1When it was determined that we should sail for Italy, they delivered Paul and certain other prisoners to a centurion named Julius, of the Augustan band.

2Embarking in a ship of Adramyttium, which was about to sail to places on the coast of Asia, we put to sea, Aristarchus, a Macedonian of Thessalonica being with us.

3The next day, we touched at Sidon. Julius treated Paul kindly and gave him permission to go to his friends and refresh himself.

4Putting to sea from there, we sailed under the lee of Cyprus, because the winds were contrary.

5When we had sailed across the sea which is off Cilicia and Pamphylia, we came to Myra, a city of Lycia.

6There the centurion found a ship of Alexandria sailing for Italy, and he put us on board.

7When we had sailed slowly many days, and had come with difficulty opposite Cnidus, the wind not allowing us further, we sailed under the lee of Crete, opposite Salmone.

8With difficulty sailing along it we came to a certain place called Fair Havens, near the city of Lasea.

9When much time had passed and the voyage was now dangerous because the Fast had now already gone by, Paul admonished them

10and said to them, “Sirs, I perceive that the voyage will be with injury and much loss, not only of the cargo and the ship, but also of our lives.”

11But the centurion gave more heed to the master and to the owner of the ship than to those things which were spoken by Paul.

12Because the haven was not suitable to winter in, the majority advised going to sea from there, if by any means they could reach Phoenix and winter there, which is a port of Crete, looking southwest and northwest.

13When the south wind blew softly, supposing that they had obtained their purpose, they weighed anchor and sailed along Crete, close to shore.

14But before long, a stormy wind beat down from shore, which is called Euroclydon.

15When the ship was caught and couldn’t face the wind, we gave way to it and were driven along.

16Running under the lee of a small island called Clauda, we were able, with difficulty, to secure the boat.

17After they had hoisted it up, they used cables to help reinforce the ship. Fearing that they would run aground on the Syrtis sand bars, they lowered the sea anchor, and so were driven along.

18As we laboured exceedingly with the storm, the next day they began to throw things overboard.

19On the third day, they threw out the ship’s tackle with their own hands.

20When neither sun nor stars shone on us for many days, and no small storm pressed on us, all hope that we would be saved was now taken away.

21When they had been long without food, Paul stood up in the middle of them and said, “Sirs, you should have listened to me, and not have set sail from Crete and have gotten this injury and loss.

22Now I exhort you to cheer up, for there will be no loss of life amongst you, but only of the ship.

23For there stood by me this night an angel, belonging to the God whose I am and whom I serve,

24saying, ‘Don’t be afraid, Paul. You must stand before Caesar. Behold, God has granted you all those who sail with you.’

25Therefore, sirs, cheer up! For I believe God, that it will be just as it has been spoken to me.

26But we must run aground on a certain island.”

27But when the fourteenth night had come, as we were driven back and forth in the Adriatic Sea, about midnight the sailors surmised that they were drawing near to some land.

28They took soundings and found twenty fathoms.After a little while, they took soundings again, and found fifteen fathoms.

29Fearing that we would run aground on rocky ground, they let go four anchors from the stern, and wished for daylight.

30As the sailors were trying to flee out of the ship and had lowered the boat into the sea, pretending that they would lay out anchors from the bow,

31Paul said to the centurion and to the soldiers, “Unless these stay in the ship, you can’t be saved.”

32Then the soldiers cut away the ropes of the boat and let it fall off.

33While the day was coming on, Paul begged them all to take some food, saying, “Today is the fourteenth day that you wait and continue fasting, having taken nothing.

34Therefore I beg you to take some food, for this is for your safety; for not a hair will perish from any of your heads.”

35When he had said this and had taken bread, he gave thanks to God in the presence of all; then he broke it and began to eat.

36Then they all cheered up, and they also took food.

37In all, we were two hundred and seventy-six souls on the ship.

38When they had eaten enough, they lightened the ship, throwing out the wheat into the sea.

39When it was day, they didn’t recognise the land, but they noticed a certain bay with a beach, and they decided to try to drive the ship onto it.

