1 Samuel

1And Saul spoke to Jonathan his son and to all his servants, that they should kill David. But Jonathan the son of Saul loved David exceedingly.

2And Jonathan told David, saying: Saul my father seeketh to kill thee: wherefore look to thyself, I beseech thee, in the morning, and thou shalt abide in a secret place and shalt be hid.

3And I will go out and stand beside my father in the field where thou art: and I will speak of thee to my father, and whatsoever I shall see, I will tell thee.

4And Jonathan spoke good things of David to Saul his father: and said to him: Sin not, O king, against thy servant, David, because he hath not sinned against thee, and his works are very good towards thee.

5And he put his life in his hand, and slew the Philistine, and the Lord wrought great salvation for all Israel. Thou sawest it and didst rejoice. Why therefore wilt thou sin against innocent blood by killing David, who is without fault?

6And when Saul heard this he was appeased with the words of Jonathan, and swore: As the Lord liveth he shall not be slain.

7Then Jonathan called David and told him all these words: and Jonathan brought in David to Saul, and he was before him, as he had been yesterday and the day before.

8And the war began again, and David went out and fought against the Philistines, and defeated them with a great slaughter, and they fled from his face.

9And the evil spirit from the Lord came upon Saul, and he sat in his house, and held a spear in his hand: and David played with his hand.

10And Saul endeavoured to nail David to the wall with his spear. And David slipt away out of the presence of Saul: and the spear missed him, and was fastened in the wall, and David fled and escaped that night.

11Saul therefore sent his guards to David’s house to watch him, that he might be killed in the morning. And when Michol David’s wife had told him this, saying: Unless thou save thyself this night, tomorrow thou wilt die,

12She let him down through a window. And he went and fled away and escaped.

13And Michol took an image and laid it on the bed, and put a goat’s skin with the hair at the head of it, and covered it with clothes.

14And Saul sent officers to seize David: and it was answered that he was sick.

15And again Saul sent to see David, saying: Bring him to me in the bed, that he may be slain.

16And when the messengers were come in, they found an image upon the bed, and a goat’s skin at its head.

17And Saul said to Michol: Why hast thou deceived me so, and let my enemy go and flee away? And Michol answered Saul: Because he said to me: Let me go, or else I will kill thee.

18But David fled and escaped, and came to Samuel in Ramatha, and told him all that Saul had done to him: and he and Samuel went and dwelt in Najoth.

19And it was told Saul by some, saying: Behold David is in Najoth in Ramatha.

20So Saul sent officers to take David: and when they saw a company of prophets prophesying, and Samuel presiding over them, the spirit of the Lord came also upon them, and they likewise began to prophesy.

21And when this was told Saul, he sent other messengers: but they also prophesied. And again Saul sent messengers the third time: and they prophesied also. And Saul being exceedingly angry,

22Went also himself to Ramatha, and came as far as the great cistern, which is in Socho, and he asked, and said: In what place are Samuel and David? And it was told him: Behold they axe in Najoth in Ramatha.

23And he went to Najoth in Ramatha, and the spirit of the Lord came upon him also, and he went on, and prophesied till he came to Najoth in Ramatha.

24And he stripped himself also of his garments, and prophesied with the rest before Samuel, and lay down naked all that day and night. This gave occasion to a proverb: What! is Saul too among the prophets?

1Sau-lơ bàn tính cùng Giô-na-than, con trai mình, và các tôi tớ, để giết Đa-vít; nhưng Giô-na-than, con trai của Sau-lơ, rất thương yêu Đa-vít,

2cho người hay, và nói rằng: Sau-lơ, cha tôi, tìm giết anh. Vậy, sáng ngày mai, hãy cẩn thận, ở nơi khuất kín, và ẩn mình đi.

3Tôi sẽ đi ra đứng gần bên cha tôi nơi ruộng mà anh sẽ ẩn, và nói về anh cùng cha tôi, thử xem người nói thế nào, rồi sẽ cho anh biết.

4Vậy, Giô-na-than nói binh Đa-vít cùng Sau-lơ, cha mình, mà rằng: Xin vua chớ phạm tội cùng Đa-vít, tôi tớ vua, vì người không có phạm tội cùng vua, mà lại có giúp công việc lớn lao cho vua nữa.

