1 Samuel

1A son of a year [is] Saul in his reigning, yea, two years he hath reigned over Israel,

2and Saul chooseth for himself three thousand [men] out of Israel; and two thousand are with Saul in Michmash, and in the hill-country of Beth-El; and a thousand have been with Jonathan in Gibeah of Benjamin; and the remnant of the people he hath sent each to his tents.

3And Jonathan smiteth the garrison of the Philistines which [is] in Geba, and the Philistines hear, and Saul hath blown with a trumpet through all the land, saying, 'Let the Hebrews hear.'

4And all Israel have heard, saying, 'Saul hath smitten the garrison of the Philistines,' and also, 'Israel hath been abhorred by the Philistines;' and the people are called after Saul to Gilgal.

5And the Philistines have been gathered to fight with Israel; thirty thousand chariots, and six thousand horsemen, and a people as the sand which [is] on the sea-shore for multitude; and they come up and encamp in Michmash, east of Beth-Aven.

6And the men of Israel have seen that they are distressed, that the people hath been oppressed, and the people hide themselves in caves, and in thickets, and in rocks, and in high places, and in pits.

7And Hebrews have passed over the Jordan to the land of Gad and Gilead; and Saul [is] yet in Gilgal, and all the people have trembled after him.

8And he waiteth seven days, according to the appointment with Samuel, and Samuel hath not come to Gilgal, and the people are scattered from off him.

9And Saul saith, 'Bring nigh unto me the burnt-offering, and the peace-offerings;' and he causeth the burnt-offering to ascend.

10And it cometh to pass at his completing to cause the burnt-offering to ascend, that lo, Samuel hath come, and Saul goeth out to meet him, to bless him;

11and Samuel saith, 'What hast thou done?' And Saul saith, 'Because I saw that the people were scattered from off me, and thou hadst not come at the appointment of the days, and the Philistines are gathered to Michmash,

12and I say, Now do the Philistines come down unto me to Gilgal, and the face of Jehovah I have not appeased; and I force myself, and cause the burnt-offering to ascend.'

13And Samuel saith unto Saul, 'Thou hast been foolish; thou hast not kept the command of Jehovah thy God, which He commanded thee, for now had Jehovah established thy kingdom over Israel unto the age;

14and, now, thy kingdom doth not stand, Jehovah hath sought for Himself a man according to His own heart, and Jehovah chargeth him for leader over His people, for thou hast not kept that which Jehovah commanded thee.'

15And Samuel riseth, and goeth up from Gilgal to Gibeah of Benjamin; and Saul inspecteth the people who are found with him, about six hundred men,

16and Saul, and Jonathan his son, and the people who are found with them, are abiding in Gibeah of Benjamin, and the Philistines have encamped in Michmash.

17And the destroyer goeth out from the camp of the Philistines — three detachments; the one detachment turneth unto the way of Ophrah, unto the land of Shual;

18and the one detachment turneth the way of Beth-Horon, and the one detachment turneth the way of the border which is looking on the valley of the Zeboim, toward the wilderness.

19And an artificer is not found in all the land of Israel, for the Philistines said, 'Lest the Hebrews make sword or spear;'

20and all Israel go down to the Philistines, to sharpen each his ploughshare, and his coulter, and his axe, and his mattock;

21and there hath been the file for mattocks, and for coulters, and for three-pronged rakes, and for the axes, and to set up the goads.

22And it hath been, in the day of battle, that there hath not been found sword and spear in the hand of any of the people who [are] with Saul and with Jonathan — and there is found to Saul and to Jonathan his son.

23And the station of the Philistines goeth out unto the passage of Michmash.

1Ông Sa-un được... tuổi khi lên làm vua, và ông đã làm vua cai trị Ít-ra-en được hai năm.

2Vua Sa-un chọn lấy ba ngàn người Ít-ra-en : hai ngàn ở với vua Sa-un tại Mích-mát và trong núi Bết Ên, một ngàn ở với ông Giô-na-than tại Ghíp-a thuộc Ben-gia-min, số còn lại trong dân thì vua cho ai nấy về lều mình.

3Ông Giô-na-than hạ viên trấn thủ Phi-li-tinh ở Ghe-va và người Phi-li-tinh nghe biết. Vua Sa-un cho thổi tù và trong toàn xứ. Ông nói : “Các người Híp-ri hãy nghe đây !”