40Casting off the anchors, they left them in the sea, at the same time untying the rudder ropes. Hoisting up the foresail to the wind, they made for the beach.

41But coming to a place where two seas met, they ran the vessel aground. The bow struck and remained immovable, but the stern began to break up by the violence of the waves.

42The soldiers’ counsel was to kill the prisoners, so that none of them would swim out and escape.

43But the centurion, desiring to save Paul, stopped them from their purpose, and commanded that those who could swim should throw themselves overboard first to go towards the land;

44and the rest should follow, some on planks and some on other things from the ship. So they all escaped safely to the land.

Phao-lô Đáp Tàu Đi La Mã

1Đến ngày ấn định, chúng tôi lên tàu qua Ý-đại-lợi. Phao-lô và mấy tù nhân khác được giao cho Đội trưởng Giu-lơ, thuộc trung đoàn Âu-gút trông coi.

2Chúng tôi xuống tàu của thành A-đa-mi; tàu này sắp chạy và nghé qua các hải cảng Tiểu Á. Có A-ri-tạc người Ma-xê-đoan, quê ở Tê-sa-lô-ni-ca cùng đi với chúng tôi.

3Hôm sau, chúng tôi đến cảng Si-đôn. Giu-lơ đối xử với Phao-lô rất tử tế, cho phép ông lên bờ thăm bạn hữu và được họ tiếp tế.

4Chúng tôi tiếp tục cuộc hành trình. Vì gió ngược tàu phải vòng lên hướng bắc đảo Síp đi giữa đảo và đất liền.

5Vượt qua hải phận Si-li-si và Bam-phi-ly, chúng tôi đến cảng My-ra thuộc xứ Ly-si.

6Đội trưởng Giu-lơ tìm được một chiếc tàu từ A-léc-xan-ri-a đến, sắp đi Ý-đại-lợi, nên cho chúng tôi xuống tàu đó.

7Tàu phải chạy chậm và vất vả nhiều mới tới ngang thành Cơ-nít. Vì gió quá mạnh, chúng tôi phải chạy dọc theo bờ đảo Cơ-rết, đối ngang Sanh-môn.

8Men theo bờ cách chật vật, chúng tôi đến My-ra, gần thành La-sê.

9Chúng tôi dừng tại My-ra khá lâu. Thời tiết càng thêm bất lợi cho cuộc vượt biển, vì tiết thu phân đã qua, nên Phao-lô nêu ý kiến với các viên quan trên tàu.

10Ông nói: “Thưa các ông, tôi nhận thấy cuộc hải trình này rất nguy hiểm, không những chiếc tàu và hàng hóa bị thiệt hại mà cả sinh mạng chúng ta cũng lâm nguy!”

11Nhưng Đội trưởng Giu-lơ không quan tâm, chỉ nghe lời thuyền trưởng và chủ tàu thôi.

12Vì My-ra không thuận lợi cho tàu đậu mùa Đông, nên đa số đồng ý ra khơi và cố gắng đến Phê-nít tạm trú qua mùa Đông. Cảng này thuộc đảo Cơ-rết, nhìn ra hướng tây bắc và tây nam.

Trận Bão Biển

13Gió nam bắt đầu thổi nhẹ, thủy thủ tưởng gặp được ngày thuận gió, liền nhổ neo cho tàu chạy men theo bờ biển Cơ-rết.

14Nhưng thời tiết thình lình thay đổi, bão thổi mạnh hướng đông bắc,

15đẩy tàu ra khơi. Vì không thể đưa tàu vào bờ, họ để mặc cho tàu trôi theo chiều gió.

16Tàu trôi ngang đảo nhỏ Cơ-lô-đa, chúng tôi vào chỗ khuất gió. Chúng tôi phải chật vật lắm mới trục được chiếc thuyền cứu nạn kéo theo tàu.

17Rồi, thủy thủ dùng dây thừng ràng đáy tàu lại cho chắc vì sợ tàu mắc cạn trên bãi cát nên họ hạ buồm xuống, rồi để mặc cho gió đưa tàu đi.