5Người đã liều mạng mình mà giết người Phi-li-tin kia, nên Đức Giê-hô-va vì cớ người có làm sự giải cứu lớn cho cả Y-sơ-ra-ên. Vua có thấy và mừng rỡ điều đó; nhân sao lại toan phạm tội cùng huyết vô tội, mà giết Đa-vít vô lý?

6Sau-lơ lắng tai nghe lời Giô-na-than nói, bèn thề rằng: Ta chỉ Đức Giê-hô-va hằng sống mà thề, Đa-vít sẽ chẳng chết!

7Bấy giờ, Giô-na-than gọi Đa-vít, thuật các lời ấy cho người, đoạn dẫn Đa-vít đến gần Sau-lơ, và Đa-vít hầu việc Sau-lơ như trước.

8Sự tranh chiến cứ liên tiếp luôn luôn, Đa-vít đi ra đánh dân Phi-li-tin, làm cho chúng nó bị thua chạy trốn.

9Nhưng ác thần bởi Đức Giê-hô-va khiến nhập vào Sau-lơ lúc người ngồi trong điện, cầm cây giáo nơi tay; còn Đa-vít gảy đàn.

10Sau-lơ muốn lấy giáo đâm Đa-vít dính vào vách, nhưng Đa-vít tránh khỏi, giáo của Sau-lơ găm trong vách. Đa-vít trốn và được thoát khỏi buổi tối đó.

11Sau-lơ sai người đi đến nhà Đa-vít đặng canh giữ người, để sáng ngày giết người đi. Song Mi-canh, vợ Đa-vít, cho người hay và nói rằng: Nếu đêm nay chàng không trốn khỏi, thì sáng mai chàng sẽ bị giết.

12Mi-canh thòng Đa-vít xuống nơi cửa sổ; người trốn và thoát khỏi.

13Kế ấy, Mi-canh lấy tượng thê-ra-phim mà để lên giường, dùng tấm nệm bằng lông dê bọc đầu nó, rồi bao phủ cái mình nó bằng một cái áo tơi.

14Khi Sau-lơ sai người đến bắt Đa-vít, thì nàng nói rằng: Chàng đau.

15Sau-lơ lại sai người đến thăm Đa-vít, mà truyền chúng rằng: Hãy đem hắn ở trên giường đến cùng ta, hầu cho ta giết hắn đi.

16Vậy, những kẻ sai đi đến đó, thấy tượng thê-ra-phim ở trên giường, có một tấm nệm bằng lông dê ở nơi đầu nó.

17Sau-lơ nói với Mi-canh rằng: Sao ngươi gạt ta như vậy, làm cho kẻ thù nghịch ta trốn khỏi đi? Mi-canh thưa cùng Sau-lơ rằng: Người có bảo tôi: Hãy để cho ta đi, bằng không, ta sẽ giết mầy.

18Vậy, Đa-vít trốn và thoát khỏi, đi đến nhà Sa-mu-ên tại Ra-ma, rồi thuật cho người mọi điều Sau-lơ đã làm cho mình. Đoạn, người và Sa-mu-ên đi, ở tại Na-giốt.

19Có người thuật lại điều đó cho Sau-lơ, mà rằng: Kìa, Đa-vít ở tại Na-giốt trong Ra-ma.

20Sau-lơ sai người đi bắt Đa-vít; nhưng khi chúng thấy một đám tiên tri đang nói tiên tri, và Sa-mu-ên đứng đầu những người ấy, thì Thần của Đức Chúa Trời cảm động họ, họ cũng khởi nói tiên tri.

21Người ta cho Sau-lơ hay, người bèn sai những người khác; họ cũng nói tiên tri như các kẻ khác. Sau-lơ lại sai người đi lần thứ ba, đến phiên họ cũng nói tiên tri.

22Bấy giờ, Sau-lơ thân hành đến Ra-ma; tới nơi giếng nước lớn của Sê-cu, người hỏi rằng: Sa-mu-ên và Đa-vít ở đâu? Người ta thưa rằng: Hai người ở Na-giốt trong Ra-ma.

23Vậy, người đi đến Na-giốt trong Ra-ma; Thần của Đức Chúa Trời cảm động đến phiên người, người cứ đi dọc đường nói tiên tri cho đến khi tới Na-giốt trong Ra-ma.

24Người cũng lột áo mình, nói tiên tri trước mặt Sa-mu-ên, rồi ở trần như vậy nằm dưới đất trọn ngày và đêm đó. Bởi cớ ấy, có câu tục ngữ rằng: Sau-lơ há cũng vào hàng các tiên tri sao?
