Hội Nghị Giáo Hội tại Giê-ru-sa-lem

1Phao-lô và Ba-na-ba đang ở An-ti-ốt, một nhóm người từ xứ Giu-đê xuống, dạy các tín hữu: “Nếu không chịu cắt bì theo luật Môi-se, anh em không được cứu rỗi.”

2Sau cuộc tranh luận sôi nổi, mọi người quyết định cử Phao-lô và Ba-na-ba cùng đi với mấy người trong nhóm ấy lên Giê-ru-sa-lem trình bày vấn đề cho các sứ đồ và trưởng lão.

3Hội Thánh tiễn họ lên Giê-ru-sa-lem, và họ ghé qua xứ Phê-ni-xi và xứ Sa-ma-ri, họ tường thuật việc các dân ngoại trở về với Chúa, nên anh em tín hữu rất vui mừng.

4Tới Giê-ru-sa-lem, họ được Hội Thánh, các sứ đồ, và trưởng lão tiếp đón. Phao-lô và Ba-na-ba trình báo mọi việc Chúa đã cùng làm với mình.

5Tuy nhiên, có mấy thầy Pha-ri-si đã tin Chúa, đứng lên yêu cầu: “Phải làm lễ cắt bì cho các tín hữu dân ngoại và buộc họ phải giữ luật pháp Môi-se.”

6Các sứ đồ và trưởng lão họp lại để cứu xét việc ấy.

7Sau khi thảo luận khá lâu, Phi-e-rơ đứng lên phát biểu: “Thưa anh em, trước đây Đức Chúa Trời đã chọn tôi giữa vòng anh em, sai đi truyền giảng Phúc Âm cho dân ngoại để họ tin Chúa, như anh em đã biết.

8Đức Chúa Trời là Đấng biết rõ lòng người, đã minh xác việc Ngài tiếp nhận dân ngoại bằng cách ban Chúa Thánh Linh cho họ cũng như cho chúng ta.

9Chúa không phân biệt họ với chúng ta vì Ngài cũng tẩy sạch lòng họ một khi họ tin nhận Chúa.

10Như thế, tại sao anh em dám thách thức Chúa và quàng vào cổ tín hữu dân ngoại cái ách mà tổ phụ chúng ta và chính chúng ta chẳng từng mang nổi?

11Anh em không tin chúng ta được cứu chỉ nhờ ân sủng của Chúa Giê-xu cũng như họ sao?”

12Cả hội nghị yên lặng nghe Phao-lô và Ba-na-ba kể lại những phép lạ và việc diệu kỳ Chúa đã dùng họ thực hiện giữa các dân ngoại.

13Nghe tường trình xong, Gia-cơ tuyên bố: “Xin anh em lưu ý.

14Phi-e-rơ vừa kể lại lúc Chúa mới thăm viếng các dân ngoại lần đầu, Ngài đã cứu vớt một số người để làm rạng Danh Ngài.

15Việc ấy phù hợp với lời Chúa trong sách tiên tri:

16‘Sau đó, Ta sẽ quay lại,dựng trại Đa-vít đã sụp đổ.Ta sẽ tu bổ những chỗ đổ nátvà xây dựng lại,

17hầu những người còn lại trong nhân loại, có thể tìm kiếm Chúa Hằng Hữu,kể cả dân ngoại— là những người mang Danh Ta. Chúa Hằng Hữu đã phán vậy—

18Chúa đã báo trước những việc ấy từ xưa.’

19Theo ý kiến tôi, không nên tạo khó khăn cho dân ngoại mới trở lại với Đức Chúa Trời.

20Chỉ nên viết thư căn dặn họ đừng ăn của cúng thần tượng, đừng gian dâm, đừng ăn máu, và thịt thú vật chết ngạt.

21Vì khắp các đô thị đều có người giảng giải các luật lệ đó trong luật pháp Môi-se vào mỗi ngày Sa-bát, trong các hội đường Do Thái qua nhiều thế hệ rồi.”

Bức Thư Gửi Tín Hữu Dân Ngoại

22Các sứ đồ, trưởng lão, và cả Hội Thánh đồng ý cử hai người trong giới lãnh đạo Hội Thánh là Giu-đa (còn gọi là Ba-sa-ba) và Si-la cùng đi An-ti-ốt với Phao-lô và Ba-na-ba.

23Họ mang theo bức thư nội dung như sau: “Các sứ đồ, trưởng lão và anh em tín hữu tại Giê-ru-sa-lem. Thân gửi anh em tín hữu dân ngoại tại An-ti-ốt, Sy-ri và Si-li-si.

24Chúng tôi nghe có mấy người từ đây đi ra, đã gây hoang mang và làm rối loạn tinh thần anh em. Chúng tôi không hề sai họ làm việc ấy.

25Vì thế chúng tôi đồng tâm hiệp ý lựa chọn hai đại biểu đi theo hai anh em thân yêu của chúng tôi là Ba-na-ba và Phao-lô,

26hai người đã liều chết truyền giảng Danh Chúa Cứu Thế Giê-xu.

27Chúng tôi cử Giu-đa và Si-la đến trình bày trực tiếp cho anh em vấn đề này.

28Chúa Thánh Linh và chúng tôi đều không đặt thêm gánh nặng gì cho anh em ngoài mấy điều cần thiết:

29Anh em đừng ăn của cúng thần tượng, máu, thịt thú vật chết ngạt, và đừng gian dâm. Anh em nên tránh những điều ấy. Thân ái.”

30Phái đoàn lên đường đến thành An-ti-ốt, triệu tập Hội Thánh và trao bức thư.

31Đọc thư xong, các tín hữu dân ngoại đều vui mừng vì được khích lệ.

