1And he went forth thence, and came to his own country, and his disciples do follow him,

2and sabbath having come, he began in the synagogue to teach, and many hearing were astonished, saying, 'Whence hath this one these things? and what the wisdom that was given to him, that also such mighty works through his hands are done?

3Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, and brother of James, and Joses, and Judas, and Simon? and are not his sisters here with us?' — and they were being stumbled at him.

4And Jesus said to them — 'A prophet is not without honour, except in his own country, and among his kindred, and in his own house;'

5and he was not able there any mighty work to do, except on a few infirm people having put hands he did heal [them];

6and he wondered because of their unbelief. And he was going round the villages, in a circle, teaching,

7and he doth call near the twelve, and he began to send them forth two by two, and he was giving them power over the unclean spirits,

8and he commanded them that they may take nothing for the way, except a staff only — no scrip, no bread, no brass in the girdle,

9but having been shod with sandals, and ye may not put on two coats.

10And he said to them, 'Whenever ye may enter into a house, there remain till ye may depart thence,

11and as many as may not receive you, nor hear you, going out thence, shake off the dust that is under your feet for a testimony to them; verily I say to you, It shall be more tolerable for Sodom or Gomorrah in a day of judgment than for that city.'

12And having gone forth they were preaching that [men] might reform,

13and many demons they were casting out, and they were anointing with oil many infirm, and they were healing [them].

14And the king Herod heard, (for his name became public,) and he said — 'John the Baptist out of the dead was raised, and because of this the mighty powers are working in him.'

15Others said — 'It is Elijah,' and others said — 'It is a prophet, or as one of the prophets.'

16And Herod having heard, said — 'He whom I did behead — John — this is he; he was raised out of the dead.'

17For Herod himself, having sent forth, did lay hold on John, and bound him in the prison, because of Herodias the wife of Philip his brother, because he married her,

18for John said to Herod — 'It is not lawful to thee to have the wife of thy brother;'

19and Herodias was having a quarrel with him, and was willing to kill him, and was not able,

20for Herod was fearing John, knowing him a man righteous and holy, and was keeping watch over him, and having heard him, was doing many things, and hearing him gladly.

21And a seasonable day having come, when Herod on his birthday was making a supper to his great men, and to the chiefs of thousands, and to the first men of Galilee,

22and the daughter of that Herodias having come in, and having danced, and having pleased Herod and those reclining (at meat) with him, the king said to the damsel, 'Ask of me whatever thou wilt, and I will give to thee,'

23and he sware to her — 'Whatever thou mayest ask me, I will give to thee — unto the half of my kingdom.'

24And she, having gone forth, said to her mother, 'What shall I ask for myself?' and she said, 'The head of John the Baptist;'

25and having come in immediately with haste unto the king, she asked, saying, 'I will that thou mayest give me presently, upon a plate, the head of John the Baptist.'

26And the king — made very sorrowful — because of the oaths and of those reclining (at meat) with him, would not put her away,

27and immediately the king having sent a guardsman, did command his head to be brought,

28and he having gone, beheaded him in the prison, and brought his head upon a plate, and did give it to the damsel, and the damsel did give it to her mother;

29and having heard, his disciples came and took up his corpse, and laid it in the tomb.

30And the apostles are gathered together unto Jesus, and they told him all, and how many things they did, and how many things they taught,

31and he said to them, 'Come ye yourselves apart to a desert place, and rest a little,' for those coming and those going were many, and not even to eat had they opportunity,

32and they went away to a desert place, in the boat, by themselves.

33And the multitudes saw them going away, and many recognised him, and by land from all the cities they ran thither, and went before them, and came together to him,

34and having come forth, Jesus saw a great multitude, and was moved with compassion on them, that they were as sheep not having a shepherd, and he began to teach many things.

35And now the hour being advanced, his disciples having come near to him, say, — 'The place is desolate, and the hour is now advanced,

36let them away, that, having gone away to the surrounding fields and villages, they may buy to themselves loaves, for what they may eat they have not.'

37And he answering said to them, 'Give ye them to eat,' and they say to him, 'Having gone away, may we buy two hundred denaries' worth of loaves, and give to them to eat?'

38And he saith to them, 'How many loaves have ye? go and see;' and having known, they say, 'Five, and two fishes.'

39And he commanded them to make all recline in companies upon the green grass,

40and they sat down in squares, by hundreds, and by fifties.

41And having taken the five loaves and the two fishes, having looked up to the heaven, he blessed, and brake the loaves, and was giving to his disciples, that they may set before them, and the two fishes divided he to all,

42and they did all eat, and were filled,

43and they took up of broken pieces twelve hand-baskets full, and of the fishes,

44and those eating of the loaves were about five thousand men.

45And immediately he constrained his disciples to go into the boat, and to go before to the other side, unto Bethsaida, till he may let the multitude away,

46and having taken leave of them, he went away to the mountain to pray.