18Qua ngày sau, cuồng phong càng thổi mạnh, họ bắt đầu ném hàng hóa xuống biển.

19Đến ngày kế tiếp, họ tự tay vất bỏ mọi dụng cụ hàng hải ra khỏi tàu.

20Cuồng phong tiếp tục thổi, suốt nhiều ngày không nhìn thấy mặt trời, chúng tôi chẳng còn hy vọng thoát nạn.

21Thấy mọi người nhịn ăn đã lâu, Phao-lô bước ra khích lệ: “Thưa anh em, nếu anh em nghe tôi, đừng rời khỏi Cơ-rết, chắc chúng ta đã tránh được những thiệt hại mất mát này.

22Bây giờ anh em hãy can đảm lên! Không một ai trong chúng ta sẽ bị thiệt mạng, chỉ phải mất chiếc tàu này thôi.

23Vì đêm qua, một thiên sứ của Đức Chúa Trời, là Đấng tôi thờ phượng và phục vụ, đến đứng bên cạnh,

24bảo tôi: ‘Phao-lô, đừng sợ! Vì con sẽ ra ứng hầu trước Sê-sa! Đức Chúa Trời cũng sẽ cứu mạng những bạn đồng hành với con.’

25Vậy, anh em hãy can đảm! Tôi tin chắc Đức Chúa Trời sẽ thực hiện mọi điều Ngài hứa,

26và chúng ta sẽ tấp vào một hòn đảo.”

Đắm Tàu

27Đêm thứ mười bốn, chúng tôi bị gió bão dồi dập trong vùng biển A-đơ-ria. Khoảng nửa đêm, thủy thủ tưởng đã đến gần bờ.

28Họ thả dây dò, thấy sâu độ 37 mét. Ít lâu sau, chỉ còn 27 mét.

29Sợ tàu đâm vào bờ đá, họ hạ bốn chiếc neo sau lái xuống biển rồi cầu trời cho mau sáng.

30Nhưng các thủy thủ định bỏ tàu trốn, lấy cớ đi thả neo đàng mũi tàu để hạ chiếc thuyền con xuống biển.

31Phao-lô bảo viên đội trưởng và quân lính: “Các ông không thể thoát nạn nếu những người kia rời tàu.”

32Quân lính liền cắt đứt dây, chiếc thuyền con rơi xuống biển.

33Lúc trời gần sáng, Phao-lô khuyên mọi người: “Đã mười bốn ngày nay anh em không ăn gì cả.

34Bây giờ nên ăn để lấy sức. Dù một sợi tóc anh em cũng chẳng mất đâu!”

35Phao-lô lấy bánh tạ ơn Đức Chúa Trời trước mặt mọi người rồi bẻ ra ăn.

36Được khích lệ, mọi người đều ăn bánh.

37Có tất cả 276 người trong tàu.

38Ăn xong, họ ném hết lương thực xuống biển cho nhẹ tàu.

39Trời vừa sáng, họ thấy một cái vịnh có bãi cát, nhưng không biết thuộc hải phận nào. Bàn tính phương cách đưa tàu vào bãi xong,

40họ cắt neo bỏ lại dưới biển, mở dây cột bánh lái rồi trương buồm mũi cho gió đưa tàu vào bờ.

41Tàu trôi vào bãi cát bị mắc cạn, mũi tàu cắm vào cát không xê dịch được, còn đằng lái bị sóng đánh dữ dội vỡ tan tành.

42Quân lính đề nghị giết hết tù nhân, sợ có người bơi vào bờ trốn thoát.

43Vì muốn cứu Phao-lô, Đội trưởng Giu-lơ bác bỏ đề nghị ấy. Ông ra lệnh cho ai biết bơi cứ nhảy xuống nước, bơi vào bờ trước.

44Những người còn lại bám vào tấm ván hoặc mảnh tàu. Thế là mọi người đều vào bờ an toàn.
