2 Sử Ký

1After this the children of Moab, and the children of Ammon, and with them of the Ammonites, were gathered together to fight against Josaphat.

2And there came messengers, and told Josaphat, saying: There cometh a great multitude against thee from beyond the sea, and out of Syria, and behold they are in Asasonthamar, which is Engaddi.

3And Josaphat being seized with fear betook himself wholly to pray to the Lord, and he proclaimed a fast for all Juda.

4And Juda gathered themselves together to pray to the Lord: and all came out of their cities to make supplication to him.

5And Josaphat stood in the midst of the assembly of Juda, and Jerusalem, in the house of the Lord before the new court,

6And said: O Lord God of our fathers, thou art God in heaven, and rulest over all the kingdoms and nations, in thy hand is strength and power, and no one can resist thee.

7Didst not thou our God kill all the inhabitants of this land before thy people Israel, and gavest it to the seed of Abraham thy friend for ever?

8And they dwelt in it, and built in it a sanctuary to thy name, saying:

9If evils fall upon us, the sword of judgment, or pestilence, or famine, we will stand in thy presence before this house, in which thy name is called upon: and we will cry to thee in our afflictions, and thou wilt hear, and save us.

10Now therefore behold the children of Ammon, and of Moab, and mount Seir, through whose lands thou didst not allow Israel to pass, when they came out of Egypt, but they turned aside from them, and slew them not,

11Do the contrary, and endeavour to cast us out of the possession which thou hast delivered to us.

12O our God, wilt thou not then judge them? as for us we have not strength enough, to be able to resist this multitude, which cometh violently upon us. But as we know not what to do, we can only turn our eyes to thee.

13And all Juda stood before the Lord with their little ones, and their wives, and their children.

14And Jahaziel the son of Zacharias, the son of Banaias, the son of Jehiel, the son of Mathanias, a Levite of the sons of Asaph, was there, upon whom the spirit of the Lord came in the midst of the multitude,

15And he said: Attend ye, all Juda, and you that dwell in Jerusalem, and thou king Josaphat: Thus saith the Lord to you: Fear ye not, and be not dismayed at this multitude: for the battle is not yours, but God’s.

16Tomorrow you shall go down against them: for they will come up by the ascent named Sis, and you shall find them at the head of the torrent, which is over against the wilderness of Jeruel.

17It shall not be you that shall fight, but only stand with confidence, and you shall see the help of the Lord over you, O Juda, and Jerusalem: fear ye not, nor be you dismayed: tomorrow you shall go out against them, and the Lord will be with you.

18Then Josaphat, and Juda, and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem fell hat on the ground before the Lord, and adored him.

19And the Levites of the sons of Caath, and of the sons of Core praised the Lord the God of Israel with a loud voice, on high.

20And they rose early in the morning, and went out through the desert of Thecua: and as they were marching, Josaphat standing in the midst of them, said: Hear me, ye men of Juda, and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem: believe in the Lord your God, and you shall be secure: believe his prophets, and all things shall succeed well.

21And he gave counsel to the people, and appointed the singing men of the Lord, to praise him by their companies, and to go before the army, and with one voice to say: Give glory to the Lord, for his mercy endureth for ever.

22And when they began to sing praises, the Lord turned their ambushments upon themselves, that is to say, of the children of Ammon, and of Moab, and of mount Seir, who were come out to fight against Juda, and they were slain.

23For the children of Ammon, and of Moab, rose up against the inhabitants of mount Seir, to kill and destroy them: and when they had made an end of them, they turned also against one another, and destroyed one another.

24And when Juda came to the watch tower, that looketh toward the desert, they saw afar off all the country, for a great space, full of dead bodies, and that no one was left that could escape death.

25Then Josaphat came, and all the people with him to take away the spoils of the dead, and they found among the dead bodies, stuff of various kinds, and garments, and most precious vessels: and they took them for themselves, insomuch that they could not carry all, nor in three days take away the spoils, the booty was so great.

26And on the fourth day they were assembled in the valley of Blessing: for there they blessed the Lord, and therefore they called that place the valley of Blessing until this day.

27And every man of Juda, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem returned, and Josaphat at their head, into Jerusalem with great joy, because the Lord had made them rejoice over their enemies.

28And they came into Jerusalem with psalteries, and harps, and trumpets into the house of the Lord.

29And the fear of the Lord fell upon all the kingdoms of the lands when they heard that the Lord had fought against the enemies of Israel.

30And the kingdom of Josaphat was quiet, and God gave him peace round about.

31And Josaphat reigned over Juda, and he was five and thirty years old when he began to reign: and he reigned five and twenty years in Jerusalem: and the name of his mother was Azuba the daughter of Selahi.

32And he walked in the way of his father Asa, and departed not from it, doing the things that were pleasing before the Lord.

33But yet he took not away the high places, and the people had not yet turned their heart to the Lord the God of their fathers.

34But the rest of the acts of Josaphat, first and last, are written in the words of Jehu the son of Hanani, which he digested into the books of the kings of Israel.

