Jehoram Reigns in Judah

1And Jehoshaphat rested with his fathers and was buried with them in the City of David. And his son Jehoram reigned in his place.

2Jehoram’s brothers, the sons of Jehoshaphat, were Azariah, Jehiel, Zechariah, Azariah, Michael, and Shephatiah; these were all sons of Jehoshaphat king of Israel.

3Their father had given them many gifts of silver and gold and precious things, as well as the fortified cities in Judah; but he gave the kingdom to Jehoram because he was the firstborn.

4When Jehoram had established himself over his father’s kingdom, he strengthened himself by putting to the sword all his brothers along with some of the princes of Israel.

5Jehoram was thirty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem eight years.

6And Jehoram walked in the ways of the kings of Israel, just as the house of Ahab had done. For he married a daughter of Ahab and did evil in the sight of the LORD.

7Yet the LORD was unwilling to destroy the house of David, because of the covenant He had made with David, and since He had promised to maintain a lamp for David and his descendants forever.

Edom and Libnah Rebel

8In the days of Jehoram, Edom rebelled against the hand of Judah and appointed their own king.

9So Jehoram crossed into Edom with his officers and all his chariots. When the Edomites surrounded him and his chariot commanders, he rose up and attackedby night.

10So to this day Edom has been in rebellion against the hand of Judah. Likewise, Libnah rebelled against his hand at the same time, because Jehoram had forsaken the LORD, the God of his fathers.

11Jehoram had also built high places on the hills of Judah; he had caused the people of Jerusalem to prostitute themselves and had led Judah astray.

Elijah’s Letter to Jehoram

12Then a letter came to Jehoram from Elijah the prophet, which stated: “This is what the LORD, the God of your father David, says: ‘You have not walked in the ways of your father Jehoshaphat or of Asa king of Judah,

13but you have walked in the ways of the kings of Israel and have caused Judah and the people of Jerusalem to prostitute themselves, just as the house of Ahab prostituted itself. You have also killed your brothers, your father’s family, who were better than you.

14So behold, the LORD is about to strike your people, your sons, your wives, and all your possessions with a serious blow.

15And day after day you yourself will suffer from a severe illness, a disease of your bowels, until it causes your bowels to come out.’”

Jehoram’s Disease and Death

16Then the LORD stirred against Jehoram the spirit of the Philistines and Arabs who lived near the Cushites.

17So they went to war against Judah, invaded it, and carried off all the possessions found in the king’s palace, along with his sons and wives; not a son was left to him except Jehoahaz,his youngest.

18After all this, the LORD afflicted Jehoram with an incurable disease of the bowels.

19This continued day after day until two full years had passed. Finally, his intestines came out because of his disease, and he died in severe pain. And his people did not make a fire in his honor as they had done for his fathers.

20Jehoram was thirty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem eight years. He died, to no one’s regret, and was buried in the City of David, but not in the tombs of the kings.

1Giô-sa-phát an giấc cùng tổ phụ mình, được chôn trong thành Đa-vít với tổ phụ người; Giô-ram con trai người, cai trị thế cho người.

2Người có các em ruột, tức là những con trai Giô-sa-phát: A-xa-ria, Giê-hi-ên, Xa-cha-ri, A-xa-ria-u, Mi-ca-ên, và Sê-pha-ti-a; các người này đều là con trai của Giô-sa-phát, vua Y-sơ-ra-ên.

3Vua cha có ban cho chúng nhiều của cải bằng bạc và vàng, những bửu vật với các thành vững bền trong xứ Giu-đa; nhưng người ban ngôi nước cho Giô-ram, bởi vì người là con trưởng.

4Khi Giô-ram lên ngôi nước cha mình, làm cho mình mạnh mẽ, bèn lấy gươm giết các em mình và mấy người quan trưởng của Y-sơ-ra-ên.

5Giô-ram được ba mươi hai tuổi, khi lên ngôi làm vua, và người cai trị tám năm tại Giê-ru-sa-lem.

6Người đi trong con đường của các vua Y-sơ-ra-ên, theo điều nhà A-háp đã làm; vì người có cưới con gái A-háp làm vợ; người làm điều ác trước mặt Đức Giê-hô-va.

7Nhưng, vì Đức Giê-hô-va đã lập giao ước với Đa-vít, bởi Ngài đã hứa rằng sẽ ban một ngọn đèn cho người và cho con cháu người đến đời đời, nên Ngài không muốn diệt nhà Đa-vít.

8Trong đời Giô-ram, Ê-đôm phản nghịch cùng Giu-đa, và lập một vua cho mình.

9Giô-ram với các quan tướng và các xe của mình, ban đêm chổi dậy, kéo ra đánh Ê-đôm đã vây phủ mình và các quan cai xe.

10Song Ê-đôm dấy nghịch, không phục dưới tay Giu-đa cho đến ngày nay. Cũng trong một lúc ấy, Líp-na phản nghịch, không phục dưới tay Giô-ram nữa, bởi vì người đã lìa bỏ Giê-hô-va Đức Chúa Trời của tổ phụ người.

11Người cũng lập những nơi cao trong các núi Giu-đa, xui cho dân cư thành Giê-ru-sa-lem thông dâm, và khiến cho dân Giu-đa lầm lạc.

12Đấng tiên tri Ê-li gởi thơ cho Giô-ram, mà nói rằng: Giê-hô-va Đức Chúa Trời của Đa-vít, tổ phụ ông, đã phán như vầy: bởi ngươi không đi theo đường lối của Giô-sa-phát, cha ngươi, lại cũng chẳng đi theo con đường của A-sa, vua Giu-đa,

13nhưng đã đi theo đường lối của các vua Y-sơ-ra-ên, xui cho người Giu-đa và dân cư thành Giê-ru-sa-lem thông dâm y như nhà A-háp đã làm vậy, và cũng đã giết các em ngươi về nhà cha của ngươi, là những người tốt hơn ngươi,

14này Đức Giê-hô-va sẽ giáng họa lớn trên dân sự ngươi, trên con cái ngươi, trên các vợ ngươi, cùng trên các tài vật của ngươi;

15còn chính mình ngươi sẽ bị bịnh trong gan ruột càng ngày càng nặng cho đến đỗi gan ruột tan rớt ra.

16Vả lại, Đức Giê-hô-va khêu lòng dân Phi-li-tin và dân A rạp ở gần bên dân Ê-thi-ô-bi, nghịch với Giô-ram;

17chúng kéo lên hãm đánh Giu-đa, lấn vào trong cả xứ, đoạt lấy các tài vật thấy trong cung điện vua, và bắt các vương tử cùng hậu phi của người đi làm phu tù, đến nỗi trừ ra Giô-a-cha con trai út người, thì chẳng còn sót lại cho người một con trai nào hết.

18Sau các việc ấy, Đức Giê-hô-va hành hại người, khiến cho bị bịnh bất trị trong ruột.

19Ngày qua tháng lụn, xảy cuối năm thứ nhì, thì ruột gan Giô-ram vì bịnh tan rớt ra, và người chết cách đau đớn dữ tợn; dân sự không xông thuốc thơm cho người như đã xông cho tổ phụ người.

20Khi người lên ngôi, thì tuổi được ba mươi hai, và người cai trị tám năm tại Giê-ru-sa-lem; người qua đời chẳng ai tiếc người; người ta chôn người trong thành Đa-vít, song chẳng phải tại mồ các vua.
