Nehemiah

1And all the people are gathered as one man unto the broad place that [is] before the water-gate, and they say to Ezra the scribe to bring the book of the law of Moses, that Jehovah commanded Israel.

2And Ezra the priest bringeth the law before the assembly, both of men and women, and every one intelligent to hear, on the first day of the seventh month,

3and he readeth in it before the broad place that [is] before the water-gate, from the light till the middle of the day, over-against the men, and the women, and those intelligent, and the ears of all the people [are] unto the book of the law.

4And Ezra the scribe standeth on a tower of wood that they made for the purpose, and Mattithiah standeth near him, and Shema, and Anaiah, and Urijah, and Hilkiah, and Maaseiah, on his right; and on his left Pedaiah, and Mishael, and Malchijah, and Hashum, and Hashbaddana, Zechariah, Meshullam.

5And Ezra openeth the book before the eyes of all the people — for above all the people he hath been — and at his opening [it] all the people have stood up,

6and Ezra blesseth Jehovah, the great God, and all the people answer, 'Amen, Amen,' with lifting up of their hands, and they bow and do obeisance to Jehovah — faces to the earth.

7And Jeshua, and Bani, and Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodijah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, Pelaiah, and the Levites, giving the people understanding in the law, and the people, [are] on their station,

8and they read in the book, in the law of God, explaining — so as to give the meaning, and they give understanding to the convocation.

9And Nehemiah — he [is] the Tirshatha — saith (and Ezra the priest, the scribe, and the Levites who are instructing the people) to all the people, 'To-day is holy to Jehovah your God, do not mourn, nor weep:' for all the people are weeping at their hearing the words of the law.

10And he saith to them, 'Go, eat fat things, and drink sweet things, and sent portions to him for whom nothing is prepared, for to-day [is] holy to our Lord, and be not grieved, for the joy of Jehovah is your strength.'

11And the Levites are keeping all the people silent, saying, 'Be silent, for to-day [is] holy, and be not grieved.'

12And all the people go to eat, and to drink, and to send portions, and to make great joy, because they have understood concerning the words that they made known to them.

13And on the second day have been gathered heads of the fathers of all the people, the priests, and the Levites, unto Ezra the scribe, even to act wisely concerning the words of the law.

14And they find written in the law that Jehovah commanded by the hand of Moses, that the sons of Israel dwell in booths in the feast, in the seventh month,

15and that they proclaim and cause to pass over all their cities, (and in Jerusalem,) saying, 'Go ye out to the mount, and bring leaves of the olive, and leaves of the oil tree, and leaves of the myrtle, and leaves of the palms, and leaves of thick trees, to make booths as it is written.'

16And the people go out, and bring in, and make for themselves booths, each on his roof, and in their courts, and in the courts of the house of God, and in the broad place of the water-gate, and in the broad place of the gate of Ephraim.

17And they make — all the assembly of the captives of the captivity — booths, and they sit in booths; for the sons of Israel had not done, from the days of Jeshua son of Nun, so unto that day, and there is very great joy.

18And he readeth in the book of the law of God day by day, from the first day till the last day, and they make a feast seven days, and on the eighth day a restraint, according to the ordinance.

1Bấy giờ, muôn người như một, tụ họp ở quảng trường trước cửa Nước. Họ xin ông Ét-ra là kinh sư đem sách Luật Mô-sê ra. Đó là Luật ĐỨC CHÚA đã truyền cho Ít-ra-en.

2Hôm ấy là ngày mồng một tháng thứ bảy, ông Ét-ra cũng là tư tế đem Sách Luật ra trước mặt cộng đồng gồm đàn ông, đàn bà và tất cả các trẻ em đã tới tuổi khôn.

3Ông đứng ở quảng trường phía trước cửa Nước, đọc Sách Luật trước mặt đàn ông, đàn bà và tất cả các trẻ em đã tới tuổi khôn. Ông đọc từ sáng sớm tới trưa, và toàn dân lắng tai nghe sách Luật.

