươi sinh sôi nảy nở thật nhiều. Ta sẽ làm cho ngươi thành một cộng đồng nhiều dân nước, và sẽ ban đất này cho dòng dõi ngươi về sau làm sở hữu vĩnh viễn.’

5Bây giờ, hai đứa con trai con đã sinh được tại xứ Ai-cập trước khi cha đến Ai-cập với con, sẽ là của cha : Ép-ra-im và Mơ-na-se sẽ là của cha như Rưu-vên và Si-mê-ôn.

6Còn những đứa con mà con sinh ra sau hai đứa ấy sẽ là của con ; chúng sẽ được gọi bằng tên hai anh chúng để được hưởng gia tài.

7‘Phần cha, khi từ Pát-đan về, cha đã mất bà Ra-khen, trong đất Ca-na-an, khi còn cách Ép-ra-tha một quãng đường ; cha đã chôn người tại đó, trên đường đi Ép-ra-tha, tức là Bê-lem.’”

8Khi ông Ít-ra-en thấy các con trai ông Giu-se, thì hỏi : “Những đứa này là ai ?”

9Ông Giu-se thưa cha : “Chúng là những con trai mà Thiên Chúa đã ban cho con ở đây.” Ông Ít-ra-en nói tiếp : “Đem chúng đến cho cha, để cha chúc phúc cho chúng.”

10Mắt ông Ít-ra-en đã mờ vì tuổi già, ông không thể nhìn thấy nữa. Ông Giu-se đưa chúng lại gần ông, ông hôn và ôm chúng.

11Ông Ít-ra-en nói với ông Giu-se : “Cha không nghĩ rằng lại nhìn thấy mặt con, thế mà Thiên Chúa lại cho cha nhìn thấy cả dòng dõi con nữa !”

12Ông Giu-se kéo chúng ra khỏi đầu gối ông Ít-ra-en và cúi sấp mặt xuống đất.

13Ông Giu-se nắm lấy cả hai đứa, Ép-ra-im ở tay phải ông, tức là tay trái ông Ít-ra-en, Mơ-na-se ở tay trái ông, tức là tay phải ông Ít-ra-en, và đưa chúng đến gần ông Ít-ra-en.

14Ông Ít-ra-en đưa tay phải ra, đặt lên đầu Ép-ra-im là em, và đặt tay trái lên đầu Mơ-na-se ; ông bắt tréo tay, vì Mơ-na-se là con cả.

15“Xin Thiên Chúa là Đấng mà cha ông của cha là Áp-ra-ham và I-xa-ác đã bước đi trước tôn nhan, xin Thiên Chúa là mục tử chăn dắt cha từ khi cha chào đời cho đến ngày hôm nay,

16“Ước gì nhờ chúng, tên tuổi của cha và của cha ông cha là Áp-ra-ham và I-xa-ác được nhắc tới, và ước gì chúng lan tràn khắp xứ !”

17Ông Giu-se thấy cha đặt tay phải lên đầu Ép-ra-im thì không bằng lòng, nên ông cầm tay cha kéo ra khỏi đầu Ép-ra-im mà đưa lên đầu Mơ-na-se.

18Ông Giu-se nói với cha : “Thưa cha, xin đừng làm thế, vì thằng này mới là con đầu lòng, xin cha đặt tay phải lên đầu nó.”

19Nhưng cha ông từ chối và nói : “Cha biết, con ơi, cha biết : nó cũng sẽ trở thành một dân, và nó cũng sẽ lớn. Nhưng em nó sẽ lớn hơn nó và dòng dõi của em nó sẽ thành rất nhiều dân tộc.”

20Ông đặt Ép-ra-im trước Mơ-na-se.

21Rồi ông Ít-ra-en nói với ông Giu-se : “Này cha sắp chết, nhưng Thiên Chúa sẽ ở với các con và sẽ đưa các con về quê cha đất tổ.

22Còn cha, cha cho con thêm một phần hơn các anh em con, là thành Si-khem cha đã dùng gươm và cung của cha mà chiếm được từ tay người E-mô-ri.”
