Daniel

1In the second year of the reign of Nabuchodonosor, Nabuchodonosor had a dream, and his spirit was terrified, and his dream went out of his mind.

2Then the king commanded to call together the diviners and the wise men, and the magicians, and the Chaldeans: to declare to the king his dreams: so they came and stood before the king.

3And the king said to them: I saw a dream: and being troubled in mind I know not what I saw.

4And the Chaldeans answered the king in Syriac: O king, live for ever: tell to thy servants thy dream, and we will declare the interpretation thereof.

5And the king answering said to the Chaldeans: The thing is gone out of my mind: unless you tell me the dream, and the meaning thereof, you shall be put to death, and your houses shall be confiscated.

6But if you tell the dream, and the meaning of it, you shall receive of me rewards, and gifts, and great honour: therefore tell me the dream, and the interpretation thereof.

7They answered again and said: Let the king tell his servants the dream, and we will declare the interpretation of it.

8The king answered, and said: I know for certain that you seek to gain time, since you know that the thing is gone from me.

9If therefore you tell me not the dream, there is one sentence concerning you, that you have also framed a lying interpretation, and full of deceit, to speak before me till the time pass away. Tell me therefore the dream, that I may know that you also give a true interpretation thereof.

10Then the Chaldeains answered before the king, and said: There is no man upon earth, that can accomplish thy word, O king, neither doth any king, though great and mighty, ask such a thing of any diviner, or wise man, or Chaldean.

11For the thing that thou askest, O king, is difficult; nor can any one be found that can shew it before the king, except the gods, whose conversation is not with men.

12Upon hearing this, the king in fury, and in great wrath, commanded that all the wise men of Babylon should be put to death.

13And the decree being gone forth, the wise men were slain: and Daniel and his companions were sought for, to be put to death.

14Then Daniel inquired concerning the law and the sentence, of Arioch the general of the king’s army, who was gone forth to kill the wise men of Babylon.

15And he asked him that had received the orders of the king, why so cruel a sentence was gone forth from the face of the king. And when Arioch had told the matter to Daniel,

16Daniel went in and desired of the king, that he would give him time to resolve the question and declare it to the king.

17And he went into his house, and told the matter to Ananias, and Misael, and Azarias his companions:

18To the end that they should ask mercy at the face of the God of heaven concerning this secret, and that Daniel and his companions might not perish with the rest of the wise men of Babylon.

19Then was the mystery revealed to Daniel by a vision in the night: and Daniel blessed the God of heaven,

20And speaking he said: Blessed be the name of the Lord from eternity and for evermore: for wisdom and fortitude are his.

21And he changeth times and ages: taketh away kingdoms and establisheth them, giveth wisdom to the wise, and knowledge to them that have understanding.

22He revealeth deep and hidden things, and knoweth what is in darkness: and light is with him.

23To thee, O God of our fathers, I give thanks, and I praise thee: because thou hast given me wisdom and strength: and now thou hast shewn me what we desired of thee, for thou hast made known to us, the king’s discourse.

24After this Daniel went in to Arioch, to whom the king had given orders to destroy the wise men of Babylon, and he spoke thus to him: Destroy not the wise men of Babylon: bring me in before the king, and I will tell the solution to the king.

25Then Arioch in haste brought in Daniel to the king, and said to him: I have found a man of the children of the captivity of Juda, that will resolve the question to the king.

26The king answered, and said to Daniel, whose name was Baltassar: Thinkest thou indeed that thou canst tell me the dream that I saw, and the interpretation thereof?

27And Daniel made answer before the king, and said: The secret that the king desireth to know, none of the wise men, or the philosophers, or the diviners, or the soothsayers can declare to the king.

28But there is a God in heaven that revealeth mysteries, who hath shewn to thee, O king Nabuchodonosor, what is to come to pass in the latter times. Thy dream, and the visions of thy head upon thy bed, are these:

29Thou, O king, didst begin to think in thy bed, what should come to pass hereafter: and he that revealeth mysteries shewed thee what shall come to pass.

30To me also this secret is revealed, not by any wisdom that I have more than all men alive: but that the interpretation might be made manifest to the king, and thou mightest know the thoughts of thy mind.

31Thou, O king, sawest, and behold there was as it were a great statue: this statue, which was great and high, tall of stature, stood before thee, and the look thereof was terrible.

32The head of this statue was of fine gold, but the breast and the arms of silver, and the belly and the thighs of brass:

33And the legs of iron, the feet part of iron and part of clay.