47And evening having come, the boat was in the midst of the sea, and he alone upon the land;

48and he saw them harassed in the rowing, for the wind was against them, and about the fourth watch of the night he doth come to them walking on the sea, and wished to pass by them.

49And they having seen him walking on the sea, thought [it] to be an apparition, and cried out,

50for they all saw him, and were troubled, and immediately he spake with them, and saith to them, 'Take courage, I am [he], be not afraid.'

51And he went up unto them to the boat, and the wind lulled, and greatly out of measure were they amazed in themselves, and were wondering,

52for they understood not concerning the loaves, for their heart hath been hard.

53And having passed over, they came upon the land of Gennesaret, and drew to the shore,

54and they having come forth out of the boat, immediately having recognised him,

55having run about through all that region round about, they began upon the couches to carry about those ill, where they were hearing that he is,

56and wherever he was going, to villages, or cities, or fields, in the market-places they were laying the infirm, and were calling upon him, that they may touch if it were but the fringe of his garment, and as many as were touching him were saved.

1Đức Giê-su ra khỏi đó và đến nơi quê quán của Người, có các môn đệ đi theo.

2Đến ngày sa-bát, Người bắt đầu giảng dạy trong hội đường. Nhiều người nghe rất đỗi ngạc nhiên. Họ nói : “Bởi đâu ông ta được như thế ? Ông ta được khôn ngoan như vậy, nghĩa là làm sao ? Ông ta làm được những phép lạ như thế, nghĩa là gì ?

3Ông ta không phải là bác thợ, con bà Ma-ri-a, và anh em của các ông Gia-cô-bê, Giô-xết, Giu-đa và Si-môn sao ? Chị em của ông không phải là bà con lối xóm với chúng ta sao ?” Và họ vấp ngã vì Người.

4Đức Giê-su bảo họ : “Ngôn sứ có bị rẻ rúng, thì cũng chỉ là ở chính quê hương mình, hay giữa đám bà con thân thuộc, và trong gia đình mình mà thôi.”

5Người đã không thể làm được phép lạ nào tại đó ; Người chỉ đặt tay trên một vài bệnh nhân và chữa lành họ.

6Rồi Người đi các làng chung quanh mà giảng dạy.

7Người gọi Nhóm Mười Hai lại và bắt đầu sai đi từng hai người một. Người ban cho các ông quyền trừ quỷ.

8Người chỉ thị cho các ông không được mang gì đi đường, chỉ trừ cây gậy ; không được mang lương thực, bao bị, tiền đồng để giắt lưng ;

9được đi dép, nhưng không được mặc hai áo.

10Người bảo các ông : “Bất cứ ở đâu, khi anh em đã vào nhà nào, thì cứ ở lại đó cho đến lúc ra đi.

11Còn nơi nào người ta không đón tiếp và nghe lời anh em, thì khi ra khỏi đó, hãy giũ bụi chân để tỏ ý phản đối họ.”

12Các ông đi rao giảng, kêu gọi người ta ăn năn hối cải.

13Các ông trừ được nhiều quỷ, xức dầu cho nhiều người đau ốm và chữa họ khỏi bệnh.

14Vua Hê-rô-đê nghe biết về Đức Giê-su, vì Người đã nổi danh. Có kẻ nói : “Đó là ông Gio-an Tẩy Giả từ cõi chết trỗi dậy, nên mới có quyền năng làm phép lạ.”

15Kẻ khác nói : “Đó là ông Ê-li-a.” Kẻ khác nữa lại nói : “Đó là một ngôn sứ như một trong các ngôn sứ.”

16Vua Hê-rô-đê nghe thế, liền nói : “Ông Gio-an, ta đã cho chém đầu, chính ông đã trỗi dậy !”

17Số là vua Hê-rô-đê đã sai người đi bắt ông Gio-an và xiềng ông trong ngục. Lý do là vì vua đã lấy bà Hê-rô-đi-a, vợ của người anh là Phi-líp-phê,

18mà ông Gio-an lại bảo : “Ngài không được phép lấy vợ của anh ngài !”

19Bà Hê-rô-đi-a căm thù ông Gio-an và muốn giết ông, nhưng không được.

20Thật vậy, vua Hê-rô-đê biết ông Gio-an là người công chính thánh thiện, nên sợ ông, và còn che chở ông. Nghe ông nói, nhà vua rất phân vân, nhưng lại cứ thích nghe.

21Một ngày thuận lợi đến : nhân dịp mừng sinh nhật của mình, vua Hê-rô-đê mở tiệc thết đãi bá quan văn võ và các thân hào miền Ga-li-lê.

22Con gái bà Hê-rô-đi-a vào biểu diễn một điệu vũ, làm cho nhà vua và khách dự tiệc vui thích. Nhà vua nói với cô gái : “Con muốn gì thì cứ xin, ta sẽ ban cho con.”

23Vua lại còn thề : “Con xin gì, ta cũng cho, dù một nửa nước của ta cũng được.”

24Cô gái đi ra hỏi mẹ : “Con nên xin gì đây ?” Mẹ cô nói : “Đầu Gio-an Tẩy Giả.”

