Ê-li Được Cất Lên Trời

1Đã đến lúc Chúa Hằng Hữu đem Ê-li lên trời trong một trận gió lốc, Ê-li bảo Ê-li-sê khi sắp rời Ghinh-ganh:

2“Con ở lại đây, vì Chúa Hằng Hữu phán bảo thầy đi Bê-tên.” Nhưng Ê-li-sê đáp: “Con thề với Chúa Hằng Hữu và với thầy rằng con sẽ không rời thầy.” Vậy, hai thầy trò đi Bê-tên.

3Môn đệ các tiên tri ở Bê-tên đi đón thầy trò Ê-li và nói với Ê-li-sê: “Anh có biết hôm nay Chúa Hằng Hữu sẽ đem thầy của anh lên trời không?” Ê-li-sê đáp: “Tôi biết chứ! Không cần các anh nói.”

4Ê-li lại bảo Ê-li-sê: “Con ở lại đây, vì Chúa Hằng Hữu phán bảo thầy đi Giê-ri-cô.” Ê-li-sê cương quyết: “Con không rời thầy. Con thề với Chúa Hằng Hữu và với thầy như thế.” Và thế là hai thầy trò cùng đi Giê-ri-cô.

5Môn đệ các tiên tri ở Giê-ri-cô ra đón, nói với Ê-li-sê: “Hôm nay là ngày Chúa Hằng Hữu đem thầy của anh lên trời, anh biết đó chứ?” Ê-li-sê đáp: “Tôi biết chứ. Các anh không cần nói.”

6Ê-li nói với Ê-li-sê lần thứ ba: “Con ở lại đây, vì Chúa Hằng Hữu phán bảo thầy đến Sông Giô-đan.” Ê-li-sê vẫn khăng khăng: “Con không rời thầy. Con thề với Chúa Hằng Hữu và với thầy như thế.” Vậy, hai thầy trò tiếp tục đi.

7Họ đến đứng bên bờ sông Giô-đan. Có năm mươi người trong số các môn đệ của các tiên tri đi theo, đến đứng cách hai người một quãng.

8Ê-li lấy chiếc áo choàng cuộn lại, cầm áo đập xuống nước, nước rẽ ra hai bên. Hai người đi qua trên đất khô.

9Qua bờ bên kia, Ê-li nói với Ê-li-sê: “Con muốn xin thầy điều gì trước khi thầy được đem đi?” Ê-li-sê thưa: “Xin thần của thầy tác động gấp đôi trên con để con tiếp nối chức vụ của thầy.”

10Ê-li nói: “Con xin một việc khó. Nhưng nếu con thấy ta lúc ta được cất lên, thì con sẽ toại nguyện; nếu không, việc sẽ không thành.”

11Trong lúc hai người vừa đi vừa nói chuyện, đột nhiên có một chiếc xe bằng lửa do một đoàn ngựa cũng bằng lửa kéo, phân rẽ hai người ra hai bên, và một cơn gió lốc đem Ê-li lên trời.

12Thấy cảnh tượng ấy, Ê-li-sê la lớn lên: “Cha ơi! Cha ơi! Xe và kỵ binh của Ít-ra-ên!” Đến lúc không còn thấy bóng thầy nữa, Ê-li-sê nắm áo mình, xé ra trong tâm trạng sầu não.

13Ông nhặt chiếc áo choàng của Ê-li rơi xuống, quay về bờ sông Giô-đan,

14vừa cầm áo đập xuống nước, vừa kêu lên: “Chúa Hằng Hữu, Thần của Ê-li ở đâu?” Nước sông rẽ ra hai bên và Ê-li-sê đi qua.

15Nhóm môn đệ các tiên tri ở lại Giê-ri-cô, bên kia sông, thấy thế bảo nhau: “Thần của Ê-li đã ở lại với Ê-li-sê.” Họ đi ra đón Ê-li-sê, cung kính cúi chào,

16và nói: “Các đầy tớ thầy có năm mươi người lực lưỡng nhất tại đây. Nếu thầy muốn, chúng tôi sẽ sai họ đi tìm chủ thầy. Biết đâu Thần Linh của Chúa đem chủ thầy lên, rồi đặt xuống trên một ngọn núi, hoặc tại một thung lũng nào chăng?” Ê-li-sê đáp: “Đừng bảo họ đi.”

17Nhưng họ cứ ép nài, đến độ ông khó xử, phải nói: “Thì bảo họ đi đi!” Năm mươi người đi tìm suốt ba ngày nhưng chẳng thấy Ê-li đâu cả.

18Họ trở về khi Ê-li-sê vẫn còn ở Giê-ri-cô. Ông nói: “Tôi đã bảo đừng đi mà!”