35After these things Josaphat king of Juda made friendship with Ochozias king of Israel, whose works were very wicked.

36And he was partner with him in making ships, to go to Tharsis: and they made the ships in Asiongaber.

37And Eliezer the son of Dodau of Maresa prophesied to Josaphat, saying: Because thou hast made a league with Ochozias, the Lord hath destroyed thy works, and the ships are broken, and they could not go to Tharsis.

1Sau đó, con cái Mô-áp và con cái Am-mon, có những người Ma-ôn đi theo, đến gây chiến với vua Giơ-hô-sa-phát.

2Người ta báo tin cho vua Giơ-hô-sa-phát rằng : “Một đạo quân đông đảo từ bên kia biển, từ Ê-đôm, đến tấn công ngài, và này chúng đã ở Khát-xôn Ta-ma, tức là Ên Ghe-đi.”

3Vua Giơ-hô-sa-phát hoảng sợ và quyết tâm tìm kiếm ĐỨC CHÚA. Vua kêu gọi toàn thể Giu-đa ăn chay.

4Dân Giu-đa tập họp lại kêu cầu ĐỨC CHÚA. Từ khắp các thành của Giu-đa, người ta cũng đến kêu cầu ĐỨC CHÚA.

5Vua Giơ-hô-sa-phát đứng giữa cộng đoàn Giu-đa và Giê-ru-sa-lem trong Đền Thờ của ĐỨC CHÚA, trước sân mới,

6và cầu nguyện : “Lạy ĐỨC CHÚA là Thiên Chúa tổ tiên chúng con, chẳng phải Ngài là Thiên Chúa vừa ngự chốn trời cao, vừa thống trị các dân các nước, nắm trong tay sức mạnh và uy quyền, khiến không ai địch nổi Ngài đó sao ?

7Lạy Thiên Chúa chúng con, chẳng phải Ngài là Đấng đã đuổi cư dân xứ này, bắt nhường chỗ cho Ít-ra-en dân Ngài và ban đất ấy cho dòng dõi Áp-ra-ham, bạn thân của Ngài đến muôn đời đó sao ?

8Chính trên đất đó mà họ đã cư ngụ, đã xây một thánh điện kính danh Ngài. Họ nói :

9‘Nếu chẳng may chúng con gặp chinh chiến, bị trừng phạt, gặp dịch tễ hoặc đói kém, thì chúng con sẽ đứng trước Đền Thờ này, trước nhan Ngài đây, vì đây chính là nơi danh Ngài ngự. Trong cơn cùng khốn, chúng con sẽ kêu lên Ngài, Ngài sẽ lắng nghe và cứu giúp chúng con.

10Ngài thấy đó : con cái Am-mon, Mô-áp và dân vùng núi Xê-ia. Xưa kia khi Ít-ra-en rời khỏi đất Ai-cập, Ngài đã không cho phép đi vào đất của các dân này. Ngài đã bắt phải tránh xa chúng, chứ không được tiêu diệt.

11Nay các dân này sắp lấy oán đền ơn là trục xuất chúng con khỏi phần đất của Ngài, đất Ngài đã ban cho chúng con làm sản nghiệp.

12Lạy Thiên Chúa chúng con, chẳng lẽ Ngài không trừng phạt chúng ? Quả thật, chúng con không đủ sức địch nổi đám dân đông đảo đến tấn công chúng con đâu. Chúng con chỉ biết ngước mắt nhìn lên Ngài.’”

13Toàn thể dân Giu-đa, kể cả đàn bà con trẻ, đều đứng trước nhan ĐỨC CHÚA.

14Bấy giờ, giữa cộng đoàn, thần khí ĐỨC CHÚA xuống trên ông Gia-kha-di-ên con ông Dơ-khác-gia-hu, cháu ông Bơ-na-gia, ông này là con ông Giơ-y-ên, cháu ông Mát-tan-gia ; Gia-kha-di-ên là một thầy Lê-vi trong hàng con cháu ông A-xáp.

15Ông nói : “Toàn thể Giu-đa, dân cư Giê-ru-sa-lem và vua Giơ-hô-sa-phát, xin lắng tai nghe ! ĐỨC CHÚA phán với các ngài như sau : ‘Các ngươi đừng sợ, đừng khiếp đảm trước đám dân đông đảo này, vì cuộc chiến này không phải của các ngươi, nhưng là của Thiên Chúa.

16Sớm mai hãy xuống mà đánh chúng ; chúng sẽ đi lên theo triền dốc Xít và các ngươi sẽ gặp chúng ở cuối con suối đối diện với sa mạc Giơ-ru-ên.

17Trong trận này, các ngươi không phải chiến đấu, cứ án binh bất động mà xem ĐỨC CHÚA, Đấng ở với các ngươi, sẽ giải thoát các ngươi như thế nào. Sớm mai hãy ra đón chúng, và ĐỨC CHÚA sẽ ở với các ngươi.’”