34Thus thou sawest, till a stone was cut out of a mountain without hands: and it struck the statue upon the feet thereof that were of iron and of clay, and broke them in pieces.

35Then was the iron, the clay, the brass, the silver, and the gold broken to pieces together, and became like the chaff of a summer’s thrashingfloor, and they were carried away by the wind: and there was no place found for them: but the stone that struck the statue, became a great mountain, and filled the whole earth.

36This is the dream: we will also tell the interpretation thereof before thee, O king.

37Thou art a king of kings: and the God of heaven hath given thee a kingdom, and strength, and power, and glory:

38And all places wherein the children of men, and the beasts of the field do dwell: he hath also given the birds of the air into thy hand, and hath put all things under thy power: thou therefore art the head of gold.

39And after thee shall rise up another kingdom, inferior to thee, of silver: and another third kingdom of brass, which shall rule over all the world.

40And the fourth kingdom shall be as iron. As iron breaketh into pieces, and subdueth all things, so shall that break and destroy all these.

41Arid whereas thou sawest the feet, and the toes, part of potter’s clay, and part of iron: the kingdom shall be divided, but yet it shall take its origin from the iron, according as thou sawest the iron mixed with the miry clay.

42And as the toes of the feet were part of iron, and part of clay, the kingdom shall be partly strong, and partly broken.

43And whereas thou sawest the iron mixed with miry clay, they shall be mingled indeed together with the seed of man, but they shall not stick fast one to another, as iron cannot be mixed with clay.

44But in the days of those kingdoms the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that shall never be destroyed, and his kingdom shall not be delivered up to another people, and it shall break in pieces, and shall consume all these kingdoms, and itself shall stand for ever.

45According as thou sawest that the stone was cut out of the mountain without hands, and broke in pieces, the clay, and the iron, and the brass, and the silver, and the gold, the great God hath shewn the king what shall come to pass hereafter, and the dream is true, and the interpretation thereof is faithful.

46Then king Nabuchodonosor fell on his face, and worshipped Daniel, and commanded that they should offer in sacrifice to him victims and incense.

47And the king spoke to Daniel, and said: Verily your God is the God of gods, and Lord of kings, and a revealer of hidden things: seeing thou couldst discover this secret.

48Then the king advanced Daniel to a high station, and gave him many and great gifts: and he made him governor over all the provinces of Babylon, and chief of the magistrates over all the wise men of Babylon.

49And Daniel requested of the king, and he appointed Sidrach, Misach, and Abdenago over the works of the province of Babylon: but Daniel himself was in the king’s palace.

1Năm thứ hai triều vua Na-bu-cô-đô-nô-xo, vua đã thấy chiêm bao khiến vua bối rối trong tâm hồn, không sao ngủ được.

2Vua cho vời tất cả những thầy phù thuỷ, pháp sư, đồng bóng và chiêm tinh đến nói cho vua biết vua đã thấy gì trong giấc chiêm bao. Họ vào chầu vua.

3Vua nói với họ : “Ta đã thấy chiêm bao, và tâm hồn ta bối rối vì muốn biết mình đã thấy gì trong giấc chiêm bao.”

4Và những nhà chiêm tinh ấy tâu vua bằng tiếng A-ram : “Thánh thượng vạn tuế. Xin thánh thượng kể cho các tôi tớ ngài giấc chiêm bao và bầy tôi sẽ giải nghĩa.”

5Nhà vua trả lời họ rằng : “Các ngươi phải hiểu rõ lệnh ta. Nếu các ngươi không nói được cho ta biết ta đã thấy gì trong giấc chiêm bao và không giải nghĩa được cho ta, thì các ngươi sẽ bị xử lăng trì và nhà các ngươi sẽ trở thành đống bùn.

6Còn nếu các ngươi cho ta biết ta đã thấy gì trong giấc chiêm bao và giải nghĩa được cho ta, thì các ngươi sẽ được ta ban quà, ban tặng vật và chức trọng quyền cao. Vậy các ngươi hãy nói cho ta biết ta đã thấy gì trong giấc chiêm bao và ý nghĩa của nó là thế nào.”

7Họ lại đáp rằng : “Xin đức vua kể giấc chiêm bao cho các tôi tớ nghe, rồi chúng thần sẽ trình bày ý nghĩa giấc chiêm bao.”

