The Words of Agur

1These are the words of Agur son of Jakeh—the burden that this man declared to Ithiel: “I am weary, O God,and worn out.

2Surely I am the most ignorant of men,and I lack the understanding of a man.

3I have not learned wisdom,and I have no knowledge of the Holy One.

4Who has ascended to heaven and come down?Who has gathered the wind in His hands?Who has bound up the waters in His cloak?Who has established all the ends of the earth?What is His name, and what is the name of His Son—surely you know!

5Every word of God is flawless;He is a shield to those who take refuge in Him.

6Do not add to His words,lest He rebuke you and prove you a liar.

7Two things I ask of You—do not refuse me before I die:

8Keep falsehood and deceitful words far from me.Give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with the bread that is my portion.

9Otherwise, I may have too muchand deny You, saying, ‘Who is the LORD?’Or I may become poor and steal,profaning the name of my God.

10Do not slander a servant to his master,or he will curse you, and you will bear the guilt.

11There is a generation of those who curse their fathersand do not bless their mothers.

12There is a generation of those who are pure in their own eyesand yet unwashed of their filth.

13There is a generation—how haughty are their eyesand pretentious are their glances—

14there is a generation whose teeth are swordsand whose jaws are knives,devouring the oppressed from the earthand the needy from among men.

15The leech has two daughters:Give and Give. There are three things that are never satisfied, four that never say, ‘Enough!’:

16Sheol, the barren womb, land never satisfied with water, and fire that never says, ‘Enough!’

17As for the eye that mocks a fatherand scorns obedience to a mother,may the ravens of the valley pluck it outand young vultures devour it.

18There are three things too wonderful for me, four that I cannot understand:

19the way of an eagle in the sky, the way of a snake on a rock, the way of a ship at sea, and the way of a man with a maiden.

20This is the way of an adulteress:She eats and wipes her mouth and says, ‘I have done nothing wrong.’

21Under three things the earth trembles, under four it cannot bear up:

22a servant who becomes king, a fool who is filled with food,

23an unloved woman who marries, and a maidservant who supplants her mistress.

24Four things on earth are small, yet they are exceedingly wise:

25The ants are creatures of little strength, yet they store up their food in the summer;

26the rock badgersare creatures of little power, yet they make their homes in the rocks;

27the locusts have no king, yet they all advance in formation;

28and the lizard can be caught in one’s hands, yet it is found in the palaces of kings.

29There are three things that are stately in their stride, and four that are impressive in their walk:

30a lion, mighty among beasts, refusing to retreat before anything;

31a strutting rooster; a he-goat; and a king with his army around him.

32If you have foolishly exalted yourselfor if you have plotted evil, put your hand over your mouth.

33For as the churning of milk yields butter,and the twisting of the nose draws blood, so the stirring of anger brings forth strife.”

1Lời của A-gu-ra, con trai Gia-kê, nói với Y-thi-ên và U-can:

2Tôi là người ngu dốt nhất,và cũng không hiểu biết như người thường.

3Tôi chưa được học sự khôn ngoan,cũng không có sự hiểu biết về Đấng Thánh.

4Ai đã lên trời, rồi xuống đất?Ai đã góp gió trong tay, bọc biển trong áo, tạo nên vũ trụ? Đấng ấy là Ai? Và Con Trai Ngài tên gì? Xin nói giúp tôi, nếu ngươi biết!

5Mọi lời của Đức Chúa Trời đều tinh luyện;Ngài là tấm khiên bảo vệ người nương cậy Ngài.

6Đừng thêm gì vào lời của Ngài, kẻo Ngài bắt tội,vì người thêm thắt là người nói dối.

7Đức Chúa Trời ôi, trước khi con chết,xin cho con hai điều:

8Giúp con khỏi dối trá, giả hình.Đừng để con nghèo khổ, cũng đừng cho con giàu có. Xin cho con lương thực vừa đủ cần dùng.

9Nếu giàu có dư dật, con sẽ khước từ Chúa và hỏi: “Chúa Hằng Hữu là ai?”Nếu nghèo khổ, con sẽ trộm cắp, làm ô nhơ Danh Đức Chúa Trời.

10Chớ vu khống người đầy tớ với chủ,người sẽ nguyền rủa con vì lỗi con tạo lấy.

11Có người rủa cha,và không chúc phước cho mẹ.

12Có người tự thấy mình trong trắng,nhưng chưa được rửa sạch ô uế.

13Có người đôi mắt kiêu căng,với cái nhìn khinh người.

14Có người răng sắc như gươm,hàm răng như dao cạo.Họ nhai ngấu nghiến người nghèo,ăn nuốt người thiếu thốn.

15Con đỉa có hai miệng hút,chúng kêu gào “Hãy cho, Hãy cho!”Có ba vật chẳng hề thỏa mãn,và bốn loài không biết nói “Đủ rồi!”

16Âm phủ,lòng dạ son sẻ, đất không bao giờ đủ nước, và ngọn lửa hừng.

17Mắt của người chế nhạo cha, khinh bỉ mẹ,sẽ bị quạ móc đi và phụng hoàng nuốt sống.

18Có ba điều quá lạ lùng—không, bốn việc dị kỳ tôi không hiểu thấu:

19Đường đại bàng bay trên không,lối rắn bò trên đá,đường tàu chạy trên biển,và đường tình ái giữa nam nữ.

20Còn thêm một điều nữa: Người đàn bà ngoại tình,phạm tội xong, chùi miệng nói: “Tôi có làm gì đâu.”

21Có ba điều làm đất rung chuyển—không, bốn việc khiến đất không chịu nổi:

22Người nô lệ làm vua,người ngu xuẩn no đầy, thịnh vượng,

23người đàn bà ghen ghét lấy được chồng,đứa tớ gái lên làm bà chủ.

24Có bốn loài vật tuy nhỏ bénhưng lại khôn ngoan lạ đời:

25Con kiến là loài yếu ớt,dự trữ thực phẩm suốt mùa hạ.

26Con chồn ít năng lực,nhưng lại biết ẩn mình trong hốc đá.

27Con châu chấu tuy không có vua,nhưng chúng bay thành đội ngũ.

28Con thằn lằn mà người ta lấy tay bắt được,lại ở trong cung vua.

29Có ba dã thú dáng đi hùng dũng đẹp đẽ—không, bốn loài có nước bước oai phong lẫm liệt:

30Con sư tử, chúa sơn lâm, chẳng lùi bước trước loài nào cả,

31con công, con dê đực, và vị vua khi đi duyệt binh.

32Nếu con vì ngu dại mà tự kiêu hoặc mưu đồ việc ác,phải biết xấu hổ, lấy tay che miệng lại.

33Đánh sữa ra bơvà đấm mũi gây chảy máu, cũng vậy, chọc giận sinh cãi nhau.