Những Phép Lạ Đầu Tiên của Ê-li-sê

19Bây giờ dân thành Giê-ri-cô đến trình bày với Ê-li-sê: “Như thầy thấy đó, thành này ở vào một vị trí rất tốt. Chỉ tiếc vì nước độc, đất không sinh sản hoa màu.”

20Ông bảo: “Đem cho tôi một cái bát mới đựng đầy muối.” Người ta vâng lời.

21Ông đi ra suối nước, đổ muối xuống suối và nói: “Chúa Hằng Hữu phán: ‘Ta cho nước này hóa lành, từ nay nước sẽ không gây chết chóc nhưng sẽ làm cho đất sinh sản hoa màu.’”

22Và từ đó đến nay, nước hóa lành như lời Ê-li-sê đã nói.

23Rời Giê-ri-cô, Ê-li-sê đi Bê-tên. Dọc đường có bọn trẻ con trong thành kéo ra chế giễu ông: “Lên đi, lão sói đầu ơi! Lên đi, lão sói đầu ơi!”

24Ông quay lại nhìn, rồi nhân danh Chúa Hằng Hữu nguyền rủa chúng nó. Có hai con gấu cái trong rừng ra, xé xác bốn mươi hai đứa trong bọn ấy.

25Ông tiếp tục đi đến Núi Cát-mên, rồi quay lại Sa-ma-ri.

1And it came to pass, when the Lord would take up Elias into heaven by a whirlwind, that Elias and Eliseus were going from Galgal.

2And Elias said to Eliseus: Stay thou here, because the Lord hath sent me as far as Bethel. And Eliseus said to him: As the Lord liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee. And when they were come down to Bethel,

3The sons of the prophets, that were at Bethel, came forth to Eliseus, and said to him: Dost thou know that this day the Lord will take away thy master from thee? And he answered: I also know it: hold your peace.

4And Elias said to Eliseus: Stay here because the Lord hath sent me to Jericho. And he said: As the Lord liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee. And when they were come to Jericho,

5The sons of the prophets that were at Jericho, came to Eliseus, and said to him: Dost thou know that this day the Lord will take away thy master from thee? And he said: I also know it: hold your peace.

6And Elias said to him: Stay here, because the Lord hath sent me as far as the Jordan. And he said: As the Lord liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee; and they two went on together,

7And fifty men of the sons of the prophets followed them, and stood in sight at a distance: but they two stood by the Jordan.

8And Elias took his mantle and folded it together, and struck the waters, and they were divided hither and thither, and they both passed over on dry ground.

9And when they were gone over, Elias said to Eliseus: Ask what thou wilt have me to do for thee, before I be taken away from thee. And Eliseus said: I beseech thee that in me may be thy double spirit.

10And he answered: Thou hast asked a hard thing: nevertheless if thou see me when I am taken from thee, thou shalt have what thou hast asked: but if thou see me not, thou shalt not have it.

11And as they went on, walking and talking together, behold a fiery chariot, and fiery horses parted them both asunder: and Elias went up by a whirlwind into heaven.

12And Eliseus saw him, and cried: My father, my father, the chariot of Israel, and the driver thereof. And he saw him no more: and he took hold of his own garments, and rent them in two pieces.

13And he took up the mantle of Elias, that fell from him: and going back, he stood upon the bank of the Jordan,

14And he struck the waters with the mantle of Elias, that had fallen from him, and they were not divided. And he said: Where is now the God of Elias? And he struck the waters, and they were divided, hither and thither, and Eliseus passed over.

15And the sons of the prophets at Jericho, who were over against him, seeing it said: The spirit of Elias hath rested upon Eliseus. And coming to meet him, they worshipped him, falling to the ground,

16And they said to him: Behold, there are with thy servants fifty strong men, that can go, and seek thy master, lest perhaps the spirit of the Lord hath taken him up and cast him upon some mountain or into some valley. And he said: Do not send.

17But they pressed him, till he consented, and said: Send. And they sent fifty men: and they sought three days but found him not.

18And they came back to him: for he abode at Jericho, and he said to them: Did I not say to you: Do not send?

19And the men of the city said to Eliseus: Behold the situation of this city is very good, as thou, my lord, seest: but the waters are very bad, and the ground barren.

20And he said: Bring me a new vessel, and put salt into it. And when they had brought it,

21He went out to the spring of the waters, and cast the salt into it, and said: Thus saith the Lord: I have healed these waters, and there shall be no more in them death or barrenness.

22And the waters were healed unto this day, according to the word of Eliseus, which he spoke.

23And he went up from thence to Bethel: and as he was going up by the way, little boys came out of the city and mocked him, saying: Go up, thou bald head; go up, thou bald head.

24And looking back, he saw them, and cursed them in the name of the Lord: and there came forth two bears out of the forest, and tore of them two and forty boys.

25And from thence he went to mount Carmel, and from thence he returned to Samaria.