32Giu-đa và Si-la, cả hai tiên tri vốn có ân tứ giảng dạy, giãi bày lời Chúa để khích lệ và củng cố đức tin các tín hữu.

33Hai người ở tại An-ti-ốt ít lâu rồi anh em tiễn họ về Hội Thánh Giê-ru-sa-lem.

34Nhưng Si-la quyết định ở lại.

35Phao-lô và Ba-na-ba cũng ở lại An-ti-ốt hợp tác với nhiều anh em, tiếp tục giảng dạy Đạo Chúa.

Phao-lô và Ba-na-ba Chia Rẽ

36Sau một thời gian, Phao-lô đề nghị với Ba-na-ba: “Chúng ta nên trở lại thăm viếng anh em tín hữu tại các thành phố chúng ta đã truyền bá Đạo Chúa!”

37Ba-na-ba đồng ý và muốn đem Mác đi theo.

38Nhưng Phao-lô không đồng ý, vì trong chuyến trước, khi đến Bam-phi-ly, Mác đã bỏ cuộc về quê.

39Vì bất đồng ý kiến, nên hai người chia tay. Ba-na-ba đem Mác xuống tàu qua đảo Síp.

40Còn Phao-lô chọn Si-la rồi lên đường, sau khi được anh em giao thác mình cho ân sủng của Chúa.

41Ông thăm viếng xứ Sy-ri và Si-li-si, giúp các Hội thánh thêm vững mạnh.

1And certain men which came down from Judæa taught the brethren, and said, Except ye be circumcised after the manner of Moses, ye cannot be saved.

2When therefore Paul and Barnabas had no small dissension and disputation with them, they determined that Paul and Barnabas, and certain other of them, should go up to Jerusalem unto the apostles and elders about this question.

3And being brought on their way by the church, they passed through Phenice and Samaria, declaring the conversion of the Gentiles: and they caused great joy unto all the brethren.

4And when they were come to Jerusalem, they were received of the church, and of the apostles and elders, and they declared all things that God had done with them.

5But there rose up certain of the sect of the Pharisees which believed, saying, That it was needful to circumcise them, and to command them to keep the law of Moses.

6¶ And the apostles and elders came together for to consider of this matter.

7And when there had been much disputing, Peter rose up, and said unto them, Men and brethren, ye know how that a good while ago God made choice among us, that the Gentiles by my mouth should hear the word of the gospel, and believe.

8And God, which knoweth the hearts, bare them witness, giving them the Holy Ghost, even as he did unto us;

9And put no difference between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith.

10Now therefore why tempt ye God, to put a yoke upon the neck of the disciples, which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear?

11But we believe that through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ we shall be saved, even as they.

12¶ Then all the multitude kept silence, and gave audience to Barnabas and Paul, declaring what miracles and wonders God had wrought among the Gentiles by them.

13¶ And after they had held their peace, James answered, saying, Men and brethren, hearken unto me:

14Simeon hath declared how God at the first did visit the Gentiles, to take out of them a people for his name.

15And to this agree the words of the prophets; as it is written,

16After this I will return, and will build again the tabernacle of David, which is fallen down; and I will build again the ruins thereof, and I will set it up:

17That the residue of men might seek after the Lord, and all the Gentiles, upon whom my name is called, saith the Lord, who doeth all these things.

18Known unto God are all his works from the beginning of the world.

19Wherefore my sentence is, that we trouble not them, which from among the Gentiles are turned to God:

20But that we write unto them, that they abstain from pollutions of idols, and from fornication, and from things strangled, and from blood.

21For Moses of old time hath in every city them that preach him, being read in the synagogues every sabbath day.

22Then pleased it the apostles and elders, with the whole church, to send chosen men of their own company to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas; namely, Judas surnamed Barsabas, and Silas, chief men among the brethren:

23And they wrote letters by them after this manner; The apostles and elders and brethren send greeting unto the brethren which are of the Gentiles in Antioch and Syria and Cilicia:

24Forasmuch as we have heard, that certain which went out from us have troubled you with words, subverting your souls, saying, Ye must be circumcised, and keep the law: to whom we gave no such commandment:

25It seemed good unto us, being assembled with one accord, to send chosen men unto you with our beloved Barnabas and Paul,

26Men that have hazarded their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

27We have sent therefore Judas and Silas, who shall also tell you the same things by mouth.

28For it seemed good to the Holy Ghost, and to us, to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things;

29That ye abstain from meats offered to idols, and from blood, and from things strangled, and from fornication: from which if ye keep yourselves, ye shall do well. Fare ye well.

30So when they were dismissed, they came to Antioch: and when they had gathered the multitude together, they delivered the epistle:

31Which when they had read, they rejoiced for the consolation.

32And Judas and Silas, being prophets also themselves, exhorted the brethren with many words, and confirmed them.

33And after they had tarried there a space, they were let go in peace from the brethren unto the apostles.

34Notwithstanding it pleased Silas to abide there still.

35Paul also and Barnabas continued in Antioch, teaching and preaching the word of the Lord, with many others also.

36¶ And some days after Paul said unto Barnabas, Let us go again and visit our brethren in every city where we have preached the word of the Lord, and see how they do.

37And Barnabas determined to take with them John, whose surname was Mark.

38But Paul thought not good to take him with them, who departed from them from Pamphylia, and went not with them to the work.

39And the contention was so sharp between them, that they departed asunder one from the other: and so Barnabas took Mark, and sailed unto Cyprus;

40And Paul chose Silas, and departed, being recommended by the brethren unto the grace of God.

41And he went through Syria and Cilicia, confirming the churches.