18Vua Giơ-hô-sa-phát sấp mặt xuống đất và toàn thể Giu-đa cùng dân cư Giê-ru-sa-lem phủ phục trước ĐỨC CHÚA mà thờ lạy.

19Các thầy Lê-vi con cháu ông Cơ-hát và con cháu ông Cô-rắc đứng lên lớn tiếng ca tụng ĐỨC CHÚA, Thiên Chúa của Ít-ra-en.

20Họ thức dậy thật sớm và đi vào sa mạc Tơ-cô-a. Trong khi họ đi như thế, vua Giơ-hô-sa-phát đứng ra và nói : “Giu-đa và dân cư Giê-ru-sa-lem hãy nghe ta : ĐỨC CHÚA là Thiên Chúa các ngươi, cứ tin tưởng vào Người, các ngươi sẽ tồn tại ; cứ tin lời các ngôn sứ của Người, các ngươi sẽ chiến thắng.”

21Sau khi hội ý với dân, vua cắt đặt những người ca hát ngợi khen ĐỨC CHÚA. Họ mặc phẩm phục thánh, vừa đi trước quân binh vừa hát : “Hãy ngợi khen ĐỨC CHÚA, vì muôn ngàn đời, Chúa vẫn trọn tình thương.”

22Khi họ cất tiếng reo mừng và ca ngợi, thì ĐỨC CHÚA gây mâu thuẫn giữa hàng ngũ quân Am-mon, quân Mô-áp và dân vùng núi Xê-ia đang tiến đánh Giu-đa. Thế là chúng bị thảm bại.

23Con cái Am-mon và Mô-áp nổi lên chống lại dân cư vùng núi Xê-ia để tru diệt và quét sạch đám dân này. Thanh toán đám này xong, con cái Am-mon và Mô-áp lại giúp nhau tự huỷ diệt.

24Khi tới một nơi cao từ đó có thể nhìn xuống sa mạc được, quân Giu-đa quay nhìn đám đông, liền thấy tử thi nằm la liệt trên mặt đất, không một ai sống sót.

25Vua Giơ-hô-sa-phát và quân binh của vua đến thu chiến lợi phẩm ; họ thấy một đoàn vật rất đông cùng với của cải, áo quần và các vật dụng quý giá. Họ lượm lấy cho mình nhiều không thể mang hết được. Phải mất ba ngày mới thu hết chiến lợi phẩm, vì có rất nhiều.

26Ngày thứ tư họ họp đại hội ở thung lũng Bơ-ra-kha. Tại đây họ đã chúc tụng ĐỨC CHÚA ; vì thế cho đến ngày nay, người ta vẫn gọi nơi ấy là “thung lũng Bơ-ra-kha” (có nghĩa là ‘chúc tụng’).

27Sau đó, vua Giơ-hô-sa-phát dẫn đầu mọi người Giu-đa và Giê-ru-sa-lem vui sướng lên đường trở về Giê-ru-sa-lem, vì ĐỨC CHÚA đã ban cho họ niềm vui thoát khỏi quân thù.

28Họ trổi vang tiếng đàn cầm đàn sắt cùng với tiếng kèn, tiến vào Giê-ru-sa-lem, lên Đền Thờ ĐỨC CHÚA.

29Mọi nước mọi dân nghe biết rằng ĐỨC CHÚA đã chiến đấu chống quân thù của Ít-ra-en, thì đều khiếp sợ Người.

30Triều đại vua Giơ-hô-sa-phát được yên ổn và Thiên Chúa của vua ban cho vua được bình an tư bề.

31Vua Giơ-hô-sa-phát làm vua Giu-đa. Vua lên ngôi lúc ba mươi lăm tuổi và trị vì ở Giê-ru-sa-lem hai mươi lăm năm. Thân mẫu vua là bà A-du-va, ái nữ ông Sin-khi.

32Vua theo đường lối của phụ vương A-xa, không sai lệch, tức là làm điều ngay chính trước mắt ĐỨC CHÚA.

33Thế nhưng các nơi cao không biến đi hết, và dân chưa quyết tâm thờ Thiên Chúa tổ tiên mình.

34Các truyện còn lại về vua Giơ-hô-sa-phát, từ những việc đầu tiên đến những việc cuối cùng đã được ghi chép trong Sử biên niên của ông Giê-hu con ông Kha-na-ni. Sử biên niên này đã được đưa vào sách các Vua Ít-ra-en.

35Sau đó, Giơ-hô-sa-phát vua Giu-đa đã liên kết với A-khát-gia vua Ít-ra-en, một con người ăn ở gian ác.

36Vua liên kết với ông ta như vậy là để đóng tàu đi Tác-sít ; và nơi họ đóng tàu là E-xi-ôn Ghe-ve.

37Bấy giờ ông Ê-li-e-de con ông Đô-đa-va-hu người Ma-rê-sa nói tiên tri chống vua Giơ-hô-sa-phát rằng : “Vì vua liên kết với vua A-khát-gia-hu, nên ĐỨC CHÚA phá công việc của vua.” Quả thật đoàn tàu đã vỡ và không thể đi Tác-sít được.
