Genesis

1And the life of Sarah is a hundred and twenty and seven years — years of the life of Sarah;

2and Sarah dieth in Kirjath-Arba, which [is] Hebron, in the land of Caanan, and Abraham goeth in to mourn for Sarah, and to bewail her.

3And Abraham riseth up from the presence of his dead, and speaketh unto the sons of Heth, saying,

4'A sojourner and a settler I [am] with you; give to me a possession of a burying-place with you, and I bury my dead from before me.'

5And the sons of Heth answer Abraham, saying to him,

6'Hear us, my lord; a prince of God [art] thou in our midst; in the choice of our burying-places bury thy dead: none of us his burying-place doth withhold from thee, from burying thy dead.'

7And Abraham riseth and boweth himself to the people of the land, to the sons of Heth,

8and he speaketh with them, saying, 'If it is your desire to bury my dead from before me, hear me, and meet for me with Ephron, son of Zoar;

9and he giveth to me the cave of Machpelah, which he hath, which [is] in the extremity of his field; for full money doth he give it to me, in your midst, for a possession of a burying-place.'

10And Ephron is sitting in the midst of the sons of Heth, and Ephron the Hittite answereth Abraham in the ears of the sons of Heth, of all those entering the gate of his city, saying,

11'Nay, my lord, hear me: the field I have given to thee, and the cave that [is] in it, to thee I have given it; before the eyes of the sons of my people I have given it to thee — bury thy dead.'

12And Abraham boweth himself before the people of the land,

13and speaketh unto Ephron in the ears of the people of the land, saying, 'Only — if thou wouldest hear me — I have given the money of the field — accept from me, and I bury my dead there.'

14And Ephron answereth Abraham, saying to him,

15'My lord, hear me: the land — four hundred shekels of silver; between me and thee, what [is] it? — thy dead bury.'

16And Abraham hearkeneth unto Ephron, and Abraham weigheth to Ephron the silver which he hath spoken of in the ears of the sons of Heth, four hundred silver shekels, passing with the merchant.

17And established are the field of Ephron, which [is] in Machpelah, which [is] before Mamre, the field and the cave which [is] in it, and all the trees which [are] in the field, which [are] in all its border round about,

18to Abraham by purchase, before the eyes of the sons of Heth, among all entering the gate of his city.

19And after this hath Abraham buried Sarah his wife at the cave of the field of Machpelah before Mamre (which [is] Hebron), in the land of Canaan;

20and established are the field, and the cave which [is] in it, to Abraham for a possession of a burying-place, from the sons of Heth.

1Bà Xa-ra sống được một trăm hai mươi bảy tuổi : đó là những năm bà Xa-ra đã sống.

2Bà Xa-ra qua đời tại Kia-giát Ác-ba, tức là Khép-rôn, trong đất Ca-na-an. Ông Áp-ra-ham đến làm lễ chôn cất bà và than khóc bà.

3Ông đứng dậy, để người chết đó và nói với con cái ông Khết rằng :

4“Tôi là ngoại kiều và là người khách ở giữa các ông. Xin các ông nhượng cho tôi một miếng đất riêng làm phần mộ ở giữa các ông, để tôi đem người chết của tôi đi chôn.”

5Đáp lời ông Áp-ra-ham, con cái ông Khết nói rằng :

6“Thưa ngài, xin nghe chúng tôi nói. Ngài là một vị đầu mục của Thiên Chúa ở giữa chúng tôi, xin cứ chôn người chết của ngài trong ngôi mộ tốt nhất của chúng tôi. Không ai trong chúng tôi sẽ từ chối không cho ngài chôn người chết của ngài trong mộ của chúng tôi đâu !”

7Ông Áp-ra-ham đứng lên, sụp xuống lạy dân trong đất ấy, tức là con cái ông Khết,

8và nói với họ rằng : “Nếu quả thật các ông đồng ý cho tôi đem người chết của tôi đi chôn, thì xin nghe tôi nói và can thiệp với ông Ép-rôn, con ông Xô-kha cho tôi,

9để ông ấy nhượng cho tôi cái hang Mác-pê-la của ông, ở đầu cánh đồng của ông. Xin ông ấy nhượng lại cho tôi theo đúng giá, để tôi có một miếng đất riêng làm phần mộ ở giữa các ông.”

10Ông Ép-rôn, người Khết, bấy giờ đang ngồi giữa con cái ông Khết, trả lời cho ông Áp-ra-ham, có con cái ông Khết, tức là tất cả những người đến họp ở cửa thành ông ấy, đều nghe ; ông nói :

11“Không, thưa ngài, xin nghe tôi nói : cánh đồng ấy, tôi xin tặng ngài ; cái hang ở đó, tôi cũng xin tặng ngài. Trước mặt con cái dân tôi, tôi xin tặng ngài ; ngài cứ chôn người chết của ngài.”

12Ông Áp-ra-ham sụp xuống lạy dân trong đất ấy

13và nói với ông Ép-rôn, có dân trong xứ nghe thấy : “Xin ông vui lòng nghe tôi nói : tôi trả ông giá tiền cánh đồng, xin ông nhận lấy cho tôi, để tôi chôn người chết của tôi ở đó.”

14Ông Ép-rôn trả lời ông Áp-ra-ham rằng :

15“Thưa ngài, xin nghe tôi nói : một thửa đất giá bốn ký bạc, giữa tôi và ngài có là gì đâu ? Người chết của ngài, xin ngài cứ chôn !”

16Ông Áp-ra-ham nghe ông Ép-rôn ; ông Áp-ra-ham cân cho ông Ép-rôn số bạc mà con cái ông Khết đã nghe thấy ông này nói, là bốn ký bạc đang lưu hành trong giới con buôn.

17Thế là cánh đồng của ông Ép-rôn tại Mác-pê-la, đối diện với Mam-rê, cánh đồng và cái hang ở đó, mọi cây cối trong cánh đồng, đã trở thành

18sở hữu của ông Áp-ra-ham, có con cái ông Khết, tức là mọi kẻ đến họp ở cửa thành ông ấy, chứng kiến.

19Sau đó, ông Áp-ra-ham chôn bà Xa-ra, vợ ông, trong hang của cánh đồng Mác-pê-la, đối diện với Mam-rê, tức là Khép-rôn, tại đất Ca-na-an.

20Thế là cánh đồng của con cái ông Khết, và cái hang ở đó đã trở thành miếng đất riêng của ông Áp-ra-ham để làm phần mộ.