8Nhà vua đáp lại rằng : “Ta biết chắc chắn các ngươi đang tìm cách kéo dài thời gian vì biết lệnh ta đã ra là

9nếu các ngươi không cho ta biết được giấc chiêm bao thì tất cả các ngươi sẽ chịu chung một án lệnh, nên các ngươi đã đem lời dối trá quanh co mà tâu trước mặt ta cho qua thời giờ. Vậy các ngươi hãy nói cho ta nghe giấc chiêm bao và như thế ta sẽ biết các ngươi có thể giải nghĩa cho ta được.”

10Những nhà chiêm tinh đáp lời vua và tâu rằng : “Không có người nào trên mặt đất này có thể tỏ bày chuyện của nhà vua, bởi vì không có vị vua nào, dù cao cả quyền uy mấy đi nữa, lại đem một chuyện như thế ra hỏi nhà phù thuỷ, pháp sư và nhà chiêm tinh.

11Chuyện vua hỏi đó là chuyện khó khăn và không ai có thể trình bày trước mặt vua ngoài các bậc thần linh, mà các bậc ấy thì không ở chung với người phàm.”

12Nghe thế, nhà vua nổi cơn lôi đình và truyền tiêu diệt tất cả các người thông thái ở Ba-by-lon.

13Thế là lệnh được ban ra truyền giết các nhà thông thái. Và người ta tìm Đa-ni-en với các bạn để đem đi giết.

14Bấy giờ ông Đa-ni-en đem lời khôn khéo nói với quan A-ri-ốc là người chỉ huy đám thị vệ đang trên đường đi giết các nhà thông thái của Ba-by-lon.

15Ông Đa-ni-en thưa với viên sĩ quan của nhà vua là A-ri-ốc rằng : “Tại sao vua lại ra lệnh vội vã thế ?” Bấy giờ quan A-ri-ốc nói cho ông Đa-ni-en biết sự việc.

16Ông Đa-ni-en liền vào xin vua cho triển hạn để ông tìm ra lời giải thích cho vua.

17Rồi ông Đa-ni-en về nhà kể cho các bạn là Kha-na-ni-a, Mi-sa-ên và A-da-ri-a biết sự việc,

18và bảo họ kêu xin Đức Chúa Trời rủ lòng thương cho biết điều bí nhiệm này, để Đa-ni-en và các bạn khỏi bị tiêu diệt cùng với các nhà thông thái của Ba-by-lon.

19Bấy giờ ông Đa-ni-en được mặc khải điều bí nhiệm ấy trong giấc chiêm bao ban đêm. Ông Đa-ni-en liền chúc tụng Đức Chúa Trời

20và quyền năng.

21cho người hiểu rộng biết nhiều.

22và ánh sáng ở với Người.

23chuyện của nhà vua.”

24Thế rồi ông Đa-ni-en vào gặp quan A-ri-ốc là người đã nhận lệnh vua để tiêu diệt các nhà thông thái của Ba-by-lon. Ông Đa-ni-en đến và nói với ông ta thế này : “Đừng tiêu diệt các nhà thông thái của Ba-by-lon. Hãy đưa tôi vào bệ kiến nhà vua và tôi sẽ trình bày cho vua lời giải thích.”

25Bấy giờ quan A-ri-ốc vội vã đưa ông Đa-ni-en vào chầu vua và tâu vua thế này : “Trong số con cái Giu-đa bị lưu đày, thần đã tìm thấy một người để trình bày cho bệ hạ lời giải mộng.”

26Đáp lời ông Đa-ni-en, cũng gọi là Bên-tơ-sát-xa, nhà vua nói : “Liệu ngươi có thể cho ta biết giấc chiêm bao ta đã thấy và ý nghĩa giấc chiêm bao ấy không ?”

27Ông Đa-ni-en trả lời : “Điều bí nhiệm mà đức vua hỏi thì các nhà thông thái, các pháp sư, các thầy phù thuỷ và các thầy bói không thể nào trình bày cho đức vua được.

28Nhưng có Đức Chúa Trời là Đấng mặc khải những điều bí nhiệm, chính Người cho đức vua Na-bu-cô-đô-nô-xo biết điều gì sẽ xảy ra sau này. Đang khi nằm trên giường, ngài đã chiêm bao và thấy trong đầu như thế này :

29Tâu đức vua, khi nằm trên giường, ngài đã để trí suy nghĩ về những gì sẽ xảy ra sau này ; và Đấng mặc khải các điều bí nhiệm đã cho ngài biết điều gì sẽ xảy ra.

30Còn thần đây, dù chẳng thông thái hơn ai, nhưng điều bí nhiệm này đã được mặc khải cho thần, để thần trình bày cho đức vua lời giải nghĩa, ngõ hầu đức vua biết những ý nghĩ trong lòng đức vua.