4Kinh sư Ét-ra đứng trên bục gỗ đã đóng sẵn để dùng vào việc này. Bên cạnh ông, phía tay mặt, có các ông : Mát-tít-gia, Se-ma, A-na-gia, U-ri-gia, Khin-ki-gia và Ma-a-xê-gia ; phía tay trái, có các ông : Pơ-đa-gia, Mi-sa-ên, Man-ki-gia, Kha-sum, Khát-bát-đa-na, Dơ-khác-gia và Mơ-su-lam.

5Ông Ét-ra mở sách ra trước mặt toàn dân, vì ông đứng cao hơn mọi người. Khi ông mở sách ra thì mọi người đứng dậy.

6Bấy giờ ông Ét-ra chúc tụng ĐỨC CHÚA là Thiên Chúa vĩ đại, và toàn dân giơ tay lên đáp rằng : “A-men ! A-men !” Rồi họ sấp mặt sát đất mà thờ lạy ĐỨC CHÚA.

7Các thầy Lê-vi là Giê-su-a, Ba-ni, Sê-rếp-gia, Gia-min, Ắc-cúp, Sáp-thai, Hô-đi-gia, Ma-a-xê-gia, Cơ-li-ta, A-dác-gia, Giô-da-vát, Kha-nan, Pơ-la-gia, giải thích Lề Luật cho dân, trong khi dân vẫn đứng tại chỗ.

8Ông Ét-ra và các thầy Lê-vi đọc rõ ràng và giải thích Sách Luật của Thiên Chúa, nhờ thế mà toàn dân hiểu được những gì các ông đọc.

9Bấy giờ ông Nơ-khe-mi-a, tổng đốc, ông Ét-ra, tư tế kiêm kinh sư, cùng các thầy Lê-vi là những người đã giảng giải Luật Chúa cho dân chúng, nói với họ rằng : “Hôm nay là ngày thánh hiến cho ĐỨC CHÚA là Thiên Chúa của anh em, anh em đừng sầu thương khóc lóc.” Sở dĩ ông nói thế là vì toàn dân đều khóc khi nghe lời sách Luật.

10Ông Ét-ra còn nói với dân chúng rằng : “Anh em hãy về ăn thịt béo, uống rượu ngon và gửi phần cho những người không sẵn của ăn, vì hôm nay là ngày thánh hiến cho Chúa chúng ta. Anh em đừng buồn bã, vì niềm vui của ĐỨC CHÚA là thành trì bảo vệ anh em.”

11Còn các thầy Lê-vi thì trấn an mọi người như sau : “Anh em đừng khóc nữa, vì hôm nay là ngày thánh ! Anh em chớ phiền muộn làm gì !”

12Bấy giờ toàn dân đi ăn uống, rồi gửi các phần ăn, và liên hoan tưng bừng, vì họ đã hiểu rõ lời lẽ mà người ta vừa cho họ biết.

13Ngày mồng hai, các gia trưởng trong toàn dân, các tư tế và các thầy Lê-vi họp nhau lại bên kinh sư Ét-ra để tra cứu các lời trong Lề Luật.

14Họ gặp thấy trong Lề Luật mà ĐỨC CHÚA đã truyền qua trung gian ông Mô-sê có chép rằng : “Con cháu Ít-ra-en sẽ ở lều suốt kỳ đại lễ tháng thứ bảy.”

15Họ công bố và loan truyền trong khắp các thành của họ và ở Giê-ru-sa-lem rằng : “Anh em hãy lên núi lấy cành ô-liu, ô-liu dại, cành sim, chà là và cây rậm lá, đem về dựng lều như lời đã chép.”

16Vậy dân ra đi, đem cành lá về dựng lều trên sân thượng, dưới sân nhà, tại khuôn viên Đền Thờ Thiên Chúa, tại quảng trường cửa Nước và quảng trường cửa Ép-ra-im.

17Toàn thể cộng đồng những người từ nơi tù đày trở về, đều dựng lều và ở lều. Từ thời ông Giê-su-a, con ông Nun, cho đến hôm đó, con cái Ít-ra-en chưa bao giờ làm như thế. Đó là một niềm vui rất lớn.

18Từ ngày đầu cho đến ngày cuối, hôm nào ông Ét-ra cũng đọc Sách Luật của Thiên Chúa. Cuộc lễ diễn ra suốt bảy ngày, và ngày thứ tám là buổi bế mạc trọng thể, như đã quy định.
