Genesis

1And Sarai, Abram's wife, hath not borne to him, and she hath an handmaid, an Egyptian, and her name [is] Hagar;

2and Sarai saith unto Abram, 'Lo, I pray thee, Jehovah hath restrained me from bearing, go in, I pray thee, unto my handmaid; perhaps I am built up from her;' and Abram hearkeneth to the voice of Sarai.

3And Sarai, Abram's wife, taketh Hagar the Egyptian, her handmaid, at the end of the tenth year of Abram's dwelling in the land of Canaan, and giveth her to Abram her husband, to him for a wife,

4and he goeth in unto Hagar, and she conceiveth, and she seeth that she hath conceived, and her mistress is lightly esteemed in her eyes.

5And Sarai saith unto Abram, 'My violence [is] for thee; I — I have given mine handmaid into thy bosom, and she seeth that she hath conceived, and I am lightly esteemed in her eyes; Jehovah doth judge between me and thee.'

6And Abram saith unto Sarai, 'Lo, thine handmaid [is] in thine hand, do to her that which is good in thine eyes;' and Sarai afflicted her, and she fleeth from her presence.

7And a messenger of Jehovah findeth her by the fountain of water in the wilderness, by the fountain in the way [to] Shur,

8and he saith, 'Hagar, Sarai's handmaid, whence hast thou come, and whither dost thou go?' and she saith, 'From the presence of Sarai, my mistress, I am fleeing.'

9And the messenger of Jehovah saith to her, 'Turn back unto thy mistress, and humble thyself under her hands;'

10and the messenger of Jehovah saith to her, 'Multiplying I multiply thy seed, and it is not numbered from multitude;'

11and the messenger of Jehovah saith to her, 'Behold thou [art] conceiving, and bearing a son, and hast called his name Ishmael, for Jehovah hath hearkened unto thine affliction;

12and he is a wild-ass man, his hand against every one, and every one's hand against him — and before the face of all his brethren he dwelleth.'

13And she calleth the name of Jehovah who is speaking unto her, 'Thou [art], O God, my beholder;' for she said, 'Even here have I looked behind my beholder?'

14therefore hath one called the well, 'The well of the Living One, my beholder;' lo, between Kadesh and Bered.

15And Hagar beareth to Abram a son; and Abram calleth the name of his son, whom Hagar hath borne, Ishmael;

16and Abram [is] a son of eighty and six years in Hagar's bearing Ishmael to Abram.

1Bà Xa-rai, vợ ông Áp-ram, đã không sinh được cho ông một người con nào. Bà có một người nữ tỳ Ai-cập, tên là Ha-ga.

2Bà Xa-rai nói với ông Áp-ram : “Ông coi : ĐỨC CHÚA đã không cho phép tôi sinh con. Vậy xin ông đi lại với nữ tỳ của tôi ; may ra nhờ nó mà tôi sẽ có con.” Ông Áp-ram nghe lời bà Xa-rai.

3Mười năm sau khi ông Áp-ram lập nghiệp tại đất Ca-na-an, bà Xa-rai, vợ ông, đem nữ tỳ của bà là Ha-ga, người Ai-cập, hiến cho ông Áp-ram, chồng bà, để nàng làm vợ ông.

4Ông đi lại với Ha-ga và nàng có thai. Khi thấy mình có thai, thì nàng coi khinh bà chủ.

5Bà Xa-rai nói với ông Áp-ram : “Tôi bị sỉ nhục là tại ông đấy ! Chính tôi đã đặt nữ tỳ của tôi vào lòng ông. Thế mà từ khi nó thấy mình có thai, nó coi khinh tôi. Xin ĐỨC CHÚA phân xử giữa ông và tôi.”

6Ông Áp-ram nói với bà Xa-rai : “Nữ tỳ của bà ở trong tay bà đấy ; đối với nó, cái gì tốt cho bà thì bà cứ làm !” Bà Xa-rai hành hạ Ha-ga khiến nàng phải trốn bà.

7Sứ thần của ĐỨC CHÚA gặp thấy nàng gần một suối nước trong sa mạc, suối ở trên đường đi Sua.

8Người hỏi : “Ha-ga, nữ tỳ của Xa-rai, ngươi từ đâu đến và đi đâu ?” Nàng đáp : “Con đang trốn bà Xa-rai, chủ con.”

9Sứ thần của ĐỨC CHÚA bảo nàng : “Cứ về với bà chủ ngươi, và chịu luỵ bà ấy.”

10Sứ thần của ĐỨC CHÚA nói với nàng : “Ta sẽ làm cho dòng dõi ngươi ra thật nhiều đến mức không thể đếm được vì quá đông.”

11vì ĐỨC CHÚA đã nghe thấu nỗi khổ của ngươi.

12nó sẽ luôn đối đầu với tất cả anh em nó.”

13Nàng gọi tên ĐỨC CHÚA, Đấng phán với nàng, là : “Ngài là Thiên Chúa, Đấng thấy tôi”, vì nàng nói : “Phải chăng nơi đây tôi đã nhìn thấy, sau khi Người nhìn thấy tôi ?”

14Vì vậy người ta gọi giếng đó là giếng La-khai Rô-i. Giếng ấy ở giữa Ca-đê và Be-rét.

15Ha-ga sinh cho ông Áp-ram một con trai ; ông đặt tên cho đứa con mà Ha-ga đã sinh cho ông là Ít-ma-ên.

16Ông Áp-ram được tám mươi sáu tuổi khi Ha-ga sinh Ít-ma-ên cho ông.