4Toàn thể Ít-ra-en nghe tin rằng : vua Sa-un đã hạ viên trấn thủ Phi-li-tinh, và Ít-ra-en cũng đã trở nên đáng ghét đối với người Phi-li-tinh. Dân liền tập hợp lại sau lưng vua Sa-un ở Ghin-gan.

5Người Phi-li-tinh họp nhau lại để giao tranh với Ít-ra-en. Chúng có ba ngàn chiến xa, sáu ngàn kỵ binh và quân đông như cát ngoài bãi biển. Chúng lên đóng trại ở Mích-mát, về phía đông Bết A-ven.

6Người Ít-ra-en thấy mình lâm cảnh ngặt nghèo vì dân bị siết chặt. Dân trốn vào trong các hang, động, khe đá, hầm hố và hồ chứa nước.

7Vua Sa-un vẫn còn ở Ghin-gan và sau lưng vua toàn dân run sợ.

8Vua đợi bảy ngày, theo thời hạn ông Sa-mu-en đã ấn định, nhưng ông Sa-mu-en không đến Ghin-gan, và dân bỏ vua Sa-un đi tản mác.

9Vua Sa-un bảo : “Hãy đem lễ vật toàn thiêu và những lễ vật kỳ an đến cho ta.” Và vua đã dâng lễ toàn thiêu.

10Vua vừa dâng lễ toàn thiêu xong, thì này ông Sa-mu-en đến. Vua Sa-un ra đón chào ông.

11Ông Sa-mu-en hỏi : “Ngài đã làm gì thế ?” Vua Sa-un trả lời : “Khi tôi thấy dân bỏ tôi đi tản mác, còn ông lại không đến đúng thời hạn và người Phi-li-tinh họp nhau ở Mích-mát,

12thì tôi đã tự bảo : ‘Bây giờ người Phi-li-tinh sắp kéo xuống Ghin-gan đánh tôi mà tôi không làm cho nét mặt ĐỨC CHÚA dịu lại, nên buộc lòng tôi phải dâng lễ toàn thiêu.’”

13Ông Sa-mu-en nói với vua Sa-un : “Ngài đã hành động ngu xuẩn ! Ngài đã không giữ mệnh lệnh ĐỨC CHÚA, Thiên Chúa của ngài, đã truyền. Nếu ngài đã giữ thì bây giờ ĐỨC CHÚA đã làm cho vương quyền của ngài được vững bền mãi mãi.

14Nhưng bây giờ vương quyền của ngài sẽ không đứng vững. ĐỨC CHÚA đã tìm cho mình một kẻ như lòng Người mong muốn, và ĐỨC CHÚA đã đặt kẻ ấy làm người lãnh đạo dân Người, bởi vì ngài đã không giữ điều ĐỨC CHÚA truyền cho ngài.”

15Ông Sa-mu-en đứng dậy và từ Ghin-gan lên Ghíp-a thuộc Ben-gia-min. Vua Sa-un duyệt đám quân binh đang ở với vua : khoảng sáu trăm người.

16Vua Sa-un, ông Giô-na-than, con vua, và đám quân binh đang ở với hai ông thì giữ Ghe-va thuộc Ben-gia-min, còn người Phi-li-tinh thì đóng trại ở Mích-mát.

17Đạo quân tiễu trừ, chia thành ba toán, xuất phát từ trại Phi-li-tinh : một toán đi về hướng Óp-ra, ở xứ Su-an,

19Bấy giờ trong toàn đất Ít-ra-en không tìm được một thợ rèn, vì người Phi-li-tinh đã tự bảo : “Không thể để bọn Híp-ri chế tạo gươm hay giáo.”

20Toàn thể người Ít-ra-en xuống chỗ người Phi-li-tinh để rèn, người thì lưỡi cày, kẻ thì cái cuốc, cái rìu hay cái đục.

21Giá tiền công là hai chỉ bạc cho lưỡi cày và cái cuốc, một chỉ bạc để mài rìu và sửa gậy thúc bò.

22Vì vậy trong ngày giao tranh, không tìm được một cây gươm cây giáo ở tay người nào thuộc đám quân binh đang ở với vua Sa-un và ông Giô-na-than. Chỉ vua Sa-un và ông Giô-na-than, con vua, mới có.

23Người Phi-li-tinh ra đóng đồn trên ải Mích-mát.