25Lập tức, cô vội trở vào đến bên nhà vua và xin rằng : “Con muốn ngài ban ngay cho con cái đầu ông Gio-an Tẩy Giả, đặt trên mâm.”

26Nhà vua buồn lắm, nhưng vì đã trót thề, lại thề trước khách dự tiệc, nên không muốn thất hứa với cô.

27Lập tức, vua sai thị vệ đi và truyền mang đầu ông Gio-an tới. Thị vệ ra đi, chặt đầu ông ở trong ngục,

28bưng đầu ông trên một cái mâm trao cho cô gái, và cô gái trao cho mẹ.

29Nghe tin ấy, môn đệ đến lấy thi hài ông và đặt trong một ngôi mộ.

30Các Tông Đồ tụ họp chung quanh Đức Giê-su, và kể lại cho Người biết mọi việc các ông đã làm, và mọi điều các ông đã dạy.

31Người bảo các ông : “Chính anh em hãy lánh riêng ra đến một nơi thanh vắng mà nghỉ ngơi đôi chút.” Quả thế, kẻ lui người tới quá đông, nên các ông cũng chẳng có thì giờ ăn uống nữa.

32Vậy, thầy trò xuống thuyền đi lánh riêng ra một nơi hoang vắng.

33Thấy các ngài ra đi, nhiều người hiểu ý, nên từ khắp các thành, họ cùng nhau theo đường bộ chạy đến nơi, trước cả các ngài.

34Ra khỏi thuyền, Đức Giê-su thấy một đám người rất đông thì chạnh lòng thương, vì họ như bầy chiên không người chăn dắt. Và Người bắt đầu dạy dỗ họ nhiều điều.

35Vì bấy giờ đã khá muộn, các môn đệ đến gần Người và thưa : “Ở đây hoang vắng và bây giờ đã khá muộn.

36Xin Thầy cho dân chúng về, để họ vào thôn xóm và làng mạc chung quanh mà mua gì ăn.”

37Người đáp : “Thì chính anh em hãy cho họ ăn đi !” Các ông nói với Người : “Chúng con phải đi mua tới hai trăm quan tiền bánh mà cho họ ăn sao ?”

38Người bảo các ông : “Anh em có mấy chiếc bánh ? Đi coi xem !” Khi biết rồi, các ông thưa : “Có năm chiếc bánh và hai con cá.”

39Người ra lệnh cho các ông bảo mọi người ngồi thành từng nhóm trên cỏ xanh.

40Họ ngồi xuống thành từng đám, chỗ thì một trăm, chỗ thì năm mươi.

41Người cầm lấy năm chiếc bánh và hai con cá, ngước mắt lên trời, dâng lời chúc tụng, rồi bẻ bánh ra, trao cho môn đệ để các ông dọn ra cho dân chúng. Người cũng chia hai con cá cho mọi người.

42Ai nấy đều ăn và được no nê.

43Người ta thu lại những mẩu bánh được mười hai thúng đầy, cùng với cá còn dư.

44Số người ăn bánh là năm ngàn người đàn ông.

45Lập tức, Đức Giê-su bắt các môn đệ xuống thuyền qua bờ bên kia về phía thành Bết-xai-đa trước, trong lúc Người giải tán đám đông.

46Sau khi từ biệt các ông, Người lên núi cầu nguyện.

47Chiều đến, chiếc thuyền đang ở giữa Biển Hồ, chỉ còn một mình Người ở trên đất.

48Người thấy các ông phải vất vả chèo chống vì gió ngược, nên vào khoảng canh tư đêm ấy, Người đi trên mặt biển mà đến với các ông và Người định vượt các ông.

49Nhưng khi các ông thấy Người đi trên mặt biển, lại tưởng là ma, thì la lên.

50Quả thế, tất cả các ông đều nhìn thấy Người và đều hoảng hốt. Lập tức, Người bảo các ông : “Cứ yên tâm, chính Thầy đây, đừng sợ !”

51Người lên thuyền với các ông, và gió lặng. Các ông cảm thấy bàng hoàng sửng sốt,

52vì các ông đã không hiểu ý nghĩa phép lạ bánh hoá nhiều : lòng trí các ông còn ngu muội !

53Khi qua biển rồi, Đức Giê-su và các môn đệ ghé vào đất liền tại Ghen-nê-xa-rét và lên bờ.

54Thầy trò vừa ra khỏi thuyền, thì lập tức người ta nhận ra Đức Giê-su.

55Họ rảo khắp vùng ấy và nghe tin Người ở đâu, thì bắt đầu cáng bệnh nhân đến đó.

56Người đi tới đâu, vào làng mạc, thành thị hay thôn xóm nào, người ta cũng đặt kẻ ốm đau ở ngoài đường ngoài chợ, và xin Người cho họ ít là được chạm đến tua áo choàng của Người ; và bất cứ ai chạm đến, thì đều được khỏi.
