Ecclesiastes

1The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem:

2“Vanity of vanities,” says the Preacher; “Vanity of vanities, all is vanity.”

3What does man gain from all his labour in which he labours under the sun?

4One generation goes, and another generation comes; but the earth remains forever.

5The sun also rises, and the sun goes down, and hurries to its place where it rises.

6The wind goes towards the south, and turns around to the north. It turns around continually as it goes, and the wind returns again to its courses.

7All the rivers run into the sea, yet the sea is not full. To the place where the rivers flow, there they flow again.

8All things are full of weariness beyond uttering. The eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing.

9That which has been is that which shall be, and that which has been done is that which shall be done; and there is no new thing under the sun.

10Is there a thing of which it may be said, “Behold,this is new”? It has been long ago, in the ages which were before us.

11There is no memory of the former; neither shall there be any memory of the latter that are to come, amongst those that shall come after.

12I, the Preacher, was king over Israel in Jerusalem.

13I applied my heart to seek and to search out by wisdom concerning all that is done under the sky. It is a heavy burden that Godhas given to the sons of men to be afflicted with.

14I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and behold, all is vanity and a chasing after wind.

15That which is crooked can’t be made straight; and that which is lacking can’t be counted.

16I said to myself, “Behold, I have obtained for myself great wisdom above all who were before me in Jerusalem. Yes, my heart has had great experience of wisdom and knowledge.”

17I applied my heart to know wisdom, and to know madness and folly. I perceived that this also was a chasing after wind.

18For in much wisdom is much grief; and he who increases knowledge increases sorrow.

1Đây là lời ông Cô-he-lét, làm vua ngự tại Giê-ru-sa-lem. Ông là con vua Đa-vít.

2Ông Cô-he-lét nói : “Phù vân, quả là phù vân. Phù vân, quả là phù vân. Tất cả chỉ là phù vân.

3Lợi lộc gì đâu khi con người phải chịu đựng bao gian lao vất vả dưới ánh nắng mặt trời ?

4Thế hệ này đi, thế hệ kia đến, nhưng trái đất mãi mãi trường tồn.

5Mặt trời mọc rồi lặn ; mặt trời vội vã ngả xuống nơi nó đã mọc lên.

6Gió thổi xuống phía nam, rồi xoay về phía bắc : gió xoay lui xoay tới rồi gió đi ; gió trở qua trở lại lòng vòng.

7Mọi khúc sông đều xuôi ra biển, nhưng biển cũng chẳng đầy. Sông chảy tới đâu thì từ đó sông lại tiếp tục.

8Chuyện gì cũng nhàm chán, chẳng thể nói gì hơn. Mắt có nhìn bao nhiêu cũng chẳng thấy gì lạ, tai có nghe đến mấy cũng chẳng thấy gì mới.

9nào có chi mới lạ ?

10Nếu có điều gì đáng cho người ta nói : “Coi đây, cái mới đây này !”, thì điều ấy đã có trước chúng ta từ bao thế hệ rồi.

11Chẳng ai còn nhớ đến người xưa, và đối với những người đến sau thì cũng thế ; các thế hệ mai sau sẽ chẳng còn nhớ đến họ.

12Tôi là Cô-he-lét, tôi đã làm vua cai trị Ít-ra-en ở Giê-ru-sa-lem.

13Tôi đã chú tâm tìm hiểu và dùng trí khôn ngoan mà khảo sát tất cả những gì xảy ra dưới bầu trời : đó là công việc nhọc nhằn Thiên Chúa bắt con cái loài người phải để tâm thực hiện.

14Sau khi nhìn thấy mọi công việc thực hiện dưới ánh mặt trời, tôi nhận ra : tất cả chỉ là phù vân, chỉ là công dã tràng xe cát.

15Cái gì đã cong, uốn làm sao nổi, cái gì đã thiếu, đếm thế nào ra ?

16Tôi tự nhủ : Này tôi đã gom góp, đã thu thập được nhiều điều khôn ngoan hơn tất cả những vị đã cai trị Giê-ru-sa-lem trước tôi. Trí tôi đã học hỏi được nhiều điều khôn ngoan, tích luỹ được bao nhiêu kiến thức ;

17tôi đã chú tâm phân biệt đâu là khôn ngoan, tri thức, đâu là điên rồ, khờ dại. Ngay cả việc này nữa, tôi nhận thấy đó cũng chỉ là công dã tràng.

18càng thêm khổ đau.
