Esther

1On that night hath the sleep of the king fled away, and he saith to bring in the book of memorials of the Chronicles, and they are read before the king,

2and it is found written that Mordecai had declared concerning Bigthana and Teresh, two of the eunuchs of the king, of the keepers of the threshold, who sought to put forth a hand on king Ahasuerus.

3And the king saith, 'What honour and greatness hath been done to Mordecai for this?' And the servants of the king, his ministers, say, 'Nothing hath been done with him.'

4And the king saith, 'Who [is] in the court?' — and Haman hath come in to the outer court of the house of the king, to say to the king to hang Mordecai on the tree that he had prepared for him —

5and the servants of the king say unto him, 'Lo, Haman is standing in the court;' and the king saith, 'Let him come in.'

6And Haman cometh in, and the king saith to him, 'What — to do with the man in whose honour the king hath delighted?' And Haman saith in his heart, 'To whom doth the king delight to do honour more than myself?'

7And Haman saith unto the king, 'The man in whose honour the king hath delighted,

8let them bring in royal clothing that the king hath put on himself, and a horse on which the king hath ridden, and that the royal crown be put on his head,

9and to give the clothing and the horse into the hand of a man of the heads of the king, the chiefs, and they have clothed the man in whose honour the king hath delighted, and caused him to ride on the horse in a broad place of the city, and called before him: Thus it is done to the man in whose honour the king hath delighted.'

10And the king saith to Haman, 'Haste, take the clothing and the horse, as thou hast spoken, and do so to Mordecai the Jew, who is sitting in the gate of the king; there doth not fall a thing of all that thou hast spoken.'

11And Haman taketh the clothing, and the horse, and clothed Mordecai, and causeth him to ride in a broad place of the city, and calleth before him, 'Thus it is done to the man in whose honour the king hath delighted.'

12And Mordecai turneth back unto the gate of the king, and Haman hath been hastened unto his house mourning, and with covered head,

13and Haman recounteth to Zeresh his wife, and to all his friends, all that hath met him, and his wise men say to him, and Zeresh his wife, 'If Mordecai [is] of the seed of the Jews, before whom thou hast begun to fall, thou art not able for him, but dost certainly fall before him.'

14They are yet speaking with him, and eunuchs of the king have come, and haste to bring in Haman unto the banquet that Esther hath made.

1Chính đêm ấy, vua mất ngủ. Vua mới truyền đem tập Kỷ Yếu, sách Sử biên niên của hoàng triều ra đọc trước mặt vua.

2Trong sách có chép rằng : ông Moóc-đo-khai tố cáo hai viên thái giám gác cửa hoàng cung là Bi-gơ-than và Te-rét đã tìm cách tra tay hại vua A-suê-rô.

3Bấy giờ vua nói : “Đã làm gì để tuyên dương và đề cao Moóc-đo-khai vì công trạng đó chưa ?” Gia nhân tâu lại : “Thưa đức vua, chưa làm gì cho ông ấy cả.”

4Vua nói : “Ai ở ngoài sân đó ?” Lúc ấy, Ha-man vừa đến sân ngoài của hoàng cung để xin vua cho treo cổ ông Moóc-đo-khai lên giá đã dọn sẵn cho ông.

5Gia nhân liền thưa : “Có quan Ha-man đang đứng ngoài sân.” Vua nói : “Cho phép quan ấy vào.”

6Ha-man vào. Vua hỏi : “Nhà vua muốn tuyên dương một người thì nên làm gì cho người đó ?” Ha-man tự nhủ : “Ngoài ta ra, nào đức vua còn muốn tuyên dương ai được nữa ?”

7Nên Ha-man mới tâu vua : “Đức vua muốn tuyên dương ai,

8thì ngày lễ gia miện, đức vua đã mặc long bào nào, đã cỡi con ngựa nào,

9nay xin đem trao cho một trong các vị cao cấp nhất của đức vua, để vị này mặc long bào ấy cho người đức vua muốn tuyên dương, rồi đặt người đó lên cỡi con ngựa ấy mà đem đi dạo trong quảng trường của thành phố. Vị này sẽ đi trước người đó và hô to : ‘Đây là cách đức vua đãi ngộ người đức vua muốn tuyên dương.’”

10Vua liền nói : “Khanh mau lấy long bào và ngựa như vừa nói, và làm như vậy cho ông Moóc-đo-khai, người Do-thái. Tất cả các điều khanh vừa nói, đừng bỏ sót một chi tiết nào.”

11Ha-man lấy long bào mặc cho ông Moóc-đo-khai, đem ngựa ra cho ông cỡi, rồi vừa dẫn đi trong quảng trường của thành phố, vừa hô to trước mặt ông : “Đây là cách đức vua đãi ngộ người đức vua muốn tuyên dương.”

12Ông Moóc-đo-khai trở về cung môn ; còn Ha-man thì tức tốc chạy về nhà, lòng buồn bã, đầu trùm khăn.

13Ha-man thuật lại cho vợ là De-rết và cho mọi bạn hữu nghe tất cả những gì đã xảy ra. Các bạn hữu khôn ngoan đó và De-rết vợ y mới nói : “Nếu Moóc-đo-khai thuộc dòng giống Do-thái thì trước mặt hắn, ngài chỉ mới bắt đầu tuột dốc đó thôi. Ngài sẽ không thắng được hắn đâu. Trước mặt hắn, ngài sẽ tuột dốc thê thảm.”

14Câu chuyện còn dang dở thì các thái giám của vua đến. Họ vội vàng triệu Ha-man tới dự yến tiệc bà Ét-te đã dọn.