31Tâu bệ hạ, ngài đã có một giấc chiêm bao. Giấc chiêm bao ấy như thế này : một pho tượng, một pho tượng lớn, sáng chói, đứng sừng sững trước mặt ngài, coi thật dễ sợ.

32Đầu pho tượng ấy bằng vàng ròng, ngực và hai cánh tay bằng bạc, bụng và hai bắp đùi bằng đồng,

33hai bắp chân bằng sắt, hai bàn chân nửa sắt nửa sành.

34Ngài đang mải nhìn thì bỗng có một tảng đá tách ra, dù không có bàn tay nào đụng tới, nó đập vào pho tượng trúng hai chân nửa sắt nửa sành, khiến hai bàn chân vỡ tan ra.

35Bấy giờ tất cả cùng vỡ tan : cả sắt, sành, đồng, bạc lẫn vàng, giống như rơm rác trên sân phơi lúa mùa hè bị gió cuốn đi không để lại dấu vết gì. Còn tảng đá làm vỡ pho tượng thì trở thành một hòn núi lớn choán hết mặt đất.

36Đó là giấc chiêm bao, còn ý nghĩa của nó thì xin tâu trước bệ hạ.

37Tâu bệ hạ, ngài là vua các vua, Đức Chúa Trời đã ban cho ngài vương quốc, quyền hành, thế lực và vinh quang.

38Con cái loài người, thú vật ngoài đồng, chim chóc trên trời, dù chúng ở đâu thì Đức Chúa Trời cũng giao vào tay ngài và đặt ngài làm chủ tể mọi loài. Cái đầu bằng vàng chính là ngài vậy.

39Sau triều đại ngài, sẽ xuất hiện một vương quốc khác kém hơn ngài. Rồi một vương quốc thứ ba nữa, vương quốc bằng đồng, sẽ thống trị cả mặt đất.

40Còn vương quốc thứ tư vững như sắt. Cũng như sắt nghiền nát và đập tan tất cả vương quốc đó –khác nào sắt phá vỡ– cũng sẽ nghiền nát và phá vỡ tất cả.

41Bàn chân và các ngón chân mà ngài thấy nửa bằng đất sét, nửa bằng sắt là một vương quốc sẽ bị phân chia, nhưng sẽ có một phần sức mạnh của sắt, vì ngài thấy sắt pha lẫn với đất sét.

42Các ngón chân phần bằng sắt, phần bằng đất sét là một vương quốc nửa mạnh nửa yếu.

43Việc ngài thấy sắt pha với đất sét nghĩa là các vương quốc sẽ làm cho các chủng tộc pha lẫn với nhau, nhưng không gắn bó với nhau được, cũng như sắt không hoà lẫn được với đất sét.

44Trong thời đại các vua này, Đức Chúa Trời sẽ lập một vương quốc không bao giờ bị tiêu diệt, vương quốc ấy không bị giao cho một dân khác, nhưng nó sẽ đập tan và tiêu diệt tất cả mọi vương quốc này, đến muôn đời nó sẽ đứng vững ;

45cũng như ngài đã thấy tảng đá bị tách khỏi núi dù không có bàn tay nào đụng tới, tảng đá ấy đập tan cả sắt, đồng, đất sét, bạc và vàng. Thiên Chúa cao cả đã cho đức vua biết chuyện gì sẽ xảy ra sau này. Giấc chiêm bao đúng là như thế và ý nghĩa chắc chắn là như vậy.”

46Bấy giờ vua Na-bu-cô-đô-nô-xo sấp mình phủ phục trước mặt ông Đa-ni-en rồi truyền dâng lễ phẩm và hương thơm cho ông.

47Đáp lời ông Đa-ni-en vua nói : “Thiên Chúa của ngươi quả là Thần các thần, là Chúa Tể các vua, và là Đấng mặc khải những điều bí ẩn ; nhờ thế ngươi mới có thể tỏ lộ điều bí ẩn này.”

48Vua liền đặt ông Đa-ni-en lên chức cao và ban cho ông nhiều món quà lớn. Vua đặt ông làm người cai quản toàn tỉnh Ba-by-lon và làm người đứng đầu các nhà thông thái của Ba-by-lon.

49Ông Đa-ni-en xin nhà vua đặt các ông Sát-rác, Mê-sác và A-vết Nơ-gô lên trông coi tỉnh Ba-by-lon. Còn ông Đa-ni-en thì túc trực trong đền vua.
